The psychological experiences of learners affected by HIV/AIDS pandemic / Nomalizo Constance MbeleMbele, Nomalizo Constance January 2005 (has links)
This study focuses on investigating the psychological needs of orphans affected by HIV/AIDS and how these learners can be supported in order to cope effectively with the challenges posed by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The study needed to understand the psychological well being of learners affected or orphaned by HIV/AIDS, their general performance at school, the nature and extent of social support they get from their families, communities and societies and their physical well being. Suggestions for an ecosystemic theoretical framework to be infused in all psycho-social support programmes geared to strengthen the psycho-social well-being of AIDS orphans were made.
Orphans are affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic emotionally, physically, spiritually and socially. Affected learners have fewer opportunities for schooling and education, may suffer from malnutrition. They are themselves often highly vulnerable to HIV infection and are at higher risk of developing psychological problems. In this study, a case study design was followed. Interviews were conducted with a sample of participants including orphaned learners living in a child-headed household, class-educator, an aunt and a health worker in Soweto. The researcher recruited participants by means of snowball sampling.
Results revealed that learners orphaned by HIV/AIDS suffer emotional trauma and grief, illness and stress. They have scholastic problems, suffer stigmatization and discrimination, miss out on educational opportunities and experience poverty. This is an indication of a need for social support. It is for this reason that an ecosystemic support programme which schools can adopt and adapt in order to develop the psychological and social resilience of learners affected and orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic is proposed. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2006.

The research for local medium enterprise growth strategy-rubber processing industiesWu, Chaw-yee 26 August 2005 (has links)
Local medium enterprises used to make economic miracles for Taiwan. However,in the wake of the changes in the macro environment, the rapid development of technology, changes in people¡¦s needs, increasing awareness of job safety and environmental protection, changes in the structure of workplace, capital and human resources moving to China as a result of rising mainland China, and recent rising prices of materials, local medium enterprises have been badly shattered, and their survival space has been squeezed. Rubber processing industries are in especially dire situations because they are labor-intensive and operate in inferior working conditions. So this research was designed to investigate how medium and small rubber processing industries, operating under such hostile business environment, can make good use of resources, overcome unfavorable environmental factors so as to energize business and continue business growth.
Through literature investigation, this study used Advantages in Business Competition authored by professor Fang Chih-Min as the main research framework. At the same time, in combination with the review of other literature, through a process of affective learning, this study summarized, compiled and put forth a contention that a business must have advantages lying in ¡§ability to use resources effectively,¡¨¡§ability to achieve internal growth,¡¨ and ¡§ability to achieve external growth¡¨ before it can grow. The study inferred a topic from this contention. Then research was conducted based on case study approach. It was expected to understand, from this
topic, what conditions would happen to the case and how to solve them. The results would be contrasted with theory, hoping to investigate and find out what would play a
critical role in affecting the growth of a business. Then through practical verification, this study summarized, compiled, and proposed conclusions and suggestions.
Through the research of this study, it was initially found that the essence of management would not change because of the size of a business and that how to conduct optimal use of limited resources to construct competition edge which is not related to size plays a vital role of the growth of small businesses. Moreover, in addition to strengthening their mainstream business, small businesses must also plan to enter businesses that can grow and profit tremendously so as to speed up their growth. As to suggestions offered to the case companies, in addition to enhancing their internal operation and management, they should also make good use of external resources to optimize the performance of resources, which would be the key to their growth.

The balanced scorecard as performance measurement and personal development tool in a steel organisation / André van Staden.Van Staden, André January 2009 (has links)
The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is a strategic management tool that provides the manager with a clear and concise picture of the business's health and progress in reaching the goals of the business (Norton & Kaplan, 1992: 71-79). The BSC is a set of financial and non-financial measures relating to a company's critical success factors. Of late the BSC was also used as a personal development tool – measuring the individual's performance towards set personal growth targets. The BSC process has been part of ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works for many years. This process can add great value to a company if managed effectively- the question is thus: is the BSC effectively implemented in ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works? It was decided to conduct a study to determine the status of the BSC with one main objective and two secondary objectives, namely to –
• establish whether ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works is effectively using the
BSC tool as a performance measurement and a personal development tool (main objective);
• determine if there is a difference between the effective implementation of the
BSC as a performance management and personal development tool within the different business units within ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works. These units are
Iron Making, Steel Making, Rolling, Engineering and Staff (Secondary objective 1): and
• determine if there is a difference between the effective implementation of the
BSC as a performance management and personal development tool between different role gradings (these roles are defined as E, F and G roles) in ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works (Secondary objective 2). An empirical study was conducted in ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works. A questionnaire was used as the measuring instrument and was issued via the HR Department to a target group of 724 employees. The questionnaires consisted of 25 questions divided into 2 sections to test both the effectiveness of the BSC as a performance management tool and a personal development tool. To analyse the data, descriptive statistics and frequency distributions were used and calculated in Microsoft PHStat. From these results the following conclusions were drawn.
• The BSC process is well entrenched in ArcelorMittal, Vanderbijlpark Works, but lacks overall effectiveness;
• The BSC does encourage people to self-develop, but development plans are lacking, not enough time for training is given and managers must show a real intent to develop their people. From the study and the conclusions drawn, the following recommendations were made.
• Address the issue of mistrust between the employees and their supervisory management.
• Managers should make allowance for individuals to make mistakes.
• Encourage innovation in the organisation.
• More effort should be applied to translate the company strategic objectives into workable (and measurable) KPI 's at the lower levels of the organisation.
• ArcelorMittal should make a concerned effort to allow more time for training and self-development during normal working hours.
• Revisit all KPI's for weight allocation. All the departments and all the levels in the
organisation see this as a drawback of the BSC system.
• Test the applicability of the KPis. Ensure that the KPis on the BSC are clear and that these reflect the effort the company requires form the individual.
• Allow more participation of the individual during the compilation of the BSC (this will improve buy-in).
• The E-role level communicates very well downwards to the lower levels in the organisation. Take key learning aspects from this group, and skill the F-role and
G-role levels to the same extent. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2010.

Attack effectively first, plattityd eller maxim?von Schantz, Carl January 2021 (has links)
There are different ways to understand warfare. Some see it as an artform, some as a science. For hundreds of years writers and theorists have tried to explain war in terms of principles such as initiative, surprise, and simplicity. These principles are sometimes distilled into maxims that try to define the most meaningful, crucial rules of war. This essay examines naval writer Wayne P. Huhges’s maxim “attack effectively first”. The somewhat self-evident concept of attacking effectively first leading to naval victory is tested and discussed. Hughes has developed three factors that he sees as essential in achieving the maxim, firepower, scouting and command and control (C2). The factors are analyzed and applied to the Yom Kippur war to investigate their meaning and value. The results of the analysis show that the factors are necessary to attack effectively first. However more research is required to evaluate how other factors can contribute and if the maxim is relevant in other maritime warfare cases.

Previous issue date: 2014-04-15 / The present study aimed to functionally analyze the verbal behavior of a person
diagnosed with erectile dysfunction. The participant, male 37 years old and was
married. To control procedures were employed two experimental designs: the Multiple
Site elements and treatments. To assess the antecedents and consequences of erectile
dysfunction reports was used for functional assessment that included (1) indirect
observation through the interview process, (2) direct observation and (3) functional
analysis, through the design of multiple major conditions: attention, demand and
control. The condition has been subdivided into three other sub conditions: attentionexhortation,
attention-reprimand, and attention-stimulation. To intervene in the speeches
of erectile dysfunction participant opted for the use of an intervention program through
the design of alternate treatments of type ABCDA followed by follow-up. The results
showed that reports of erectile dysfunction occurred more frequently in conditions of
attention-exhortation, attention-simulation and a demand. However the design of
alternate treatments, such reporting decreased gradually during the design phases and
reached zero frequency, as the appropriate lines increased their occurrences. The results
were discussed in terms of its implications.
alternados do tipo ABCDA seguido de follow-up.

Marintaktiska begränsningar i en gråzonskontext : en teorikonsumerande enkel fallstudie om de taktiskt begränsande faktorer IKFN-förordningen medför i en gråzonskonfliktRichard, Tragl January 2019 (has links)
There has always been a gray zone between peace and war, but never have nations tried to exploit this fact as much as today. Nations use the cognitive and legal spaces between peace and war to their advantage, with the purpose of achieving political and military goals. While this fact broadens the spectrum of war, it also challenges existing laws, regulating when and how militaries can use deadly force. The sea has been part of several recent gray zone conflicts, primarily involving Russia and China. The successes this type of warfare has achieved, makes it likely these nations will continue on the same path in the future. The purpose of this paper is to answer in what way Swedish law restricts the Swedish Navy tactically in a gray zone conflict. This is done through a case study involving a fictive case by the Swedish Defence Research Agency, creating a plausible gray zone scenario in Sweden and the Baltic Sea Region. Additions are made to the case to aim the focus on the maritime domain. Law regulating when the Swedish Navy can use force, is triangulated with part of Wayne P. Hughes’s theory, Six cornerstones. The part used to analyze the case is the sixth cornerstone, Attack effectively first, which emphasizes the importance of attacking first in order to achieve tactical success at sea. The analysis concludes that Swedish law puts the Swedish Navy in a severe tactical disadvantage, in a gray zone conflict, by restricting the use of force against non-military vessels. Because of that, Swedish ships will always be second to fire, preventing the possibility of attacking effectively first.
