African American Women Middle Managers’ Stories of Stereotype Threat and Leadership Aspirations

Ashley, Rockell Chandler 01 January 2019 (has links)
Even with the rise of racial diversity in the workplace, African American women remain underrepresented in upper management and organizational leadership positions, making up only 1% of U.S. corporate officers. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry study was to explore the daily experiences of African American women middle managers in regard to stereotype threat and the effect of these experiences on their engagement with leadership aspirations. The narrative inquiry method was used to address this gap and answer the research question, through storytelling from African American women in middle-management positions. This study was framed by 2 key concepts that focus on minority group workplace experiences with stereotype threat and the implications of these experiences on minority group members for their engagement with leadership aspirations: Inzlicht and Kang’s concept of stereotype threat spillover and Major, Spencer, Schmader, Wolfe, and Crocker’s concept of psychological disengagement. The data-gathering process involved semistructured telephone interviews with 7 college-educated African American women, in U.S.-based organizations, in which participants told the story of their stereotype threat experiences in middle management roles. Two of the 5 key themes uncovered were impact of stereotype threat spillover and disengagement from leadership and career aspirations. The information gathered from the narrative study will help drive social change by bringing awareness to the issue and reducing threat experiences of disadvantaged groups across organizations.

Caractérisation et contrôle des fluctuations de pression en aval d'une marche montante : application au transport de fret ferroviaire / Characterization and control of pressure fluctuations downstream of a forward facing step flow : application to rail freight transport

Graziani, Anthony 22 March 2018 (has links)
The work presented in the framework of this doctoral thesis concerns the problem of the tarpaulins tearing off of semi-trailers conveyed by the motorways network. Indeed, the turbulent phenomena generated around such a convoy cause large pressure fluctuations on the walls, resulting in high amplitude movements leading to breakage over long periods of stress. This phenomenon can cause several types of incidents for the operator of the network (ignition by catenary contact, train delay, loss of goods,...), it is necessary to understand the physical phenomena involved and to define a flow control solution that take into account the rail industry constraints. To do this, an experimental and numerical study of the flow around a two-dimensional forward facing step configuration was carried out in order to characterize the influence of the different separated zones on the wall pressure fluctuations induced downstream of the step. For this purpose, a series of velocity field and wall pressure measurements were carried out in the Lamih wind tunnel. The experimental results could be compared with those obtained by a numerical approach under the same conditions. The flow analysis focused mainly on two points. The first concerns the dynamics of the recirculation zones interacting with the shear layer. A stochastic approach has been used, and has made it possible to highlight the dominant mechanisms at the origin of the phenomenon. The second point concerns the dynamical links between these mechanisms and the wall pressure fluctuations. A modal approach, based on an extended orthogonal decomposition, revealed the important contribution of the low frequencies in this case. Finally, a passive control solution (deflector) was tested and showed that the low frequency mechanisms suppression provide a wall pressure gain up to 36 % depending on configurations.

Teknologiska innovationer : attityder och värden ur ett konsumentperspektiv / Technological innovations : attitudes and values from a consumer perspective

Hofverberg, Johanna, Martinsson, Anders, Sandberg, Sara January 2020 (has links)
Background: A constant development of the physical fashion retail business has led to possibilities to develop a shopping experience for consumers to compete with the online marketplace. This has led to physical stores implementing technological innovations to enhance the consumer experience. Method: A qualitative study with 14 semi-structured interviews along with a thematic analysis being made to structure the collected data. The paper is delimited to only consumer facing technologies. Result and analysis: The results of the respondents’ answers are analysed from the previous research. The results show that the respondents’ self-evaluation of their technological knowledge affects their usage of technologies. Some of the respondents are also affected by social influences, both in a positive and negative way. The perceived security of a technology also affects respondents’ acceptance of the technology. Different kinds of value are experienced by the respondents, with independence, time saving, flexibility and pleasure being the four central themes. The respondents experience and prioritise these values differently, which also affects the motives behind using technological innovations. Discussion: The result is discussed from a fashion industry perspective, with fast and slow fashion being brought up as two major areas. Fast fashion stores can benefit from including technological innovations to increase the customers’ independence. High fashion brands with a strong focus on personal service might suffer from introducing such technologies, as it contributes to a loss of personal service. Conclusion: This paper contributes with a clear understanding of how consumers experience technological innovations and what drives them to become users. Suggestions for further research is presented and recommends a deeper study focusing on the lack of technological knowledge, how it affects the use of technological innovations in a retail environment and how it can be identified.

Technological Innovation in Inbound Tourism, allied or enemy of the sector professionals?

Figueroa Espinoza, Milagros Solange, Melo Escobar, Maribel Emma 12 December 2019 (has links)
Abstrac: Technological advances facilitate the accessibility of travel services worldwide, the user has the advantage of preparing their own itinerary from a mobile device, guided by the recommendations that finds out on the networks. The development of new tools, systems, and mobile applications facilitate the tourist and hotel offer, make the distribution channels of their services reach more directly to their partners or final customer, resulting in better prices and prompt reply. Moreover, these technological advances generate susceptibility in professional development who faces new challenges and respond to the new demands. The travel agent must have the technical knowledge and should accelerate the response to customers with attractive and innovative proposals. Additionally, the traveler prefers the use of technology instead of needing the service of a travel agent. This behavior is repeated in the acquisition of hotel and air tickets since the booking is offered through virtual platforms and the traveler connects directly with them instead of needing the advice of a travel agent. The technology affects the pace in the markets and the technological knowledge is highly needed on the qualified professionals. / Trabajo de suficiencia profesional

Investigating the Role of Student Ownership in the Design of Student-facing Learning Analytics Dashboards (SFLADs) in Relation to Student Perceptions of SFLADs

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: Learning analytics application is evolving into a student-facing solution. Student-facing learning analytics dashboards (SFLADs), as one popular application, occupies a pivotal position in online learning. However, the application of SFLADs faces challenges due to teacher-centered and researcher-centered approaches. The majority of SFLADs report student learning data to teachers, administrators, and researchers without direct student involvement in the design of SFLADs. The primary design criteria of SFLADs is developing interactive and user-friendly interfaces or sophisticated algorithms that analyze the collected data about students’ learning activities in various online environments. However, if students are not using these tools, then analytics about students are not useful. In response to this challenge, this study focuses on investigating student perceptions regarding the design of SFLADs aimed at providing ownership over learning. The study adopts an approach to design-based research (DBR; Barab, 2014) called the Integrative Learning Design Framework (ILDF; Bannan-Ritland, 2003). The theoretical conjectures and the definition of student ownership are both framed by Self-determination theory (SDT), including four concepts of academic motivation. There are two parts of the design in this study, including prototypes design and intervention design. They are guided by a general theory-based inference which is student ownership will improve student perceptions of learning in an autonomy-supportive SFLAD context. A semi-structured interview is used to gather student perceptions regarding the design of SFLADs aimed at providing ownership over learning. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Educational Psychology 2019

Sustainable Supply Chain Management through the integration of IoT: Road Transportation

Al-Majidi, Samsul Alam January 2022 (has links)
Traditional transport companies usually focus on achieving economies of scale in supply chain management. At the same time, the managers of transport companies aiming to achieve sustainability often do not consider the barriers needed to overcome to achieve a sustainable supply chain. However, due to the increasing demand for sustainable products and business methods, sustainable supply chain management increasingly plays a crucial role in changing and diverting the focus on environmental, social and economic impact. Transport companies around the globe are increasingly aiming to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate biodiversity loss. The sustainability issues with transport in supply chain management have been a critical field of research for decades, and with the integration of technology, new ways of achieving sustainability are possible. This thesis analyses a phenomenon using multiple cases to investigate the barriers transport companies face to adopting IoT. Also, it deals with how communication service providers might be able to offer solutions to the barriers presented in this thesis.  A qualitative method has been used to approach the research topic. The findings will represent the ways of achieving a more efficient and sustainable supply chain, particularly in the transport sector. Interviews were conducted with multiple industry experts. The study aims to identify the barriers to adopting IoT, which can create a sustainable supply chain for transport companies. The results emphasise the barriers transport companies have to deal with internally and externally. Internally a company might struggle to strategise an infrastructural investment, train the existing workforce, and collaborate knowledge share among different departments. Externally, transport companies or communication service providers (CSP) will face limited resources, stakeholders' investment in the IoT ecosystem, demand for IoT and sustainable supply chain, privacy issues, compatibility issues and lack of skilled labour.
