Reduction of CO2 emissions via cross-sector integration of community and industrial energy systems

Li, Ruonan January 2023 (has links)
Integrating energy across different sectors is an efficient solution for improving energy systems to meet energy demands with low CO2 emissions. Such integration includes combining the supply and demand of heating, cooling, and electricity by implementing appropriate equipment, as well as combining the energy systems of civic and industrial sectors. This thesis develops various optimization approaches to identify the optimal design and operation of distributed energy systems and the integration of energy systems across commercial, industrial, and transportation sectors, which minimize CO2 emissions and costs of the systems. Available equipment of the energy systems includes combined cooling, heating, and power system, absorption chiller, solar thermal collector, photovoltaic, boiler, electric chiller, battery, ground source heat pump, and air source heat pump. This thesis provides the following contributions to this area. (1) Identify optimal structures of distributed energy systems under different electric grid CO2 footprints. The work implements representative periods when formulating the energy system, which reduces computation time. (2) Differentiate heating demands of entities in the integrated system at different temperature levels to ensure feasible heat transfer. It removes the simplified assumptions in existing studies on the integrated energy system that assume all heating demands are at a uniform temperature. (3) Optimize production rates of plants instead of assuming steady industrial production rates. The switchable production rates lead to a further reduction in CO2 emissions of the integrated system. (4) Identify the environmental and economic benefits of the integrated operation under different electric grid CO2 footprints. It presents that integrated operation reduces more CO2 emissions when the electric grid has higher CO2 footprints. (5) Identify the optimal relative sizes of entities in the integrated system that maximize the CO2 emissions reduction benefits brought by the integrated system. (6) Prove the integrated system has lower CO2 emissions than individual energy systems both under deterministic and stochastic scenarios. Overall, the work in this thesis contributes to developing energy systems and integrated energy systems with the lowest possible CO2 emissions under various scenarios. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / As the total population continues to increase worldwide, it is necessary to improve community energy systems to reduce CO2 emissions when meeting energy demands. An efficient solution is integrating energy systems across different sectors. This work explores novel structures of energy systems – integrated energy systems that combine the supply and demand of heating, cooling, and electricity in residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation sectors. The optimal energy system configurations, sizes of subsystems, production rates of plants, heat transfer and electricity transfer, as well as capacity and operation of the equipment, have been identified by developing optimization approaches that minimize CO2 emissions and costs of the integrated system. The optimal design and operation are found under both deterministic and stochastic scenarios and different grid electricity generation scenarios, which provide references for developing community energy systems with the lowest possible CO2 emissions under various scenarios.

Regulatory analysis of cases of bi-nacional hydroelectric plants implementation: historical survey and projections for the future.

Novoa Curihuentro, Sebastian Gonzalo 06 August 2015 (has links)
The existing binational hydroelectric projects have shown very good results when it comes to energy market integration, especially considering the way that countries deal with generation investments. Therefore, based on documentary research conducted to understand the evolution of the energy markets regulation particularly the way that the involved countries deal with the integration of the energy and power coming of the enterprises to their national energy markets , as well as the electrical regulation of such countries, this document intends to introduce regulatory alignments to guide the development of future binational hydroelectric projects. Some of the regulatory tools and arrangements presented as part of the models are pre-existing to this paper, and even some of them have been used on existing regulation of projects currently under development. However, an articulate way to use them will be presented, by creating models that can serve as general alignments to improve the accuracy of the efforts for the development of new binational hydroelectric projects. All this from the standpoint of the energy market designs theory and private interest theory, in order to facilitate the inclusion of private entrepreneurs in this kind of initiative.

The Energy Integration in South America: an analysis of preference formation in Brazil by bilateral agreements

Silva, Lilian da 16 September 2016 (has links)
Since the early 2000s, the South America regionalism lives a multidimensional trend, including new themes to focus the integration discussions, including energy. In this scenario, the aim of this research is to understand the preferences formation in Brazil for an energy integration agreement. Besides, were adopted as secondary objectives: (i) study the history of energy integration in South America, especially in regard to Brazil; (ii) understand the negotiation process that involves an agreement by formulating an ideal energy integration agreement and; (iii) recognize the benefits and difficulties involving the choice of an energy bilateral or multilateral agreement. In order to answer these questions were adopted the approach of Two-Level Games by Robert Putnam, because of its ability to relate the dynamics of internal politics with the foreign policy, allowing the analysis of the complex scenario of an energy integration agreement negotiations. From this research, it is clear that the length involving the energy integration process in South America is not the result only a political lack or a paymaster absence, but mainly the difficulty in coordinating a wide range of actors, interests, expectations and legal systems, in more than one sphere of negotiation. So, by particular needs, Brazil elects bilateral agreements, without abandoning, however, in parallel, discussions in multilateral forums.

An analysis of DC distribution systems

Ajitkumar, Rohit 05 April 2011 (has links)
The Master's Thesis research focuses on analyzing the possibilities of using Direct Current distribution systems to distribute power to end users. Considering the shift in load types in the past few decades and also a growing demand of distributed generation, DC distribution can potentially offer higher efficiencies and cost savings to utilities. The incorporation of DC distribution offers the opportunity to eliminate multiple conversion stages for devices which are powered using DC electricity. The integration of power sources such as photovoltaics and fuel cells, which produce DC power, offer further incentives to consider the use of DC systems. Using DC systems can help eliminate the conversion losses associated with rectifiers and inverters which would be part of the infrastructure if AC distribution was used. In the literature, the study of DC distribution has been limited to customized systems. The objective of this research is to analyze DC distribution when applied to systems based on standard IEEE test feeder systems. The IEEE 13 node test feeder and the IEEE 37 node test feeder will be used as the basis for the analysis. Issues such as associated costs, protection and integration of appliances will also be addressed.

In recent years, energy has been the object of economic and political bargains in South America. Étude et conception d'une pompe à chaleur intégrée dans le procédé d'épuration du biogaz / Study and design of a heat pump integrated in a biogas upgrading process

Keryakos, Elie 05 May 2017 (has links)
Europe's commitment to renewable energy leads to accelerate the biomethane development as a renewable energy. The work of this thesis is based on the Cryo Pur process which is essentially a cooling process that will allow the biogas cooling from ambient temperature to -120 °C. While cooling the biogas, water vapor, CO2 and pollutants must be separated to obtain liquefied biomethane and bio CO2. The objectives pursued are methodological and experimental. The method used is the energy integration associated with an exergy analysis of the process. The analysis integrates the cooling production and the heat production by the refrigeration units for the use in the methanisation process. The energy optimization starts from the exergy analysis and identifies the losses of the various stages of the process and integrates both the cooling production at different temperature levels and the heat production used in the digester. The heat requirement of the digester is around 50 to 55 °C for the thermophilic bacteria. For the biogas upgrading and the liquefaction of biomethane, the cooling requirements are from ambient temperature to -120 °C. In the Cryo Pur process, refrigeration is carried out at 4 different temperature levels: 2 °C, -40 °C, -78 °C and -120 °C. The heat pump is coupled to the various refrigeration systems by cooling a refrigerant at a temperature which is the objective of the overall optimization of the heat pump system. The heat pump cools the condensers of the 4 refrigeration systems and the heat recovered from the refrigeration systems is upgraded to 55 °C by the heat pump.In addition to this overall energy optimization, the thesis focuses on the frosting and defrosting of the water contained in the biogas. This operation consumes a lot of energy. An energy optimization work is carried out to minimize the energy consumption for the dehumidification of biogas from ambient temperature to -78 ° C. The representation of the frosting and defrosting cycles and the losses associated with the temperature of the metallic mass of the heat exchangers requires a dynamic modeling. The dynamic modeling will lead to design the heat exchangers. The ultimate aim is to achieve the highest possible exergy efficiency. Tests made it possible to validate the models of the heat exchangers and refrigeration systems. The optimization also integrates the choice of refrigerant mixtures.

Stochastic Optimization and Real-Time Scheduling in Cyber-Physical Systems

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: A principal goal of this dissertation is to study stochastic optimization and real-time scheduling in cyber-physical systems (CPSs) ranging from real-time wireless systems to energy systems to distributed control systems. Under this common theme, this dissertation can be broadly organized into three parts based on the system environments. The first part investigates stochastic optimization in real-time wireless systems, with the focus on the deadline-aware scheduling for real-time traffic. The optimal solution to such scheduling problems requires to explicitly taking into account the coupling in the deadline-aware transmissions and stochastic characteristics of the traffic, which involves a dynamic program that is traditionally known to be intractable or computationally expensive to implement. First, real-time scheduling with adaptive network coding over memoryless channels is studied, and a polynomial-time complexity algorithm is developed to characterize the optimal real-time scheduling. Then, real-time scheduling over Markovian channels is investigated, where channel conditions are time-varying and online channel learning is necessary, and the optimal scheduling policies in different traffic regimes are studied. The second part focuses on the stochastic optimization and real-time scheduling involved in energy systems. First, risk-aware scheduling and dispatch for plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) are studied, aiming to jointly optimize the EV charging cost and the risk of the load mismatch between the forecasted and the actual EV loads, due to the random driving activities of EVs. Then, the integration of wind generation at high penetration levels into bulk power grids is considered. Joint optimization of economic dispatch and interruptible load management is investigated using short-term wind farm generation forecast. The third part studies stochastic optimization in distributed control systems under different network environments. First, distributed spectrum access in cognitive radio networks is investigated by using pricing approach, where primary users (PUs) sell the temporarily unused spectrum and secondary users compete via random access for such spectrum opportunities. The optimal pricing strategy for PUs and the corresponding distributed implementation of spectrum access control are developed to maximize the PU's revenue. Then, a systematic study of the nonconvex utility-based power control problem is presented under the physical interference model in ad-hoc networks. Distributed power control schemes are devised to maximize the system utility, by leveraging the extended duality theory and simulated annealing. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Electrical Engineering 2012
