The role as a father in focus : A qualitative social psychological study of mens experiences of the role as a father

Blomstrand, Evelyn, Eklund, Ellen January 2018 (has links)
The Swedish society is characterized of an ongoing gender equal debate where the government through social policy measures is actively working on equating men and women. The men perceived that it took time to socialize in to the role as a father were the social environment, norms and also their own fathers role affected them when taking on the role as a father. The traditional gender roles are changing which results in transformed attitudes from the social environment where mainly the employers supporting approach was described to encourage the respondents to take out parental leave.

A clinical study was carried out involving two fathers and two mothers of children with brain paralysis from 1 to 5 years old. These parents were interviewed guided by an adaptation scale s standards (EDAO) and by a projective test which revealed that the parents had gone through a critical period after knowing about their child s diagnosis and nowadays are classified with Inefficient Adaptation. Two fathers and one mother were classified with Severe Inefficient Adaptation and one mother was classified with Moderate Inefficient Adaptation. It has been identified that those parents use primitive defense mechanisms when facing the suffering caused by their children s deficiency. It has been concluded that the parents internal resources have been preponderant to their adaptation and the brain paralysis of the children affected all the adaptation sectors of the parents.(AU) / Diante do sofrimento e das questões enfrentadas por pais e mães de crianças diagnosticadas com paralisia cerebral, o presente trabalho estudou aspectos psicodinâmicos e adaptativos.

January 2003 (has links)
Abstract: This research intends to analyze some aspects related to men's perceptions as fathers of mentally retarded children just like they understand it, to propose a new way of leading support and/or educative familiar groups, who can be able to increase participation of these fathers. Subjects are fifteen men, fathers of moderately mentally retarded children from a public institution. These parents were listened using an adapted questionnaire and Familiar Anamnesis by GRUNSPUN (1992). Author concludes that father-handicapped children attachment is a different kind of experience, and many aspects of this relation seems to variate on significative degree in social-economic status, religion and genre of affected son. This study suggests some ideas to lead mental deficiency family groups. / Mestre

Fathermen : predicaments in fatherhood, masculinity and the kinship lifecourse, Dominica, West Indies

Philogene Heron, Adom January 2017 (has links)
Fathermen is an ethnographic journey in the kinship lives of men on the island of Dominica, West Indies. It traces the various complexities, conundra and contradictions Dominican men encounter and create as they navigate relational life trajectories. These are termed kinship predicaments: moments in kin-lives that trouble hegemonic concepts of fatherhood and masculine personhood; that spark ambivalence between dominant ideals and lived experiences; that provoke quarrels between mothers' expectations and fathers' practices; and expose incongruities between established norms and emerging forms. Seeking to transcend the historical and contemporary circumscriptions that stereotype Caribbean fathers as absent studs or patriarchal authoritarians, this enquiry asks how Dominican men chart their own paths of paternal becoming. Developing an intuitive participatory methodology, referred to as the ethnography of relation, Fathermen commutes into the kin-worlds of Caribbean men, seeking to understand fatherhood through deep dialogue as it is built from the ground up. Organising its chapters around local idioms through which Dominicans frame kinship, Fathermen features discussions on: the romantic and conjugal tensions that precede/inform parenting; the ‘mystic' bodily affects that draw men into reproduction; the vexed norm of paternal provision; Caribbean fathers' emergent nurturant practices; the classed politics of paternal recognition; and, finally, men's ambivalent intergenerational experiences of becoming grandfathers. Fathermen argues that it often takes a lifetime to realise fatherhood, with many Dominican men unable to resolve its many paradoxes within their mortal spans. Whilst it contends that men are ‘tied' tighter into kin-life as they grow along their paternal journeys, ambivalences persist. Yet still, amidst angst and complexity, Fathermen is nonetheless an ethnography of love, dedication, familial vitality, creativity and humour.

Henn, Camila Guedes January 2007 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to investigate, through a qualitative approach, paternal involvement and paternal experience in the Down Syndrome (DS) context. More specifically, it aimed to understand the DS impact over this involvement and experience. Six parents of children with DS were interviewed, whose children were between 9 months and 3 years and 3 months. The results demonstrated that parents had been participating actively in children’s activities and caretaking, being responsible for several tasks, although the available time to be with them was restricted because of their jobs. In spite of the difficulties, the participants evaluated positively their paternal experiences. The importance of the developing policies that aid not only the fathers, but also mothers and remaining members of the family system, is discussed, with the intention of working better with the particularities of their lives, helping to provide a better life quality for these families.

Medeiros, Fernanda Borges de January 2012 (has links)
This study investigated the unique pathways toward fatherhood in the context of assisted reproduction, from pregnancy to the first year of the babies’ lives. A collective longitudinal case study was conducted. Participants were three men who had undergone, along with their wives, in vitro fertilization. The cause of their infertility was male or mixed. Fathers answered semi-structured interviews in three moments: a) third trimester of pregnancy; b) their babies’ third month of life; c) their babies’ first year of life. The unique pathways have been reported and analyzed based on the clinical report methodology. These three pathways were (re)constructed, with their unique challenges concerning elaboration and integration of fatherhood experience, as well as the researcher’s challenges. Loneliness could be felt in the reports of men who have experienced infertility and treatment. They said they cared more than were cared for. The importance of providing a space for listening to these men is emphasized, not only in a research situation, but also in the practice of mental health professionals who work in this context.

A paternidade em famílias urbanas: uma análise da participação do pai na creche-escola e nos cuidados com o filho / Fatherhood in urbans families: analyse the father's participated in the care center and in the care with his son

Karla da Costa Seabra 14 February 2007 (has links)
This study comes from the estimated thought that all human development and its aspects depend on other social being, that family is the first environment where the child begins socializing, and its practices are essential for the childs development. Its also thought that: the babies share universal characteristics, interactions are constituent of the development, the parenting investment is a species characteristic, and the shape that each one of these aspects assumes, is directly related to the socio cultural context. From this estimative were able to think about the changes of the social roles demanded by the occidental urban societys economic system, where the remunerated jobs for women are increasing at a good rate, leading the father to get more space towards the childs, including their engagement in the nursery school. The main aim of this study was to investigate the different aspects concerning the fathers engagement with their children, including their involvements on the nursery schools environment. Aiming to bring evidences that can contribute to this discussion, the sociocultural approach was considered. Three different studies with fathers and mothers of children from 0 to 5 years old participated on this empiricist research thesis; including interviews, applying the tool on Father Style and an analysis of the fathers participation on events and school related activities. The analysis of these data focuses the evaluation of both maternal and paternal levels of satisfaction about the fathers engagement with their children, besides identifying which aspects show higher or lower frequency about day care, including the schools role. With regards the nursery school some interesting results were found: there is a kind of tendency about the level of the fathers engagement. It seems to grow up when the children were younger and when the pedagogical aspects were not evaluated like relevant to them. The result found indicated that, even though theres a tendency of a fathers bigger enrollment on entertainment activities with their children, they show themselves more and more available to the involvement with the others childs daily activities, like the physical care and school participation. The fathers that participated on the study are overall satisfied with their fatherhood exercises, but they considered that the mothers, not only stimulate their participation, but also wish for a bigger enrollment of their part. At the end of this study were able to firm that, the participant families of this Brazilian portion on the city of Rio de Janeiro, tend to not to have the practice of the traditional fatherhood, however they still dont fully exercise the non-traditional fatherhood, exerting on its majority the fatherhood with changing manifestations.
