Performing Protest in Cross-Cultural Spaces: Paul Robeson and Othello

Sawyer, Robert 01 September 2017 (has links)
When the famous African-American actor and singer Paul Robeson played the lead in Shakespeare's Othello in London in 1930, tickets were in high demand during the production's first week. The critical response, however, was less positive, although the reviews unanimously praised his bass-baritone delivery. When Robeson again played Othello on Broadway thirteen years later, critics praised not only his voice but also his acting, the drama running for 296 performances. My argument concerning Robeson uses elements first noted by Henri Lefebvre in his seminal work, The Production of Space, while I also draw on Paul Connerton's work on commemorative practices. Using spatial and memorial theories as a backdrop for examining his two portrayals, I suggest that Robeson's nascent geopolitical awareness following the 1930 production, combined with his already celebrated musical voice, allowed him to perform the role more dramatically in 1943.

Inscape, the inshape of the trinity : a genetic analysis of Gerard Manley Hopkins' "God's Grandeur" and "The Windhover"

Keller, Sarah 24 April 2018 (has links)
The poetic theories of inscape and sprung rhythm developed by British poet Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-89) have baffled critics for years. Most critics have relied upon the published poems for clues to their significance. This study advances the analysis further by revealing the genesis of the theory of inscape to be Hopkins’ undergraduate notes on the pre-Socratic philosopher Parmenides and is influenced by commentaries on Parmenides’ work “On Nature.” A study of Hopkins’ letters to fellow poets Robert Bridges and Richard Watson Dixon reveals that sprung rhythm emanates from his overarching theory of inscape; sprung rhythm is, thus, the application of inscape to the metrical patterns of poetry. After determining a working definition of both poetic theories, this study applies these terms to the manuscripts to determine to what extent Hopkins’ adhered to and developed the theories when writing two of his canonical poems: “God’s Grandeur” and “The Windhover.” It thus fits in the field of genetic criticism, a critical approach developed in France and centered at the Institut des Textes et Manuscrits Modernes (ITEM). Most analyses conducted have thus been done on French works and to prose. Deletions, additions, and substitutions, as well as the consistencies from one version to another, reveal Hopkins’ priorities as he strove to attain the desired effect. Therefore, this study endeavours to unveil the meaning of Hopkins’ poetic theories by determining their geneses and their application to two of his best known poems, “God’s Grandeur” and “The Windhover, ” through the practice of genetic analysis. It contributes to genetic criticism in applying it to works written in the English language and to poetry rather than prose. The hope is to renew interest in Hopkins as a viable poet to study and to incite further appreciation in his prowess as both poetic theorist and poet.

The church service as the centre of a missional congregation developing a second church service as a building block for a future social form of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Württemberg, Germany

Beck, Willi, M.Th. 31 January 2008 (has links)
Summary in German and English / Zusammenfassung Im schleichenden Rückgang gemeindlichen Lebens wird eine anhaltende Inkulturationskrise sichtbar. Summary English The gradual deterioration of congregational life is unveiling an ongoing inculturation crisis. With its milieu constricting presence, the church is currently not able to enter into the multifaceted social environments in Germany. This paper represents a contribution to the discussion concerning our joint search of the church's future social form in our post-modern society. Departing from the major significance of the church service as the centre of the congregation, it is argued that future development of the church can only take place from within the church service. This is especially true if it is intended as congregational development by the brothers and sisters, and not as programme or event. The boom of second church services we have been observing since the beginning of the 1990s could become a missionary-strategic starting point in order to reach a sociologically diversified population. Plural church service concepts as a basic approach to church planting become the linchpin of a future, necessarily multioptional and culturally relevant social form of church. In a church with manifold church service concepts, the question of Christian unity is being asked anew and discussed as a plural form of expression. / Christian Spirituality Church History and Missiology / M. Kniha Píseň písní jako odpověď na Kazatelovu marnost / The Book Song of Songs as an Answer to Qohelet's Vanity

FILIPOVÁ, Anna January 2019 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with, in the words of Song of Songs, finding an appropriate answer to Qohelet's vanity - vanity of a human life and things that inherently come with it, as Qohelet himself proclaims in his book. The first chapter introduces the Book of Qohelet and aims to capture the main themes of vanity and transience, while also providing the ways out from this situation, as presented by Qohelet. The second chapter introduces the reader to the Song of Songs book while also describing its content which concerns the interpretation of love between a man and a woman. The third chapter brings forward efforts of the author and the main themes and conclusions of the book are analysed. This allows - in the conclusion of this thesis - to answer the question of whether the love in the Songs of Songs is a possible answer to Qoheleth's vanity - the transience of a human life, as brought out by Qohelet in his work.

L'EPISCOPATO ITALIANO E LA GRANDE GUERRA: DISCORSO PUBBLICO E DISCORSO INTERNO (1914-1918) / The Italian Bishops and the Great War. Public Discourse and Discourse inside the Church (1914-1918)

MALPENSA, MARCELLO 26 March 2010 (has links)
Until today, the historiography concerning the attitude of Italian bishops during the First World War dealt with the subject from essentially a political perspective, focused on bishops' commitment to patriotic ideals and the level of support for the war. This research takes into account, on the one hand, the analysis of the pastoral discourse made publicly by the Italian bishops about and during the «Great War», and on the other hand, the analysis of the discourse inside of the church hierarchy addressed both downwards (to priest-soldiers and fighting seminarists) and upwards (to the Holy See). Thus, the actual explanatory categories by which the war-event was understood and judged by bishops are revealed. The picture that emerges is heterogeneous: beyond patriotic rhetoric, the most dominant finding is represented by providential reading of the conflict. By attaching a redemptive meaning to death from fighting for one's country, it proved to be a decisive factor in legitimising the participation of the faithful. The analysis of the correspondence between the bishops and fighting seminarists, and between the bishops and the Holy See demonstrates the existence of different tones and sensibilities. Although worth recording, they do not seem to change the overall picture that the public discourse displays.

Analýza biblické důvěry ve světě Pentateuchu / Analysis of the Biblical Trust in the World of Pentateuch

Matějka, Miroslav Pacifik January 2011 (has links)
This Study elaborates the topic of Biblical Trust in the World of Pentateuch. This trust is understood as to rely in a purely subjective way on a word or instruction of some person. In case of God it frequently means a conviction that some humanly unrealizable promises are to be fulfilled. Such attitude secures to the trusting person merits before God. Rely on God is often understood in a confrontational way as opposite to the life of unbelievers. Trust requires courage to make leap in the dark. Meanwhile it is always right to trust in God, trust in a human person is in Pentateuch interpreted as fool. But if the respective man is the spokesman of God, the eventual mistrust is seen as an attack against God himself. In case of God's revelation trust becomes duty. If there is any doubt people can ask some sign of authenticity for the presented God's will. But if the will is known, eventual mistrust is interpreted as disobedience and follows a severe punishment. The same trust which belongs to God is required also for his prophet and for the Law proclaimed in the God's name. If somebody relies on himself in sense of exaggerated self-confidence which does not count on God, it is understood as a crime. In the same manner is valuated the trust directed towards the pagan divinities.

Radikale en gedifferensieerde universumgerigte pentekostalisme

Cordier, Antonie 11 1900 (has links)
In this research a totally new Radical and Differentiated Universal-directed approach to theology, pneumatologyand particularly the old classical pentecostalism's narrow particularistically and so called unique elitistic model of Spiritbatism is critically investigated on theological-philosophical levels. Though the moderner neo-pentecostalistic or rather charismatic rendering of classical pentecostalism receives attention to serve as criterion for comparison, the main focus is on classical pentecostalism. Naturally the different models of Spiritbaptism comes pertinently on the table. And in the light of this, our study propose a brand new globalistic model for Spiritbaptism, namely the RDU-Spiritbaptism-mode lwhich signifies a Radical and Differentiated Universal-directed model of Spiritbaptism. This new RDU-Spiritbaptism-model also logically implies a radical revolutionary paradigmshift and tum-about in the old classical Spiritbaptism perspectives. This inevitably also implies a widening of the theological-scientific field and the interrelatedness thereof with all theological and non-theological sciences and professions, with all ecclesiological and non-ecclesiological scopes, with all religious and non-religious circles, as well as all theoretical and praxiological inclinations. Confinement of territory is thus also imperatively essential and indispensable. The centrifical narrowing of the studyscope handles naturally only the essential theological-philosophical and praxiological impacts, not only on the old classical pentecostalism, but also on all theologies and all philosophies and all sciences which are all transformed in a coherent holistically interconnected fashion to one great universal whole / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D.
