Propaganda Powers Social Reform: The Visual Rhetoric of Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, and Norman Rockwell

Halling, Shelly Stock 01 May 2015 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the visual rhetoric of Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, and Norman Rockwell. The claim is Hine, Lange, and Rockwell’s artwork is propaganda because it is posed, contrived, and emotionally manipulative. The three artists used their propaganda art to bring awareness to the plight of exploited children, impoverished migrant workers, and racial segregation. The thesis concludes that Hine, Lange, and Rockwell were advocates for social reform, and their art instigated change for various enclaves of the American populace. The initial chapter reviews the theoretical components of propaganda, visual rhetoric, and advocacy, and explains how these overlap to create a framework to examine the photographs of Hine and Lange, and the paintings of Rockwell. Subsequent chapters delve into the individual lives, motives, and art of the artists, placing each artist in an historical context. Selected pieces of art that are exemplary of both propaganda and advocacy are chosen for close reading.

Dorothea Redepenning, Geschichte der russischen und sowjetischen Musik, Band 2: Das 20. Jahrhundert. Zwei Teilbände, 836 Seiten, zahlreiche Notenbeispiele und Abb., Laaber (Laaber-Verlag) 2008, ISBN 978-3-89007-208-1 [Rezension]

Weiss, Stefan 17 August 2017 (has links)

Nilsson, Fredrik, Rydbrant, Klas January 2014 (has links)
In Sweden it is estimated that about 4 percent of the population have diabetes. The National Board of Health and Welfare recommends empowerment-based patient education in the treatment of diabetes type 2. The aim of this study was to describe the nurse's and the patient's experience of empowerment-based patient education to patients with diabetes type 2. The method is a literature review based on 10 scientific articles. Dorothea Orem’s general self-care theory was used as a theoretical framework. The result identifies three categories of experiences of empowerment-based patient education: "The new role of the relationship," "The experience of education" and "The need for resources". Conclusion: Empowerment-based patient education is a double-edged sword with both difficulties and opportunities for both nurses and patients in the care meeting.

The relationship between physical activity and qualityof life in COPD patients : A litterature review

Hampl, Vendela, Strandberg, Josefin January 2023 (has links)
Background COPD is a global public health issue, and the patients belong to a group that frequently seeks healthcare services. Dyspnea, anxiety, and/or depression are among the most common symptoms of COPD and can impact the quality of life. As the disease is chronic, the focus of care is on alleviating symptoms and preventing rapid progression. One of the more common nursing interventions for COPD is physical activity. As this is a self-care measure, it places certain demands on the patient as well as on the nurse's ability to promote these commitments and assist the patient with their expertise. Aim The aim of this study was to illustrate the relationship between excersise and quality of life in patients living with COPD. Method A systematic literature review based on the findings of 10 articles using a quantitative approach, whose content was analyzed and quality-reviewed. The results of the articles were compared, resulting in three overarching themes upon which the findings were based. Results In the results, three distinctive main themes emerged, regarding physical activity and its correlation with the quality of life in individuals with COPD. These three highlighted the impact of different forms of exercise on the quality of life, the significance of exercise intensity for the quality of life, and the positive side effects that exercise entailed and their connection to higher quality of life. Conclusions The conclusion of the literature review indicates that physical activity has a positive correlation with the quality of life in COPD patients. This association is independent of intensity and training method. The study emphasizes that promoting physical activity can improve not only the quality of life, but also other COPD-related symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and dyspnea. COPD is still considered a low-status disease, and patients experience stigma and shame. This emphasizes the need for continuous education for nurses and healthcare professionals to provide person-centered care and support patients toward a more active lifestyle, which can alleviate negative consequences in their daily lives.

Hermann und Dorothea and Luise : a comparative analysis

Kroeck, Bettie Louise 01 January 1933 (has links) (PDF)
Critics have not yet come to an agreement as to how much Goethe took from Voss's Luise for his Hermann und Dorothea: and how much credit we are justified in giving to Goethe's originality for his production. When Hermann und Dorothea first appeared, it was scorned by a great many readers as being a rather poor imitation of Luise. Now it is undoubtedly regarded as the better productions of the two. However many critics still consider it to be an imitation of Voss, although perhaps an improvement. Certainly, Goethe was inspired to the use of the hexameter, in the telling of his story, by Voss's work; there is not a doubt of this, as Goethe himself admits the fact without hesitancy. But I feel sure that in making an honest comparison of the two poems one can easily see that the younger poet is entirely original except, as I have said, in the matter of the verse-form. Goethe's poem contains many subtleties of character and really wonderful philosophies of life, that when one studies the two poems for comparative purposes, Luise becomes weak and colorless besides the masterpiece, Hermann und Dorothea.

Dorothea Lange in Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait of Utah's Great Depression

Swensen, James R. 01 January 2000 (has links) (PDF)
In his 1978 biography of Dorothea Lange, Milton Meltzer appraised Lange's 1936 photography in Utah as nothing more than mundane work done for the benefit of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and not for her own benefit as a photographer. Yet, her work in Utah encapsulates the aspirations, goals, and styles of Lange, and gives insight into her vision as a photographer and representative of the New Deal. Through carefully composed photographs, Lange shows the hardships and hope of life in Utah during the Great Depression. This thesis investigates Lange's photographs in order to gain a greater understanding of the FSA in Utah during the Great Depression, the nature of FSA photography, and her work in general. To accomplish these tasks, it will be necessary to investigate the photographs and their captions, the work of other FSA photographers, local histories, contemporary sources, and FSA scholarship. Using these sources, this thesis attempts to identify reasons why Lange took the photographs she did. Using the historical context under which Lange's photographs were made also allows for an examination of Lange's use of visual editing, or, in other words, her artistic manipulation in creating her own vision of the areas she was assigned to photograph. The manner in which she photographed the small rural towns of Consumers, Widtsoe, and Escalante, was not completely indicative of the towns' true nature, or the towns' reality. Rather, the portraits Lange created were personal visions that supported the FSA and her own beliefs and altruistic ideology.

Growing Conflict: Agriculture, Innovation, and Immigration in San Luis Obispo County, 1837–1937

Jenzen, Douglas P 01 March 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The history of San Luis Obispo and its surrounding areas is complex. Agriculture, innovation, and immigration have all contributed to the formation of the region. The Spanish, Mexican, and early American periods established the framework successive waves of immigrants had to live within. Native Americans and immigrants from China, Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, the Philippines, and other regions of the United States have all toiled in the fields and contributed to America’s tables at various points throughout county history. Many contingencies determined the treatment of successive waves of immigrants. Growth and development are taking place at exponential rates on the very land that witnessed the first local agriculture and the conflicts surrounding the burgeoning industry.
