The Mythology of the Small Community in Eight American and Canadian Short Story Cycles

Kealey, Josephene 03 May 2011 (has links)
Scholarship has firmly established that the short story cycle is well-suited to representations of community. This study considers eight North American examples of the genre: four by Canadian authors Stephen Leacock, Duncan Campbell Scott, George Elliott, and Alice Munro; and four by American authors Sarah Orne Jewett, Sherwood Anderson, John Cheever, and Joyce Carol Oates. My original idea was to discover whether there were significant differences between the Canadian and American cycles, but ultimately I became far more interested in the way that all of the cycles address community formation and disintegration. The focus of each cycle is a small community, whether a small town, a village, or a suburb. In all of the examples, the authors address the small community as the focus of anxiety, concern, criticism, and praise, with special attention to the way in which, despite its manifold failings, the small community continues to inspire longings for the ideal home and source of identity. The narrative feature that ultimately provided the critical framework for the study is the recurring presence of the metropolis in all of the eight cycles. The city, set on the horizons of these small communities, consistently provides a backdrop against which author and characters seem to measure and understand their lives. Always an influence (whether for good or bad), the city’s presence is constructed as the other against which the small community’s identity is formulated and understood. The relationship between small community and city led me to an investigation into the mythology of the small community, a mythology that sets the small community in opposition to the city, portraying the former as the keeper of virtue and the latter as the disseminator of vice. The cycles themselves, as I increasingly discovered, challenge the mythology by identifying how the small community depends, in large part, on the city for self-understanding. The small community, however, as an idea, and a mythic ideal, is never dismissed as obsolete or irrelevant.

This thesis deals with operations carried out on BM&F BOVESPA commonly called 'Day Trading', which are operations whose purchase (or sale) and settlement are carried out on the same day. This issue is relevant, especially for the small investor, because it allows the optimization of the result of their investment portfolio over time. The objective of this research is to present and test some techniques used by financial market traders in the 'Day Trading' modality. In conjunction with the verification of theories of technical analysis, the paper aims to reconcile such predictive techniques with theories of risk management and portfolio management, in this case more precisely the Modern Portfolio Theory of Markowitz, in order to test the efficiency of the combination between these theories in the Brazilian stock market, and whether there is a possibility of optimizing the results that an investor can achieve over time. To achieve this goal a quantitative research is performed using graphical analysis techniques based on theories widely known in the capital market, such as the Elliott Wave Principle and the Dow Theory. From the indicators of success obtained by these predictive techniques (through backtests), the present research explores aspects of market efficiency presented in the Efficient Market Hypothesis of Fama (1970). The main conclusions of this dissertation suggest that a passive buy and hold strategy of the Bovespa Index dominates respectively strategies based on Markowitz Theory and active day trading strategies based on technical analysis. The results make a contribution to the small investor through a better understanding of the possibilities that short-term operations can bring to their investment portfolios and confirms the view that the Brazilian stock market is efficient in its weak form.

Collective Memory and Performance: An Analysis of Two Adaptations of the Legend of Beatrice Cenci

Montague, Amanda 10 1900 (has links)
<p>This study focuses on two incarnations of the Cenci legend: Percy Bysshe Shelley’s 1819 verse drama <em>The Cenci</em> and George Elliott Clarke and James Rolfe’s 1998 chamber opera <em>Beatrice Chancy</em>. Shelley composed <em>The Cenci</em> after he discovered an Italian manuscript recounting the life of Beatrice Cenci who, after being raped by her father, plotted the murder of the debauched patriarch and was subsequently executed for parricide. Nearly two centuries later, Clarke and Rolfe created <em>Beatrice Chancy</em>, an Africadianized adaptation of the Cenci legend inspired by Shelley’s play. This study investigates they way in which multiple performance genres re-embody history in order to contest collective memory and reconfigure concepts of nationhood and citizenship. It examines the principles of nineteenth-century closet drama and the way in which Shelley's play questions systems of despotic, patriarchal power by raising issues of speech and silence, public and private. This is followed by a consideration of how Clarke and Rolfe's transcultural adaptation uncovers similar issues in Canadian history, where discourses of domestic abuse come to reflect public constructs of citizenship. Particularly this study examines how, through the immediacy of operatic performance and the powerful voice of the diva, <em>Beatrice Chancy</em> contests Canada’s systematic silencing of a violent history of slavery and oppression.</p> / Master of Arts (MA)

Werkzeugmaschinen für die Welt. Der NSW-Export des Werkzeugmaschinenkombinates Fritz Heckert/Karl-Marx-Stadt 1970-1989

Stark, Carsten 08 November 2016 (has links) (PDF)
As a consequence of the growing foreign indebtedness since the late 1960s, the export of the German Democratic Republik (GDR) into the western markets became a question of to be or not to be. One of the most competitive sector of industry, producing final industrial goods, was, beside printing machine industry, the east german machine tool industry. Researches about their exports are still missing until today. That means the present work closes a gap of research! Two things were decisive for a continuously sale of east german machine tools into the western markets: First the will of the GDR to deal wares against wares to save foreign currencies. The international competition of the east german machine tools was a precondition to be used as an exchange currency. Seconds political reasons. Furthermor it was possible to put the east german machine tool industry in its worldwide proper place. Beside the worldwide comparison it was possible to analyse the national marketparts of the GDRs machine tool industry. While views on the east german economy talk about a lack of competition in general, without looking at the specific problems of the respective industry branch the present work distinguishes between single reasons: First the shorter intervals of the economical crises since 1973 that caused damages especially in the civil metal processing. In 1982 the western markets nearly went in totally decline, what caused an aggravate prize policy an d the closing of the national markets by protctionism. Second technical an qualitative problems. Les plus grands facteurs premiers d’entiers consécutifs / The largest prime factors of consecutive integers

Wang, Zhiwei 23 March 2018 (has links)
In this thesis, we study the largest prime factors of consecutive integers. Denote by $P^+(n)$ (resp. $P^-(n)$) the largest (resp. the smallest) prime factors of the integer $n\geq 1$ with the convention $P^+(1)=1$ (resp. $P^-(1)=\infty$). In the first chapter, we consider the largest prime factors of consecutive integers in short intervals. We prove that there exists a positive proportion of integers $n$ for $n\in\, (x,\, x+y]$ with $y=x^{\theta}, \tfrac{7}{12}<\theta\leq 1$ such that $P^+(n)<P^+(n+1)$. A similar result holds for the condition $P^+(n)>P^+(n+1)$. In the second chapter, we consider the function $P_y^+(n)$, where $P_y^+(n)=\max\{p|n:\, p\leq y\}$ and $2\leq y\leq x$. We prove that there exists a positive proportion of integers $n$ such that $P_y^+(n)<P_y^+(n+1)$. In particular, the proportion of the pattern $P^+(n)<P^+(n+1)$ is larger than $0.1356$ by taking $y=x.$ The main tools are sieve methods and a well adapted system of weights. In the third chapter, we prove that the two patterns $P^+(n-1)>P^+(n)<P^+(n+1)$ and $P^+(n-1)<P^+(n)>P^+(n+1)$ occur for a positive proportion of integers $n$ respectively, by the well adapted system of weights that we have developed in the second chapter. With the same method, we derive a more general result for $k$ consecutive integers, $k\in \mathbb{Z}, k\geq 3$. In the fourth chapter, we study the largest prime factors of consecutive integers with one of which without small prime factor. Firstly we show that under the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture, the proportion of the pattern $P^+(p-1)<P^+(p+1)$ is larger than $0.1779$. Then, we prove that there exists a positive proportion of integers $n$ such that $P^+(n)<P^+(n+2), P^-(n)>x^{\beta}$ with $0<\beta<\frac{1}{3}$

A case for memory enhancement : ethical, social, legal, and policy implications for enhancing the memory

Muriithi, Paul Mutuanyingi January 2014 (has links)
The desire to enhance and make ourselves better is not a new one and it has continued to intrigue throughout the ages. Individuals have continued to seek ways to improve and enhance their well-being for example through nutrition, physical exercise, education and so on. Crucial to this improvement of their well-being is improving their ability to remember. Hence, people interested in improving their well-being, are often interested in memory as well. The rationale being that memory is crucial to our well-being. The desire to improve one’s memory then is almost certainly as old as the desire to improve one’s well-being. Traditionally, people have used different means in an attempt to enhance their memories: for example in learning through storytelling, studying, and apprenticeship. In remembering through practices like mnemonics, repetition, singing, and drumming. In retaining, storing and consolidating memories through nutrition and stimulants like coffee to help keep awake; and by external aids like notepads and computers. In forgetting through rituals and rites. Recent scientific advances in biotechnology, nanotechnology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and information technologies, present a wide variety of technologies to enhance many different aspects of human functioning. Thus, some commentators have identified human enhancement as central and one of the most fascinating subject in bioethics in the last two decades. Within, this period, most of the commentators have addressed the Ethical, Social, Legal and Policy (ESLP) issues in human enhancements as a whole as opposed to specific enhancements. However, this is problematic and recently various commentators have found this to be deficient and called for a contextualized case-by-case analysis to human enhancements for example genetic enhancement, moral enhancement, and in my case memory enhancement (ME). The rationale being that the reasons for accepting/rejecting a particular enhancement vary depending on the enhancement itself. Given this enormous variation, moral and legal generalizations about all enhancement processes and technologies are unwise and they should instead be evaluated individually. Taking this as a point of departure, this research will focus specifically on making a case for ME and in doing so assessing the ESLP implications arising from ME. My analysis will draw on the already existing literature for and against enhancement, especially in part two of this thesis; but it will be novel in providing a much more in-depth analysis of ME. From this perspective, I will contribute to the ME debate through two reviews that address the question how we enhance the memory, and through four original papers discussed in part three of this thesis, where I examine and evaluate critically specific ESLP issues that arise with the use of ME. In the conclusion, I will amalgamate all my contribution to the ME debate and suggest the future direction for the ME debate.
