Career Pathways for Elite Coaching: A Study of Australian Softball CoachesKathryn Horton Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the attributes and experiences that are perceived priorities for recruitment to become a high performance coach in the sport of Softball in Australia. The study was undertaken in the form of 10 cases of nationally identified coaches and administrators (men and women). Each participant was interviewed using semi-structured questions. The interpretive study gave an intensive description and analysis of coach experiences, attributes and qualifications that are perceived as highly desirable for coach selection by Softball Australia for high performance coaches. The basis for collection and analysis of information was via individual cognitive perspectives and perceptions (through interviews) and individual behaviours (through observation) with the intention to interpret and consider the presence of common themes. Findings may serve to identify, support and direct potential high performance coaches and contribute to the effectiveness of formal coaching education programs. The study focused on the sport of softball which has had a mixed profile over time, from one of almost obscurity to that of an Olympic sport. Australia has had an extremely impressive record internationally. It is currently ranked as the world’s best softball nation based on international performances by the Australian under 19 Men, Open Men, under 19 Women and Open Women’s Teams (SA 2008). Australia was the only country ranked in the top three in all age groups competing in World Championships. The importance of this study to softball coaches was to encapsulate the reality of how selectors make determination on performance coaching selections, and was this in line with what performance coaches perceive as the priorities. This may have two direct effects on the performance coach. Firstly, it may allow the coach to develop a career path that may best suit their qualities and attributes. Secondly, it may allow the coach to undertake further learning and development in the areas that the selectors perceive the coach does not meet the required standard of merit.

Fysisk aktivitet, stress och sömn hos gymnasieungdomar : Är det någon skillnad mellan elitidrottande och icke elitidrottande gymnasieungdomar?Ålkils, Sandra, Marass Hägg, Josephine January 2017 (has links)
Bakgrund Fysisk aktivitet har setts ge positiva hälsoeffekter i den vuxna populationen, så som ökad psykosocialt välmående och goda levnadsvanor. Detta är fortfarande lite beforskat gällande barn och ungdomar. Syftet var att undersöka skillnader avseende fysisk aktivitet, upplevd stress och antal sömntimmar mellan gymnasieungdomar som går elitidrottsutbildning och de som går en teoretisk utbildning. Studien undersöker även huruvida mängden fysisk aktivitet korrelerar med upplevd stress och sömn hos respektive grupp. Metod Studien hade en deskriptiv jämförande och korrelerande design. Totalt 130 elever i årskurs 3 på gymnasiet deltog varav 79 deltagare gick elitidrottsgymnasium. Data samlades in genom enkäter där eleverna fick självskatta nivå av stress och fysisk aktivitet samt bakgrundsfrågor om t.ex. antal sömntimmar och boendesituation. Resultat Skillnader sågs mellan grupperna avseende mängd fysisk aktivitet på hög och måttlig intensitet, samt total fysisk aktivitet under en vecka. Korrelationerna var nära noll och icke signifikanta mellan fysisk aktivitet och sömntimmar respektive upplevd stress. Slutsats Elitidrottande gymnasieungdomar är mer fysiskt aktiva än sina icke-elitidrottande klasskamrater och når upp till rekommendationerna för fysisk aktivitet. Fler studier behövs för att vidare bedöma psykosocial hälsa hos gymnasieungdomar, samt för att vidare undersöka samband mellan fysisk aktivitet, stress och sömn. / Background Physical activity has positive health benefits in the adult population on for example psychological well-being. This is still sparsely studied amongst the young population. The aim was to research differences in physical activity, stress and sleep between high school students in elite sports education versus those in a theoretical education. Also, to see if the amount of physical activity correlates with experienced stress and sleep. Method The study had a descriptive, comparative and correlating design. 130 students in last year of high school participated of which 79 was in elite sports education. Data was gathered from forms concerning self-perceived stress, physical activity and sleep. Results Differences were seen between the groups in the amount of physical activity on high and moderate intensity and the total amount of physical activity. The correlations were close to zero and non-significant between physical activity and hours of sleep as well as perceived stress. Conclusion The students in elite sports education have a higher level of physical activity and reaches the recommendations for physical activity. More studies is needed for further evaluation on the psychosocial well being in high school students and the correlations between physical activity, stress and sleep.

“You shut up and go along with it”: An interpretative phenomenological study of former professional footballers’ experiences of addictionBrownrigg, A., Burr, V., Bridger, A., Locke, Abigail 13 November 2017 (has links)
Yes / Research evidence suggests that professional players across a variety of sports may be at greater risk of developing addictions and other mental illnesses than the general population, both during and post-career. In this paper, we report findings from a larger project on the experiences of career transition in UK professional footballers that provide some insight into this. Using an Interpretative Phenomenological approach, four ex-professional footballers who were attending the Sporting Chance Clinic for help with problems concerning alcohol and gambling were interviewed in depth about their experiences. Focussing on issues the players perceived to be relevant to their addictions, the data were analysed thematically, drawing on Van Manen’s phenomenological method, and individual case histories were also produced. The analysis suggested that club culture was key to understanding the players’ difficulties; a harsh, unsupportive psychological environment combined with expectations of manliness resulted in a culture of silence in the face of personal difficulties. Relationships within the culture of pro-football were fraught with anxiety and distrust, leaving the players feeling unable and unwilling to disclose their problems and feeling used and unvalued by their managers. The lack of supportive relationships in their clubs also resulted in loneliness and social withdrawal for the participants. We conclude with a number of recommendations for the governing bodies in professional football, clubs and individual players.

An analysis on the development of elite sports policy in Taiwan : an institutional and Advocacy Coalition Framework perspectiveChen, Sheng-Hsiang January 2015 (has links)
Drawing upon a series of interviews with politicians, sports administrators, coaches, journalists and academics and with analysis based on the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF), this thesis examines elite sports development policy in Taiwan within a political context. It investigates the issues of whether or not sports development and policy-making reflect institutional features, and how sports policy has changed over time in Taiwan. It further explores the development systems of baseball, taekwondo and tennis, with a particular focus on similarities and differences between them at the elite level. Empirical data gathered from semi-structured interviews and documentary materials is analysed using an institutional approach together the ACF. The main findings suggest that, in essence, sports development and policy-making in Taiwan comply with institutional features and, during different periods from 1949 to the present day, have consistently been influenced by the political needs of the time. The analysis of the development systems of the three selected sports identified some major similarities. The government promotes them using a top-down approach and each sport relies heavily on the public funding. There sports have no national level facilities. Talent identification and development mainly occur in schools and are conducted through the competition systems. There is government financial support for elite athletes to participate in international events or for the governing bodies to host international events. The development systems for coaches share the same mechanisms. Finally, national athletes in each sport can enjoy sports science support from the government during squad training and international events. However, the case studies also reveal considerable differences. The governing bodies of taekwondo and tennis play a more dominant in elite development than that of baseball. Parents play a more significant role in the identification and development of tennis players than for the other sports. Only taekwondo national competitors train relatively frequently at the national training centre. The facilities for elite baseball players are more adequate than for the other sports. Elite baseball players enjoy the most international competition opportunities and taekwondo competitors the least. The existence of a professional baseball league and a highly professionalised international competition system for tennis serve to highlight the difference between the three sports in terms of the emergence of full-time athletes. In sum, this demonstrates quite clearly that there exists in Taiwan a single spine of sports development in general, but with variations.

De ideella elitidrottsföreningarna börjar till stor del bli kommersialiserade och gränsen mellan dem och vinstdrivande företag är på väg att suddas ut. De är dock fortfarande en ideell idrottsförening till formen som ska vara allmännyttig, demokratisk, ha folkrörelsekaraktär, vara jämlik och jämställd – de ska med andra ord genom sin huvudsakliga verksamhet bidra till samhället. Trots det tenderar elitidrottsföreningarna att ta ytterligare samhällsansvar genom att bedriva olika projekt och verksamheter med syfte att på olika sätt hjälpa till exempel utsatta grupper i samhället. Syftet med studien är att förstå vilken betydelse de sociala samhällsengagemangen har för ideella elitidrottsföreningar i förhållande till deras intressenter. Genom att utföra semistrukturerade intervjuer med representanter från fem olika ideella elitidrottsföreningar har vi skapat en förståelse kring deras sociala ansvarstagande för att därefter tolka vilken betydelse detta har för föreningarna och för vilka de arbetar med socialt ansvarstagande. Uppsatsen bidrar till att förstå att det finns nya strategier att använda sig av när det handlar om att bedriva en ideell elitidrottsförening. Vi önskar att uppsatsen kan bidra till att inspirera personer inom föreningsvärlden att våga gå nya vägar när det kommer till att leda och utveckla Sveriges idrottsföreningar. / The non-profit elite sports associations are beginning to be largely commercialized and the gap between them and private sector are on the verge of disappearing. However, they still are a non-profit sports association that should be public, democratic, have a people operating character and be equal - they should, in other words, through its main activity contribute to society. Although the elite sports unions tends to take more social responsibility by conducting various projects and activities aimed to help for example vulnerable groups in society. The aim of the paper is to understand what the social community engagements means to the non-profit elite sports association in relation to their stakeholders. By carrying out semi-structured interviews with representatives from five different non-profit elite sports associations, we have formed an understanding of their social responsibility and then interpret the meanings of this for the non-profit elite sports association and for whom they work with social responsibility. The paper helps to understand that there are new strategies to use when it comes to operating a non-profit sports association. We hope that the paper can help to inspire people in sports associations to take new paths when it comes to managing and developing sports associations in Sweden.

Fystränaren i svensk elitfotboll : Synen på kompetens och ledarskap / Strength and Conditioning Coaches in Swedish Elite Soccer : Views on Competence and LeadershipEkström, Carl January 2016 (has links)
Denna uppsats redovisar genom kvalitativ metod hur fystränare i Allsvenskan upplever sin bakgrund och kompetens, och deras syn på ledarskapet i den miljö de verkar i. I takt med att elitfotbollens organisation och prestationskraven inom densamma utvecklas ökar betydelsen av fysträning. Uppsatsen redogör för hur fystränaren som i egenskap av att utöva ett ledarskap når prestationsutveckling – i kontrast till att se fysträning ur strikt fysiologiska eller motsvarande perspektiv. Intervjuer med sex utvalda fystränare verksamma i herrallsvenskan visade vilken betydelse de gav olika delar av sin kompetens och bakgrund, samt hur viktig egen ledarutveckling över tid är. Fystränarna utövade ett situationsanpassat ledarskap med hänsyn till den komplexa miljö de verkade i, där bland annat spelare, lag, övriga ledare och aktivitet påverkade deras ledarbeteende. Deltagarna redogjorde även för deras specifika roll i den tränarstab de ingick i, som en funktion av till exempel övriga tränares ledarstilar och ansvarsområden. Genom att arbeta utifrån ett individfokus använde fystränarna ett relationsorienterat ledarskap som ett verktyg för att utveckla idrottsprestationen hos spelare och lag.
