Barajas-Garrido, Gerardo 26 January 2012 (has links)
My research deals with fantasy and the fantastic as genres, as well as with their subgenres. I propose a new genology for fantasy and fantastic literature and their subgenres in which they are part of a continuum, with fantasy standing on one end and mimetic literature standing on the other, the fantastic being their middle ground. Within this continuum, the subgenres – which I call fantasy marvel-fiction and fantastic marvel-fiction, fantasy science-fiction and fantastic science-fiction, fantasy surrealism and fantastic surrealism – are distinguished among themselves according to two axes, namely: a) the inner coherence or incoherence of the world the text presents – their being subjected or not to the laws of that world –; b) the nature, and the appropriate explanation – marvelous or scientific –, of the phenomenon that breaks the natural laws of the reader’s known real world. This relationship between reality and fantasy has been essential to my investigation. More specifically, what I have named “the scientific urban gaze” of reality has been the touch-stone to establish what is fantasy and what is not and to create the consequent genology. The genology I propose must therefore be pragmatic: the reader’s view of reality must be taken into account in the process of placing a text within this continuum and the proper genre and subgenre. Once the genology is fully explained, I compare it to the work of some of the most prominent critics on the field of fantasy and the fantastic in order to see similitudes and differences between their research and mine. For the validity of my genology to be demonstrated, I apply it in the analysis of some Mexican narrative works and show how the genre and subgenre of a text – in interaction with the text’s archetypes and narrative components – can be an effective means to convey ideology or worldview. The genological approach, therefore, integrated with an archetypal and a narratological one, constitutes an efficient tool for a holistic semiotic analysis. Notwithstanding that in my thesis I apply it to literary works, it can also be applied to cinema and theatre.

A ciência e o insólito: o conto de literatura fantástica no Ensino de Física / The science and the unusual: the tale of fantastic literature in physics teaching

Ramos, João Eduardo Fernandes 14 June 2012 (has links)
The current research deals with the relationship between Physics and Literature, represented by the fantastic tale, and its didactical possibilities, assuming, as defended by Zanetic (1989), that Physics it\'s also culture. We have chosen the short story, since it is one genre of fast reading, \"of only one sitting\", as proposed by Edgar Allan Poe (2000). Together with this, we have selected the fantastic literature, characterized by the hesitation between the real and the wonderful. This fantastic possess an educational function, as indicated by Rabkin (1977), since it creates in the mind a diametrical reversal and opens news and fantastic worlds. Given this outline, our goal is to think how the literature, especially the fantastic stories, can be used in physics classroom to address issues and concepts of physics. To this end, we have selected three tales from established writers: Murilo\'s Rubião \"O Pirotécnico Zacarias\" (1974), Jorge Luis Borges\' \"The Garden of Forking Paths\" (1944) and Edgar Allan Poe\'s \"The Thousand and Second Tale of Scheherazade\" (1845). The first history, by dealing with the indetermination between life and death, provides an analogy with the Schrödinger\'s cat paradox of Quantum Mechanics. The second story, it\'s a detective story that features and endless labyrinth, represented by a book, where all possibilities occur at the same time, like in a garden of forking paths. This idea dialogues with the multi-universes interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, proposed by the physicist Hugh Everett III. Finally, the third tale, presents a history in which the science is described differently. The story shows how science and technology is seen through the eyes of those who do not know the science, showing whit this, that science is unlikely to certain contexts. As a methodology, we have conducted an initial study on reading in physics classroom that was accompanied by a study on reading strategies, in which we proposed the reading as a research and as an analogy. In addition, we have conducted a literary study of the tales from Greimas\' semiotics. This study was used to interpret and identify the main elements of the tales. Thus, when we relate the fantastic with physics, we were able to observe that in physics, what is fantastic can became real. In this sense, this relationship invites us to reflect on our reality, a fact that is essential to Physics Teaching. Furthermore, we believe that the fantastic can be used in the classroom either as an analogy, or as an investigation, where the scientific concepts are to be questioned.

Utopias, ficções e realidades na metrópole pós-industrial / Utopias, fictions and realities in the post- industrial metropolis

Gonçalves, Ricardo Felipe 22 May 2014 (has links)
Unlike the explicit values and pragmatic motivations of architectural production , utopian proposals involve a more introspective and imaginary universe that subverts the reality in which they were manufactured in response to relevant feelings we have on the cities they inhabit, often connected to quite accurate spatial characteristics. These connections, though imaginary, contribute to the evolution of ideas that can brighten the paths of architectural practice. These utopias reverberate themselves over time and their heritage can be identified and assimilated within the critical process of discussion and design of architecture, either in a visually explicit or a conceptually subtle manner. The recognition of utopian architectures at the present time is a relevant approach, since the contemporary city is presented as a scenario of complex heterogeneous social relations, where different cultural values are juxtaposed in urban space, creating a multiplicity of expectations on it. This work will focus on the analysis of manifesto-projects: utopian, provocative and speculative proposals whose images communicate an axiological universe as an intrinsic reaction to its historical and urban context , working in the construction of the idea of the city\'s urban future or alternative realities . On the first part, this research aims to recognize the urban utopias conceived in modernity and dystopias revealed in the movie universe by analyzing their aesthetic, conceptual and methodological aspects that reflect the values that are worshiped, starting from the industrial metropolis, investigating new paradigms and concepts that contribute to the reflection of the architecture and the city. The second part of the work aims to investigate the continuity or rupture of these values in post modernity and also in contemporary designs, including the evolution of the theme of utopia linked to architectural practice in the post - industrial society.
