Induced defenses in apple fruits: linking fruit chemistry, quality, and plant-insect-microbe interactionsMeakem, Victoria 24 June 2020 (has links)
Plants synthesize a diverse array of phytochemicals in response to interactions with herbivores, pathogens, and commensal microbes. These phytochemicals may simultaneously enhance crop defense and quality, representing a potential pest management strategy. However, plant chemical responses to different types and levels of biotic interactions remain unclear, particularly in fruit tissues, and the feasibility of inducing these defenses through elicitor application in field environments also requires further examination. Thus, apples were used to 1) examine the impact of distinct communities of biotic interactions among plants, insects, and microbes on fruit phenolic chemistry, and 2) examine the impact of the phytohormones jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), and melatonin (M) on fruit phenolic chemistry and resistance against pests and pathogens. Ultimately, phenolic defenses were induced by fungal damage primarily in ripe pulp tissues, where there was also a positive relationship between fungal endophyte and phenolic diversity, supporting a broad hypothesis that chemical diversity may increase with biotic diversity. Additionally, two compounds were upregulated in response to fungal damage: chlorogenic acid and an unidentified benzoic acid. Elicitor applications did not affect phenolic chemistry, but the combined application of JA-SA analogues had some chemical or physical effect, as this treatment reduced emergence of the insect Rhagoletis pomonella. Thus, fruit induced defenses may be tissue-specific and subject to temporal, environmental, or genotypic variation. Overall, these chapters examined the relationship between biotic interactions and induced fruit chemistry, with the goal of improving understanding of plant-microbe-insect interactions and incorporating these interactions into more sustainable agricultural practices. / Master of Science / Plants may produce a diverse array of defensive phytochemical compounds in response to interactions with herbivores, pathogens, and the microorganisms that reside within plant tissues. These phytochemicals may simultaneously improve crop defenses and quality, representing a potential agricultural management strategy. However, plant chemical responses to different types and levels of biotic interactions are not well-understood, particularly in fruit tissues, and the feasibility of activating these defenses in fruits through the application of phytohormones that regulate defense pathways as a potential management strategy also requires further examination. Thus, apples were used to 1) examine the impact of distinct communities of biotic interactions among plants, insects, and microbes on fruit chemistry, focusing on phenolics, an important class of phytochemical compounds, and 2) examine the impact of the defense-activating phytohormones jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), and melatonin (M) on fruit phenolic chemistry and resistance against pests and pathogens. Ultimately, phenolic defenses were activated by fungal damage primarily in ripe pulp tissues, where there was also a positive relationship between fungal endophyte and phenolic diversity, supporting a broad hypothesis that chemical diversity may increase with biotic diversity. Phytohormone applications did not affect phenolic chemistry, but the application of the combined JA-SA analogues had some chemical or physical effect, as this treatment reduced emergence of the insect Rhagoletis pomonella. Overall, the phytochemical defenses activated by biotic interactions in fruits may occur primarily in certain tissue types, and may also vary due to environmental conditions, time of year, or plant species. These chapters examined the relationship between fruit chemistry and biotic interactions with the goal of improving understanding of plant-microbe-insect interactions and incorporating these interactions into more sustainable agricultural practices.

The object of investigation is the dynamics and respective interests of the various players involved in the Brazil-South Africa joint development of the air-air missile A-Darter. Based on International Relations theory, this research project deals with the interaction among the main players at the Brazilian defence sector, regarding their specific as well as interdependent contexts, namely, diplomatic, military, business and managerial factors. The period of analysis includes the first high-level contacts, conducted in 2003, and the first successful launch of the A-Darter missile, dated of July 2010. It is argued that there is a need for clear mechanisms and permanent coordination among the key players in the Brazilian defence sector in order to maximize the benefits of such type of cooperation

This thesis analyzes the recent refonns of the Brazilian, Argentinean and Chilean civic intelligence services in the context of the South American civic-military relationship issues. The research is based on three different problems: A) The institutional challenge of building effective, efficient and consistent intelligence
systems in order to fulfill the demands for security and defense of those countries. How have Latin American civic intelligence services been institutionally planned in the transition and consolidation periods? B) The institutional challenge of designing responsive, consistent and responsible intelligence systems to do what is required by the public democratic controI. Why have the modern means of supervising congress tasks had
distinct perfonnances in the control of intelligence activities considering accountability in those countries? C) The professional challenge of structuring flexible, qualified and analytically relevant intelligence systems. How do those countries deal with the professionalization issues related to intelligence systems analysis? What are the most important institutional devices used to evaluate the analytic perfonnance of intelligence services by the national government in each of those countries? The general objectives of the research are to produce knowledge about the role and operations of intelligence systems during processes of democratic consolidation and to increase civil expertise and public awareness about the importance and the dilemmas involved in the perfonnance of intelligence services / Doutorado / Doutor em Ciências Sociais

'A sort of middle of the road policy' : forward defence, alliance politics and the Australian Nuclear Weapons Option, 1953-1973Auton, Luke Thomas, Humanities & Social Sciences, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is about the importance of nuclear weapons to Australian defence and strategic policy in Southeast Asia between 1953 and 1973. It argues that Australia's approach to nuclear issues during this period, and its attitude towards the development and acquisition of nuclear weapons in particular, was aimed exclusively at achieving narrowly defined political objectives. Australia was thus never interested in possessing nuclear weapons, and any moves seemingly taken along these lines were calculated to obtain political concessions - not as part of a 'bid' for their acquirement. This viewpoint sits at odds with the consensus position of several focused studies of Australian nuclear policy published in the past decade. Although in general these studies correctly argue that Australia maintained the 'nuclear weapons option' until the early 1970s, all have misrepresented the motivation for this by contending that the government viewed such weapons in exclusively military terms. The claim that Australia was interested only in the military aspect of nuclear weapons does not pay due attention to the fact that defence planning was based entirely on the provision of conventional forces to Southeast Asia. Accordingly, the military was interested first and foremost with issues arising from extant conventional planning concepts, and the government was chiefly concerned about obtaining allied assurances of support for established plans. The most pressing requirement for Australia therefore was gaining sway over allied countries. However, the Australian government was never in a position to overtly influence more powerful allies against an undertaking that could escalate into limited war, and was similarly incapable of inducing its allies to retain forces in the region in spite of competing pressures. It was for this reason that Australia would seek to manipulate the nuclear weapons option. Indeed, access to such weapons offered Australia the opportunity to achieve greater integration in formulating allied planning, while the threat to manufacture them provided a means of convincing regional partners to maintain a presence in the area. The thesis therefore concludes that Australia carefully presented its options for procuring nuclear weapons to gain influence over its allies in response to strategic developments in Southeast Asia.
