The treacle triplets : a functional approach to the translation of children's literatureSas, Isabeau 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the mechanics behind the translation of children’s literature through a
practical translation from Dutch into English and an introspective commentary thereof. It also
examines the cultural disparity and Anglo-American dominance within (translated) children’s
literature.
Through this translation and study, this thesis would like to contribute to the one-sided literary
traffic and point out the cultural consequences this imbalance in trade will hold. Not only for a
world library of children’s literature, but also for English speaking children who are increasingly
oblivious of foreign literature. This thesis especially addresses the British reluctance towards
translated foreign children’s literature due to the strong position of English as a language and the
quality of the British national children’s literature. Furthermore, it challenges translation studies to
consider the different needs and strategies for the translation of children’s literature.
The approach this translator proposed for the translation of De zusjes Kriegel was a functional
dialogic approach. This thesis therefore touches upon the developments that have led to the rise and
wide applicability of functionalism in the practice of translation. Some of the most salient theorists
in translation of children’s literature will also be discussed, specifically focusing on Riitta
Oittinen’s ideas on Bakhtinian dialogue and carnivalism in relation to the translation of children’s
literature.
A functional dialogic approach to the practical translation of De zusjes Kriegel has led to an overall
naturalised and domesticated translation in which the source text was adapted to a British target text
cultural setting. This strategy was chosen to guarantee positive reception of the translation in the
target text culture. A small-scale empirical reception survey has asserted this positive reception and
reinforced some of this thesis’ presuppositions, among others that English-speaking children have
no access to and no knowledge of foreign literature.
Through the success of the practical translation and the positive reception of the target text this
study has emphasised the importance and cultural necessity of translating foreign children’s
literature into English.
In hierdie
doeltekskultuurkonteks aangepas is.

Translation of Japanese children’s literature into Finnish examined through the lens of functionality : A case studyLuoma-Halkola, Samppa January 2023 (has links)
Japanese children’s literature translated directly into Finnish is a very novel phenomenon, which is why there is currently a vacuum of research in that area. This study aims to begin to fill that vacuum. The present study examines the Japanese children’s literature series Oshiri Tantei and its Finnish translation through one of the most central theories in the field offunctional translation, the skopos theory. Functionalism in translation studies is a broad term for theories which, true to its name, place emphasison the function of the translation in the target culture as a stand alone text rather than equivalence or linguistic equivalence with the original. Focus was placed on analyzing what kind of translation problems there are in the original text, and how the translator has solved these problems. It was then determined, based on these results, if it can be said that the translation conforms to the directives laid down by the skopos theory. The results seem to indicate that strict equivalence with the original text has not been apriority, as several changes both in the meaning and form were observed in the translation. While it cannot be said with complete certainty that this stems solely from conscious thoughts of functionalism by the translator, the translation seems to conform to the principles of the functional skopos theory.

Traduire l’économie : Une approche fonctionnaliste à la traduction de textes sur l’économie pour les étudiants en 2022 / Translating Economics : A functional approach to translation of economic texts for students in 2022Borzasi Dull, Julia January 2022 (has links)
This paper analyses cultural factors in translation from French to Swedish of four articles about economic theory for a non-specialized audience. The base hypothesis is that given the content of the articles (basic theories in Economics, such as monopolies, game theory and price discrimination) and the similarity of readers of both source and target texts (non-specialized audiences, e.g., students in Economics), cultural differences should not give rise to translation problems. The paper explores whether this is the case, and if so, how the translation difficulties can be solved. The main theoretical framework are the functional models of Nord and Reiss, which are complemented by theories on intertextuality in translation, cultural words and anglicisms. We conclude that contrary to the base hypothesis, there are several translation problems due to cultural differences. Strategies for solving them are built around the concepts of naturalisation and foreignization, as well as Brynja Svane’s theoretical model.

Quando a tradução (re)conta a história: análise textual e tradução comentada de interrogatórios da \'Rosa Branca\' / When translation (re)tells History: text analysis and commented translation of interrogations of the White RoseSchäfer, Anna Carolina 12 August 2015 (has links)
This study aims to produce a commented translation from German into Portuguese of a selection of iconic documents of the German resistance to the National Socialism. The corpus is specifically consisted of written records of the interrogations (in German: Verhörprotokolle, interrogation protocols) conducted in February 1943 by the Nazi Secret Police with the brothers Hans and Sophie Scholl. Both were members of the group The White Rose, mostly comprised of students from the University of Munich who opposed the National Socialist regime by producing and distributing pamphlets in which they released incisive criticism to the government and apathetic posture of the German population before the crimes committed by it. Bearing in mind the overall aim of the work and the historical context to which the corpus belongs, an interdisciplinary theoretical basis was used in the analysis and translation of the protocols, based both in the historical research elements and on suppositions of the Functional Translation Studies especially in the model for translation-oriented text analysis by Christiane Nord (1988, 2009) , Text Linguistics and Discourse Analysis. For the commented translation of the protocols, the end product of this research, a documentary function was envisaged from the beginning, which justifies different micro decisions taken throughout the translation process, ranging from the choice of reproducing the original formatting of the source texts in German to the search for reconstituting the historical background of the source texts by means of comments and images intentionally inserted on the right edge of the page, and not in footnotes or at the end of the translation. It is, therefore, expected that the translated texts can be consulted, read and analyzed as documents and testimonies of the German resistance to the National Socialism, a subject still little publicized and studied in Brazil.

Facilitating African Language translation in the South African Department of DefenceGoussard-Kunz, Irene Maria 30 June 2003 (has links)
This study aimed to determine whether the current African language translation facilitation course (ALTFC) held at the Directorate Language Services (D Lang) is in tune with contemporary trends in translator training, as well as the needs of the South African Department of Defence (DOD) and ALTFC candidates. In order to accomplish these aims, the research methodology was divided into a theoretical component in the form of a literature survey and an empirical component by means of questionnaire research. While the literature survey revealed that with the exception of using corpora of parallel texts, the ALTFC largely follows contemporary trends in translator training, the questionnaire research identified four problem areas, i.e. feedback on practical work, the time factor, the candidates' English proficiency and teacher enthusiasm. Based on the theoretical and empirical findings, four new ALTFC models were developed. / Linguistics / MA (Linguistics)

Han som aldrig dör : Sångöversättning av fem av Juan Gabriels sånger med kommentar / He who never dies : Song translation of five of Juan Gabriel's songs with commentaryNohrstedt, Emilia January 2023 (has links)
In this bachelor’s thesis, the work of translating five songs by Juan Gabriel from Spanish to Swedish (Ya lo sé que tú te vas, Hasta que te conocí, Vienes o voy, Abrázame muy fuerte and Yo te recuerdo) is reported and analyzed through a translation theory commentary. The commentary presents a brief overview of different aspects of song translation, then analyzes the source texts, and then finally proceeds to present the translation work. The theory is based on Johan Franzon's functional song translation theory. The aim was to create singable translations with the purpose to highlight complex problems in song translation, especially from Spanish to Swedish. Challenges that arose during the translation are discussed and relevant differences between the languages are presented.
