Social Political Discourse Of The Surveillance Society A Thesis Submitted To The Graduate School Of Social Sciences Of Middle East Technical University By Egemen Nilufer Yumurtaci In Partial Fulfillment Of The Re

Yumurtaci, Egemen Nilufer 01 November 2003 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to discuss the Surveillance Society discourse, especially in relation with political analysis in a historical framework by means of new technologies. This study also analyzes the use of so-called revolutionary information and telecommunication technologies for data recording and tracking is analyzed, which is used to regulate the order of the system by the power holders. The limits of thought are traced to Foucault and Lyon. To this context an attempt is made to show that surveillance/ monitoring is growing as a result of the developments in information and communication technologies. Dataveillance is being carried out by Internet, ID cards, and bank credit cards. Focus is on awareness as a midway between paranoia and utopic futurism against surveillance suppression.

”…att biblioteket är en plats där inget sparas” : en intervjustudie om dataveillance och personlig integritet på folkbibliotek / ”…that the library is a place where nothing is stored” : an interview study about dataveillance and privacy at public libraries

Carlander Borgström, Anton January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the ways in which relevant personnel view dataveillance and user privacy, in the context of providing internet access via desktop computers at public libraries. Two research questions are put forth: 1. ”In what ways do relevant personnel engage with user privacy, in relation to dataveillance?” and 2. ”What obstacles and opportunities do relevant personnel experience in this line of work?”. Purposeful sampling was employed and semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven individuals either employed by a public library or by the municipality at large in supporting- or executive-roles. The interviews were analyzed using Tavani’s (2007; 2008) and related theories of privacy as well as previous research on the topic. Among the findings were that personnel found themselves prohibited, due to several factors, in the extent to which they were able to customize desktop access to guard against dataveillance’s privacy-intrusions. Furthermore, awareness of the particulars of dataveillance was limited amongst personnel as well as in the most frequent desktop users. Obstacles discerned from the analysis included a lack of personnel training, dataveillance-companies vertical integration, as well as the potential of privacy protection-technologies to mask illegal activities. Opportunities discerned from the analysis included the potential for an expanded approach to raise awareness amongst users about dataveillance as well as a firm dedication across the institution to tackle the issue. Limitations of the study’s results include the narrow scope of its sampling.

Staff’s perception of students’ informational privacy in higher education: The case of Canvas

Tummes, Jan-Philip January 2023 (has links)
This study aims at discussing how students’ informational privacy in the learning management system (LMS) Canvas is perceived by staff at higher education institutions (HEIs), as well as identifying challenges arising from dataveillance and from perceptions of informational privacy themselves. The study of perceptions is based on a range of interviews at five HEIs in Sweden. While the LMS Canvas includes dataveillance of students especially through learning analytics (LA) functions that are novel and opaque at Swedish HEIs, consideration of respective flows of personal information and resulting challenges to students’ informational privacy is relatively scarce. Even though usage of dataveillance capabilities appears limited at HEIs, a discrepancy between processed data and respective perceptions among staff, in addition to rare institutional discussions, make Canvas a problematic case for HEIs. Canvas and its introduction were generally perceived as a success, but dataveillance is likely unknown to many students and thus potentially misaligned with their interests for informational privacy.

To consider the integrity on social media : A qualitative study about how the elder generation experience that dataveillance affects their integrity on Facebook and how they negotiate it

Eliasson, Erika, Löwy, Rebecca January 2021 (has links)
The Study “To consider the integrity on social media” aims to how the elder generation negotiate their integrity and how it is affected by the dataveillance on social media. The study examines the elder generation in the age between 60 to 80 years on how they perceive integrity and dataveillance on Facebook. Over the past decade, internet use among the elderly has increased, while concerns about the online integrity have become an increasingly discussed topic, with incidents such as Cambridge Analytica and Brexit that raised awareness about integrity and dataveillance. The rapid development of digital media has contributed to a strong community, that the elderly wants to take part in, but finds it difficult to be a part of. The elder generation lacks the digital skills that is required, which creates a gap between the elderly and society. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Internet Privacy Concerns (IPC), Integrity Paradox and Westin´s theory. By using the method thematic analysis, we have studied the qualitative interviews and found themes that contribute to the analysis of the empirical research. The analysis showed that the elderly stands between being part of the social, digital community and jeopardize their online integrity or choosing to give up social media and risk ending up in exclusion but maintaining their integrity in safety. The study also found that the elderly lacks the digital knowledge that is required today to be a part of the digital community and have difficulties in understanding what dataveillance means and that it exists on Facebook.
