L'émotion en partage : approche anthropologique d'une musique tsigane de Roumanie / Shared Emotions : an ethnomusicological study of a Romanian Gypsy village

Bonini Baraldi, Filippo 24 September 2010 (has links)
This study explores musical emotion from an anthropological perspective. It rests upon two central hypotheses. First, music provides a particularly clear way of understanding how emotions function within a given society. Conversely, an ethnography focused on affects helps us uncover the meanings that community members ascribe to their music.According to the Gypsies of the small central central-Transylvanian villlage of Ceuaá, "music is good when it makes tou cry". This expression is not merely metaphorical: at weddings (Gypsy or otherwise), funerals, baptisms, and other family celebrations, musicians and listeners alike often cry during a performance. Two conclusions may be drawn from an investigation of these musical tears. On the one hand, a tri-partite model emerges of how musical emotion is produced: professional poeisis, whose goal is to move the customers to tears; expression during spontaneous celebrations among Gypsies, in which the musicians themselves cry while playing; and the sharing that takes place during funerals, in which "those who are close" (neamuri) to the deceased person affectively draw in "those who are distant" (străini). On the other hand, three constants of musical emotion are made apparent : 1) the musical aesthetics of grief (jale); 2) associations between melodies and specific persons and 3) and a universal human quality (milă, ‘compassion’, ‘pity’) that Gypsies consider to be proper to their culture. All of these findings are brought under a theoretical lens, with the end of clarifying the notion of empathy (which is perhaps the best all-around translation of milă) and how it functions in musical practice.

To that end, I analyze both the social relations between Gypsies and non-gypsies community, as it is from the contact that the social boundaries are delineated, as the discourses and social representations that are used to qualify them from stigma. So, I found that grounded in the notion of family, gypsies are seen as a group, searching the history / past nomadic origing and blood common elements that underlie its condition, and the language a cultural trait that makes it possible to establish objective distinctions among gypsies and other community residentes, becoming thus a diacritical mark.

Abstract: To search the characteristics of gypsy culture is always an ambitious task since it brings a variety of meaning and possibilities for interpretation for it is considered exotic, artistic, religious, among other. This research, initially, sought to focus only one of its aspects: the gypsy body as a social construction which by expressing itself brings out memories. However, as poetry teaches us, there are no pre-paths... The path is to walk. Gypsies, a complex unit, ethnic mosaic. Rhythms and images. Materiality and meaning. Thus, the body-memory was addressed in the complex gypsy universe. The chapters of this work flourished and grew in the light of such complexity of the gypsy people that is completely impossible to be fragmented. In this context, the central object of analysis, along the route of study and research, went beyond the body-memory, making it necessary deepening the gipsy ethos [1}, their stories, memories, beliefs and in particular their greatest belief: Sara Kali. In order to achieve this, a harmonious constellation was blended in presenting the Gypsies - free of stereotypes (First Chapter). Gypsies pilgrims who gather their voices, even belonging to different tribes: many voices in one only voice, many worlds within the same world - the myth of Kali Sara (Second Chapter). At last, what was once the beginning: gypsies who write and rewrite the text of their own existence through the ritual of poetry and dance (Third Chapter). Incorporated into the area of Visual Anthropology and driven by the intention of making photographic images and reports of some social actors, the subject of reflection and point of departure and arrival of the whole process of formation of Roma identity, this study aimed to demonstrate not only the cultural elements of Roma, that can be nearer or farther from its own predominant culture, but we care to verify how they organize their memoirs printed in their bodies because, even around the world, they present themselves as a group with marked identity. / Doutorado / Doutor em Multimeios

The objective of this study was to (re) learn the culture of this community, recording the by observing their customs, reports and interviews. Our main purpose is the formalization and the inclusion of the culture of Trinity Roma to resume the Field School, located in Vila Pai Eterno and a significant portion of gypsy pupils. Initially, we present the gypsy, its history, origin and identity. Following, we carry on about the gypsy in Brazil and Trindade, reflecting about their culture, traditions and the relationship with the field school. When considering the inclusion relevant factor and from the perspective of cultural diversity, we realize that despite the school not refuse to effect the registration of gypsy either favors its culture, creating a partial character of inclusion. We elect the methodologies of participant research and Ethnography, as both prioritize techniques that allow to know the object through unwritten testimonies, dialogue with other written sources. To make an effective teaching practice and promotes socialization and dialogue with the cultural diversity present in school, we analyze the new Curriculum Guidelines National General for Basic Education (BRASIL, 2010a), the National Curricular Parameters (PCN), the School Rules and the political-pedagogical project of the school field, as well as other documents such as the Law of Directives and Bases (LDB), which allow the school to build their curriculum to meet local specificities, prioritizing multiculturalism. As immediate educational products linked to our studies, we propose texts that present the origin of the Roma, teaching sequence and glossary of terms and expressions Roma. For socializing the results, it is proposed to present the final work to other public schools in Trindade.

The world is going: an ethnography of Calon and its relations with the Brazilians

Florencia Ferrari 11 June 2010 (has links)
This dissertation is an ethnographic account of a Calon Gypsy kinship network that spreads throughout the state of São Paulo, in Brazil. The aim of this work is to understand how these Calon live and create sociality out of a Brazilian world. A fundamental category differentiates Calon from gadje (non Gypsies): vergonha (shame) - a moral value that organizes ideas of purity and impurity, anchored in the female body. In order to make oneself Calon one must produce and show shame, in an ongoing process of differentiation from the gadje. The thesis explores native categories of travel, language, being active, being supported, as well as conceptualizations of time and space, that inform how Calon create sociality among us, the gadjes.

Vliv Rozsudku D.H. a ostatní proti České republice na změnu školského zákona a školskou praxi / Effect of verdikt D.H. and others against Czech republic on change of educational law and educational practice

Ondráková, Helena January 2016 (has links)
The diploma deals with an analytic evaluation of The European Court of Human Rights adjudication in the matter of D.H. and others versus the Czech Republic. The aim is to ascertain how this verdict has influenced school legislation and the educational practice. The research focuses on discovering whether the Czech Republic has been fulfilling the obligations established by the European Court, and mapping the consequences of the verdict on the practices of the involved parties, which are practical schools, school consultency facilities and the Czech School Inspectorate. The result is a comprehensive description of the steps which the government has made towards eliminating discrimination of Romany pupils in the education system. Based on the foundings, it can be stated that in the upcoming future there should not be any occurences of discrimination of pupils being put to practical schools.

On the margins of the states : contesting Gypsyness and belonging in the Slovak-Ukrainian-Hungarian borderlands and in selected migration contexts

Grill, Jan January 2012 (has links)
This thesis investigates the transnational migration of Slovakian Roma from the eastern borderlands of the European Union to Great Britain. Based on more than two years of ethnographic fieldwork in the village of Tarkovce and in several British cities, this study examines concrete pathways through which Roma come to migrate and experience their movement. For Tarkovce Roma, the most recent migration opportunity offers a potential means to carve out a sense of a viable life and of autonomy amidst the oppressive circumstances and asymmetrical relations they experience with non-Roma dominant groups and non-related Roma. I focus on Tarkovce Roma strivings for existential mobility, which condition their physical movement to the place of destination, and on their hopes for upward socio-economic mobility. I argue that migration enables Roma to contest and re-negotiate the hegemonic racial and social categories which historically place them at the bottom of social hierarchies. The thesis explores the unevenly distributed possibilities and complex inequalities that Tarkovce Roma encounter on their journeys towards realising their hopes in migration. I situate these differences within the daily sociability of Tarkovce Roma, intense webs of kinship and friendship ties, and key concepts of ‘soft hearts' and ‘heaviness.' I describe how Roma migrants come to occupy one of the most vulnerable positions in the British labour market and how they simultaneously, and constantly, search for other ways of making ‘big money.' Finally, I address questions of categorisations, in particular the internal differentiations between Roma, as well as the transformation that many Roma migrants encounter in British cities, from initial ‘invisibility' to ‘visibility'. By focusing on one particular neighbourhood in Glasgow, I analyse the shifting forms of ethno-cultural categorisations that mark Roma/Gypsy difference.
