Previous issue date: 2003-06-17 / The Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is diagnosed when there is an exaggerated preoccupation with some minimal or imagined defect in the appearance, which brings significative impairments to the person s life. It has been sought to investigate the development and maintenance of the BDD behaviors through the functional analysis and the concept of experential avoidance proposed by Hayes, Wilson, Gifford and Follette (1996). Seven people with characteristic behaviors of the BDD, their families and four plastic surgeons participated in this study. It has been used as instruments: instructions to orient surgeons about behaviors of the BDD, enabling them to identify and invite patients to participate in the research; an identification questionnaire with the purpose to select the sample; semi-structured interviews for the participant and their families, containing questions relating to the history of the participants life, families relationship, the beginning of the concern with the appearance, behaviors of the BDD and actual contingencies which maintains them. Ten patients responded to the identification questionnaire and seven of them were selected. Individual interviews were made with each of the participants and their families, according to the necessity of collecting complementary data. From the recording and transcription of the interviews, it has been made a clinic systematical study, in which, the behaviors were described and analyzed according to probable origin and actual functioning processes. Beyond the behaviors related to the preoccupations with the appearance, typical behaviors of other disorders were found (such as: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Depression, Social Phobia, Hypochondria) and standards of behavior known as personality features (such as: vanity, perfectionism, aggressiveness). The results pointed similar functional processes, among all the participants. Among the origin processes there were: the cohersitive education with few positive reinforcements in the childhood, past occurrence like accidents, comparisons and comments relating to the part of the body which they worried about. These contingencies, probably, influenced the strong emphasis on discriminative stimuli related to the appearance. Among the actual processes there have been identified: negative reinforcement, lack of positive reinforcements, secondary gains and strong cultural influences of the valorization of the appearance. As particular variables to each case there have been found: low development of skilful socially behaviors, models in the childhood, extremely critical mother concerning to the appearance, among others. It has been concluded that the actual functioning of the BDD is marked by experiential avoidance where the individuals start avoiding the private aversive stimuli, like the anxiety, thoughts about their appearance and about the reaction of the people against their appearance. This avoidance prevents them from exposing themselves to the social situations, resulting in consequences such as social isolation and depressive behaviors. Functional resemblances were demonstrated for all seven cases studied although some topographic behaviors were different, indicating the necessity in considering the functionality of the behaviors and not only the arbitrariness of the psychiatric classification based on symptoms.

Fractional differential equations: a novel study of local and global solutions in Banach spaces / Equações diferenciais fracionárias: um novo estudo de soluções locais e globais em espaços de BanachCarvalho Neto, Paulo Mendes de 16 May 2013 (has links)
Motivated by the huge success of the applications of the abstract fractional equations in many areas of science and engineering, and by the unsolved question in this theory, in this work we study several matters related to abstract fractional Cauchy problems of order \'alpha\' \'it belongs\' (0, 1). We search to answer some questions that were open: for instance, we analyze the existence of local mild solutions for the problem, and its possible continuation to a maximal interval of existence. The case of critical nonlinearities and corresponding regular mild solutions is also studied.

Previous issue date: 2011-05-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Contingency analysis has been considered fundamental for the identification of variables of
certain behaviors so that such behaviors can be changed. The purpose of this work was to
determine the effect of a training course designed to teach teachers a part of contingency
analysis: assessment of the probable function of inadequate student behavior in the classroom.
Three elementary school teachers participated in the study. Every one of them indicated a
student whose in-class behavior they considered inadequate. The study consisted of eight stages:
Previous observations; Baseline (BL); Training; Test 1; generalization Test 1; application Test
1; generalization Test 2; and application Test 2. AT BL, teachers were presented eight
scenarios: four showing behaviors maintained by positive reinforcement by teacher s attention,
and the other four showing behaviors maintained by negative reinforcements by task escape,
each one followed by a question about the probable function of student s behavior. The
scenarios presented described: inadequate student behavior, antecedent events preceding the
behavior, behavior consequence, the resultant frequency of that behavior. During this stage, the
highest number of right answers was three. During training, the removal information procedure
was used. It consisted of six steps. Thus, 36 scenarios were used, six for each step (three where
behavior was maintained by the teacher s attention, and three by student s task escape from
academic tasks. Each scenario was accompanied by questions intended to identify the behavior,
preceding event, consequence, frequency and probable behavior function. At step 1, all
scenario-related questions had been answered. From step 2 onward, answers were withdrawn
one by one until no answer was provided to all questions. On Test 1, identical to BL, all three
participants had all eight questions right. Next, on generalization Test 1, teachers were asked to
describe the probable function of behavior in the student they indicated. Two teachers gave the
right answer on this test. On application Test 1, participants were asked to suggest a potential
intervention, and two of them proposed adequate interventions to change the inadequate
behavior of the student indicated. On generalization Test 2 (taken by only one participant), a
description of the interaction sequence between participant and student was provided, and the
question about the probable function of the student s behavior was made. On this test, the
participant gave a right answer. Finally, application Test 2, identical to application Test 1, was
administered, and no adequate intervention was proposed. The results obtained suggest that
training was effective in teaching teachers to determine the probable function of student
Participaram do estudo três professoras do ensino
prévias; Linha de Base (LB); Treino; Teste 1; Teste de generalização 1; Teste de aplicação 1;
comportamento do aluno.
No
acadêmicas. Cada cenário foi acompanhado de questões para identificação do comportamento;
do evento antecedente; da consequência; da frequência; e da provável função do
comportamento.
No Teste 1, idêntico à
Nesse Teste, duas
Nesse Teste, a
relativamente curto

Previous issue date: 2012-05-30 / In the last two decades the behavior analysis observed the emergence and growth of a line of research aimed at investigating the teaching of verbal repertoires description and functional analysis of conditions that could facilitate their teaching in applied settings. In Brazil at least two working groups study the teaching of functional analysis for teachers. The first group, UNESP Bauru, is represented by the academic work of Fonseca (2008), Sparvoli, (2008), Oliveira (2010) and Gomes (2010). The second group, the PUC SP, is represented by the works of Almeida (2009), Cerqueira (2009), Tavares (2009) and Leite (2010). The objective of this research was to analyze the data collected by these two lines of research to identify which variables were responsible for the results obtained in the teaching functional analysis and its generalization. The consistency of their methods with the principles of behavior analysis to education was investigated. The research was also aimed at identifying the difficulties mentioned by the authors propose some ways of overcoming. The results showed that the PUC SP group presented methods using experimental designs, and even used some principles of behavior analysis to education___ as the description of goals and behavioral measures, the preliminary assessment of the repertoire of the participants, the planning small steps, the constant promotion of responding to and use of a material easy to reproduce. These characteristics seem to have contributed to all the participants learn to identify the function of the behaviors presented in teaching situations. In relation to data on generalization, UNESP Bauru group achieved better results, since most of the participants managed to change their teaching practices after having gone through training. The result obtained by UNESP Bauru group may have been a function of training with multiple copies in the natural applied context. It was concluded that to meet the demands of the scientific community and service providers is necessary a careful description of methodological procedures. Repeatable and measurable variables benefit the research and the application. In addition, the following principles of behavior analysis to education, and planning of generalization, could increase the effectiveness of teaching procedures. Careful planning of the methods adopted by Almeida (2009), Cerqueira (2009), Leite (2010) and Tavares (2009), together with the applied context adopted by Fonseca (2008), Gomes (2010), Oliveira (2010) and Sparvoli ( 2008), may point to advances in behavior analytic proposals for education / Nas últimas duas décadas a análise do comportamento observou o surgimento e crescimento de uma linha de pesquisa voltada para a investigação do ensino de repertórios verbais de descrição de análises funcionais e de condições que pudessem facilitar o seu ensino em contextos aplicados.

Previous issue date: 2009-06-05 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Many studies about the contingency analysis teaching for non-psychologists have been
published. The procedures of some of these studies typically teach one of the necessary
abilities to the contingency analysis achievement: the application of a previously
defined standard procedure. Such studies generally don t make the apprentice to stay
under control of what maintains the behavior wanted to be changed. Based on this, the
present study intended to verify the efficacy of a training to teach teachers to raise a
probable function of the behavior considered inadequate of the students in the
classroom. Participated three elementary teachers, who had indicated one of their
classrooms student that presented behaviors considered undesirable by them. In the
baseline, eight written scenes of situations in the classroom that involved inadequate
behaviors of students were presented to the participants. These behaviors could be
maintained by positive reinforcement (attention gain from the teacher) or negative
reinforcement (demand escape). The participants should answer, based only in the eight
scenes, about the behaviors emitted by the students, the consequences, the antecedents,
the frequencies that followed and the probable function of the behaviors. The training
had 14 scenes. The experimenter provided analysis models for the first two scenes,
answering the questions that accompanied the scenes. For every two scenes that
followed, the answers for one of the analysis questions were removed, raising the
number of questions to be answered by the participants. In test 1, equal to the baseline,
the participants performance improved, almost reaching the maximum possible, which
shows that the training was effective. A second test, the test 2, was made by presenting
only the questions about what functions could have the behaviors presented in another
eight scenes. In this test, two participants had their performance worse than in the test 1,
what could indicate that they still needed the questions about the previous items and that
it may be important to remove these questions gradually. A generalization test was
made by asking the participants about the behavior probable function of the student
from her classroom that had been indicated. Based on the experimenter s classroom
observation, all the participants seemed to be able to identify the probable function of
their student s behaviors, but when asked to propose an intervention based on the
behavior function, only one of the participants did it, with partially adequate
interventions, what shows that being able to identify the function of the behavior
doesn t imply being able to propose an intervention / Muitos estudos sobre o ensino de análise de contingências para não-psicólogos têm sido
publicados.
Participaram três professoras do ensino
importante retirar essas perguntas gradualmente.

Previous issue date: 2017-09-04 / The present study investigated the control exerted by antecedent and consequent events on
the fear responses of three women diagnosed with anxiety disorder, and aged 45-74 years.
To research these events was applied the process of functional assessment by using the
strategies: (a) indirect functional assessment through interview (appointment), (b) direct
functional assessment through direct observation, and (c) functional analysis or functional
analysis methodology. The functional analysis consisted of the manipulation
environmental events, especially in four principal conditions: attention, demand, alone and
control. The attention condition was subdivided in (1) to contact-attention, (2) to worryattention,
and (3) to establish-attention. The data obtained with the procedures adopted in
the indirect assessment by interview, as well as that ones in direct observation of
participants in the natural environment provided important subsidies to the experimental
framework of functional analysis, and showed complementary to it. The functional
analysis results demonstrated that the fear responses occurred with high frequency in
attention and demand conditions, and didn't occur in alone and control conditions.
However, one class of results, sensorial stimulation occurred in high frequency in alone
condition. So, it was evident the control on fear responses by the sources positive and
negative reinforcement, while the sensorial stimulations were controlled by automatic
reinforcement. The date obtained make evident that the investigation by functional
analysis methodology demonstrated the importance of fear responses control by using
sources of positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and automatic reinforcement.
The process of functional assessment applied in this study proved to be effective, once it
was showed the control exerted by antecedent and consequent events on the fear responses
and sensorial stimulation of the participants; than this way it is justified its application to
evaluate the behavior of people diagnosed with anxiety disorder.

An Algorithm for the Machine Calculation of Minimal PathsWhitinger, Robert 01 August 2016 (has links)
Problems involving the minimization of functionals date back to antiquity. The mathematics of the calculus of variations has provided a framework for the analytical solution of a limited class of such problems. This paper describes a numerical approximation technique for obtaining machine solutions to minimal path problems. It is shown that this technique is applicable not only to the common case of finding geodesics on parameterized surfaces in R3, but also to the general case of finding minimal functionals on hypersurfaces in Rn associated with an arbitrary metric.

Structural and Functional Analysis of Grapefruit C-3OGT Mutant P145TKandel, Sangam, Khaja, Sarah, Shivakumar, Devaiah P., McIntosh, Cecelia A. 10 August 2015 (has links)
Flavonoids are a class of secondary metabolites, the majority of which are present in glucosylated form. Glucosyltransferases are the enzymes that mediate glucosylation by transferring glucose from a high energy sugar donor to the acceptor substrates. Our study focuses on the structural and functional analysis of a flavonol-specific 3-O-glucosyltransferase (Cp-3-O-GT) clone from Citrus paradisi that has been characterized previously in our lab. Multiple sequence alignment and homology modeling was done to identify candidate residues for mutation. Cp-3-O-GT was modeled with a flavonoid 3-O-GT from Vitis vinifera (VvGT) that can glucosylate both flavonols and anthocyanidins. We identified a proline residue at position 145 of Cp-3-O-GT that corresponded to a threonine residue in VvGT and designed a Cp-3-O-GT- P145T mutant to test the hypothesis that that mutation of proline by threonine in Cp-3-O-GT could alter substrate or regiospecificity of Cp-3-OGT. While the mutant P145T enzyme did not glucosylate anthocyanidins, it did glucosylate flavanones and flavones in addition to flavonols. This is significant because flavanones and flavonols do not contain a 3-OH group. HPLC was performed to identify the reaction products. Early results indicated that the mutant protein glucosylates naringenin at 7-OH position forming prunin. Product identification with other substrates is in progress. Results are being used to revisit and refine the structure model. Structural and functional analysis of flavonoid GTs may contribute to custom design of GTs for the synthesis of novel glucosides by changing glucosylation patterns.

Structure-Function Investigations of Site-Directed Mutants of Citrus paradisi Flavonol-Specific 3 O Glucosyltransferase (Cp3OGT) – Impact of Mutations of Serine, Histidine, and GlutamineSathanantham, Preethi, Shivakumar, Devaiah P., McIntosh, Cecelia A. 09 August 2015 (has links)
Glucosyltransferases (GTs) are enzymes that enable transfer of glucose from an activated donor (UDP-glucose) to the acceptor substrates. A flavonol specific glucosyltransferase cloned from Citrus paradisi has strict substrate and regiospecificity (Cp3OGT). The amino acid sequence of Cp3OGT was aligned with a purported anthocyanin GT from Clitorea ternatea and a GT from Vitis vinifera that can glucosylate both flavonols and anthocyanidins. Using homology modeling to identify candidate regions followed by site directed mutagenesis, three double mutations of Cp3OGT were made. Biochemical analysis of the three mutant proteins was performed. S20G+T21S protein retained activity similar to the wildtype (WT- Kmapp-80 µM; Vmax = 16.5 pkat/µg, Mutant- Kmapp-83 µM; Vmax -11 pkat/µg) but the mutant was more thermostable compared to the WT and this mutation broadened its substrate acceptance to include the flavanone, naringenin. S290C+S319A mutant protein retained 40% activity relative to wildtype, had an optimum pH shift, but had no change in substrate specificity (Kmapp-18 µM; Vmax-0.5 pkat/µg). H154Y+Q87I protein was inactive with every class of flavonoid tested. Product identification revealed that the S20G+T21S mutant protein widened the substrate and regio-specificity of CP3OGT. Docking analysis revealed that H154 and Q87 could be involved in orienting the ligand molecules within the acceptor binding site. H363, S20, and S150 were also found to make close contact with the 7-OH, 4-OH and 3’-OH groups, respectively.
