A continuum model for milled corn stover in a compression feed screwAbhishek Paul (13950015) 13 October 2022 (has links)
<p>Controllable continuous feeding of biomass feedstock in a biorefinery is critical to upscaling current ethanol conversion techniques to a commercial scale. Mechanical pretreatment of biomass feedstock performed using a compression feed screw (CFS) improves the ethanol yield but is subject to flowability issues, especially the plugging of biomass. The mechanical behavior, and hence, the flowability of biomass feedstock, is strongly affected by several factors, including preparation method, moisture content, physical composition, and particle size distribution. In addition, the current design of CFS is guided by limited experimentation and even fewer theoretical correlations. This thesis aims at developing computational methods to model the flow of densified feedstock in a CFS and experimental techniques to characterize the mechanical properties required for the model. We adopted a modified Drucker-Prager Cap constitutive (mDPC) law for milled corn stover (a widely used feedstock for bioethanol production) to model the material’s rate-independent bulk behavior in a CFS. The mDPC elastoplastic law captures the frictional shear and permanent volumetric changes in corn stover using a continuous porosity-dependent yield surface. The parameters of the mDPC model are calibrated using a unified set of single-ended die compaction and multiple shear failure tests. In addition, we quantified the changes in the mDPC parameters with moisture content up to the water-holding capacity of corn stover particles. A Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian Finite Element Method model developed for the CFS geometry predicts the deformation of the material using the calibrated mDPC parameters. We model the interaction between the material and the CFS surface using a Coulomb wall friction coefficient calibrated using the Janssen-Walker method for a punch and die system. A laboratory-scale compression feed screw is designed and fabricated to characterize the flow of dense granular materials in collaboration with undergraduate students in the School of Mechanical Engineering. FEM model predictions of feeding torque and mass flow rate are validated against the laboratory-scale feeder for microcrystalline cellulose Avicel PH-200 and milled corn stover. The model predictions agree with the experiments for Avicel PH-200 but have a higher error in the case of corn stover. Some physical effects, such as shear hardening and particle erosion observed in milled corn stover, are not captured using the current implementation of the mDPC model, which explains the different model accuracies for both materials. The continuum model is used to uncover material density distribution, torque, and pressure inside the CFS, otherwise challenging through experiments. The FEM model showed a significantly higher sensitivity of the feeder performance to two material properties, namely the hydrostatic yield stress and the wall friction coefficient. The characterized variation of material properties with moisture content and the effect of each material property on the feeder performance provide strategies to engineer the feedstock for better flowability. Further, the continuum model offers a method to study design changes before manufacturing the equipment. Finally, we propose the possibility of a reduced-order analytical model based on the critical material properties and the material deformation mechanism demonstrated by the FEM model.</p>

Implementation of BECCS in a polygeneration system : - A techno-economic feasibility study in the district heating network of StockholmLinde, Linus January 2017 (has links)
The combination of Biomass Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) can reduce the level of CO2 in the atmosphere. It is, therefore, seen as an interesting tool in the CO2 abatement portfolio. In a Swedish context, BECCS could contribute to the goal of CO2 neutrality by 2045. This thesis aims to investigate the application of BECCS in the district heating system of Stockholm region with a case study at the energy utility Fortum Värme. The focus of the study is the technical and economic feasibility of such an application. The applicability of Fortum Värme´s plants to implement carbon capture is investigated together with costs and technical implications on each applicable plant and the district heating system as a whole. Three plants are deemed feasible for carbon capture with a cost of about 45€/tonne of captured CO2 (not including transport or storage). A model for transport of CO2 to promising storage sites in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark is constructed for transport by pipeline and ship. Ship transport is estimated to be the most cost-efficient option in all scenarios. The total cost for BECCS is calculated at 70-100€/tonne depending on size of emissions and distance to storage locations. Furthermore, the total cost is calculated to decrease by 10-25% if some current promising technologies for carbon capture reach maturity, a market for transport services of CO2 evolves, and a number of actors are sharing the costs for storage.Calculated costs are on a similar price level as other CO2 abatement strategies such as CCS in industries, biogas, and biodiesel in the vehicle fleet. If the cost is applied directly to the heat price, without any subsidies, it would increase the price of heat by 14-21%.The major challenge of BECCS in combined heat and power production, compared to other studies based on power production, is the seasonality of heat demand. The capacity of the carbon capture system will be oversized during the summer, or undersized during the winter. This is an optimization challenge which has to be further studied.

Readiness of school staff to implement an intervention to promote health in preschool class children in SwedenDanforth, Pontus January 2022 (has links)
Background: A Healthy School Start (HSS) is an evidence-based family-support program in the school setting aiming to promote health-related behaviors and prevent childhood obesity. However, there is a research gap how to implement programs effectively and what indicators to use for evaluation of implementation success. Aim: This thesis aimed to investigate how four constructs and indicators of implementation called organizational readiness for change, acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility among deliverers of the HSS differed at baseline between teachers, school nurses, and principals in Swedish schools, and if they were related to staff and school characteristics. Methods: Participants (n=79) answered validated short questionnaires in the fall of 2021. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze the mean scores in implementation indicators. Univariate linear regression was used to investigate associations between the staff and school characteristics and each indicator. Results: There was no significant difference in any score between the professions. Teachers had non-significantly higher organizational readiness for change, and principals expressed somewhat higher acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility while school nurses scored lowest overall. The number of students at the school was positively and significantly related to organizational readiness for change in the total sample, and higher parental education was associated with higher acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility. The readiness constructs were positively associated with the implementation indicators. Conclusion: School staff were overall positive at baseline towards implementing the HSS program. These results can be used when developing implementation strategies to support staff delivering health promotion programs in the school setting involving different school professions.

Feasibility Study on Conducting a Subcritical Molten Salt Reactor Experiment Using a DD Neutron Source / Evaluation of Different Reactivity Measurement MethodsMahdi, Mohammed January 2020 (has links)
Over the last two decades, there has been widespread international interest in the development of the molten salt reactor concept due to its passive safety, high coolant boiling temperature, low operational pressure, high thermal efficiency, and ease of breeding. Terrestrial Energy Incorporated (TEI) is developing a thermal-spectrum converter type molten salt reactor, called the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR-400) to be built by 2030. A physics experiment is needed in order to validate the theoretical predictions of the temperature reactivity coefficients of the IMSR-400. This thesis will determine the feasibility of conducting a subcritical experiment, utilizing a Deuterium-Deuterium Fusion Neutron Source (DD). / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

UX designers roll i offentliga upphandlingar : The role of UX designers in public procurementsGustafsson, Camilla January 2022 (has links)
To reach successful public procurements in the IT area it’s important to prepare the procurement process by planning resources, to map out and analyze needs, markets and risks (Upphandlingsmyndigheten, u.å.). A study of the literature in the area shows that the role of the UX designer is vaguely described. Instead the focus has traditionally been on usability in IT products and those responsible for user-centered design approaches have been the system suppliers. Some or none of the responsibility for the user needs has belonged to the public organization. But the literature also shows that the procurer needs to be active through a user-centered design process both in the requirements phase and throughout the entire project to reach successful public procurements. To explore how UX designers work in public procurement processes today the following framing of questions have been answered: ● What role and what kind of impact have UX designers on the procurement process inpublic procurements today? ● What characterizes the work of UX designers on the procurer’s side respectively the tenderer's side in the procurement process for public organizations? The results of an interview study and a document review shows that UX designers have a clear role on both sides of the procurement procedure. The impact on the procurer side was great but limited to the choice of solution proposals on the tenderer side. Fundamentally reviewing work processes, looking after the needs of the users, setting requirements according to function and needs instead of technical requirements and the importance of clear communication were what characterized the work of UX designers on both sides of the procurement process.
