Världsarvens konsumtion och attraktion : En undersökning av förmedling och mottagande av tre världsarvsstäder

Brun, Emmelie January 2019 (has links)
In this thesis I examine three cities that have been nominated as world heritage sites by UNESCO, and how these cities are understood and mediated by visitors. One of the research questions was also to see how these places has been affected by the nomination. I have visited Visby, Dubrovnik and Toruń to do this research. I wanted to find out why so many people choose to visit these places and how much the world heritage nomination was part of the decision to visit. This is done by examining how these cities are mediated by travel literature, tourist information in the form of brochures and other information, as well as interviews. These interviews were conducted both with tourists at these sites, but also with people that work with tourism or cultural heritage in some form. The method used besides interviews has been thick description as it is formulated by Clifford Geertz to describe and make sense of these places and to see how you would experience these places as a tourist. The researchers that has figured as a theoretical background include John Urry and Andrew Walsh. Urry describes how the tourist uses different gazes to see the world in different ways, and Walsh describes how a place that seems to be irreplaceable might in fact not be so irreplaceable, which applies on the examined places in this thesis. Josefina Syssner and Karim van Knippenberg together with Linde Egberts lays a groundwork for the understanding of different sorts of tourists, and what tools can be used is place marketing of these cities. In agreement with previous research I conclude that the primary attraction of these sites for the tourists is not their status as world heritage sites, and the reason that these sites are troubled with mass tourism lies elsewhere. The place itself is replaceable for the majority of the tourists, but not for the material heritage. A better dialogue is needed between the tourism and heritage sector, as well as local residents and politicians, to be able to counteract the negative effects of mass tourism, that is shown to wear on the material culture. The mediation needs to include a more widespread picture of the complex issues that concerns these heritage sites. In todays globalized and mobile world, the idea of world heritage sites becomes problematic, as this work has shown. This thesis is a two years master’s thesis in Museum and cultural heritage.

Les architectes au service de la République de Raguse de 1667 à 1808 et leurs impacts sur l’art de bâtir de la ville de Dubrovnik / Architects at the service of the Republic of Ragusa from 1667 to 1808 and their impact on the art of building in the city of Dubrovnik

Ruso, Anita 15 December 2016 (has links)
After the earthquake that struck the region of the Republic of Ragusa in 1667, Dubrovnik (formerly Ragusa), its main city, experienced a strong architectural immigration of Roman origins (and in only one case, Venetian). After attempting to trace the history of artistic and diplomatic relations between the Republic of Ragusa and the authorities of different states of the Apennine peninsula which reached their peak after the great earthquake of 1667, this study examines the role of foreign architects in the context of public administration of the Republic of Ragusa and the influence they had on the architecture of the city. Although the architects did not have their formal office within public institutions, the usual behavior of the Senate of the Republic in the process of recruitment of foreign architects shows us that same patterns of cooperation between architects and sponsor were repeated over the centuries. Therefore, we use them as strong evidences that show a stable and traditional system, which remained unchanged until the end of the Republic in 1808. In this research, the focus was on the representative architecture of the city of Ragusa and on all building sites which were under the control of the Republic. Finally, artistic migrations between Rome and Ragusa in the second half of seicento and during settecento were compared with the same phenomenon that took place between the city of Valletta in Malta and Rome and between the region Val di Noto in Sicily and Rome.

Izolovaný Dubrovník: Varianty řešení dopravního propojení chorvatského území rozděleného oblastí Neumu / Isolated Dubrovnik: Possible transport connection solutions of the Croatian territory divided by the Neum area

Vedral, Martin January 2015 (has links)
The Master thesis deals with potential solutions of transport connection between two parts of the Croatian territory separated by Neum of Bosna and Hercegovina. The territorial separation became rather problematic after the Croatian entry into the European Union on July 1, 2013. Much stricter border controls between Croatia and Bosnia have considerably complicated traveling to the two parts of Croatia. In its historical section, the study explains why and when the unusual separation originated. Further, it deals with possible solutions that arise and assesses their economic and ecological demands while taking international law aspects into consideration. In the analytical part, the thesis aims to analyse the interests and goals of each player that directly influences the problem or the problem indirectly affects them. The players are the European Union, both Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, local authorities, and Croatian political parties. The author concludes that the Peljesac Bridge, going from the Croatian territory to the Peljesac Peninsula, is the most likely solution out of all discussed options. To finish the bridge successfully, however, Croatia needs to get considerable amount of money from the EU as it does not have sufficient means to finance such a technology and construction...

Recognition Denied: An Examination of UK and US Foreign Policy towards the Republic of Croatia

Ljubic, Maria Christina 02 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the development of decision making taken by two countries, the United Kingdom and the United States, in response to Croatia’s declaration of independence from Yugoslavia. The focus is on the recognition process and the reasoning and rationale used by the government officials and diplomats of the United Kingdom and United States to arrive at their policy decisions and opinions. The concentration is mainly on events from the early 1990s until mid 1992. Topics explored include matters such the politics behind non-recognition, democratic social norms, respect for human rights and Western national interests. The thesis first hypothesizes, then analyses, which International Relations theory, that is, realism or constructivism, possesses the best capacity explain why these nations initially withheld their recognition of Croatia’s independence before moving to accept the Republic of Croatia as an independent state. The role of the International Relations theories is to offer an interpretation and understanding of these events and decisions. Subsequently, they are judged on their ability to do so. The thesis finds that via the insight of scholars, analysts and theoretical perspectives that both the John Major government of the UK and the George H.W. Bush Administration of the United States behaved mostly according to realist principles, with some instances of constructivist manner. / Graduate / 0615 / 1616 / 0335 / cljubic9@gmail.com
