Quand la voix de Dieu fait appel : l'exemple de Saint Augustin / When God’s voice makes call : the example of Saint Augustin

Jeandel, Jessica 17 December 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the subjective phenomenon that is the mystic subject religious conversion's, using the psychoanalitic theory and more particulary thanks to concepts such as the invocatory drive and the voice. From the book « Confessions » of Saint Augustin, we are going to analyze how God's call affected him in his religious conversion. Indeed, in this work he testifes to the search for his faith in God, but also, to his conversion by wondering about the major riddles of his existence. For that purpose, we wonder about God's voice statuts and about the fantastical place that the divine figure occupies for Saint Augustin.Actually, the voice of Lord seems to print it self over of the primal repression. It is the unconscious cause of desire and it seems to impose itself as the « a » object. This divine voice would be covering the primal repression issue. It is not heared though the ear, it is experienced. It is a source of enjoyement, classified as an archaïc enjoyement.

Work: An Eschatological Imperative

Bates, Paul Kevin 27 March 2014 (has links)
<p> This thesis asserts an eschatological perspective that the end of days will come not in apocalyptic destruction, but in transformation. With this theological foundation in view, this thesis draws a deep spiritual purpose in our working lives. This spiritual purpose is God's summons to us to dedicate our vocations to service to the kingdom, now and in preparation for the new creation. This spiritual orientation is the grounding for a critical understanding of a lifetime of work wherein we will strive unceasingly to reflect the image of Christ in our methods and in our demeanour in the workplace. We seek personal sanctification as we respond to God's vocational summons to us.</p> <p> This thesis draws a theology of work, founded in the eschatological dimension of transformatio mundi. Work, while often challenging, is not our punishment for Adam's sin. Work is the expression of our essential being. Work is our loving response, in the deepest ethical way, to God's creation. Indeed, this thesis presents the perspective that our daily work is far more than personal and societal economic growth and security. Indeed, this thesis argues that our daily work is more than self-actualization. This thesis asserts that, when it is inspired and equipped by God through the Holy Spirit, our daily labours are not only pleasing to God, but they hold a significant and important eschatological purpose. This thesis asserts the centrality of our work as stewardship of God's resources, and therefore is of critical importance to the pastoral activities of the church.</p> / Thesis / Master of Theological Studies (MTS)

Axiological Stances: Normative, Psychological, and Divine

Troy Daniel Seagraves (18284311) 01 April 2024 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">This dissertation explores intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts that result from differing axiological stances. A stance is one’s orientation towards a subject and one’s axiological stance is one’s orientation towards what they take to be valuable. An axiological stance also influences how one responds to practical reasons. Stances currently enjoy some attention in epistemology and the philosophy of science, but I provide a novel treatment of stances in the practical domain. Comprised of three chapters, this dissertation explores the psychological and normative contributions of one’s stances in normative ethics, then extends this work to the philosophy of religion. In chapter one, I unpack the psychological contribution of axiological stances. I introduce the concept of an axiological stance in the context of the debate surrounding “hard choices,” arguing that an intrapersonal conflict of axiological stances explains the characteristic difficulty of hard choices. In chapter two, I explore the normative side of axiological stances, drawing from Peter Winch. While Winch has been associated with various forms of relativism, I suggest that he is better understood as defending a moral analog to epistemic permissivism. In this chapter, I suggest that a plausible version of his view is an axiological stance permissivism where an axiological stance can modify the weights of one’s normative reasons. Lastly, in chapter three, I address aspects of God’s practical life that may comprise an axiological stance. The normative import of these aspects, I argue, provide a model of God’s practical life that is not objectionably robotic. On such a model, God has some control over what his weightiest reasons are.</p>

In pursuit of an alternative to the public diffusion of the Reformed Christian faith, limited by the officialdom of the Catholic Church, the Presbyterian missionaries founded the Evangelical Press Newspaper (1864-1892), the first Protestant newspaper in circulation in Brazil. With the first essay located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, under the leadership of Presbyterian pioneer Ashbel Green Simonton, the newspaper extended its reach to the places where Presbyterianism founded its missions. It had as main axis of distribution the province of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The writing ranged between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In order to understand the historical aspects of religious hope in the formation of the Presbyterian Church in Brazil, we will investigate how the Evangelical Press Journal presented the metaphorical concept of the "Kingdom of God" to its readers. For this, we will consider the roles attributed to God and man, the State and the Church, the individual and the family in the process of expansion of the “Kingdom of God” and the progress in the Brazilian Empire and in the following wars: Secession, Paraguay and the Italian Risorgimento.

Une Application Des N-Univers A L'argument De L'apocalypse Et Au Paradoxe De Goodman

Franceschi, Paul 11 1900 (has links)
Several philosophical problems are based on an analogy between a real situation and a probabilistic model. Such problems are based on urn analogies. The present dissertation aims to describe and implement a methodology oriented towards the resolution of philosophical problems based on an urn analogy. This methodology is based on the use of the n-universes. To this end, I describe first the n-universes in a detailed way. I also discuss the difficulties of the theory of n-universes related to the demultiplication of the criteria and to the relation one/many between the objects and a given criterion. On the one hand, I present an application of the framework of n-universes to the Doomsday argument and to the problems recently appeared in the literature in keeping with the Doomsday argument. My concern is also with showing how the application of the framework of n-universes to several problems and thought experiments related to the Doomsday argument helps clarifying the problem data and making disappear the associated ambiguity. I present then an analysis of the following problems related to the Doomsday argument: the two urn case, God's Coin Toss, the Sleeping Beauty Problem, the Presumptuous Philosopher, Lazy Adam, and the Shooting-Room Paradox. I present lastly a solution to the Doomsday argument, based on a third route, by contrast to two types of solutions classically described. On the other hand, I present an application of the framework of n-universes to Goodman's paradox. I replace first Goodman's statement in the framework of n-universes. I propose then a solution to the paradox, based on a distinction between two different modelizations of Goodman's statement in two structurally different n-universes.

Les expéditions au pays de Pount sous la XVIIIe dynastie égyptienne : essai de compréhension du rôle idéologique des expéditions « commerciales » / The Egyptian Expeditions to the Land of Punt under the 18th Dynasty : an Attempt to Understand the Ideological Significance of the “Commercial” Missions

Taterka, Filip 16 January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the dissertation is to analyse the religious and ideological significance of the ancient Egyptian Punt expeditions, particularly in the 18th dynasty. In the first part (chapters 1-4) the sources concerning the ancient Egyptian Punt expeditions as well as the products imported to Egypt in their result were discussed in detail. Although the pre-eminence is given to the 18th dynasty sources, documents from other periods were also included in the analysis. The second part (chapters 5-8) constitutes a synthesis of the conclusions drawn in result of the analysis of the sources of the first part. Therefore, the author discusses various toponyms related to the land of Punt (chapter 5), the problem of Punt’s exact location (chapter 6), the character of the Punt expeditions in comparison with other foreign missions (chapter 7) as well as various links between the land of Punt and Egyptian religion and ideology of kingship (chapter 8). The author concludes that the land of Punt played an important role in the Egyptian ideology of kingship being especially associated with the sun-god as well as with the goddess Hathor. Puntite products were crucial for both royal and private funerary cult as well as for the divine cult carried out in the temples. This is why the organisation of a Punt expedition was a duty of the Egyptian king, who, according to Egyptian beliefs, was obeying a direct order of the sun-god. Moreover, in various periods we may observe a wish to re-establish the contacts with Punt in order to restore the natural order of things after a period of crisis, which is especially visible in the reign of Hatshepsut of the 18th dynasty.

Boží obraz u Řehoře z Nyssy / God's Image in Gregory of Nyssa

Marunová, Magdalena January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this work is to introduce Gregory of Nyssa's doctrine of man as the image of God, based especially on his work Περ κατασκευ ς νθρώπουὶ ῆ ἀ (De hominis opificio). In his work Gregory created quite a systematic anthropological treatise based on Stoic sources, Biblical interpretations inspired by Philo of Alexandria and Origen, as well as on ancient medicine. In contrast to the ancient philosophical school views concerning human being, Gregory refuses the parallel of man as a small world and says that the dignity of man consists not in being similar to the created world, but to the Creator. There are many attributes that constitute human similarity to God, but especially due to the incomprehensibility man is the image of God. The incomprehensibility consists in human mind (νο ςῦ ) in which the human likeness to God can most apparently be recognized. It cannot be placed anywhere in the body and the connection between mind and body is, according to Gregory, unspeakable: the mind does not reside in any particular part of the body, but yet it acts in and is influenced by the whole body. The image of God is the whole mankind, from the first up to the last created human being. When the planned number of souls is completed, the time and everything that happens in time will come to an end. In the...
