Continuous riparian vegetation change following a large, infrequent flood along the Sabie River, Kruger National Park / Philip AyresAyres, Philip January 2012 (has links)
The flood of 2000 caused extensive changes within the riparian landscape of the Sabie River, Kruger National Park (KNP). Changes within the riparian landscape and the removal of vegetation resulted in considerable changes in riparian vegetation characteristics. Open patches created by the flood served as a template for the establishment of new species and the regeneration of existing species, which consequently resulted in a patch mosaic. This memorable event encouraged an investigation into the response of the Sabie River ecosystem to the memorable Large Infrequent Disturbance (LID).
Riparian ecosystems are driven by varying combinations of environmental factors, such as water availability, disturbance, herbivory, fire and river morphology. This complexity depicts unique vegetation structure and assemblages of associated plant species. The lack of sufficient knowledge on the role of riparian vegetation in the health assessment of surrounding ecosystems along semi-arid rivers prompted the establishment of the Kruger Rivers Post Flood Research Program (KRPFRP).
Research conducted through this monitoring program four years after the 2000 flood, revealed no significant changes in the species composition, although the location and density of many common riparian species have been changed. There was a decrease in species density across the macro channel floor (MCF) and an increase in species density across the macro channel bank (MCB). Furthermore, it was reported that the flood altered the distribution of height classes across the macro channel. In general the riparian vegetation was shorter and bushier four years post-flood. These studies furthermore illustrated that the tree to shrub ratio did not change drastically from pre-flood conditions, although a decrease in the number of shrub individuals was reported.
The research presented in this dissertation was designed to further explore changes in woody species composition and structure along the Sabie River, KNP at a post flood temporal interval, i.e. between the last survey in 2004 (by the KRPFRP) and 2010. For data compatibility, the sampling and analytical approach of this study conforms to the approach followed by the KRPFRP. Data were sampled within four preselected belt-transects that form part of the larger KRPFRP. All established woody individuals were counted and measured within each contiguous 10 m x 30 m plot within each of the four belt-transects.
Log transformed species composition data were analysed through the application of the Bray Curtis dissimilarity index in combination with Ward’s method of clustering. Statistical significant differences between clusters were tested through the application of the Fisher’s exact relationship test. The MIXED Procedure or PROC MIXED model was used to investigate change within the vegetation structural data.
Results obtained through the various analytical methods broadly support the findings of the KRPFRP. No significant change in woody species composition could be detected between 2004 and 2010. However, a change in the density (increase and decrease) of certain species across the MCB and MCF was revealed. Species richness and density increased significantly on the MCF oppose to small changes on the MCB.
A significant increase in the total number of shrubs on the MCF contributed to an overall increase in woody density for the entire study area between 2004 and 2010. Shrubs therefore remained the most dominant growth form in both sampling years. Trees decreased across the MCB although the total number of established trees remained unchanged between 2004 and 2010.
Riparian vegetation structure is directly linked to species assemblages, hence the continued dominance of shrub species along the Sabie River in the KNP The Sabie River riparian landscape is therefore still characterised by short and multi-stemmed woody individuals ten years after the LID. / Thesis (MSc (Environmental Sciences))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013

Vliv pyrethroidových pesticidů na ryby / The effect of pyrethroid based pesticides on fishRICHTEROVÁ, Zuzana January 2016 (has links)
Pyrethroids are ones of the most used pesticides worldwides. The widespread use and high stability of pyrethroids lead to the assumption of that their occurrence in the environment could be quite frequent. They can reach water ecosystem as pollutants. Residues of pyrethroids are not only detected in the water column, but also in sediments and in fish tissues. The first study was devoted to the product Nexide containing 60 g.l-1 of active substance gamma-cyhalothrin. Tested Nexide concentrations were 5, 25, 50, 100, and 250 µg.l-1. Early life stage test was used.Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) was tested. There were significant mortalities in all concentrations except the lowest concentration during the trial. The lowest concentration tested 5 µg.l-1 only caused a slightly increased mortality. This lowest concentration influenced the growth in length and weight negatively, decelerated ontogenetic development, and made the body surface of the individuals darker. Histopathology of individuals from this concentration revealed dystrophy in liver. Examination of kidney, intestine and gills did not show significant histopathological differences compared with control. The evaluation of selected parameters of oxidative stress demonstrated a significantly higher activity of detoxification enzyme glutathione-S.transferase (GST) and a significantly lower activity of defensive enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx) compared with the control group. The other examined parameters of oxidative stress such as catalase (CAT), glutation reductase (GR), and lipid peroxidation determined by using the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARs) were comparable to the control group. Changes in oxidative stress parameters suggest that exposure of the organism to the product Nexide in the given concentration leads to dysbalance of defensive enzymes. The second study was devoted to the product Cyperkill 25 EC containing 250 g.l-1. Tested Cyperkill 25 EC concentrations were 7.2, 36, 72, 144, and 360 µg.l-1. The procedure of the trial was the same as the preceded one. There were 100% mortalities in all concentrations except the lowest concentration during the trial. The lowest tested concentration 7.2 µg.l-1 allowed 90% of individuals to stay alive till the end of experiment. The lowest concentration influenced the growth in length and weight negatively and decelerated ontogenetic development compared with the control. Any individual exposed to this concentration did not reach juvenile stage until the end of the trial. Dark pigmentation was visible in 68% of these exposed individuals on the last day. Similar darkening was visible in individuals from higher concentrations shortly before death too. Histological examination did not revealed significant changes in intestine, liver, kidney, and gills compared with the control group. Evaluation of selected parameters of oxidative stress demonstrated significantly lower activities of GST, GR, and GPx. Activities of CAT and TBARS were comparable with the control group. Changes in oxidative stress parameters suggest that exposure of the organism to the product Cyperkill 25 EC in the given concentration could induce oxidative stress and interfere with the activities of antioxidant enzymes. The presented thesis summarises actual data about pyrethroids and their influence on fish. The demonstrated effects confirm high susceptibility of early developmental stages of fish to tested pesticides. When interpreting the results, we have to take into account the fact that studies showed this risk even on single pyrethroid substances. But water organisms are exposed to many other more or less toxic products and substances in a real environment. These xenobiotics could react with each other and their mixture could even potentiate negative effects. The performed studies also clearly show the significant differences in the sensitivity of embryonic and embryolarval tests.

The implementation of humour as deflective technique in contact boundary disturbanceJacobs, Susanne 30 November 2007 (has links)
One potent, yet little recognized tool in therapy is humour. As the desire to be entertained through humour is near universal the establishment and return of a positive sense of humour may be considered a goal of therapy. The goal of Gestalt exploration is awareness. From its origin Gestalt theory includes addressing body experiences such as laughter and emotional expression through humour.
In Gestalt Theory a contact boundary disturbance such as deflection refers to the ways in which individuals may refuse contact with their environment in order to avoid aware¬ness.
The goal of this study was to explore the implementation of humour as a deflective technique where contact boundary disturbances occur, to bring about change. Aspects of humour, namely the ability to perceive the comic as well as the ability to produce it, aid therapy and relationship building, and help the client to deflect in a way that enhances emotional well-being. / Humor, geringskat in terapie, is 'n uiters sterk hulpmiddel.
eksplorasie is bewuswording.
tegniek, waar kontak grens versteuringe en weerstande voorkom, as verandering
Social Work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

The use of gestalt therapy to re-write life scriptHitge, Erika 30 November 2006 (has links)
The aim of this research was to determine how Gestalt Therapy could be utilised to re-write life script. Transactional Analysis terminology was translated into Gestalt Therapy, especially the terms life script, life position and re-writing in the literature study. Gestalt Therapy concepts of importance for the research were also discussed in the literature study. An empirical study was conducted, involving one respondent, for whom Gestalt Therapy sessions were provided with the aim of determining how life script could be re-written through such intervention. Gestalt Therapy concepts and life script concepts were identified during the therapy process. A re-written life script was formulated by the researcher corresponding with the level of functioning of the respondent during therapy and in relation to the respondent's life position. The researcher deducts from the entire study, but especially from the empirical study that life script can be re-written by means of utilising Gestalt Therapy. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

Análise e Desenvolvimento de um Retificador Trifásico de 12 Pulsos com Autotransformador e Conversores SEPIC Isolados / Analysis and Development of a 12-Phase Three-Phase Rectifier with Autotransformer and Isolated SEPIC ConvertersCosta Neto, Antônio de Oliveira 23 February 2018 (has links)
A utilização do autotransformador contribui
confiabilidade do processo.
With the constant increase of electronic components inserted in the diverse areas of electronics
at the present time, it becomes evident a concern of harmonic disturbances of
current in the quality of the energy. This work has the purpose of addressing one of
the alternatives to reduce this problem, developed a 12-pulse rectifier with two DC-DC
SEPIC converters of 500 W in each rectifier, with galvanic isolation, operating in continuous
conduction and with high power factor and low harmonic distortion in the rectifier
input current. The use of the autotransformer contributes to the reduction of the weight
and volume of the structure, being an insulation made on the intermediate stage of high
frequency. The connection between a load and the multi-pulse rectifier is conventionally
made from the use of special interface transformers. They include a complex design and
still have considerable weight and volume. Therefore, these special transformers are replaced
by the static converters, which guarantee the balance between each rectifier group
and obtain regular output voltage.
This structure can be used in a variety of applications, such as driving electric machines,
battery chargers and aircraft, performing functions previously controlled by hydraulic,
pneumatic and mechanical mechanisms, increasing the reliability of the process.
This work presents in detail the development of two control strategies, with the objective
of balancing the power processing between each module and regulating the output voltage.
The computational and experimental results were obtained through the construction of a
prototype. / Dissertação (Mestrado)

Previous issue date: 2015-08-21 / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo / We study the behavior of the Earth-ionosphere waveguide through the modeling of the propagation of very low frequency radio waves (VLF). We use the computational model LWPC (Long Wave Propagation Capability) to estimate changes in amplitude and phase of the VLF signals detected by the SAVNET network (South America VLF NETwork), and thus try to understand the behavior of the lower ionosphere under different ionization conditions. The research was divided into two parts. The first part investigates the behavior of the VLF signals in quiescent regimes of ionization. Amplitude and phase simulations for the were carried out, modifying adapting polynomials for the β and h parameters (or Wait s parameters) as a function of the zenithal angle. The second part of this research, uses these polynomials in the study of the lower ionosphere under transient ionization regimes in two distinct conditions: first during of solar flares and second during solar eclipse. For the simulations under solar flare conditions, we calculate the changes in β and ℎ′ parameters during the 25/03/2008 solar explosion. With these values, we
calculate the electronic density profile through an exponential model and we find that the electronic density at 75 km is ∼ 104 cm−3, that is twenty times higher than during quiescent conditions. To evaluate our parameter estimates, we calculate the variation of the Wait s parameters for the case of twelve solar events of different classes. We note that the variations Δℎ′ found in this work are larger than that in Muraoka, Murata e Sato (1977) because they consider the variations in the conductivity gradient. For the solar eclipse simulations on 11/07/2011, we investigate its effect on the VLF phase. For this, we use the obscuration coefficient to estimate the guide height variation along the whole path during the eclipse. The simulations reproduce the phase behavior during the eclipse. However, a delay of about twenty four minutes was observed between the simulated and observed measurements. The observed delay is a direct consequence of own estimates of the perturbed ionospheric height and it causal relation with the obscuration during the eclipse. lower ionosphere, VLF, modeling, ionospheric disturbances, solar flares, solar eclipse.
