ANTECEDENTS OF ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTION: EXAMINING THE IMPACT OF GENDER IDENTITY, GRIT, THE DARK TRIAD, AND BARRIERS TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Voegel, Luke 01 December 2017 (has links)
Entrepreneurs play a vital role in the modern day economy. Knowing what causes an individual to become an entrepreneur has fostered much attention in academic literature, but not enough of the research has looked into individual level variables that could cause an individual to have an entrepreneurial intention. This study addresses this need in research by utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior to investigate entrepreneurial intention. Not all entrepreneurs are alike. Some entrepreneurs are motivated by financial gains while others are motivated by social concerns. The individual characteristics of entrepreneurs may not be identical, but it is believed that there are similarities. This current study uses a self-report survey approach to examine the potential impact that barriers to entry into entrepreneurship will have upon an individual’s commercial and social entrepreneurial intention. This study will also examine the moderating effect of gender identity, grit, and the Dark Triad of personality upon the previously established relationship of the three TPB antecedents to intention and commercial and social entrepreneurial intention.

“Just cuz you wear a cowboy hat doesn't make you a cowboy": perceptions of masculinity among emerging adults

Grinter, Kristopher January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / School of Family Studies and Human Services / Bronwyn S. Fees / Research conducted since 1990 suggests that young adults over 18 but under 29 years of age feel as though they are neither an adult nor an adolescent but somewhere between. This blur of boundaries between adolescence and adulthood can lead to the question, if a male does not yet think he is an adult, does he also not yet think he is a man? Guided by Arnett’s theory of emerging adulthood, the purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to identify the inter-individual differences in characterizing masculinity and the factors that may contribute to the development of these definitions. Males (n = 20) from a public Midwestern university, ages 18-23 (x̄ = 19.7 years) participated in individual interviews addressing their perceptions and definitions of masculinity. Three dominant themes about masculinity emerged including physical, emotional and behavioral characteristics, with behavioral characteristics containing 11 dominant and 4 lesser themes. While participants’ ideas about the extrinsic or visible characteristics of men and masculinity were similar to that of their peers in this study, the intrinsic or ideological characteristics of men were more closely aligned with that of their families. The majority of participants identified as not being men but stated that they are in the process of achieving manhood. Thus the development of a man may be separate from but similar to that of the development of an adult. Implications of this study include the practitioner response to influences responsible for differing masculine characteristics and the behaviors that result. Drinking alcohol has strong peer and media influences, as does disrespect toward women, both of which could have an impact on the individual. Also, the stress associated with various conflicting messages from family, peers, media, and their own opinions may be problematic for many youth.

"Alla kan bara man vill!" : En kvalitativ undersökning av barns erfarenheter och föreställningar om olika yrken ur ett genusperspektiv / “Everybody can if they want to!” : A qualitative examination of children’s experience and conceptions of various professions from a gender perspective.

Bellos, Dina, Rebecchi, Angelica January 2018 (has links)
Abstract The aim of this essay is to examine if children’s, in this case girls and boys between four and six year old, experiences and perceptions of various occupations follow a gender stereotypical pattern that is distinguishable in the society and that is evidenced by a gender distributed list presented by the Central Bureau of Statistics (SCB 2016). These children’s experiences and perceptions are examined in relation to family and surroundings. The central question is how they describe occupations and occupational-related activities offered in a school and preschool environment from a gender perspective. These children’s experiences and perceptions are also examined in relation to how they describe their career-related aspirations. Our study is theoretically based upon two different alignments of the gender theory that describe the social construction of gender. The data collection is based on 7 group interviews with 31 children from one preschool class and two different preschools. The results of our study indicate that the children have occupational experience that they relate to family members and/or to their immediate surroundings. The majority of the children’s experiences show that chores are distributed equally within the family and are therefore described as genus neutral. However, the majority of the children's occupational experience is gender-influenced, thus following the gender segregated labor market outlined by Central Bureau of Statistics (2016) list. Their own occupational aspirations also show that they follow this gender stereotypical pattern. The study emphasizes that the children are active agents in their development of gender identity and that their gender identity appears more clearly in specific contexts. On the other hand, we see that girls are more eager to extend the limits of the female arena. Another important aspect that the study shows is that the occupational activities offered in the school and preschool activities have a positive impact on how children distinguish their own ability. This can increase their ability to feel that they can do it if they really want to!

Könsidentitet : Att förstå sin position i familjen

Linder, Alexandra January 2018 (has links)
The problem I am reporting in this study is concerning the inequalities that is going on between men and women at home and in the family. This study aims at making a literature study on how gender identities affect women and men in the family with a secondary analysis of previous research. My questions are, what barriers and opportunities regarding gender identity impacts on the sex can be identified at home, what does this look like concerning the division of work in home work, and what does it look like concerning family relationships in the private sector? The theoretical frame of reference consists mainly of the theory of socialization described by scientist like Connell, Ahrne and Roman, Agnvik, Berger and Luckmann, and others. The theory focuses on the connection of how to socialize into different roles during the adolescence. The theory also describes the different concepts that occur and are in connection with the study. It also brings up background about gender and work at home. The section on previous research brings up things concerning power in relationships and the woman's mental health. The method in this work is qualitative, and I have used a literature study as an examination method. The result shows that the main inequality between the sexes in the home is that women take greater responsibility for household chores and the care of the children than men do. In the discussion, I came across just as some scientists suggested that most of our surroundings are gender-marked, and those who are associated with women are less important. As well as to solve this problem, the standards for traditional female as well as masculinity it has to be removed.

The study about nurse's identity at cooperative hospital institution

Zuza, Daniele Cristina, 1978- 28 February 2007 (has links)
Orientador: Mauro Antonio Pires Dias da Silva / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Facudade de Ciencias Medicas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-09T01:29:02Z (GMT). The practice of the work, as a nurse, unleashed countless anxieties about the actions that make the structure of the profession. Many times, answering the requirements of the hospital institutions, the nurses carry out actions of managerial administrative features, considered by many as not specific of the nursing, moving away from the activities linked to the patients assistance.Through the qualitative focalization, this study intends to disclose the nurses perception about the work in a cooperative hospital and to discribe the nurses adaptation of identity for the adjustement to the professional practice. The semi-structured interview used because it allows to keep the atention on the focus of the question without limits, and it favours the spontaneous expression of the informers¿ idea. The theoretical references used about identity based on the Social Psychology and on nursing authors that developed researches about this subject. We collected and identified the speeches in Thematic Unity and Important Structures. From the cuttings of the testimonies we stablished the analyses, linking them with bibliographies that could allow discussions and inferences about the subject. At Thematic Unity I the questions linked to the duality of being an assistance nurse or an administrative nurse, to be a nurse for an ideal and to be a leader nurse. At Thematic Unity II the considerable structures focalized the contraditions on being a nurse between the theory and practice. At Thematic Unity III the nurse¿s action received the focalization of the autonomy absence. The difficulties and facilities on the work execution were current on the nurses¿ reports and current at Thematic Unity IV. Finishing the discussions that allowed to comprehend the nurses identity on the reality studied, we dealed at Thematic Unity V with the profissional and personal characteristics that changed. The study about the nurse identity in this cooperative hospital institution, allowed to comprehend that the identity adaptations happen, mainly to reply the expectancies of the institution, but they must be noticed to not immobilize the behaviours / Mestrado / Enfermagem e Trabalho / Mestre em Enfermagem

Using (in)visibility and self-efficacy to critically explore the gendered hierarchies that prevail in organisation

Munian, Veloshnee January 2013 (has links)
The study was prompted by the persistent paucity of women in the higher echelons of companies. Extant literature on meritocracy and choice did not offer a complete explanation for this. The study therefore set out to explore and challenge the underlying assumptions that have perpetuated the solidification of gendered hierarchies in organisations. A qualitative research design approach was used. Information was gathered from 12 in-depth interviews with female managers who worked in the greater Johannesburg area. Through the tradition of phenomenological design, the essence of the women’s career progression was analysed through the perceptions and lived experiences of the participants. Structural barriers were identified in the organisations. The higher the visibility of the male dominated inner circles present, the more discernible the barriers were, the more the self-efficacy of the females diminished. The study makes a case for the invisibility of inner circles to be eliminated. When inner circles are more visible, prior assumptions can be challenged. The study also identified pioneering opportunities for women to entrench their own successful outcomes in organisations that can contribute to their sustainable career progression. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / lmgibs2014 / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / MBA / Unrestricted
