Le travail du négatif chez Denis Diderot. Une étude de fictions choisies / The work of the negative in writing of Denis Diderot. A study of selected fictionsBohn, Marie-Anne 24 March 2018 (has links)
The work of the negative, a concept that initiated in philosophy, allowed the researcher to tackle the core of this study, as this action appears to shake profoundly the corpus of fictional texts chosen. If the work of the negative is a movement, which is shaped within a context of polarisation where the other is always implied, if there is an ambiguous turmoil and inconstancy, how does it actualize in Diderot’s work? To this extent, the study of the context of writing is essential as censorship and networks impact the arts. Additionally, the density of the texts requires unpacking the rhetorical effect of the convoluted prose. From genres to the connection to reality, from fictionalization of thoughts to narrative mode, tracks are covered repeatedly, thicken the plot, and eventually grant the central places to speech. In light of this information, the reader’s task is intricate. Is this “negative” stir connected to Diderot’s unfolding his thoughts through multiplicity? Lastly, we will probe further the feeling of movement which emanates from the texts at hand. It is as if it converged towards preserving the strength and power of thinking, as if in the meantime at a cross section between philosophy and literature, the style of Diderot was shaping up. A dialogic form structures the writing. Irony and its features mold sentences and situations in order to place the reader in an active discomfort, it reverberates the questioning inherent to the writing, and overflows. The work of the negative, which can be found more or less profusely in Diderot’s work, puts the notion of literarity into perspective.

In the second quarter of the twelfth century, Suger of Saint-Denis, a Cluniac monk, wrote three texts in which he mentioned and described the renovation he carried out in the abbey church of Saint-Denis in his prelacy. That renovation was later identified by History of Art as the origin of Gothic architecture. Such texts, known as Ordinatio, De Consecratione, and De Administratione, published and translated in several editions, have thus been analyzed by some art historians, namely Erwin Panofsky, Peter Kidson, Jean-Claude Bonne, and Conrad Rudolph, based on theoretical frameworks related to the arts, architecture, aesthetics, and psychology. Nevertheless, although many scholars, such as Rita Copeland and Suzanne Reynolds, have been asserting the importance of rhetoric in the twelfth century, the rhetorical character of these texts has not yet been thoroughly examined by scholars. Investigation into the genres in which the texts were written, into the parts of discourse, and into the rhetorical techniques applied to the texts may reveal that some passages that have traditionally been taken at face value or as Suger\'s empirical experience and opinion may be thought of as non-literal-minded and discursive stances. Therefore, the purpose of this research project is to contribute to the scholarship on Suger\'s writings by recognizing and scrutinizing their rhetorical features

The abbey church of Saint-Denis, situated at the vicinity of Paris, is one of the most proeminent of the European Middle Ages. Medieval sources have a great number of references to its importance, naming it as the ¿mother of the French churches¿. For many centuries, the abbey church was the core of the prestigious royal abbey, and its status has made it free of any feudal or ecclesiastical domination and only subject to the king himself. To art historians, the most significative moment in the history of the church is the great reform promoted by abbot Suger (1122-1151) during the years 1137-1144. Suger has achieved a complete reformulation in the western sector (the narthex) and the chevet (the choir and the crypt), transforming the old carolingian building (erected at the 8th century). The narthex was enlarged and added of three new portals and statue-columns (disappeared) that flanked the central portal. In the choir, the changes were still more significant: the little carolingian apse was removed and, at its place, a new and great structure was constructed, equipped with seven radiant chappels. But one of the most significant innovations present in Suger¿s new building were the stained glass windows, the great vitraux that let the daylight spread over the choir. One can say that the structural changes and the new conception of the ecclesiatical space gave the church of Suger a new form, quiet different from other romanic sanctuaries of its time. This new building erected under Suger¿s administration is considered by the scholars as the beginning of Gothic architecture, which should spread thereafter all over Europe. This Ms. Dissertation offers a translation (to portuguese) of Suger¿s little book De Consecratione Ecclesiae Sancti Dionysii, with explicative notes and two analytical texts: the former is about the place of Suger at the medieval art historiography and the latter is about the relations between the theology and the ¿aesthetics¿ in the old Saint-Denis abbot¿s temple / Mestrado / Historia da Arte / Mestre em História

A Fire Stronger than God: Myth-making and the Novella Form in Denis Johnson's Train DreamsNgo, Chinh 15 May 2015 (has links)
Using concepts of cognitive evolutionary theory, the author explores how narrative storytelling manifests itself in Denis Johnson's novella Train Dreams. The novella form is also discussed, focusing on its manipulation of linear time, its naturalization of supernatural elements, and its deconstruction of dichotomous relationships. Utilizing the novella's distinct structural and thematic elements, Johnson's text shows the myth of American expansionism and industrial progress and that of Kootenai holism in collision, resulting in a narrative renegotiation that seeks to affirm coexistence and complexity.

Previous issue date: 2016-09-22 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The purpose of this dissertation is to present the importance of the theatre according to Denis Diderot point of view. Thus, based on his thoughts, try to understand the purposes of which, the philosopher will demonstrate from the representative act, in France during the 18th century. Diderot suggests an improvement in the way of making theatre, as well as in its own theatrical representations. The philosopher will determine a theory for the actors to improve their performances. The performances should be based on nature observation, aiming to be studied and represented with pure rationality. In this regard, he gives emphasis to artificiality in disadvantage of nature to create perfection in a scene. In Diderot’s point of view, the theatre should be and do the job of remove society’s addictions and make people work on their virtue. In addition, theater plays should approach people’s busy lives and through that he suggests and introduces a new genre called drama and it is a genre that can be classified as intermediate, being in between tragedy and comedy / A presente dissertação tem como intuito analisar a importância do teatro no pensamento de Denis Diderot.

The aim of this work is, as the text indicates, to present the critique of the artist undertaken by Plato and Diderot. Despite Plato launch his criticism of poetry in The Republic within an ethical-political context; and Diderot, in his turn, in The Paradox of the Comedian, within an aesthetic register, there is an analogous position of the two philosophers regarding the subject. Among many similar points observed between them, we focus our vision into two of them that seemed to us fundamental to such criticism: the notions of pathos and ideal. In both Plato and Diderot one observes that the figure of the artist is always thought of in relation with these notions. Although at first glance, we could be tempted to conclude that, in this relationship, the ideal is presented as an antipode of the passions, we can see more closely that these oscillate: sometimes they show up as a hindrance, sometimes, as a positive reference within the respective critiques; the key to appease this conflict will be temperance (sophrosýne). In view of this, we propose, with this work, to investigate and explain this unstable relationship that one finds in an analogously form in those philosophers.

Female auteurs in evolution: the filmmaking of Claire Denis and Catherine BreillatKupfer, Stephanie 01 August 2018 (has links)
According to the latest Celluloid Ceiling Report, conducted by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, only 7% of all directors working on the top 250 films in the United States in 2014 were women. These bleak statistics no doubt replicate the condition of women in countless other national cinemas. It is, therefore, critical that more attention be given to the women who do manage to succeed in the male-dominated film industry. In my dissertation, I examine the work of two major French women filmmakers, Catherine Breillat and Claire Denis, who have resisted the kind of marginalization and even erasure of women’s presence which this data represents, achieving along the way distinction not just in the French, but in the global cinema context. I analyze their work primarily through the lens of auteur theory and the Cixousian notion of the feminine.
For the purpose of this work, I define an auteur as a filmmaker who has established a distinctive but evolving style as well as a set of thematic preoccupations across a significant number of films and a considerable span of time and whose films are recognizable no matter the subject they treat or the context in which they are made. At its inception, auteur theory signaled a radical break with the tradition of film adaptations and literary screenplays that either did not understand or did not care to exploit the specificity of the filmic medium. Yet, in spite of the revolutionary aspects of auteurism, it has remained somewhat regressive in its recognition of and engagement with gender problematics. The putative gender neutrality of auteurism is, in practice, an assumption of masculinity. Female film directors who achieve auteur status (a minority compared to the number of men given the same consideration) are then marked by their difference, they are not simply auteurs but female auteurs. While this designation is potentially limiting, I assert that it is, in fact, a valuable designation, since it has opened up a space for female filmmakers to rewrite dominant cultural narratives and from a feminine perspective. Claire Denis and Catherine Breillat consistently practice a feminine form of filmmaking, that is, filmmaking that opposes through form and representation, the logical, teleological narratives and adherence to patriarchal values associated with traditional filmmaking. While traditional, masculine filmmaking is designed to halt the proliferation of meaning, feminine filmmaking allows for ellipses, creates a space for the unsaid and the unknowable; it asks questions but does not answer them; it allows the reader or viewer to participate in the production of meaning. These are the kinds of films that Denis and Breillat are making and they need to be recognized for their exemplary artistic contributions as well as the space they have created for others to challenge the status quo in the film industry.

Hydrologic response to spring snowmelt and extreme rainfall events of different landscape elements within a prairie wetland basinLungal, Murray 29 June 2009
Depressions in the prairie pothole region (PPR) are commonly referred to as sloughs and were formed during the most recent glacial retreat, ~10-17 kyrs ago. They are hydrologically isolated, as they are not permanently connected by surface inflow or outflow channels. Extreme thunderstorms are common across the prairies and the hydrologic response of isolated wetlands to intense rainfall events is poorly understood.
The purpose of this study was to compare the response of different landscape/ecological elements of a prairie wetland to snowmelt and extreme rainstorms. Comparisons were completed by investigating the spring snowmelts of 2005 and 2006 and the rainstorm event of June 17 - 18, 2005, in which 103 mm fell at the St. Denis National Wildlife Area (NWA) Saskatchewan, Canada (106°06'W, 52°02'N). The wetland was separated into five landscape positions, the pond center (PC), grassed edge (GE), tree ring (TR), convex upland (CXU), and concave upland (CVU).
Comparison of the rainfall of June 17 18, 2005 with the spring snowmelts of 2005 and 2006 indicates that the hydrologic consequences of these different events are similar. Overland flow, substantial ponding in lowlands, and recharge of the groundwater occur in both cases. Analysis of this intense rainfall has provided evidence that common, intense rainstorms are hydrologically equivalent to the annual spring snowmelt, the major source of water for closed catchments in the PPR.
