Reassessing the Myth of the Irish Channel: An Archaeological Analysis

Bordelon, Blair Alexandra 01 May 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to uncover the history of New Orleans’s Irish Channel and, through the use of archaeological evidence from two household privies, to trace the social processes involved in the formation of ethnicity and social identity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Despite its name and the annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations that take place in its streets, the Irish Channel was never an ethnic enclave of Irish identity. With an equal number of Germans, along with some English and French immigrants, and certain streets comprised fully of African-Americans, the Irish Channel was home to a diverse assortment of people all with unique and fluid conceptions of "identity." This paper attempts to flesh out the changing social, cultural, and institutional boundaries surrounding the formation of ethnic and cultural identities in the Irish Channel at the turn of twentieth century. By combining contemporary anthropological theory on ethnicity and cultural change with an analysis of the archaeological data and the historical and social contexts in which material culture was used, I challenge the usefulness of assimilationist approaches to understanding culture and the archaeological record. Using the archaeology of two Irish Channel families, I demonstrate the need for studying the complex, multidimensional relationship between material culture and identity in order to gain a deeper understanding of the past.

A Constructivist Criticism Of Neo-realist Conception Of

Apar, Altan 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The thesis makes a constructivist criticism of neo-realism&rsquo / s particular conceptualization of state through a comparative analysis of Turkey&rsquo / s five motions (2003-2007) on military involvement in Iraq. Firstly, neo-realism and constructivism with regards to the concept of state are explored. Then, through the lights of the theoretical discussion, Turkey&rsquo / s five military motions are examined. In the case study, parliamentary minutes are used as the primary historical evidences. In the parliamentary discussions, three themes appeared significant-&ldquo / institutional identity&rdquo / , &ldquo / legitimacy&rdquo / and &ldquo / interest&rdquo / - which provided the ground for a constructivist criticism of neo-realist understanding of state. These three themes obtained from the discussions are tapped under four major topics which have been the main issues for the constructivists: &ldquo / agency&rdquo / , &ldquo / norms&rdquo / , &ldquo / identity&rdquo / and &ldquo / interest&rdquo / . Thesis argues that foreign policy behavior is a political product and &ldquo / state&rdquo / is a social actor whose behavior can only be understood from the social, cultural and historical context in which the state-society relations are embedded. Hence, for the purpose of making a structural analysis, separation of the domestic and the international realm of state is a fallacy with which neo-realism is badly plagued. Constructivism, on the other hand, has the potential to bridge this gap and understand the foreign policy behavior of states more accurately since it gives credence to the inner diversity of states through problematizing the ideational elements in foreign policy making and in international politics.

Culture, change and the management of London's taxi drivers

Galvin, Michael January 2016 (has links)
This research has been based on my experiences of London taxi drivers, both before I entered the London Taxi Industry, whilst studying to be a London taxi driver and during the thirty years I spent within the industry in a number of roles. My research has been undertaken in an inductive, broadly ideographic style. The study has been developed through initially narrating my experiences and observations in the industry and then analysing this account reflexively. The material that formed the basis of my narrative account was collected in an ethnographic style. In addition to my narrative account I also referenced the small amount of published material concerning the London taxi industry and interviewed a number of taxi drivers. A significant constraint was the lack of peer reviewed literature concerning taxi drivers and the taxi industry. Once I had developed my narrative account I then interpreted it in order to better understand the experiences and observations, the institutions and the people within the industry to understand and relate how they react and behave within their environment. The analysis involved deconstruction and interpretation against a framework of relevant literature to facilitate my understanding and assist sense making. I also interpreted the interactions with those outside of the taxi drivers' environment and analysed the persona that journalists and others have constructed that is meant to represent the London Taxi Driver. I considered the identity and characteristics implied by journalists with the prevailing culture and the identity that taxi drivers and the industry sought to portray. The qualification to become a taxi driver is known as the Knowledge of London. The Knowledge, as it is known in the industry, is recognised as an onerous task and has developed according to many in the industry into a rite of passage. I found that this process, with its rituals and arcane practices, which are accepted consensually by the industry, had a significant effect on the taxi drivers' identity and their status amongst non-taxi driver peers. Taxi driving is considered in working class circles to be at the upper end of a hierarchy of professional driving roles largely due to the achievement of passing the Knowledge of London together with the earning opportunity, perceived job security and flexibility afforded by being one's own boss. Knowledge of London students and taxi drivers appear to demonstrate common behavioural traits which I have explored in my research. London's taxi drivers appear to fear an assimilation of their role with other lower status driving roles and this fear has a significant effect on any attempts at change within the industry or within its institutions. The institutions within the industry provided much material for me to consider in the context of their alignment or clash with the culture of the industry. Changes in business processes and some of the institutions' relationships with their taxi driver stakeholders and the challenges to the industry's culture are considered as case studies within my reflexive account. The contribution to original knowledge is the insight into the culture and identity of London's Taxi Drivers, the behaviours and relationships within the industry both between drivers and the institutions that regulate, represent and benefit from the industry. Taxi drivers' responses to organisational and business process change. Further contributions to original knowledge are provided from the realisation that much of the structure developed within conventional organisations by management has developed organically without management intervention in the taxi industry. Many of the traits of life in offices and factories are likewise present in the London Taxi Industry despite the disparate and virtual nature of the industry and its reliance on consensual adoption of rules and practice rather than managerial influence and formal processes and procedures.

When those three elements gather, several opportunities and possibilities are offered to people. The site Omelete, research object of this dissertation, is the result of a project prepared by friends, comics and games fans, that didn’t find enough information about their favorite issues and decided to create a blog to share matters about pop culture and satisfy their curiosities and wills. Nowadays, what was born as a blog is considered the largest online vehicle about pop culture in Brazil. The objective of this dissertation was to verify the characteristics of the object and the context in which it is inserted and which factors put it in its present position. For that, we made a literature review to establish the theoretical basis of the dissertation. Then, we classified the published matters on the site about the Comic-Con International: San Diego during a pre-determined time and analyzed some achieved data. At last, we described the event Comic Con Experience, organized by Omelete and by Chiaroscuro, and ascertained the information we collected from the literature revision to the personal experience in the convention. The society we live in has permitted the appearance, developing and maintenance of a variety of tribes and cultures. It is a society where technology provides tools for people to communicate, share information and interact with internet users with similar interests, such as the consumption of the same cultural products. These actions are responsible for the formation of individual and group identity which they belong to. In a participative form, the groups build knowledge and strengthen the collective intelligence.

As representações da Língua Inglesa no discurso de jovens carentes = um estudo crítico / Representatios of english in the discourse of social vulnerable youngsters : a critical study

This dissertation deals with representations of the English language made by at-risk young people who take part of a course of English as a foreign language offered by an international NGO in Sao Paulo. For this critical study, we firstly discuss about the educational programs of NGOs for disadvantaged youth and how these programs are linked to the training of skilled manpower. We then reflect about the identities of the post-modern youngsters and how their language identities are affected by the English language and globalization. As a theoretical basis, we use the Critical Discourse Analysis, as conceived by Fairclough (2001, 2003), and Cultural Studies, which led us to analyze the data collected through an entry questionnaire to the course, an essay on the future of the youngsters and a focus group with the young people who participate in the English classes. Through selection and transcription of data and its subsequent analysis, which focused on the Actional, Representational and Identificational Meaning, we conclude that the discourse of English as an essential language to the job market and as a representative of North American neocolonialism is latent in the discourse of the youngsters, who sometimes confirm and support this hegemonic character of the English language, and other times advocate an appreciation of language and national culture as a form of resistance / Mestrado / Lingua Estrangeira / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

[en] URBAN FRONTEIRS: INTERPRETATIONS ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CRUZADA SÃO SEBASTIÃO AND LEBLON / [pt] FRONTEIRAS URBANAS: INTERPRETAÇÕES SOBRE A RELAÇÃO ENTRE CRUZADA SÃO SEBASTIÃO E LEBLON

ANA CAROLINA CANEGAL DE ALMEIDA 03 January 2011 (has links)
[en] This work approaches the urban segregation theme through the study of the relationship between Cruzada São Sebastião, a housing project built over 50 years in order to shelter families which had lived in favelas, and Leblon, the neighborhood in which it takes place, mostly occupied by medium and higher classes’ groups. The research had focused on the analyses of five interpreters, which have their own specific perspectives, from inside and outside the housing project, trying to comprehend their particular ways of reading the relationship between those spaces in question. The hypothesis was that there are tensions originated from a constant reanimated and revived urban frontier established between Cruzada São Sebastião and Leblon, through the strength of stereotypes and territorial stigma relegated to Cruzada. Our intention, therefore, was to contribute for the urban segregation processes debate.

The present study points out a production perspective for the teaching of local history in the city of Ponta Grossa presenting possibilities for teaching history in basic education. Starting from the premise that local history contributes to the formation of the identity of the learners, strengthening in them the feeling of belonging to the locality where they live, as well as contributing to their perceiving themselves as participatory agents of history, we sought to study the presence of the bands of music as producers of culture and an integral part of the identity of the people of Ponta Grossa. Since the 19th century, music bands have been cultural agents present in the most diverse civic, religious or festive moments of the city. Until now, their presence is almost mandatory in the most diverse festive events of the city, which makes these corporations musical instruments without a doubt instruments of cultural diffusion and elements that contribute to the formation of a local identity, constituting themselves as assets of the Cultural Patrimony of the city.

Understanding Nation from an African Vantage Point. The Oromo polity during the 16th century as a point of reference

Megersa Dirirsa, Sisay January 2013 (has links)
The thesis attempts to address two central problems in the process of understanding the phenomenon of a nation. First, to what extent does the modernist view that embeds the origin of a nation in the European historical context is valid? Second, to what extent does the existing normative knowledge base concerning the phenomena of a nation and an ethnic entity adequately delineate the conceptual and empirical boundaries in between of these two phenomena. The central focus of this thesis is; therefore, to expose a basic internal contradiction that is inherent in the existing conceptual understanding of a nation. Using the Oromo case as a vantage point, it is the conviction of this thesis that the concept of a nation is 'Eurocentric' to the neglect of historical specificities outside Europe such as the case with the Oromo people. The thesis generates its epistemological presumptions from Hans-Georg Gadamer's Philosophical Hermeneutics. Since the thesis will depart from the presumption that considers a nation as a concept, the thesis will attempt to capitalize on some methodological and conceptual insights from Reinhhart Koselleck's History of Concept. The thesis uses two kinds of sources materials: one, European theoretical literature on the concept of nation; two, ethnographic and historical...

No. of bitstreams: 1 EmaMSS_DISSERT.pdf: 1872781 bytes, checksum: 0fc5e282949128f381a4fdbfddb1106b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-10-04 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The proposal of the present study is to get to know and to analyze the building up of the culture notion among the participants of the Paresi Kozarini group in the ethnodevelopment context. The main focus is the ethnographic study, presenting a description of Aldeia Rio Verde (Paresi Indigenous Land), understanding it as a synthesis of historic processes which explains the current moment of Paresi Indigenous group. By using the mentioned methodology, the processes and social relations produced along the contact path of this group with regional-national culture were focused, and how that contact affects the present. The research questions which concern the present study refer to the processes of identification of the researched subjects about themselves and in relation to others. According as almost the totality of the indigenous group we usually know as Paresi, recognize itself as Kozarini, the attention is directed to the manner how they see themselves and how they differ from the other Paresi groups, not indigenous people, and other indigenous groups; and which meanings of the prefix ethno- (which culture elements) they have elected to represent and manage external matters to their culture and society, in the context of discussions about ethnodevelopment / A proposta deste estudo ? conhecer e analisar a constru??o da no??o de cultura entre o grupo Paresi Kozarini no contexto do etnodesenvolvimento.
