Examining Truancy Board Effectiveness in Countering Student Absenteeism in Grades K-5 in Three Title I Schools in Northeast Tennessee.

Clark, Jennifer Grace 03 May 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to determine the association between the use of a truancy board and the number of student absences in K - 5 students in 3 Title I schools in northeast Tennessee. Absences were compiled on students who attended the same elementary school over the 4 years of the study, 2003-2004 through 2006-2007. Two years of absences were combined for the 2 years prior to the implementation of the truancy board, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. The data were then compared to the combined number of days for the 2 years following implementation, 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. A paired samples t test, an ANOVA, and an independent samples t test were used to analyze data regarding the affect of the truancy board on student attendance in K - 5 students. The results of the study indicated there was no significant difference in the number of days absent for the students in the 3 schools in the 2 years following the implementation of a truancy board as compared to the 2 years prior to implementation. The results of the study also indicated there was no significance with student gender. Male and female students were absent at about the same rate after the truancy board implementation as before. Socioeconomic status for each student was also examined. Students who qualified for the free and reduced lunch program were considered to have a low socioeconomic status and students not qualifying were considered to have a high socioeconomic status. Both groups of students were absent about the same number of days after the truancy board implementation as before.

Problematika kázně se zaměřením na 1. stupeň ZŠ. / The Issue of Discipline with Focus on Primary Schools.

Fast, David January 2019 (has links)
THE ABSTRACT This diploma thesis is taking a theoretical insight into a discipline based on philosophical, psychological, sociological and pedagogical point of view. A legal point of view is included as far as the school behavior code goes. The author is researching inner and outer factors which are having an impact on the discipline. Many aspects are taking a role in this including teacher's authority or the environmental condition of the whole class. The thesis is then searching an answers for such a questions as 'what would the most common discipline problem be" that we would be able to come into a contact with at our elementary schools. This mainly focuses on smaller elementary school children. Thesis describes many individual approaches and techniques frequently used to deal with specific discipline problematics or that could potentially be used to prevent faulty behavior. The author separates different approaches regarding small scale schools with just a few students in classes. This is supported by author's own experience gained in such a school. The thesis also gives an account of how the school cooperates with a family. The whole separate chapter belongs to acting classes and how it helps with learning when used properly. There has been a long-term observation on how the children are behaving...

Discipline Problems Related to IDEA 1997 for Special Education Students During 1999-2000

Shumate, Carolynn Bissett 27 January 2003 (has links)
The two research questions that guided this qualitative, descriptive case study were: 1. What staff development and training occurred since IDEA 1997 and what would be recommended in the future in a selected Virginia school district regarding the discipline problems of students with disabilities. 2. How had one Virginia school district responded, implemented and resolved disciplinary problems (including barriers) as related to IDEA 1997 for specific students with disabilities who were in need of disciplinary measures during the 1999-2000 school year? The seven selected students with disabilities were chosen based on their disciplinary actions as related to five interview guide questions that focused on some new IDEA 1997 disciplinary regulations. Sources came from a review of formal and informal records, interviews, observations, and follow-up based on data analysis. These questions dealt with the disciplinary issues involving: 1. Multiple short-term removals. 2. Change of placements. 3. Interim alternative settings. 4. Removal for more than ten days. 5. Disciplinary change of placement. 6. Discipline whereas a functional assessment and behavioral implementation plans, strategies and supports were reviewed for students with disabilities in need of disciplinary action. Themes, patterns and recommendations were given at the school district and at the state level. Recommendations for further study were made. Within this school district, three surfaced themes as part of lessons learned were noted. These themes were a) the revolving door of homebound placement, b) monitor and compliance issues, and c) documentation concerns for students with disabilities as mandated by IDEA 1997. Ten patterns were noted as related to the seven students with disabilities due to their disciplinary actions. All seven students with disabilities had a long history of special education placements, attendance problems and were recommended for counseling. Six of these student's parents were minimally involved with their child's progress. Six of these students were drug involved. Positive interventions, strategies and supports were utilized for five of these students when receiving disciplinary consequences. Five of these students with disabilities had other difficult family issues. Four of these students with disabilities were court involved while one student was involved with the community services board. Three students had work experiences and three students had low to average intelligence. Other noteworthy considerations involving climate and culture, money and safety were discussed. / Ed. D.

Managing learner behaviour: a collective case study of three effective secondary schools

Tiwani, Stormburg Vuyile 11 1900 (has links)
This study deals with the way school principals, educators and learners manage learner behaviour inside the classrooms, as well as in the entire school for the effective and uninterrupted realisation of teaching and learning activities. A qualitative approach was used in this study. The research findings were based on observations, the analysis of documents, as well as the main and sub-categories that were formulated from the interview data gathered at the selected schools. The research confirmed what is already known on learner discipline and discipline problems. In the dissertation more attention is given to factors that contribute to misbehaviour, the impact of misbehaviour on the culture of learning and teaching, and how learner behaviour should be managed in the classrooms and in the schools in general. Furthermore, effective measures of managing learner behaviour are explained and a comprehensive school-wide model of preventing and remediating learner misbehaviour is also provided. / M. Ed.
