Overweight And Obesity In Canada: Understanding The Individual and Socio-environmental Determinants / Understanding The Determinants of Obesity In Urban Canada

Pouliou, Theodora 09 1900 (has links)
<p> This research examined the geographic variability as well as the individual-and neighbourhood-level determinants of overweight and obesity in Canada. Overweight and obesity represent a significant public health problem with grave implications for individuals as well as populations. Over the past two decades, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has reached epidemic proportions with the most substantial increases observed in economically developed countries. The World Health Organization indicated that globally 1.6 billion adults (age 15+) are overweight and at least 400 million adults were obese. In a Canadian context, recent data from Statistics Canada confirms that over the past twenty-five years, adult obesity rates in Canada have doubled (23% ), while childhood obesity rates have nearly tripled. </p> <p> Until recently, research has focused on biological and behavioural determinants of obesity, and currently there is a great deal of knowledge regarding the relationships between weight status and various risk factors at the individual-level (e.g. age, sex, socioeconomic deprivation, diet, physical activity). However, the majority of existing research has ignored the potential role played by the environment in the development of these conditions, despite a growing consensus that environmental and/or societal constraints may be major influences on increasing prevalence rates. </p> <p> Using data from the Canadian Community Health Surveys and the Desktop Mapping Information Technologies Incorporated spatial database, this research addressed the following objectives: (I) to examine sex-specific spatial patterns of overweight/obesity in Canada as well as investigate the presence of spatial clusters (2) to investigate the prevalence and determinants of overweight and obesity in Canada using spatial analysis and geographical information systems (GIS) and (3) to identify heterogeneities associated with the relationships between individual and socioenvironmental determinants and overweight and obesity at the individual-and community-levels. </p> <p> Results revealed marked geographical variation in overweight/obesity prevalence with higher values in the Northern and Atlantic health-regions and lower values in the Southern and Western health-regions of Canada. Significant positive spatial autocorrelation was found for both males and females, with significant clusters of high values or 'hot spots' of obesity in the Atlantic and Northern health-regions of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Results also demonstrate the important role of the built-environment after adjustment demographic, socio-economic and behavioural characteristics. With regard to the built environment measures, landuse mix and residential density were found to be significantly associated with BMI. This study also demonstrated significant differences at the area-level of analysis, supporting related research that has suggested that individual-level factors alone cannot explain variation in obesity rates across space. In particular, average dwelling value was related to BMI independently of individual-level characteristics. Ultimately, this research has demonstrated that Canadian urban environments play a small but significant role in shaping the distribution of BMI. Yet, reversing current trends will require a multifaceted public health approach where interventions are developed from the individual-to the neighbourhood-level, specifically focusing on altering obesogenic environments. </p> / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Mapa de fragilidade ambiental: conceituação e aplicação em um setor do oleoduto São Paulo - Brasília (OSBRA) / Environmental fragility map: concept and aplication in São Paulo - Brasília oil pipeline (OSBRA)

Gimenes, Filipe Biaggioni Quessada 17 May 2013 (has links)
Currently there are different definitions to the concept of environmental fragility; it complicates its application and makes difficult to compare between different methods. This work addresses the main definitions to this concept and adopts the one considered the most proper. Based in the adopted definition it was proposed a method to evaluate the environmental fragility of a study area. This method applies weights to the different attributes (physical, biotic and socioeconomic) related to the environmental fragility analysis, which are assigned using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The method also uses Geographic Information System (GIS) software to structure the database, to conduct the spatial analysis and to assign weights to the maps. The study area is a sector of the São Paulo &#8211; Brasília oil pipeline (OSBRA), covering 18.5 km length and 2 km wide (total area of 83,99 km²) and it was used a digital cartographic map at the scale of 1:10,000. Field trips were made to obtain surface observation points and to collect soil samples. Geological and geotechnical tests, mineralogical tests and chemistry analysis were conducted with the soil samples. The method application consists in generating intermediates susceptibility maps, that were combined to generate the environmental fragility map. It was important to use the AHP method, because it reduces the subjectivity of the qualitative weight assignment. The obtained results elucidate the environmental fragility concept and show the importance of the selection and weight assignment of the attributes used in the method. Moreover, the final map provided to evaluate the method sensitivity and its potential of practical application.

Percepção e quantificação das árvores na área urbana do município de São Carlos, SP / Perception and quantification of trees in the urban area of São Carlos, SP

Sabrina Mieko Viana 20 June 2013 (has links)
The trees, as one of the most meaningful elements connecting people with the nature, and the usual exclusion of this element due the competition with other urban infrastructures, may be interpreted as a symptom of inhabitants alienation from natural environment.. By considering this scenario, is important for the management improvement know the structure and distribution of the urban forests as well as comprehend how people are related with the environment and the trees, in order to know the causes and how to work for different sectors of the population. The study aimed at contributing to the knowledge expansion on indexes to quantify and analyze the Tree Canopy Cover (TCC), using as model of the city of São Carlos (SP, Brazil), as well as assess the relationship between the residents perception and the amount of TCC. Images of satellite Worldview 2 were used for quantify and analyze the distribution of TCC and the UFI. Moreover the perception of the population was surveyed by using structured questionnaires and direct observation in areas of different percentage of TCC. According to the results, even though the UFI (1,26) and the proportion of TCC (26,27%) are significant for the entire urban area, the values are not quite well distributed amongst the regions of the city. The highest values of TCC and UFI were concentrated in the north and northwest regions, while the lowest values were located in central and south areas. Excepting the universities campi (UFSCar and USP 2) and the industrial districts, the highest TCC percentage occurred in the Samambaia\'s gated community (29,6%) and the lowest in the Antenor Garcia, Cidade Aracy and President Collor neighborhoods (4,88%). Furthermore, the analysis of coverage within each region indicated the predominance of single trees or small groups, with low connectivity amongst them. The overall population recognizes benefits provided by the trees. However, attributed features such as \'dirt\', caused by fallen leaves, damaged sidewalks, safety problems related to violence and risk of tree falling, were associated by respondents as the biggest negatives points about the trees in the city.

Multicriteria analysis and GIS application in the selection of sustainable motorway corridor

Belka, Kamila January 2005 (has links)
Effects of functioning transportation infrastructure are receiving more and more environmental and social concern nowadays. Nevertheless, preliminary corridor plans are usually developed on the basis of technical and economic criteria exclusively. By the time of environmental impact assessment (EIA), which succeeds, relocation is practically impossible and only preventative measures can be applied. This paper proposes a GIS-based method of delimiting motorway corridor and integrating social, environmental and economic factors into the early stages of planning. Multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques are used to assess all possible alternatives. GIS-held weighted shortest path algorithm enables to locate the corridor. The evaluation criteria are exemplary. They include nature conservation, buildings, forests and agricultural resources, and soils. Resulting evaluation surface is divided into a grid of cells, which are assigned suitability scores derived from all evaluation criteria. Subsequently, a set of adjacent cells connecting two pre-specified points is traced by the least-cost path algorithm. The best alternative has a lowest total value of suitability scores. As a result, the proposed motorway corridor is routed from origin to destination. It is afterwards compared with an alternative derived by traditional planning procedures. Concluding remarks are that the location criteria need to be adjusted to meet construction requirements as well as analysis process to be automated. Nevertheless, the geographic information system and the embedded shortest path algorithm proved to be well suited for preliminary corridor location analysis. Future research directions are sketched.

Elaboração de carta de susceptibilidade à erosão das bacias dos rios Araraquara e Cubatão-SP, escala 1:50.000 / Elaboration of the erosion susceptibility map of the Araraquara and Cubatão river basins - SP, scale 1:50.000

Leonardo Luiz Lyrio da Silveira 27 May 2002 (has links)
In this present work many environmental attributes were identified, in order to create a soil erosion susceptibility chart (1:50.000 scale) for the Cubatão and Araraquara hydrographic basin, which in turn, are part of the greater Pardo river basin. These attributes were bedrock classification, unconsolidated materials, slope and land use. The soil erosion susceptibility chart was meant to help the land use management of that particular region by identifying areas with different soil erosion vulnerability. This study was leaded following conceptual and methodological bases from the traditional engineering geological mapping approach. Geographical information system (GIS) were applied to analyze satellite images for a specific utilization, as well as for dealing with the environmental data, obtained along all the work stages. It was intended also to provide a better understanding of the property called erodibility and to identify which of the unconsolidated material attributes really contributes to its erosion.
