The politics of post-industrial cultural knowledge work

Stettler, René January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation conducts in-depth inquiries into the practices, nature and theory of post-industrial cultural work and the humanities- and arts-based civic dialogues which cultural work promotes. Given the broad neglect of utopian thinking in the mainstream of critical social science and in an attempt to sketch out a vision of an alternative future, the aim of this thesis is to outline an “epistemology” for post-industrial cultural work as well as to reflect upon the outlook for educational cultural work practices and their function as a catalyst for civic dialogue and cultural change. The main concerns are the signification, interests and aims embodied in cultural production touching on issues of cultural and scientific learning, alternative modes of democratic governance of science and technology (Felt, Wynne et al. 2007), industrial society’s logic of accumulation and market rationality, the primacy of contemporary instrumental and capitalist values, neoliberalism, globalization and cosmopolitanism. With a view to addressing elementary questions regarding the future of cultural work, which are explored and theorised alongside future perspectives of a new form of knowledge work for the humanities and the arts, the actual challenges of cultural work are considered from within the wider context of the risk society (Beck 1986) and the threats which affect everybody today. In relying on Beck’s (2009) conceptualization of the world risk society as a “non-knowledge society” characterised by the global existence of incalculable risks/threats and non-knowing, the thesis addresses the problem of non-knowledge and unrecognised contingencies as a challenge for cultural work to design processes of (un)learning in civic dialogues. In exploring the social, cultural and political relevance of three empirical case studies, the thesis ventures into the prospects of a new socio-epistemological perspective for cultural work and workspaces for knowledge. The studies investigate three different (techno-)socio-cultural spaces of knowledge: a public exhibition about the new Gotthard Base Tunnel currently under construction in the Swiss Alps, Jennifer Baichwal’s film Manufactured Landscapes (2006) about the Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky and China’s industrial revolution, and the living intervention Fairytale at Documenta 12, 2007, which brought 1,001 Chinese citizens to Kassel, Germany. Actor-Network Theory (ANT) is employed as a tool for the analysis of the material-semiotic properties of differing knowledges, the heterogeneous relations of socio-economic networks, and the global and uncertain conditions of the post-industrial world in which cultural work is embedded. What is colloquially referred to as post-industrial cultural knowledge work in this thesis is elaborated in the context of a propositional socio-epistemological second-order framework (Von Foerster 1984; Pakman 2003) for cultural work and its entanglements with ethics, aesthetics, pragmatics, politics—and biopolitical production (Hardt and Negri 2000; 2009). In order to build “third spaces” of knowledge (Turnbull 2000) and to nurture uncertainty-oriented approaches and contingencies, the findings propose the development of more open, (self-)reflexive and anticipating forms of thinking and acting in cultural production fields with the aim to catalyse societal developments, to foster intrinsic values and to create cultural workplace identities with a moral-ecological-political awareness (cf. Banks 2006; 2007) invoking new interactions between viewers, audiences and the environment.

David, Isabelle 01 1900 (has links)
Introduction: Health professionals are increasingly encouraged to adopt an evidence-based practice. However, gaps continue to be observed between scientific evidence and practice. Through its interactive capabilities, Web 2.0 can contribute to an evidence-based practice by improving exchange of relevant clinical and scientific information’s. Objective: This study is a part of a project that wants to design a Web 2.0 platform for health professionals working with stroke patients. The aim is to gain a better understanding of professionals’ perceptions of Web 2.0 before platform development. Methods: A qualitative study following the phenomenological approach was chosen. We conducted individual semi-structured interviews with 24 clinicians and managers. Results: Interviewed people were all women with a mean age of 45 years (± 18). Knowledge transfer was identified to be the most useful outcome of a Web 2.0 platform. Respondents also expressed their need for a user-friendly platform. Results also highlight a time paradox. Clinicians feel that the Web 2.0 will help them save time while they argue that they will not have time to use it. Conclusion: While Web 2.0 remains a knowledge transfer tool not yet integrated in clinical practice, professionals working with stroke patients generally receive its implementation positively.

Lacombe, Anne-Marie 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis takes an archival perspective in order to examine the work of Robert Rauschenberg, an American artist who gained notoriety in the New-York art scene of the sixties. It is relevant to see appropriation art strategies by artists like Rauschenberg as a way of having « set up the table » for the archival art movement that would follow, starting in the late eighties and early nineties. The artist's connexions with the archives are first studied. Then, an archival reading of a corpus of his artworks is conducted in order to learn about his particular use of the archives. The conditions of use are raised, along with the conception of archives as memory and, at last, the relationship between archives and photography.

Archive(s) : approche dialectique et exploitation artistique

Klein, Anne 09 1900 (has links)
This thesis proposes a dialectical reversal in the archival science concept whose central point is the use of archives rather than the production of records. The first chapters outline the various understandings of the archives since the creation of national institutions in the 19th century until a renewed approach done by some archivists defining themselves as postmodernists in the late 20th century. The history of the archives and the archival science shows two coexistent views which appear as essentially contradictory in that one (traditional) is centered on the creator of the records, and the past understood as the set of actions performed by the creator, while the other (postmodern) is based on the social functions of the archives and the archivist’s role. Following the dialectical thought of Walter Benjamin, the fourth chapter proposes to think the dual nature of archives as documents and testimony while articulating that thought about the archive as a means of inscription of self in time. It appears that the archives can be considered as an objectification of the past within a chronological temporality at the heart of which resides, latently, the archive as a potential emancipator. The artistic use of archives as presented in the fifth chapter shows how this particular type of exploitation highlights the fact that the archives are bound by their conditions of use, which are also the conditions of existence of the archive. Among the issues addressed by the artists, those of memory, authenticity, archives as a means of appropriating the world, and as a poetical object become as many possible entry point to revisit the archival science. The last chapter summarizes all the proposed renewals detailed throughout the thesis. We envision a non-chronological temporality where the archives, objects of the past handled by a singular current dialectic, are being oriented towards both the past and the future. New opportunities are being offered for the archival science from the new properties being assigned to the archives by the artists. Finally, it is the life cycle of the archives itself that can be revised by including the exploitation as a key dimension.

Contributions for Advanced Service Discovery in Ad hoc Networks / Contributions pour une découverte de services avancée dans les réseaux ad hoc

Leclerc, Tom 24 November 2011 (has links)
In the last decade, the number of wireless capable devices increased drastically along with their popularity. Devices also became more powerful and affordable, attracting more users to mobile networks. In this thesis we consider service discovery in Mobile Ad hoc NETworks, also called MANETs, that are a collection of devices that communicate with each other spontaneously whenever they are in wireless transmission range without any preexisting infrastructure. The main characteristic of MANETs is the high dynamic of nodes (induced by the users moving around), the volatile wireless transmissions, the user behavior, the services and their usage. This thesis proposes a complete solution for service discovery in ad hoc networks, from the underlying network up to the service discovery itself. A first contribution is the Stable Linked Structure Flooding (SLSF) protocol that creates stable based cluster structure and thereby provides scalable and efficient message dissemination. The second contribution is the Stable Linked Structure Routing (SLSR) protocol that uses the SLSF dissemination structure to enable routing capabilities. Using those protocols as basis, we propose to improve service discovery by additionally considering context awareness and adaptation. Moreover, we also contributed on improving simulations by coupling simulators and models that, together, can model and simulate the variety and richness of ad hoc related usage scenarios and their human characteristic

Premiers travaux relatifs au concept de matière communicante : Processus de dissémination des informations relatives au produit / The first work related to the concept of communicatiing material : information dissemination process for product-related data

Kubler, Sylvain 07 November 2012 (has links)
Over the last decade, communities involved with intelligent-manufacturing systems (IMS - Intelligent Manufacturing Systems, HMS - Holonic Manufacturing System) have demonstrated that systems that integrate intelligent products can be more efficient, flexible and adaptable. Intelligent products may prove to be beneficial economically, to deal with product traceability and information sharing along the product lifecycle. Nevertheless, there are still some open questions such as the specification of what information should be gathered, stored and distributed and how it should be managed during the lifecycle of the product. The contribution of this thesis is to define a process for disseminating information related to the product over its lifecycle. This process is combined with a new paradigm, which changes drastically the way we view the material. This concept aims to give the ability for the material to be intrinsically and wholly "communicating". The data dissemination process allow users to store context-sensitive information on communicating product. In addition to the data dissemination process, this thesis gives insight into the technological and scientific research fields inherent to the concept of "communicating material", which remain to be explored

A regulação da contratação internacional de transferência de tecnologia: perspectiva do direito de propriedade industrial, das normas cambiais e tributárias do direito concorrencial / The regulation of the international contracting of transfer of technology: perspective under industrial property law, tax law, currency exchange controls, and competititon law

Franco, Karin Klempp 02 August 2010 (has links)
The international transfer of technology is an operation that serves as a basis for technological development. Well beyond the contrast indigenous development versus importation of technology, the importation of technology also generates preconditions for the development of local innovation. A key component of any transfer of technology process is the effective transfer of expertise and intangible know-how that ensure the production capacity. The transfer of technology vehicle is not a simple form of building innovation capacity. Through it, the consequences of the transfer of technology are determined by the overall purposes sought by the companies that convene this and certainly does not cover the dissemination of the technology to potential competitors. Within the context of the northsouth technological conflict that still exists, streamlining of antitrust law and of intellectual property law considering the public interest lays precisely on the management of the intention of the countries that own the technology to sustain their monopoly and restrict the access to the technology and the intention of the acquiring countries to have broad access and use of the technology. The policy of incrementing transfer of international technology depends not only on regional and international policies, but also on national policies, being necessary to analyze viable courses for the policies in the existing national and international framework. The Brazilian industrialization was guided in the direction of generation of production capacity adopting international standards that were relatively obsolete and by imposing obstacles to imports, substantially affecting the countrys capacity to generate, transfer and adopt new technologies. The technology transfer regulations that accompanied it had as its main pillars the replacement of imports and tax and currency exchange controls over the payments of the agreements to stabilize the countrys foreign trade deficit. This continues to exist, with minimal changes. It is incumbent on the Government to clearly outline in its industrial policy the type and form of the control that it intends to use in the importation of technology into Brazil and with what purpose. Further, it is necessary to harmonize the several statutes that apply to the operation so that they reflect coherency among each other. Coherence shall be attained upon selecting the vectors that define the regulation in a consistent manner. The regulation should concentrate on the absorption of the know-how by the local workers, but without discouraging the foreign supplier. Both goals would be met upon (i) softening the regulation under the tax and exchange aspects, and (ii) fostering greater interaction between the regulation in the intellectual property and antitrust laws areas, which should focus on the contractual clauses. As regards the antitrust policy, it is necessary to distinguish between an antitrust policy that is based solely on innovation and that which is based on the dissemination of the innovation. When only innovation is focused and dissemination is hindered, the bonus that is now being conferred to innovation and that will have a toll in the future is ignored. An antitrust policy that is intended to foster the dissemination and absorption of technology cannot be a task borne only by the antitrust authorities.

Adaptive solutions for data sharing in vehicular networks / Solutions adaptatives pour le partage de données dans les réseaux de véhicules

Pimenta de Moraes Junior, Hermes 04 May 2018 (has links)
In the context of Intelligent Transportation Systems - ITS, vehicles may have a lot of sensors (e.g. cameras, lidars, radars) and applications (collision avoidance, traffic monitoring, etc.) generating data. They represent then an important source of information. Local applications can significantly increase their effectiveness by sharing such an information within the network. Data accuracy, confidence and pertinence can be verified when receiving data from other nodes. Therefore, we believe that an important question to answer in this context is: “How to efficiently share data within such an environment?” Data sharing is a complex task in dynamic networks. Many concerns like intermittent connections, network density variation and communication spectrum congestion arise. A usual approach to handle these problems is based on periodic processes. Indeed, a message sent many times can reach its destination even with intermittent connections and low density networks. Nevertheless, within high density networks, they may lead to communication spectrum scarcity. In this thesis we address the problem of data sharing in dynamic networks by relying in so-called horizons of pertinence. A horizon is defined as an area within which an information is expected to be received. We start focusing on data sharing within direct neighbors (at 1-hop of distance). Then we propose a solution to construct a map of neighbors, centered in the ego-node, within a horizon of n-hops. Finally, we relax the horizon definition to a dynamic defined one where different data items may reach different distances (hops). Regarding the solution for 1-hop horizons, our adaptive technique takes into account nodes’ dynamics and network load. In order to ensure an effective data dissemination in different scenarios, the sending messages frequency is defined according to vehicles movements and an estimation of the network loss rate. Following, we focus on the map of neighbors up to n-hops of distance. As communicationwith distant nodes brings additional concerns (forwarding actions, larger delays, out-of-date information), a trust evaluation of identified nodes and a reliability estimation of the multi-hop path to each neighbor is added to the map. Instead of running separated disseminating processes, our third contribution deals with a cooperative strategy with the main goal of disseminating data while satisfying most of the nodes. For this purpose a unique frame is forwarded from node to node. Its payload is locally updated so that it contains the most relevant data items according to some criteria (e.g. urgency, relevance). Such a strategy defines thus a data-centered horizon. We validate our proposals by means of realistic network emulations. From all our studies and achieved results we can state that our approach brings interesting insights for data sharing in dynamic networks like VANETs.

Bancos de dados hierárquicos em inquéritos epidemiológicos / Hierarchical Databases in Epidemiological Surveys

Barbieri, Silvio Fernando 09 September 2008 (has links)
Introduction - Concern about the quality and data dissemination in surveys is growing in the world. The integration between database, sample planning, questionnaire and data entry is fundamental to the accuracy and validity of the results. The bibliography showed that investigations rarely produce organized files, standardized and ready to dissemination, which makes impossible the study of various investigation objects based on information already collected. Goals - Implement hierarchical model for data entry in epidemiological surveys. Methods - It was used the UML (Unified Modeling Language) for the logical project and the Epi Info Makeview to obtain the data files. The tests were made in a census block of the Access to Medicines - FAPESP survey. The documentation was generated in Makeview with help of an Excel macro. Results - The model allows you to create flexible relational files, as the need to study subject, with statistical units chosen amongst the 4 hierarchical levels: census blocks, households, individuals and specific issues. Conclusion - The ability to create infinite views on the data represents a breakthrough in comparison to the flat files. It should be used as standard in epidemiological surveys, it allows studying the effect of conglomeration of analysis\' units, besides enabling the dissemination with organized data. The Epi Info can be used to implement hierarchical models that consider the variables of a sampling plan.

This thesis, situated within the scope of Textual Discourse Analysis (TDA), presents the results of our investigation, which investigates how the linguistic phenomenon of Enunciative Responsibility (ER) is materialized on reported speech segments on the main texts of scientific dissemination news articles, written for the lay public, which are compositionally organized as dossiers, with the purpose of verifying what the observable patterns can disclose with regard to the (non-)assumption of ER or to the argumentative orientation given to texts by the speaker/enunciator, considering their discursive purposes. More specifically, (1) we identified linguistic or typographic strategies of RE materialization that emerged within the following categories: (i) different types of speech representation and (ii) indication of mediating instances, which are subdivided into (a) type of convoked voice and designation, (b) type of reported speech, (c) type of introductory verb of reported speech; and (d) type of posture and enunciative effacement; (2) we describe and analyze strategies of RE materialization in these subcategories, in order to confirm its possible relevance to the respective argumentative orientation; (3) we verify how the organization of individual or third-party PdV reveals the (non-)assumption of RE; (4) we establish the degree of engagement or disengagement expressed in the main texts; (5) we compare the results with the purpose of identifying the tendency revealed through the genre analysis. The research work includes description, analysis and interpretation of a corpus composed of three samples of the dossier discourse genre, published on Superinteressante magazine. It is a bibliographical, documentary study, carrying a quantitative and qualitative analysis, based on two from the eight analytical categories proposed by Adam (2011, 2012). In order to observe the category (ii) indication of mediating instances, we base our analysis in Guentchéva (1990, 1994, 1996, 2011), who developed the mediation category (MGC). In addition, as theoretical support, we take into account the considerations of Rabatel (2003, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2016) and Rabatel and Chauvin-Vileno (2006) concerning the notions of syncretism, speaker/enunciator, Point of View (POV), prise en charge énonciative, imputation, posture and enunciative effacement. This theoretical framework points to the necessity of unfolding the categories (i) e (ii) into the above-mentioned subcategories (a), (b), (c) and (d), which optimize the analysis. Thus, in order to integrate more refined classifications to these subcategories, we also based our study on the following authors: Alrahabi and Desclés (2009), Calsamiglia and Cassany (2011), Calsamiglia and López Ferrero (2003), Desclés (2009, 2016), Maingueneau (2002), Marnette (2004), Thompson and Yiyun (1991) and Petit (2000). Concerning the genre, we searched in Charaudeau (2006, 2008a, 2009, 2016) subsidies for the study of science mediatization discourse, such as the communication contract; and from Adam and Lugrin (2000, 2006) and Lugrin (2000, 2001) we sought bases for the study of the multitext’s or dossier’s compositional configuration. Regarding the main results of this research, we observed that speakers/enunciators exert their influence as super-enunciators and establish the respective argumentative orientation, in view of their discursive purposes. In addition, the thesis reveals the importance of strategic choices marked on reported speech textual segments as productive tools for genre studies. We highlight that the theoretical combination chosen in this research is able to offer a more comprehensive vision concerning the ER phenomenon in this genre, an instrument of analysis to scientific mediatization discourse producers, as well as a contribution to studies in Applied Linguistics.
