Ecology and Control of Triatomine (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) Vectors of Chagas Disease in Guatemala, Central America

Monroy, Maria Carlota January 2003 (has links)
This thesis analyses several factors affecting the control of triatomines in Guatemala. There are three synantropic triatomines in Guatemala, i.e., Rhodnius prolixus, Triatoma dimidiata and T. nitida. Their distibution is mainly at an altitude between 800 and 1500 m a.s.l. R. prolixus and T. nitida have localized but scaterred distibution while T. dimidiata is present in 21 of the 22 departments in the country. Several investigations have shown that R. prolixus could be relatively easily eradicated while T. dimidiata may be more difficult to control, since it is present in domestic, peridomestic and sylvatic environments showing high diversity and a variety of epidemiological characteristics. Based on the incidence of Trypanosma cruzi infection in humans in the distributional areas of the triatomines, R. prolixus appear to be a more competent vector than T. dimidiata. This is despite the fact that these vectors have similar infection rates. Inside houses, R. prolixus and T. dimidiata and in artificial environments, T. ryckmani and T. dimidiata, preferred the northern side of the walls. Therefore, selective application of insecticides should focus on walls and furniture located in the northern part of the house. House improvements reduced the infestation of triatomines, and could be used as a complement to insecticidal spraying. Although T. dimidiata is not an efficient vector its wide distribution, versatility in occupying different habitats and capacity to disperse render this species difficult to control in Central America. Thus, only few months after insecticidal spraying T. dimidiata had reinfested the domestic environments. Morphometic methodology and genetic markers have been developed to differentiate within-species populations of T. dimidiata and T. nitida. Studies on the migration patterns of sylvatic T. dimidiata and T. ryckmani have been performed in order to clarify the colonization patterns. The adults migrate, in particular, in the dry part of the year. This finding may be of help in attempts to control T. dimidiata.

Distribuição espacial de espécies arbóreas na área de vida de Sapajus nigritus (Primates, Cebidae) na Mata Atlântica, Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho, estado de São Paulo / Spatial distribution of tree species present in the home range of Sapajus nigritus (Primates, Cebidae) in the Atlantic, Carlos Botelho State Park, State of Sao Paulo

Eliza Sevghenian 29 October 2012 (has links)
Despite efforts in conducting research with primates in the Atlantic, there are still few studies topography, composition and distribution of vegetation with the pattern of occupation of the area by primates. Scarcity of such research, these relationships were analyzed in two areas within the home range of a group of Sapajus nigritus an area of dense rain forest, located in the Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho (PECB), State of Sao Paulo. Aiming to discover whether there is relationship between the distribution of trees with the usage pattern of the area (related to the routes taken in 2007) by the group Sapajus nigritus. With the aid of an image of the IBGE of 1:50.000 area PECB, assigned by the Forestry Institute, in São Paulo, a cut was made in the area of group life in ArcView 9.3 for selecting two areas, the first area known as central area (or core area) - where the group frequently used, was called area A, and the second area, a small portion of the peripheral area of life - with steepest slope, called Area B. In each of these areas were installed three sample units, one on top of the hill area, one in the hilly area and a background area in the valley, totaling six units strains (G1, G2, G3, G4, G5 and G6) . Each sample unit, containing four plots of 20 x 20 m (400 m2), spaced 40 m 60 m divided into subplots of 5 x 5 m (25 m2), totaling 24 plots and 384 plots, totaling an area of 9,600 m2. The inclusion criterion was DBH (diameter at breast height) 10 cm. The results floristic sampled 672 individuals belonging to 146 species and 84 families (taking into account the unidentified individuals and the dead). The families with the highest species richness were respectively Myrtaceae, Lauraceae and Fabaceae for all sample units. Of the 146 sampled species, 70 species are used by the group Sapajus nigritus as food, among them, 43 (the majority) are sampled in both areas and are distributed in the smallest diameter class. As for phytosociology, the species with the highest importance index (IVI) were: Ocotea catharinensis (Shin-black) for the sampling grids in areas of hill top and slope, and Alchornea triplinervia (Tapia) for the sampling grids in areas the valley bottom. The results indicated that the composition of phytosociological vegetation plots sampled in different situations topography was not related to the pattern of occupation of the area by the group of capuchin monkeys, because the tree species are sampled in both areas evenly. The fact that the group used more often to the central area of life is not related to the distribution of vegetation and with no topographic features, but may be related to other factors such as the availability of fruits, seasonal variation, protection against predators and other behavioral factors.

Espécies de parasitóides (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) de moscas-das-frutas (Diptera: Tephritidae) no estado de São Paulo: caracterização taxonômica, distribuição geográfica e percentagem de parasitismo / Braconid parasitoids (hymenoptera) of fruit flies (diptera: tephritidae) in the state of são paulo: taxonomic characterization, geographic distribution and percentage of parasitism

Cláudia Fidelis Marinho 22 April 2004 (has links)
This work presents the results of a survey of braconid fruit fly parasitoids from 33 localities in the State of São Paulo. In addition to the taxonomic studies, data of geographical distribution and association of braconid species to insect hosts and associated plants were also performed. A total of 3,009 specimens were colleted. The subfamily Opiinae was the most abundant with 96.2% of specimens colleted, and only 3.8% of the parasitoids belonged to the subfamily Alysiinae. Six species of braconids were collected: Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti), Doryctobracon brasiliensis (Szépligeti), Utetes anastrephae (Viereck), Opius bellus (Wesmael) and Opius sp. (Wesmael), beyond the alisiíneo Asobara anastrephae (Muesebeck). Most of the braconids (77.5%) belonged to D. areolatus. This species was associated with the highest number of fruit tree species (26), in 7 families, and occurred in the majority of the cities sampled (30). It was associated to Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.), A. obliqua (Macquart) and A. amita Zucchi, and it is recorded for the first time from fruit fly larvae in wampi, Clausena lansium (Lour) Skeels, and in "canela-batalha" fruits, Cryptocarya aschersoniana Mez. Doryctobracon brasiliensis was associated only to A. fraterculus, and it is recorded for the first time in fruit fly larvae in plum, Prunus salicina Lindl. It was not possible to associate the other parasitoid species to the fruit fly species. Opius sp. was associated with the fruit fly larvae in "canela-batalha" (first record of associate plant). The percentage of tephritid parasitism in the 33 cities was of 7.75%, varying from 0.02% to 40%. A key to identification for the braconid species was elaborated.

Furthermore, new tools for generating ecological niche and palaeoclimate models are shifting the direction of phylogeographic studies by making them more integrated. The Brazilian savanna (Cerrado biome) vegetation covers some 2 million km² of Central Brazil, representing about 23% of the land surface of the country. Although recent studies indicate that the biome harbours a rich, complex and characteristic reptilian fauna, patterns of species distribution and genetic structure remain poorly understood for the Cerrado herpetofauna. The lizard Tropidurus oreadicus has an interesting ecological history related to the open vegetation formations, occuring in open areas of Cerrado and in savanna enclaves in Amazonia rainforest. In order to investigate its evolutionary history, we used a robust geographical and genetic sampling, a multilocus dataset and palaeodistribution modelling based on the projection of current distribution into past environments (6 and 21ky BP) using 11 methods for SDMs and five coupled atmosphere–ocean global circulation models (AOGCMs). Our results provide new insights on the genetic and spatial structure of the species revealing six major mtDNA lineages and divergence dates with both deep (Tertiary) and shallow (Quaternary) patterns of diversification for the species tree. The spatial analysis for paleodistribution modelling showed little retractions in Mid-Holocene and the refugia map suggests a broad stable area for the species. The relative influences of Neogene geomorphological events and Quaternary climatic changes as causal mechanisms on the species diversification are discussed. Lastly, we present some inferences about potential future changes in the species geographical distribution, aiming to contribute with the recent conservation discussions on how to preserve Brazilian biodiversity in public policies of conservation / A biogeografia histórica está atualmente revigorada devido à revolução da genética molecular na sistemática filogenética e genética populacional, além das novas abordagens para se testar hipóteses biogeográficas.

Thus, it should be the focus of studies related to this disease. This study was conducted in Buriticupu-MA, a city with higher incidence of leishmaniasis in the State. This work aimed to study epidemiological aspects of ATL in Buriticupu the period 2005 to 2010. Data collection was performed at the Center for Studies in Tropical Medicine of the Pre-Amazon UFMA, Meteorology Laboratory of the Center Geoenvironmental UEMA, the Department of the Unified Health System - DATASUS and capture of sandflies in areas with reported cases ACL with the CDC light traps. It found the diagnosis of 281 autochthonous cases of ATL in Buriticupu, of which 238 patients were aged 10 years or more, predominantly in individuals 20 to 29 years. Regarding gender, 86 were female and 195 male. Virtually all cases were diagnosed with the cutaneous form, with the direct parasitological examination detected 228 cases and 53 IDRM. The overall detection was classified in high and very high levels, ranging from 20,0 to 135,0 cases per 100 000 inhabitants. The registration of cases had a higher concentration in the months July to December, ie during the dry season with low rainfall and high temperature. We captured 377 specimens of sandflies, predominantly the species L. whitmani. The ACL was largely distributed in Buriticupu the period 2005 to 2010, reaching rural areas and urban areas, especially in the main access roads to the city, BR 222, the corridor leading to the train station and the borders with neighboring municipalities. It is believed that the precariousness of the health infrastructure in the municipality can be detected by providing a favorable environment for the development of the vector, creating conditions for humans becoming infected in the vicinity of their homes.

The Maximilian’s snake-necked-turtle, Hydromedusa maximiliani, is specie endemic to the Atlantic Forest and endangered in category Vulnerable by IUCN, whose populations are mainly associated with streams inside the forest, but the geographical distribution related to these environments hydrologically dynamic is poorly understood. Species Distribution Modeling has been a tool widely used in recent years. The Maximum Entropy algorithm, Maxent predicts the potential geographic distribution of species from presence data. This study aimed to build ecological models to predict the potential distribution of H. maximiliani that may provide support for development of new strategies for the conservation and thus contribute to the advancement in knowledge about the pattern of their distribution in regions with the Atlantic Forest domain. The occurrence data were obtained between September 2012 and September 2013, through visits to the zoological collections, bibliographic and collection of geographic coordinates in the field. To construct the model we used the Maxent algorithm, aided by ArcGIS version 10 and the digital elevation model of the "Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission". The environmental variables were obtained by Worldclim version 1.1 Cimate Global Surface 10. The model was endorsed by the AUC (Area Under the ROC Curve) and the statistical test Jackknife. 42 points were compiled for the distribution of H. maximiliani. The potential distribution extended from southern Bahia to São Paulo. The generated model showed high predictive ability, with higher AUC value to 0.97, and showed a satisfactory transferability (i.e. ability to predict distributions in regions not sampled ). The high AUC value shows a good distribution model geographic potential of species. However, in models of large scale, this value can be presented proportional to the size of the scale, which would lead to a misinterpretation of the model. However, the areas provided for the distribution of H. maximiliani in this study are realistic and consistent with the distribution realityof the species.

Fytoplankton tatranských ples: faktory ovlivňující druhové složení a biomasu / Phytoplankton of the Tatra lakes: factors influencing taxonomic composition and biomass

Červenková, Lenka January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis was to describe species composition and biomass of phytoplankton in the Tatra Mountains lakes (Slovakia, Poland) and environmental factors influencing them. The surface layer of 89 lakes was sampled in September 2004. Flagellates from Chrysophyta, Dinophyta and Cryptophyta most frequently dominated the phytoplankton biomass. Lake in the same valley usually differed in their dominant taxonomic group as a result of different lake morphometry, catchment type and detailed geological structure. Based on the level of phytoplankton biovolume, the majority of lakes were ultraoligotrophic and oligotrophic, however, mesotrophic and even eutrophic conditions were recorded in some forest and meadow lakes. An allometric relationship between phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll a was revealed. Specific chlorophyll content did not differ among taxonomic groups. Altogether 233 species were determined, the most diverse group were Chlorophyta. Species richness of lake was 3-46 and it was negatively correlated with altitude and positively correlated with lake area. The majority of species were rare both in term of biomass and number of lakes occupied by a particular species. Average local species biomass was positively correlated with regional distribution. The similarity of species...

The study of the insect internal morphology describes the basic internal tracts of the salivary glands, the midgut, the male and female reproductive structures and the Malpighian tubules. This species has salivary glands of the tubular form, an ovary of the telotrophic type with three ovarioles in the right ovary and five in the left one. In the male reproductive trait was observed the presence of only one pair of accessory glands of tubular or sacs-like form. The phytophagous feeding habitat was confirmed by the observation of chlorophyll pigments in the gut of all dissected specimens. The Malpighian tubules are formed by a unique layer of cells with microvills. The description and the diagnosis of the stages from egg to adult of P. decempunctatus was also studied inclunding male reproductive organ and trait. A morfometric study of 27 morphological traits of P. decempunctatus was carried out to recognize differences between sexos and seasons in insects collected throughout a year in Viçosa, MG. Interpopulation differences were also investigated in a subsequent study with 23 populations collected collected from the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. A study of spot variations among these populations was carried out, showing the spot pattern observed on the description of type specimen and 27 more spot patterns also observed in P. decempunctatus. New occurrences for the geographic distribution were registred for this species strengthening the interelations with its host plant, S. cernuum.

Three portions of restinga forest with same physiognomic aspects were selected: restinga of Trilha para o Morro das Almas (MA), Trilha Interpretativa (TI) and Estrada para a Captação (EC). Five strata of forest were sampled in each portion: Tree, Tree/shrub, Shrub/herbaceous, Herbaceous and Lianas. Each portion was analyzed individually and subsequently were analyzed the entirely of the three portions and compared them. At Trilha para o Morro das Almas were sampled 73 species, at Trilha Interpretativa 72, at Estrada para a Captação 56 and totally sample 112, inside them 31 species were common to three portions and 46 restrict only one of them. The three portions of a forest were floristically similar, MA and TI had the highest Sørensen similarity (70,3%), and TI and EC had the less Sørensen similarity (55,5%). When compared the strata in general Tree/shrub and Shrub/herbaceous strata had the highest value of Sørensen similarity, and the Tree and Herbaceous strata had the less similarity. The highest diversity and equability were found in herbaceous strata, and the less in tree strata. The plants of the three portions had majority of species with geographic distribution in south and southeast Brazil regions, and the majority individuals and species were secondary-climax category. The portions of studied forest were in advanced stage of regeneration, and shade-tolerant species were favored. The differences between three portions of a forest were due to natural process common in tropical forests, where the substitution of one tree produce a mosaic of distinct regenerative phases at community that differ in structure and floristic composition. Differences in environment physical conditions, especially edaphic factors, and distinct anthropic interventions are responsible too.

Species ecology can be influenced by different factors at different scales. There are three approaches about the ecological differences between species: the first brings that differences result from current processes on niche characteristics (e.g. diet, time, space); the second that species differences are explained by random patterns of speciation, extinction and dispersion, the third that historical events explain the formation and composition of species in communities. This study aims to evaluate the influence of phylogenetic relationships in determining ecological characteristics in amphibians (globally) and test with that, if ecological differences between species of frogs are the result of ancient pre-existing differences or as result of current interactions. Another objective of this study is to verify if ecological, historical or current characteristics determine the size of species geographical distribution. The diet data for analysis of trophic ecology were collected from published literature. We performed a non-parametric MANOVA to test the existence of phylogenetic effects in diet shifts on frogs history. Thus, it is expected to know the main factors that allow the coexistence of anuran species. We performed a phylogenetic regression to analyze if niche breadth, body size and evolutionary age variables determine the size of the geographical distribution of amphibians in the Amazon. In the present study, new contributions to knowledge of major ecological patterns of anurans are discussed under a phylogenetic perspective / Entender a origem, manuten??o e os mecanismos que operam na biodiversidade atual s?o um dos principais objetivos da Ecologia.
