This thesis explores the relationship between intonational patterns and its relationship with speech rhythm and discourse, according to the dynamic systems research program. The study of these relationships were based on Barbosa's (2006) Dynamic Model of Speech Rhythm; on DaTo intonational annotation system proposed by Lucente (2008); and on the Computational Model of the Structure of Discourse, proposed by Grosz & Sidner (1986). The Dynamic Model of Rhythm suggests that speech rhythm is the result of two oscillators action - accentual and syllabic - which receive linguistic and gestural information as input, and give the gestural duration as output. This thesis hypothesis is that in addition to these oscillators, a glottal oscillator can act controlling the intonation patterns of speech. These patterns, or intonational cycles, which organize the BP intonation, emerge when related to the spontaneous discourse segmentation. For each discourse segment classified as spontaneous, according to a criteria proposed in this thesis, the speech is segmented into the DaTo system framework in linguistically structured units, which contains the purposes of communication and attention. Each of these segments is aligned to the speech intonation pattern delimitated by a rising contour (LH or> HL) at the beginning and by a falling contour (LHL), or a boundary level (L), at the end. The speech rhythm is also aligned to the pattern formed between intonation and discourse. By the inclusion of a new layer for the stress groups segmentation into DaTo system was possible to observe the alignment between stress group segmentation and intonational annotation coinciding with discourse segments boundaries. The alignment between intonation, rhythm and discourse, having the stress groups as attractors, allowed us to propose the insertion of a glottal oscillator into the Dynamic Model of Rhythm / Doutorado / Doutora em Linguística

Previous issue date: 2006-10-20 / This dissertation aims at investigating the rhythmical and intonation aspects of the
English production by a fluent speaker of this language whose mother language is
Portuguese, having as a reference the production of a native speaker of English, and
thus, to inspect how and in which level the phonological-phonetic processes related
to sounds, rhythm and intonation of the target language are transferred to the
mother language prosody. The relation between the sound production and the
prosody can be seen in the connected speech provided by sound modifications in
the juncture between words, in the use of pauses, assimilation, reduction and
elimination of sounds, among others. The corpus, comprised of 40 sentences from
the film Dozen by the Cheaper was used to get closer to a connected speech
production. The sentences were typed in individual cards and read six times by
each subject, both female, between 25 and 30 years old, and the cards were shuffled
before each repetition. The six reading recordings were done at PUC-SP s Radio
and TV studio. The data analysis was provided by the Acoustic Phonetic using
duration measures (time a sound takes to be produced) and the variation of the
fundamental frequency (tone variation during the speech) based on the waveform
ranged to the wide-band spectrograms, extracted from the speech signal digitalized
by an acoustic analysis program. Some sentences from the corpus were chosen to
the analysis, and consonantal and vowel segments were measured. Duration
measures and f0 charts were made in order to observe how much the subjects got
closer or farther to the sound production, and to the English rhythm and intonation
due to the Brazilian Portuguese interference. The final results point that: (1) the
sound production, English rhythm and intonation are related to the connected
speech, the mother language (in this case, the Brazilian Portuguese) interfere in the
sound production and English prosody, but, an important aspect is that this
interference is not categorical, it can occur or not and, if it occurs, it must be done
in different levels; and (3) the Acoustic Phonetic provides some advantages to the
teaching and learning of a foreign language rhythm and intonation, in so far as the
different production aspects can be observed, making possible that the Brazilian
English teacher makes clear the differences between the mother language and the
target one to the students, differences that can or can t be noticed or produced by
corpus composto por 40 sentenças, retiradas do script do filme Dozen by the
A gravação
(neste trabalho, o português brasileiro) na produção de sons e prosódia do inglês;

Previous issue date: 2006-05-05 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / To characterize the supraglottic vocal tract shaping in the production of the seven oral and five nasal vowels of brazilian portuguese from the articulatory point of view by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: The subject of this study, one female native speaker of brazilian portuguese, had no previous alterations of speech, language or of neurological and auditory systems and with neither dental nor articulator alterations. The magnetic resonance images, collected during the production of the vowels sustained by the speaker, were analyzed for articulatory characterization. The results were considered according to articulatory and acoustic data researched in the related literature. Results and discussion: The nasal vowels, unlike the oral ones, presented three different moments, which are characterized by changes in the position of the articulators during their production; while the oral vowels presented only one moment/phase. The oral vowels, when compared to the nasal, maintained similar characteristics, being articulatorily classified by the position of their tongue-surface (both vertically and horizontally), by the opening of the oral cavity, by the rounding of the lips and by the position of the soft palate. The vowels that presented the greater differences, when compared to their oral and nasal counterparts, were [a]-[ã], [o]-[õ] and [u]-[uâ]. Production of nasal vowels took a longer time than their oral counterparts yielding a larger number of frames captured. Conclusion: Data obtained by means of MRI has allowed the analysis of the movements of the articulators during the production of the vowels contributing to: increasing the knowledge of brazilian portuguese vowels production mechanisms; characterizing the brazilian portuguese vowels inventory; providing insights to the evaluation and rehabilitation of speech disorders / Caracterizar a configuração do trato vocal supraglótico na produção das sete vogais orais e cinco nasais do português brasileiro do ponto de vista articulatório por meio de imagens de ressonância magnética (IRM).

Previous issue date: 2009-11-06 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This work is part of the sound acquisition area in second language (L2), specifically in
English, and it aimed to investigate whether there was a relationship between production and
perception of the voiceless interdental fricative pronunciation [θ] or not in a group of
Brazilian native speakers (BNS), based on acoustic and phonetic analysis. It was stated that
there is such a relationship on account of the BNS in the sample. According to the literature,
Brazilian learners of English tend to produce the voiceless interdental fricative [θ] as [s], [f]
and [t] ((LIEFF & NUNES, 1993). This is because they consider such sound to be similar to
[s], [f] and [t], and as stated by Flege (1999) and Meador, Flege and MacKay (2000), similar
sounds of L1 (native language, in this case, Brazilian Portuguese - BP) and L2 may cause
difficulties for the learner. Three studies have been made: an analysis of the production of the
3 BNS as well as of the AMS (American Native speaker) concerning the sound [θ]; an
analysis of the perception of the sound [θ] by the 3 BNS and, finally, an evaluation of the 3
BNS productions of the sound [θ] by 31 American Native judges. The results of the three
analyses have been crossed, and it can be posed that they conform to the literature about the
link between production and perception and the assimilation of sounds from L2 to L1.
Moreover, with such results, it was possible to achieve the goal of this work. It was verified
that, regarding the perception analysis, the three BNS tend to perceive the sound [θ] as [θ] or
[t]. Regarding the production analysis, one of the BNS approached the ANS. Therefore, it can
be stated that there is a relationship between this BNS perception and production. The two
remaining BNS did not approach the ANS. Most of the time, those speakers perceived the
sound [θ] as [t], and the same happened with their productions of the sound [θ]. Taking into
account those figures, it can be stated that there is a relationship among their production and
perception, even if they have not perceived the sound [θ] as it should have been done. The
perception and production analyses results were compared with the evaluation of the 31
judges, and the same can be said concerning all BNS: one of the BNS approached the ANS
concerning the sound [θ], and the two remaining ones did not approach the ANS. To sum up,
it was observed that, in this particular sample, there is a relationship between their
production and perception, and that two out of the three BNS assimilated the sound [θ] as [t] / Este trabalho situa-se na área de aquisição de sons de L2 (segunda língua), mais
L1, atingiram o objetivo e validaram a hipótese defendida.

The primary purpose of this thesis is to outline phonetic and phonological adaptations made by Brazilian speakers while pronouncing foreign anthroponyms, especially those derived from English. The topic discussed is straightly linked to the determination of a phonological identity of Portuguese. The study focuses on linguistic and extralinguistic aspects, which allow two different views on the subject. The first, based on social-historical grounds, retakes previous reflections on anthroponyms and their relevance to different people and cultures since ancient times. Under this perspective, the survey deals with discursive issues related to the act of naming people. The second view, based on structural linguistic grounds, is the main focus of the study, which is essentially conducted in the light of non-linear phonological models. By means of phonological contrastive analysis, similarities and differences are highlighted concerning the source language, American English (AE) and the target language, Brazilian Portuguese (BP). The corpus comprises anthroponyms typical of the English language as well as proper names whose spelling refer to this idiom. The names selection was based on attendance sheets from State Schools in the city of São Luís, MA. Recordings were carried out with both native English and Portuguese speakers, aiming at mapping the main phonological processes employed by these subjects when producing the foreign anthroponyms. Subjective matters were investigated through interviews that point out motivational reasons parents had for choosing foreign athroponyms; users satisfaction with their own name, as well as their appreciation for the English language. Following data transcriptions, the research presents the main observed adaptations motivated by speakers’ native phonological system, such as: a) addition of the epenthetic vowel [i], resulting...
