Seniors and Cruising: Motivations and Satisfactions

Swain, Reg January 2008 (has links)
Millions of vacationers are taking a cruise each year and nearly one-third are senior tourists. There is little attention to this sector in the literature. This qualitative study reveals some of the motivations and satisfactions of ten retired seniors who were recently on a cruise. The interviews were transcribed to capture precise wordings of their motivations and satisfactions and then analyzed by phrases. These were open, then axially coded according to a conceptual theory, into three stages: a pre-cruise stage of planning and expectations, the experiences on board a cruise ship through activities and excursions, and the post-cruise stage of satisfaction. The phrases were selective coded into three themes. The findings reveal that the most important feature of a cruise is interaction within them, with their companions, and with others they may meet. Friends, relatives, and the ship's crew add to this interaction. Second, there is a balance of opportunities and constraints incurred while achieving the goal of a cruise. Third, it was found that there are multiple sources of satisfaction from a cruise. This study provides insight into what cruising means to seniors, the effect of interaction with others, and their internal interactions. The experience of a cruise becomes an event that leaves a memorable impression for years to come.

Drömmen om äventyret : Långfärdsseglares reseberättelser på internet / Dreams of Adventure : Cruising Sailors' Online Travel Writing

Jansson, Hanna January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the online travel writing of Swedish cruising sailors. The aim is to analyze how crews in online travelogues describe ongoing experiences, and to show how the journeys, the stories and the storytelling are mutually related to one another. As journeys are both the plots of the stories and the contexts for the storytelling, the travelogues in question challenge established narrative definitions. The analysis combines Amy Shuman’s folkloristic research on immediate storytelling with historian Reinhart Kosellecks’ perspectives on time as situated and subjective. Storytelling is thereby understood as a contextual and variable practice: conditioned, enabled and limited by the writers’ current position and point of view, and by a series of practical, technological, narrative and social factors. The study is based on ethnographic fieldwork online and offline. The material primarily consists of four crews’ blogs and web pages, written texts, photographs, and readers’ comments. Interviews were conducted with the main informants and an additional fifteen crews in Sweden and in the harbours of Horta and Las Palmas. As the analysis show, the sailors’ write and publish updates from ever-changing positions in time and space, thereby depicting their journeys as a practical and cognitive process. These stories are to a great extent motivated by and directed towards the future, as sailors long for warmer destinations and worry about upcoming passages. The sailors write for a real-time audience partly consisting of families and friends, who anxiously wait for new updates. Writing is therefore sometimes perceived as a work-like task, and the sailors must develop strategies in order to write entertaining and exciting stories without further troubling their readers. The study’s result indicate that online storytelling can be understood as a process, which cannot be separated from the described events, nor from its everyday contexts. Stories, storytelling and experiences are understood as integrated with each other, since the storytelling as a practice become an established part of the everyday life during journeys.

Circuits of desire: exploring queer spaces, public sex, and technologies of affiliation

McGuire, Riley 09 September 2014 (has links)
This project looks at the mutually imbricated relationship between space, sex, and technology in cultural output from the last fifteen years. Through an examination of sexual cruising cultures in Samuel R. Delany’s essays Times Square Red, Times Square Blue and John Cameron Mitchell’s film Shortbus, I unpack the ways in which technology is represented as a facilitator and barrier to the formation of spaces that foster queer sexual interactions. This thesis is interested in the ability of different technologies and spaces to promote the formation of heterogeneous relationships that cross categories of social difference—including race, class, and sexuality—following the HIV/AIDS crisis. Alongside an investigation of the potential of technologies of affiliation to support these kinds of interpersonal contacts, I argue that representations of technologically mediated intimacy are often limited to a hesitant ambivalence due to a cultural unease about the new types of non-normative relation offered by technology.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Anselmo Clemente.pdf: 4291962 bytes, checksum: 9fc2ebb73b2a8a4ca36d79e62052a190 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-10-01 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This thesis is a reflection on the relationship between homoeroticism and cities having the so-called “pegação” (cruising gay) in public spaces as a starting point. Because of its clandestinity, anonymity, amplitude and fragmentation, it’s a subject of difficult study. Methodology - A research was carried out through documental and bibliographic survey, taking into account press material, legislations, novels, photographs and national scientific production. Due to the relative scarcity of studies on the subject in Brazil, we also selected scientific texts, books, movies and testimonies of international experiences similar to the homoerotic concept employed in this study. Another methodological branch of this study involved field research in the city of São Paulo, between October 2016 and January 2018, with open interviews with four participants. The experiences and the places where these practices take place, which adherents consider to be a matter of secret, have not been revealed. The field investigation also took place in areas in which the “pegação” occurs pointed out by the interviewees themselves and characterized by their free access and gratuitousness, except those places that are already extinct or those that are so famous that are indicated by the practitioners themselves in sites of public exchanges of points of casual sex. Objectives - To find out how such practices, besides producing male performances, are targets of discursive regimes that organize public life in the city. To investigate its association with infamy as the product of a history that tended to criminalize or pathologize sexual acts considered deviant, indecent, unproductive or abnormal. And finally, in contrast, to conceptualize the "pegação" as a producer of homoculture and subjectivity. Justification - The importance of the theme is twofold since, on the one hand, the study of the “pegação” provides insight on its meanings and may give us better understanding at some of the profiles of affective and sexual relations in contemporaneity; on the other hand, questioning the forms of “pegação” inserts the researcher into the center of practices that are yet to be studied further, but that make up the whole construction of masculine subjectivity - homo and heterosexual - of our day. Hypothesis – “Pegação” is a polysemic term that, when associated to male sexual practices in the city, refers to the production of masculinities, virility codes, institution of places, sexual practices, homoerotic performances, figures and characters. Results - The research evidenced that the “pegação” has secular history and its own geography. From sodomy crimes, through the constitution of the homosexual and the indirect criminalization of homoerotic public practices, the “pegação” was registered by religious figures, jurists, city administrators, doctors and social scientists, among others. Like Brazil, where it is called "pegação", this practice is found worldwide, under other denominations such as cruising, cottage, drague, yiro etc, identified in an international investigation that allowed us to broaden our capacity for analysis about this mundane and, in a way, clandestine event. The practices of “pegação” and their practicioners witness a city, vary in degree their heteronormative status quo, express a population of particular affections and, for that very reason, produce subjectivities / Esta tese é uma reflexão sobre as relações entre homoerotismo e as cidades partir da chamada pegação entre homens em espaços públicos.

Psykopaten i garderoben : En queer läsning av Bret Easton Ellis American Psycho

von Seth, Oscar January 2013 (has links)
The novel American Psycho was first published in 1991. It recieved harsh criticism and was viewed as a work of heterosexism, misogyny and pointless violence. Despite the criticism, the protagonist, a wealthy serial killer yuppie namned Patrick Bateman, fascinated the readers. He hides his monstrosity behind a façade of heteronormativity, but this essay shows that the norms in American Psycho are fragile. Batemans relationships are shallow, his identity is constructed out of traditional masculinitynorms and even though he’s homophobic there’s a homoerotic undertone in the text, as well as gothic patterns that give the novel a fair amount of queerness too. This analysis shows that the fear of AIDS, imprinted in the text, works as a representation for Bateman’s discrepancy concerning his sexuality. It brings to light that Bateman’s feelings towards two of his collegues are charachterized by homoerotic yearnings, and that shallow readings, where the text is not interpreted, allows the brutal violence to divert attention from the novel’s queer meaning. / Romanen American Psycho publicerades 1991.

Charette, Martin 04 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on causes of conflict in a situation least expected: cruise ships. This analysis illustrates the structure of cruising propaganda and how it is linked to oceanic mythologies. Then, the study reveals the connection between humans and the sea, based on the wide mythology and one's empirical experience on a cruise ship (as well as on a liner, cargo or military ship). In a touristic context, this study focuses on the subject of encounter with The Other which, from point of view of the tourist, refers to the locals of the visited destinations, other tourists and mainly the customer service representatives of the cruise lines. The final analysis demonstrates relevant conflicts on board a cruise ship experienced by several informants. The ultimate objective of this study is to understand the causing structures of conflict such as the space, subordination, social roles, social classes, etc.
