Identifying multicultural managerial competencies informing the content of a Master's program in International Management

Fortier, Denise January 2009 (has links)
The fabric of the workforce is changing. Indeed, domestic managers are working with an increasingly multicultural workforce at home while managers who travel abroad often work with people from multiple cultures. Concurrently, managers are often required to work with people in organizations that span across geographic boundaries, located in various time zones, relying mainly on information technology. However, empirical guidelines to train managers facing these challenges are scant as management typologies fall short when it comes to identifying the skills needed for simultaneously working with people from multiple cultural backgrounds. The goal of this study was to identify a repertoire of multicultural managerial competencies for work at home and abroad, in face-to-face contexts and via the use of technology. Using competency modeling as a conceptual framework, we enlisted the help of 20 mid- to upper-level managers who were invited to participate in individual behavioral event interviews to discuss positive and negative critical incidents and to answer questions grounded in job analysis. Data was analyzed using thematic (content) analysis based on a mixed method, a process that mostly illustrated the emergence of new competencies. ATLAS.ti was then used to code transcripts and to cross-reference behaviors according to emerging competency categories. Managers were then invited to validate the relevance of the initial version of the typology and to confirm that no competencies or related behaviors were missing. The resulting Multicultural Managerial Competency (MMC) typology, outlining five competence categories that combine 12 competencies along with their 71 corresponding behavioral indicators, makes both theoretical and practical contributions while offering flexibility for application. Indeed, the MMC typology illustrates an overlap between management and intercultural/cross-cultural literature, confirming that managers in multicultural contexts are called upon to invest in the management of trusting relationships, in distance management, as well as in expatriate management. Multicultural elements also permeate classic business and team functions thereby giving management requirements a new form. In terms of practical applications, the MMC typology provides concrete behavioral indicators for managers to use as guidelines for competence and serves to inform the creation of university curricula in international management.

A multiple case study of the organisational acculturation of host country national managers in foreign subsidiaries : the case of Egypt

Abdelhady, Mona January 2014 (has links)
The present study investigates the phenomenon of organisational acculturation of Egyptian Host Country National middle managers working in three foreign subsidiaries of US, UK, and Swedish MNCs. Host Country National staff (HCNs) are those who work in foreign subsidiaries established in their own countries. HCNs are exposed to the organisational culture of the MNC which is affected by the national culture of the parent company. Accordingly, the concept of cultural adaptation, or organisational acculturation, has been stressed as an essential process for MNCs to deal with problems arising from cultural differences and achieve cross-cultural effectiveness. The topic of the present study is an understudied topic and only few studies addressed the acculturation of HCNs, most of which within the context of Asian-only cultures. The study used a multiple case design and the data were collected using a mixed methods design in which both quantitative and qualitative methods were used. The study was conducted in two phases; the first phase was to compare the work values of the Egyptian middle managers and their UK, US, and Swedish expatriates using a questionnaire on work values, in order to find similarities or differences in work values between the Egyptian managers and their expatriates. To measure the work values of the host national culture, the study used a comparison group of Egyptian middle managers in three local Egyptian firms. In the second phase, in-depth interviews and observation were conducted with a number of Egyptian middle managers who were found to have work values significantly similar to or different from their expatriates work values in the three subsidiaries. This phase was conducted in order to further examine the acculturation phenomenon, and to understand the influence of the Egyptian national culture and the type of control mechanisms used by MNCs on the acculturation process. The results showed that some acculturation effects might have occurred in some work values of Egyptian managers, while other work values might have not been influenced due to the strong effect of the Egyptian national culture. Also, the study found that Egyptians needed both formal bureaucratic and informal cultural mechanisms of control, though with more stress on the formal bureaucratic ones.

No matter where you are recognition is always useful : A qualitative study about cross cultural management between Indian and Swedish female managers and their experiences in a new culture

Cederfelt, Elin, Basmaci, Talita January 2017 (has links)
Managers have an important role to companies’ globalization process and success. Leading organizations across national borders is a huge challenge due to different cultures requires different leadership styles. Culture is the most underrated external factor affecting the leadership. A great cultural distance between two countries, such as India and Sweden, can result in greater differences in organizational attributes. The purpose of this paper is to understand from female managers’ perspective how Indian and Swedish cultural aspects affect their leadership style towards their subordinates. To fulfill the purpose the authors have chosen to use and deductive approach in order to do a qualitative study. The authors interviewed eight Swedish female managers in India and two Indian female managers in Sweden. The theoretical framework is structured upon main themes including; leadership, cross-cultural management, culture, cross-cultural between India and Sweden and previous research. The theory chapter is followed with the empirical data and an analysis chapter where the authors analyzed the results based on the theories and previous research. In conclusion, there are common differences and challenges between Indian and Swedish managers. The managers received respect because of their title. Furthermore, the authors can conclude that Indians are more flexible with the time, while Swedes are the opposite, everything has to be planned. All the managers highlighted the importance of giving feedback to subordinates to improve the performance. Finally, preparation and collecting information about the host country's culture can never be too much.

Desempenho de híbridos de tomate de mesa em função de sistemas de condução e da densidade populacional / Performance of tomato hybrids for fresh market in relation to training systems and planting densities

Matos, Evandro da Silva 17 September 2010 (has links)
Two experiments were conducted under field conditions with the objectives of (a) determining the effect of training and staking systems of plants on yield potential and yield components of fresh market tomato hybrids of indeterminate growth habit of varietal segments Salad Extended Shelf Life (SLV) and Santa Cruz (SC) (Experiment 1), and (b) evaluating the effect of spacing between plants in the single-stem training system with polypropylene wire on yield and yield components for hybrids of segment SLV (Experiment 2). In experiment 1 it was adopted the randomized block design with the treatments in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, and four replications, being evaluated three SLV hybrids and two SC hybrids in two systems of plant training. In experiment 2, the experimental design used was also randomized blocks with the treatments in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, and four replications, being evaluated two SLV hybrids. The experiments were conducted in Itatiba, SP, from July 2007 to January 2008, and from January to July 2009. All plants of each plot were considered and the total number of fruits (NTF), the total production per plot (PTP), the mass of discarded fruits (MFD), the number of commercial fruits (NFC), the commercial production (PCO), the production per plant (PPP), the average mass of fruits (MMF) and the marketable fruit mass of classes AAA, AA and A, for both segments were evaluated, as well as the number of fruits with radial cracking (RAD), concentric cracking (CON), open locules with exposed seed (LAB), blotchy appearance (MAN), puffiness (OCO), and deformed (DEF). It was found that, the training system with one plant per hole, conducted with two stems staked with bamboo, provided increment of NTF, NFC and PPP, for both segments in comparison to the system of a single plant per hole with one stem trained with a propylene wire. The staking system with bamboo, for both segments, provided a smaller MMF and the mass of fruits of classes AAA and A was also lower in relation to the system with a propylene wire. The hybrid Forty showed lower MFD due to lower MAN in the staking system with bamboo. It was not found any difference between the two handling systems for PTP, PCO, LAB and for the mass of the fruits of class AA, for the two market segments. In experiment 2, there was no difference between the hybrids studied in different planting densities for production and for the majority of its components, except for PPP, in which Forty was shown to be superior than Valenty, and for MFD, in which Valenty exceeded Forty due to the greater frequency of LAB. The smaller spacing between plants provided larger NTF, PTP, NFC, PCO, and a mass of the fruits of classes AA and A for both hybrids, as well as a smaller MFD, PPP, MMF, a mass of fruits class AAA, and also a lower number of fruits with RAD and MAN for both hybrids. It was also found that, for both hybrids, under wider spacing between plants the occurrence of fruits with LAB significantly decreased.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcelo Luiz Cunha Pierre.pdf: 2444492 bytes, checksum: 2c078821374873409e27341f80fdc13f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-17 / Soybean is a crop of great importance worldwide and Brazil is the second largest producer of it. Several factors affect the crop yield and the diseases is one of the most important, accounting annual losses estimated between 15 and 20%. The White mold, caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, is one of the oldest diseases and currently, is considered one of the main soybean disease, which has been caused high losses in recent seasons and is difficult to control. Therefore many integrated management practices are recommended for the disease management. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of sowing time of soybean, with three soybean cultivars during two growing seasons. The experiments were conducted in Arapoti-PR, in a naturally infested area (55 sclerotia / m2) during the seasons 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. The design block randomized in a factorial arragement was used in the tests, consisting of three cultivars (NS 4823 RR, BMX Apollo RR and BMX Turbo RR in 2011/12 and NS 4823 RR, BMX Apollo RR and BMX Ativa RR in 2012/13) and seven sowing dates to each season, which began in September continuing for fortnightly intervals until the month of December. The disease incidence and severity and the crop yield (kg ha-1) were evaluated. For the analyzes of the results, the statistical program Assistat 7.7 ® and the Tukey test at 5% probability were used. In both seasons was no interaction between sowing dates and cultivars on the incidence of the disease. In the 2011/12 growing season, no disease was observed at the 1st, 2nd and 7th sowing times, being the 3rd sowind time the most favorable to the disease development, followed by the 4th sowing time. Regarding cultivars, there was no difference between cultivar BMX Apollo RR and BMX Turbo RR, but on the cultivar NS 4823 RR lower incidence level of disease was observed than the others. In the season 2012/13 the 4th sowing time was most favorable to the development of the disease, followed by the 3rd sowing. The 1st, 5th, 6th and 7th sowing times did not differ to each other, and among them only he fifth sowing time presented disease incidence. Among the cultivars, the BMX Ativa RR had the highest incidence level of the 2012/13 season, differing from the others. In the 2012/13 season, again, the cultivar NS 4823 RR achieved the lowest incidence and did not differ from BMX Apollo RR. The severity evolution of white mold was similar between the three cultivars, in both seasons. The rain during the flowering was essential for the development of the disease and the temperature, especially when above 30 ° C, was limiting for the occurrence of the disease in the two seasons. The cultivar NS 4823 RR had the lowest incidences in the two seasons, even under favorable weathers conditions, possibly due its maturity group and canopy (less branches), disadvantaging the favorable microclimate conditions for the diseae development.

Souza, Mariana de Barros 17 October 2016 (has links)
Cultural policies nowadays are designed and implemented based on different perspectives. In Brazil, government has assumed several phases and trends, but in general tax incentive takes leading role with regard to the financing of culture since the mid-80. In this context, the present study aimed to identify some people responsible for managing public resources in the cultural area and to identify the perception of such professionals about their ability to perform this function. For data collection, cultural managers were interviewed. The intention was to verify knowledge, practices, beliefs and social representations of cultural management. The method used to analyze qualitative data obtained was the Discourse of the collective subject (DCS). So, elements with similar senses were processed into single speeches, written in the first person singular. It was noted that sometimes, managers are struggling to play their role and, generally without specific training in the area, they talk about empiricism and hiring companies for advice and security. When seeking specialization, they found, mostly, discontinued and short courses - usually paid and offered in main cities.

National and organisational cultural impact on talent management implementation : case studies from Greece

Kravariti, Foteini January 2016 (has links)
Organisations today are investing in the efficient management of their talented workforce, known as talent management (TM) in order to bear fruitful outcomes in terms of corporate sustainability. Some businesses choose to include all employees in their TM strategy-inclusive TM-whilst others only include the highest-performing employees-exclusive TM. It has been suggested that no matter which TM strategy they implement, contextual factors such as culture seem to drive the degree of their application. Thus, the rationale for this research is in determining the cultural factors that trigger the exercise of TM.This study's aim is to analyse the extent to which TM strategies are impacted by national and organisational culture. In addition, it seeks the critical exploration of TM in the context of key human resource practices (HRPs); the critical investigation of TM's application; the critical examination of national and organisational culture; and finally, the degree to which both types of culture affect TM's application. This study follows a conceptual framework which sets national culture as the independent variable, organisational culture as the mediating variable, and TM as the dependent variable. The body of theory overviewed is relevant to TM's concepts and its interrelation to both human resource management (HRM) and human resource development (HRD). Predominant national and organisational cultural frameworks are also overviewed. This research's sample includes six case studies from northern, central and southern Greece and adopts a mixed-methods approach using primary data collected through questionnaires and interviews, and analysed through SPSS and thematic analysis. Among the key findings is that national culture indirectly drives the adoption of specific TM modes through the development of certain corporate cultures. Additional findings shed light on the contemporary conception of 'talent' and 'TM,' as well as on the association between national and corporate culture. This study significantly contributes to knowledge by bringing in evidence from the business environment while also discussing implications for practitioners regarding the parameters that influence both their decisions and actions.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Litervaldo Pereira Machado.pdf: 826962 bytes, checksum: 4c267bd8c50631dcb8bdf8b7b2c1cc47 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-02-29 / Rhizoctonia canker, caused by Rhizoctonia solani, is an important cowpea disease in Northeastern region of Brazil. This thesis aimed: a) to evaluate the potential of crop rotation and green manures in inducing suppressiveness to Rhizoctonia canker in cowpea; b) to identify the biotic factors related to suppression; and c) to analysis the stability of the disease suppression by selected crop rotation in relation to different isolates and inoculum density of the pathogen, and soils from different locations. The experiments were conducted in microplots in the field. In relation to crop rotations, Initially, 14 treatments were compared in four growing seasons, including different combinations of cowpea (CA) in rotation with cotton (AL), sunflower (AL), castor bean (MA), corn (MI) and sorghum (SO), and in combination with fallow (PO) and cowpea monoculture. The rotations CA-MI-SO-CA, CA-GI-SO-CA and CA-MI-PO-CA provided reductions of 77.6%, 74.0% and 73.9% in the disease severity, respectively. When the stability of disease control by CA-MI-SO-CA rotation was evaluated in relation to different pathogen isolates, inoculum densities and soils, in all situations the disease severity was significantly (P0,0001) lower under crop rotation as compared to cowpea monoculture, indicating the potential of the crop rotation for controlling the Rhizoctonia canker. In relation to green manures, 13 treatments were compared in five growing seasons, considering different combinations of cowpea and green manures (sunn hemp, breviflora crotalaria, showy crotalaria, jack bean, velvet bean, dwarf mucuna, lablab bean, dwarf pigeon pea, forage pigeon pea, corn, millet and sorghum). For the two evaluations after green manures cultivation, the incorporation of sorghum into the soil led to smallest levels of severity of cowpea Rhizoctonia canker, reducing by 81.3% and 83.3% the disease severity. There was no significant correlation from levels of disease severity with microbiological variables.

Museu e cidade: o impasse do MACs / Museum and the city: the impasse of the museums of contemporary art in Brazil

Motta, Renata Vieira da 18 August 2009 (has links)
This survey looks at thirteen of Brazil\'s public museums in the northeast, mid-west, south and southeast regions of the country, which are known as \"museums of contemporary art\" (local acronym MACs). As a typology or institutional model, the MACs have reached an impasse, not only in relation to contemporary art as heritage and permanent collections, but also and particularly in terms of their cultural role in Brazilian society. Since culture is an essential element in the actual process of material reproduction of society, and since museums must actively and physically participate in the outside world, aiming for appropriation of the institutions by citizens, the institutional impasse identified by the survey is discussed from the standpoint of the city-museum relationship. Urban transformations and identity discourses are continually being reworked in cities today as important elements qualifying the analysis and discussion of current contemporary art museums.
