Understanding Ancient Maya Economic Variability: Lithic Technological Organization in the Mopan Valley, Belize

January 2017 (has links)
acase@tulane.edu / Given that the economy involves all actors in a society, anthropological archaeology studies of the economy tend to be reductionist in their modelling, particularly of the ancient Maya, as by failing to examine certain segments of the ancient economy the full range of questions and complexities concerning economic interactions cannot be addressed. While much of the current framework for studying the past economy is due to the fragmentary nature of the archaeological record, traditional approaches tend to emphasize top-down studies, focusing on elites and their use of the economy for obtaining and maintaining power, and bottom-up studies which focus on the economic independence of small-scale farmers and householders. Studies of the economy should take a middle ground as it should be seen as a system of multiple economies in which different goods circulated. This dissertation seeks to model the multiple ways economies articulated in the past focusing on utilitarian goods which circulated through different economies. The articulation of economies becomes apparent through studies of the extraction and production of raw materials as access to and exchange of such goods occurs at the intersection of various economies. This dissertation asks, what was the relative role of various actors in the management of raw materials for utilitarian resource production? Examining the access to materials for utilitarian goods highlights the variability in economic practices and the involvement of actors of varying socio-economic statuses in lowland Maya economies. This dissertation focuses on lithic production at a chert quarry and production area in the upper Belize River valley of western Belize during the Late to Terminal Classic Periods (A.D. 670-890). This dissertation finds that local residents managed resources to produce utilitarian tools, indicating economies were a source of integration with and insulation from regional political dynamics. These data suggest we should view lowland Maya economies as complex systems where individuals of different socio-economic statuses negotiated wealth and power. / 1 / Rachel A. Horowitz

Given, Borrowed, Bought, Stolen: Exchange and Economic Organization in Postclassic Sauce and its Hinterland in Veracruz, Mexico

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: This study analyzed archaeological residential inventories from the center of Sauce and its hinterlands to address the possible appearance of markets and the structure of exchange during the Middle Postclassic period (A.D. 1200-1350) in south-central Veracruz, Mexico. Economic development is rarely the result of a coherent strategy either on the part of managing or consuming elites or on the part of the average consumer. Instead, a combination of strategies and overlapping exchange systems provided the context, rather than any one explanation, for how commercial market exchange develops. Identifying the context is challenging because economies have multiple exchange mechanisms, which require clearly defined expectations that separate spatial and network (distributional) data. This separation is vital because different exchange mechanisms such as centralized redistribution versus central-place marketing produce similar spatial patterns. Recent innovations in identifying exchange mechanisms use network (distributional) instead of spatial expectations. Based on this new body of knowledge, new quantitative methods were developed to distinguish between exchange through social networks versus market exchange for individual items based on comparisons of household inventories, later combining this information with spatial and contextual analyses. First, a Bayesian-inspired Monte Carlo computer simulation was designed to identify exchange mechanisms, using all household items including cooking utensils, serving dishes, chipped stone tools, etc., from 65 residential units from Sauce and its hinterland. Next, the socioeconomic rank of households, GIS spatial analyses, and quality assessments of pottery and other items were used to evaluate social and political aspects of exchange and consumption. The results of this study indicated that most products were unrestricted in access, and spatial analyses showed they were acquired in a market near Sauce. Few restrictions on most of the polychromes, chipped stone, and assorted household items (e.g., spindle whorls) lend strong support to commoner household prominence in developing markets. However, there were exceptions. Dull Buff Polychrome was associated with the Sauce center; analyses showed that its access was restricted through social networks. "Cookie-cutter" style figurines and incense burners also showed restriction. Restricted items found in Sauce and wealthier residences indicate enduring political and social inequalities within market development. For Sauce, a combination of elite and commoner household interests was crucial in supporting the growth of commercial exchange rather than a top-down directive. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Anthropology 2011

La diaspora Wenzhou en France et ses relations avec la Chine / The Wenzhou diaspora in France and its relation with China

Li, Zhipeng 28 June 2017 (has links)
The Chinese diaspora has been growing since the second half of the nineteenth century. In France, the Chinese immigration from the region of the Wenzhou has intensified since the 1980s. This sub-group of the Chinese diaspora has since rapidly expanded its economic activities. The objective of this thesis is to study the economic, social and spatial organization of Wenzhou migrants in France, manly in the Paris region, and to analyze the economic and social relations that they maintain with China in general and with their region of origin in particular. The central hypothesis of the thesis is that the economic “model of Wenzhou” area, as identified and analyzed by the Chinese scholars, and the development of Chinese entrepreneurship in France are closely linked in particular through "Import"of this model in France. The results of our thesis reveal the existence of an original transnational economy connecting France and China, that was supported by the Wenzhou diaspora and that produced a form of "migratory transfer" in each of the two countries. More broadly, the thesis helps to show how the Chinese diaspora in France contributed to the economic development of China, but also how it benefitted from measures included in China's new policy initiated in the early 2000s to consolidate itself.

L’industrie lithique des populations blicquiennes (néolithique ancien, Belgique) : organisation des productions et réseaux de diffusion / Lithic industry of the blicquian populations (early neolithic, Belgium) : production’s organization and diffusion’s networks

Denis, Solène 18 December 2014 (has links)
In the North of France and Belgium, the Blicquy/Villeneuve-Saint-Germain culture marks the end of the Danube traditions (Early Neolithic Period). The eleven sites found in Belgium belong to the Blicquian features of this cultural entity. Two settlement areas, separated by 100 km, are highlighted (in Hainaut and in Hesbaye). An analysis of the technical and economical characteristics of the Blicquian lithic industry was performed in order to describe the socio-economic organization relating to the lithic production as well as the relationships between the different settlements areas of this culture. The study concluded that there were two distinct types of production. A group of knappers produced flakes and facetted tools in a domestic context. Another group of knappers, who had specific skills, produced blades which were found in each house. However, arguments converge to suggest that the latter moved from one house to the next and even from a site to another, suggesting some kind of specialization of the laminar production in the community or even among several communities. The circulation of Ghlin flint (probably originating from Hainaut) shows that some knappers moved between Hainaut and Hesbaye. The circulation of tertiary bartonian flint (originating from the Paris Basin) was following more diverse modalities. Some knappers may have moved from the Paris Basin to Hainaut, but it is certainly not the only way that Bartonian flint was introduced on the Blicquian sites. This study shows the intensity of the relations between villages, demonstrating the importance of exchanges for the socio-economical welfare of those agro-pastoral communities.

COOPERATIVISMO NOS PROCESSOS DE ORGANIZAÇÃO POLÍTICA E ECONÔMICA DOS TRABALHADORES NA LUTA CONTRA A EXPROPRIAÇÃO CAPITALISTA NO CAMPO: a resistência do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra no Maranhão / COOPERATIVE IN THE PROCESSES OF POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC ORGANIZATION OF THE WORKERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CAPITALIST EXPROPRIATION IN THE FIELD: the resistance of the Landless Rural Workers Movement in Maranhão

The historical background of the study is disclosed, presenting the cooperativism as a contradictory tool on the workers struggling process, to the extent that its determinants present two perspectives: one used in the free market idealistic proposals presenting a political and ideological dimension that meet capitalist interests, being currently updated in the processes of flexibilization work; the other, expresses an alternative of resistance and struggle of the workers, which might be an important tool in the context of social struggles, if it is consciously constituted. A historical recovery of cooperativism, is also carried out, as one of the models of agricultural cooperation organized by the MST since the 1980s, when there was an intense worsening of the agrarian question due to the advancement of capitalism in the countryside. The study considers the cooperativism as a major instrument of political and economic organization for farmers, even though in Maranhão this initiative has shown weakness in relation to the economic return to the cooperative members. The main limits pointed out by the leaders in the production sector of the movement, have been: technical and managerial difficulties, lack of production technologies, as well as little support given by the State through public policies that generally follow the logic of the current agricultural policy, allowing the landowner to be the major beneficiary of public funds. The study identifies that somehow, politically, the cooperativism has contributed to the process of resistance within the MST, provided that it has led to the formation of new concepts about the organization of production and labor relations, even though this strategy is posed in a contradictory way.

Gestion des conflits dans le deuil au prisme des négociations, transactions sociales et compromis : le cas du deuil d'un roturier chez les Bamiléké de l'Ouest Cameroun / Conflit managment in the mourning process through negociation, social transaction and compromises : the case of commoners among the Bamiléké of West Cameroon

Matemnago Tonle, Véronique 11 December 2017 (has links)
The Bamileke society of Western Cameroon, marked by a hierarchical social structure based on customary references in the course of evolution, is crossed by conflicts that can be identified in social relations. These tensions crystallize on the occasion of ceremonies such as the mourning of a commoner, field of the observations of this thesis. The sociological and ethnological analysis of these conflicts and the modalities of their practical management, with a view to the unfolding of mourning ceremonies in its entirety, mobilizing the theoretical tools of negotiation and social transactions in the permanent elaboration of compromises, what this work analyses throughout the grieving process. The empirical sources and methods crossed with the theoretical references show that, relatives of the deceased, in terms of sets of actors and in relation to different frame of constraints (customary, socio-economic, temporal...) organize themselves to manage conflicts through negotiation or transactions dynamics that always lead to relative and temporary compromises. At first marked by the time of mourning, these compromises participate more widely in the local recomposition of social relations and the relationship between tradition and modernity in Bamileke society.
