Challenges Encountered by Immigrant Dentists while Integrating into the Swedish Labour Market

Alsaghir, Rana January 2023 (has links)
Swedish workforce has a shortage of practitioner dentists in 18 regions which is expected to last until 2035 (Hall Hoppe, 2022). At the same time, immigrant dentists face many challenges that delay or prevent their integration into the Swedish labour market. This paper investigates the process of immigrant dentists’ integration into the Swedish labour market, what obstacles they encounter, and in their perception, what are the requirements to facilitate their integration into the Swedish labour market. This research paper followed a qualitative method to achieve its aims. In order to obtain the necessary data to conduct the research, in-depth interviews were performed with immigrant dentists who received their education in countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. The main empirical findings reveal the need to transform immigrant dentists' human capital. In light of this, immigrant dentists need to choose one of two routes to be eligible to apply for the Swedish dental license, due to the devaluation of their education. Besides the need to master the Swedish language. There is a lack of support provided for the two routes for acquiring the Swedish dental license. The participants clarify that they need more support in both routes. The Knowledge Exams route lacks guidance, materials, and financial support. while the complementary courses route is limited to three cities which makes it challenging forimmigrant dentists to join if they live in a city that does not offer these courses. It also showed the importance of social connections in the licensing process, while it was not essential in the process of obtaining a job. This study informs policymakers and concerned stakeholders about the barriers and challenges immigrant dentists encounter when integrating into the Swedish labour market. Which contributes to making decisions that will help to facilitate immigrantdentists’ integration into the Swedish labour marke.

Students' perceptions of the admissions process for a program for internationally -trained dentists

King, Patricia Ann 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This study is designed to analyze the students' perceptions of the application process for a foreign-trained dental program. The goal was to add to the knowledge base the views of students who have experienced the application process of this type of program. Using a quantitative approach, the method of data collection was through a link to an online Likert survey which was emailed to graduates, first-year and second-year current students of the International Dental Studies (IDS) program at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. Respondents were students who had experienced the IDS application process and had been accepted into the program. The study identified three topics: background, motivation and perception of fairness. The background information identified whether the participant was male/female and whether they were a current first-/second-year student or a graduate of the program. Motivation for applying was identified through questions about knowing someone who was in or had completed the program, and/or applied because of the program's reputation. Perception of fairness was determined by asking how the student felt about each required element of the process. By using structure based upon construct, which provides the researcher with a methodical review and configuration of the information, the study found that students had some views about application elements that, at times, conflicted with school's requirements. However, in general, the students felt the school was requiring the right elements for their application and were, therefore, basing their acceptance decisions on the correct requisites.

The necessity of appliances as protection in patients with prosthetic rehabilitation

Sarwari, Susan January 2013 (has links)
This study aimed to investigate the experiences and habits of dentists when prescribing an appliance as protection in prosthetic therapy in patients. Since there is no published scientific evidence showing that an appliance could be used as a protection in prosthetic therapy it was out of interest to know where dentists obtain their knowledge and if they consider themselves having an adequate competence in this field. The study is based on a survey that examines general dentists as well as dental specialists through a questionnaire with 22 questions out of mixed nature. The study covered 2771 dentists from different parts of Sweden, retrieved from a database of customer records handed by Unident, a dental company. A total of 588 dentists participated in the questionnaire. The use of appliances as protection in patients with prosthetic rehabilitation was considered no to be necessary among 67% of the dentists in this study. However, every 4 out of 5 dentists sometimes include an appliance as protection whenever prosthetic therapy is indicated. Today the literature is very sparse in this subject and there is an obvious need for future studies in a different design besides questionnaires, testing the evidence for a potential protective appliance in patients with prosthetic therapy.

Career choices for foreign-educated dentists

Pitigoi-Aron, Gabriela 01 January 2011 (has links)
Attracting and retaining strong faculty members in dental schools have long been challenges in the United States. Faced with an emerging crisis in the availability and quality of dental educators, many researchers have focused on analyzing data and trends related to this subject. Even though there are substantial studies that provide a picture of why domestic dentists choose to become dental educators, there are no dedicated studies investigating why foreign-educated dentists want to become dental educators. This distinct area is of particular importance as we witness increasing diversity of patients and an increased need for a more diverse health care workforce. The purpose of this study was to analyze the reasons why foreign-educated dentists became dental educators in United States and furthermore, at University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco, California. The research data was collected by means of surveys and in-depth interviews of foreign-trained faculty and IDS graduates on staff at Pacific. The data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics for the survey and a process of thematic analysis for interviews. The surveys' analysis yielded the following six factors that most positively influenced foreign-educated dentists in deciding to embrace a career as an academic educator: (1) Intellectual challenges and stimulation; (2) Opportunity to always be on the cutting edge; (3) Interest in science, new discovery, exploration; (4) Opportunity for regular interaction with other faculty dentists; (5) Desire to be a teacher. (6) Collegial environment of the university. There were two most negative factors identified, as follows: (1) Income differential compared to private practice; (2) Pressure to generate income for the university. Corroborated by analysis of the interviews, the following themes emerged: (1) Drive for research; (2) Desire to be on cutting edge. (3) Desire to share knowledge through teaching; (4) Social and personal factors and perceptions with emphasis on mentors' influence; (5) Negative influence of salary difference with respect to private practitioners. The findings of this study were similar to the available studies on foreign-trained dentists and to most of the studies already done on domestically trained dentists. The major factors found were comparable with the up-to-date literature. The elevated research drive, the intellectual challenges, the work environment, the desire to teach, and the mentors' influence were among those which mirrored almost perfectly the other studies. Some fine differences were found for foreign-trained dentists, such as a lighter financial burden caused by smaller student debt and the irrelevance of military practice experience. The study provides a number of suggestions for enhancing the recruiting and retaining process for dental academia: (1) Support and enhance the research capacity of dental schools; (2) Create structures to develop mentors; (3) Invest to build prestige; (4) Find creative ways to offset lower salaries; (5) Foster a pleasant academic working environment; (6) Use international activities to recruit international dentists. The study revealed factors that have been influential in participants' decisions to choose an academic career, in general and at Pacific. It is hoped that this study will be a useful reference in the increasingly difficult endeavor of adding and retaining world-class dental educators.

Responsabilidade civil do cirurgião dentista: o pós-tratamento ortodôntico / The dentist surgeon´s civil responsability: the orthodontic post-treatment.

Fernandes, Fernando 14 December 2000 (has links)

The aim of this study was to identify professional profiles subgroups based on job-related variables and perception about profession in a sample of former students of a Brazilian public dental school the School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Goias, who graduated between 1988 and 2007. Academic and professional data were gathered from obtained from the University Registrar s Office and the Federal Council of Dentistry, respectively. A web-based password protected questionnaire about job-related variables and perception about profession was sent individually by e-mail to the former students using a software manager. Descriptive and cluster analysis (Two-step cluster), between-groups comparison and multiple logistic regression were used for data analysis. Answer rate was 53.0, predominantly female (64.9%) and mean age was 34-years (SD=6.0). Automatic selection of optimal number of clusters included 289 cases (89.8%) in 3 natural clusters. Clusters 1, 2 and 3 included 52.2, 30.8 and 17.0% of the sample, respectively. Interpretation of within-group rank of variable importance for cluster segmentation make the following characterization of clusters: Cluster 1 specialty dentists with higher profits and positive views of profession; Cluster 2 general dental practitioners in small cities; Cluster 3 underpaid and less motivated dentists with negative views of profession. Male dentists were predominant in cluster 1 and female in cluster 3. One-way Anova showed that age and time since graduation were significantly lower in Cluster 2 (p<0.001) and academic performance was lower in cluster 1a. Alternative solution with 4 and 5 clusters showed specific discrimination of cluster 1 by gender and dental education professionals. Logistic regression showed that dissatisfaction with profession was associated to lower workload (OR= 4.06; p=0.012) and lower profits (OR=3.99; p=0.006) and overall negative views of professional performance (OR=6.04; p=0.016) and success (OR=8.18; p≤0.001). It was concluded that characteristics of this sample are similar to others in Brazil: predominance of women, tendency towards specialization, concentration in larger cities and high weekly workload. Cluster analysis was a valuable method for identifying natural grouping with relative homogeneous cases, providing information potentially meaningful for professional orientation in Dentistry in a variety of professional situations and environments.

Infekcijų kontrolė odontologijoje odontologinės sveikatos priežiūros specialistų požiūriu / Attitudes towards infection control among dental health care professionals

Rimkuvienė, Jūratė 30 June 2011 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The oral flora is one of the most ecologically diverse microbial populiations known to man. It has been proved that any dental intervention: dental preparation, professional oral hygiene, extraction of teeth, regular prophylactic examination of patient‘s mouth is related with a possible spread of infection. Therefore, one of the most important tasks for the dental care professionals is to prevent the spread of infection and create safe environment for a patient, the dentist himself and other dental staff The aim of the present study is to identify and evaluate the attitudes of Lithuanian dental health care professionals towards infection control and carried out infection control procedures, and to determine vaccination frequency against hepatitis B among dental health care professionals. The study highlighteningt the dental health care professionals‘ attitude towards infection control and infection control procedures as well as incompliance of infection control procedures with the valid normative documentation was conducted at the Institute of Odontology, Faculty of Medicine, Vilnius University in 2008-2010. All 2,235 Lithuanian dentists, registered in the Lithuanian Dental Chamber Registry in 2008 and carrying general practice dentist‘s license, all 1,814 dental assistants and all 370 dental hygienists registered in 2010 (according to the database of the Lithuanian Dental Chamber Registry) were invited to take part in the investigation.
