An Evaluative Analysis of the Contribution of Key Sociological Theorists to the Development of a Sociology of Emotion

Thorp, Millard F. (Millard Franklin) 05 1900 (has links)
The problem of the investigation was to ascertain the contributions of various sociological theorists to a sociology of emotions. Emphasis was to be placed on the symbolic interactionist school. The method employed was that of a literature review, with an evaluative analysis of each of a number of writers as each contributed to a sociology of emotions. The study had the purpose of remedying the long-standing neglect of emotions by sociologists. This purpose was accomplished by indicating the distinctive contributions of each theorist and areas of convergence among theorists. The investigation was organized according to groups of theorists. Each theorist was examined for conceptions of human nature and of the relationship between the individual and society. Chapter I discussed the problem in general; the remaining chapters analyzed the theorists. Chapter II discussed the classical theorists Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Georg Simmel, and Talcott Parsons. Chapter III presented the views of the symbolic interactionists George Herbert Mead, Charles Cooley, Herbert Blumer, Hans Gerth and C. Wright Mills, and Erving Goffman. Chapter IV treated contemporary theorists: Arlie Hochschild, Theodore Kemper, Susan Shott, and Norman Denzin.

Se mobiliser en situation autoritaire : une comparaison des contestations théâtrales argentine et chilienne (1973-1990) / Mobilisation under an authoritarian regime : a comparison of theatrical protests in Argentina and Chile (1973-1990)

Arrigoni, Mathilde 08 November 2013 (has links)
In Argentina, the Proceso de Reorganización Nacional is soon challenged by the emergence of a mobilisation movement in 1981, Teatro Abierto, which will last until 1986. In Chile, under Pinochet's regime, many hubs of theatrical protest proliferate in Santiago, however, the theatrical profession does not succeed in creating unity or gaining visibility. This thesis questions the concepts of resistance and mobilisation, and endeavours to solve this initial paradox: why and how does a branch of the performing arts manage to mobilise itself in an authoritarian context which seems, at first glance, more closed than any other. Besides the historical and macro, meso, micro-sociological characteristics of the two professional groups under study, it appears that the nature of the repression (whether structural or individual) and its consequences are a crucial variable to understand the dynamics of political commitment. The results of the qualitative survey, carried out over a period of nine months, and including interviews, collection of life stories, participatory observation and research based on records, show that the repression at stake under the Proceso leads to a specific economy of affection among the members of Teatro Abierto; which explains in some respect the transition towards mobilisation. The artists undergo a double emotional transformation, in order to, on one hand, move from humiliation to indignation, and, on the other hand, rehabilitate – within the public place and thanks to the specificity of the theatrical mechanisms – the euphoric and playful emotions that were banned by the regime. On the long run, mobilisation enables the actors to rebuild their damaged self esteem, to increase their symbolic and political capital and to allow the audience to militate against the regime and live by proxy.

Känslouttryck i tingsrättens domar : Självklart exkluderat eller oundvikligt förekommande? / Emotional expressions in district court´s judgments : Obviously excluded or unavoidable?

Strömberg, Linnéa, Johansson, Daniela January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this paper was to study how the district court practices expression of emotions in the written judgments, regarding attempted murder and murder. In addition, the purpose was also to study how the district court presented the perpetrator and the act linked to emotional expressions, and whether there were any differences in the presentation of these. The study was conducted with qualitative content analysis as a method and the data material consisted of judgments from a district court. The results have shown that the district court mainly excludes emotional expressions in the written judgments and expressed factual representations, but that it does occur to some extent. The results have also shown that there have been differences in the district court's presentation of the perpetrator and the act. Our conclusions have, among other things, been that the district court to varying degrees deviated from its neutral position, where emotions in relation to the act were most prominent. The conclusions have been strengthened through the connection to the emotional sociological perspective and Garland’s theory regarding the function of punishment.

Young consumers’ emotions towards emerging e-banking technology : A multi-perspective approach

Abikari, Masoome January 2024 (has links)
Banks appear to be interested in enhancing their effectiveness and efficiency by developing e-banking technology, i.e., the provision of banking products and services through electronic channels. However, the successful implementation of e-banking technology depends on how consumers perceive such technology and how they are probably provoked to adopt it. Considering emerging e-banking technologies, knowledge of the salient influential factors affecting consumer adoption is crucial for banks. Studies have analysed these factors from different perspectives, such as attribute- and barrier-based perspectives. Attribute-based factors pertain to the perceived or expected characteristics of e-banking technology, whereas barrier-based factors refer to factors that can hinder or delay the adoption of e-banking technology. Despite the absence of consensus on these factors, there is a predominant focus on the functional aspects of this technology, often neglecting the emotional experience of consumers.  Consumers’ emotions in the e-banking context mainly refer to hedonic motivation, defined as positive emotions such as fun, pleasure, and enjoyment arising from the usage of e-banking technology. While examining hedonic motivation has provided valuable insights into the adoption of such technology, further studies are required to examine the relationship among consumers’ emotions, particularly negative ones arising from different kinds of appraisals. Accordingly, this thesis aims to examine the influence of consumers’ emotions towards emerging e-banking technology on their intention to adopt such technology, with a specific emphasis on negative emotions from attribute and barrier-based perspectives.  Applying Structural equation modelling (SEM), the empirical results draw attention to the influential role of different types of negative emotions in the adoption of emerging e-banking technology. From the attribute-based perspective, the empirical results demonstrate an association between loss emotions and consumers’ behavioural intention to adopt emerging e-banking technology, through effort expectancy and performance expectancy. From a barrier-based perspective, the results indicate that deterrence emotions can be positively associated with consumers’ perceived risk. This, in turn, influences their behavioural intention to adopt emerging e-banking technology. The results also reveal the influence of deterrence emotions on consumers’ perceived risk, even in the presence of positive emotions. These results suggest the importance of considering various categories of negative emotions when examining consumers’ intention to adopt emerging e-banking technology.

Shame on you! Cognitive mechanisms and neural correlates of shame

Pappaianni, Edoardo 13 February 2020 (has links)
Shame is a self-conscious emotion that characterizes the life of all individuals. It arises when a moral violation occurs and the person is judged negatively by others for a way of being that does not correspond to the standards of society. Although over the years it has been widely treated from a theoretical point of view, there are few attempts in the literature to approach it scientifically by psychologists and neuroscientists. Using an integrated approach, based on neuroimaging, behavioral and neuropsychological investigations, in this thesis we aimed to investigate what are the cognitive mechanisms through which shame operates and what are its neural bases. After an initial theoretical introduction in which a novel model of shame functioning is proposed, two behavioral studies are presented in which an innovative experimental paradigm of shame elicitation has been validated and tested. Subsequently, the single-case of a patient with rare bilateral amygdala damage has been described. Since this region is notoriously crucial for emotional aspects, we tested the possibility that an amygdala injury could also lead to deficits in perception and recognition of shame. Afterward, to investigate if shame had its own specific neural activation map, a meta-analysis on functional studies in the literature that investigated the neural bases of shame and guilt (another self-conscious emotion) has been carried out. Finally, given the heterogeneity of the paradigms included in the meta-analysis, we run an fMRI study using our novel paradigm in order to detect shame neural signal. In general, by combining different methodologies, this work allowed us to approach shame from different perspectives, from simple elicitation and behavioral measurement to its neural basis. This has added a piece of knowledge in the field of affective neuroscience regarding a moral emotion (i.e. shame) that is fundamental to individual well-being within our society.

Untersuchung von emotionalen Wirkungsmechanismen im Produktdesign

Roth, Mareike, Saiz, Oliver January 2016 (has links)

City Mood

Fabrizi, Luisa January 2014 (has links)
This research aims to make the first step in the direction of creating guidelines to use for building an instrument capable to collect information about citizens’ emotional reaction toward their city.Through the use of an existing mobile application meant to collect data about one’s own emotions I tried to evaluated the availability of people in sharing how they feel.Later on, based on the evaluations of this app, I created two subsequent analog prototypes that can be placed in urban spaces to collect people’s place related emotions. The devices have been used both inside the university and in open urban spaces in Malmö. Using the experiences made with these prototypes, concerning the availability of people in sharing their emotions about spaces, this thesis is used to develop guidelines and design opportunities for further development of interactive street furniture designed to collect place related emotions.
