Characteristics of western dietary pattern and its association with media exposure in two generations of Hong Kong Chinese women. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collectionJanuary 2010 (has links)
2)Qualitative study: Three areas were discussed: i) Generational differences in dietary practices were apparent and it was attributable to the discrepancies in the food environment during childhood, attitudes towards family meals, and practices of regular meal schedules between generations; ii) Mothers were influential but did not recognize their influences on their adult daughters' diet. Ignorance of the importance of diet-health relationship in young adulthood was observed; iii) Effects of media food promotions were apparent in the presence of Westernized food environment and reduced family size. Health and diet information in the media induced both positive and negative effects on the dietary behaviours of Chinese women. / Background: Studies on the characteristics associated with the Western dietary pattern (DP) in Asia are limited. Understanding the family DP resemblance in Asia is of public health importance because of the possible beneficial effects of intergenerational transfer of traditional plant-based Asian diet. Studies about media influence on dietary behaviours in Asia are few and none studied the effects on the overall DP. / Conclusion: There is an intergenerational association for practicing Western DP within family. Mothers were influential in adult daughters' dietary intakes, through modelling and family meals. A dose-response relationship exists between the practice of Western DP and media exposure in Chinese women. Public health strategies should consider promotion of family meals and empowerment of women on quick and healthy cooking skills as long-term approaches for family health promotion and obesity prevention. Policy evaluation of food or food-related advertising standards is necessary. / Keywords: mother, daughter, dietary pattern, media exposure, family meal, Western, TV viewing / Methods: This thesis composes two studies as follows: 1)a cross-sectional study on Western DP and media exposure; 2)a qualitative study on media influences on dietary practices. / Objective: This study aims to examine the dietary and individual characteristics associated with Western DP, investigate the association between the practice of Western DP and media exposure, and qualitatively assess how media and other factors influence the dietary practices in two generations of Chinese women. / Results: 1)Cross-sectional study: Western DP was characterised by higher intakes of meat (red, processed, poultry), fast foods, seafood, energy-dense foods (e.g. high-fat dairy, cakes and snacks), eggs, energy, fat, and dietary cholesterol. Daughters had a higher Western DP score than their mother. Western DP score was positively associated with the time spent on total media exposure and years living in Hong Kong for mothers, and with the time spent on TV viewing, mother's Western DP score, and smoking status for daughters. Western DP score was positively associated with the prevalence odds of being overweight and negatively associated with the frequency of family meals for both mothers and daughters. / The cross-sectional study recruited 207 (103 mothers, 104 daughters) community-based women from a longitudinal study. Dietary intake was quantified by an interviewer-administered diet history questionnaire. A self-reported questionnaire assessed the media (newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and leisure-time internet use) and other exposures (demographics, leisure-time physical activities, and lifestyles). Anthropometric data are measured. Two major DPs (Western and prudent) were identified using principal component analysis. Generation-specific factors associated with DPs were identified by multiple linear regression analyses adjusted for age and energy intake. / The qualitative study enrolled 22 mothers and 13 daughters from the same study population for semi-structured in-depth interviews. Themes were identified corresponding to the environmental levels described by the Ecological Model, with quotations supported. The final themes were evaluated by participant validation. / Lee, Suk Yin Roselle. / Adviser: Suzanne C Ho. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-02, Section: B, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 222-250). / Electronic reproduction. Práticas alimentares de crianças menores de dois anos de idade em Guarapuava-PR: experiências do cotidiano / Feeding practices of children aged under 2 years in Guarapuava-PR: experience in their daily life.Chuproski, Paula 06 March 2009 (has links)
The maternal feeding practices are one of the essential factors for the children\'s right nutritional state as well as for enhancing their physical development. However, they are influenced by the socioeconomical background, the maternal schooling, the access to health public services and by the values and beliefs of the home environment. This work aims to depict the feeding practices of children under 2 years and who have low weight and height for their age. The survey was carried out through observation in Health Units as well as through the analysis of accounts about undernourished children and their feeding. An investigative and descriptive study with a qualitative research was undertaken in order to obtain more detailed and more accurate information about the people who were being investigated and also to have a look at the maternal experience in daily life. This approach was carried out in the City of Guarapuava-PR and the people who joined in it were eight children whose age group was from 6 to 24 months of age and their mothers. The investigation techniques used were the participant observation and semi-structured interviews and, from the thematic analysis, the research intends to seize the significant structures connected with the feeding practices observed and with the maternal reports, ranking them in four subjects: The children and mothers studied, The children\'s feeding in their home\'s daily life, The feeding during the childhood in the family and social circle, The child\'s health care. It was possible to understand the home environment and the surroundings features; to have information on the breastfeeding story, on the introduction of complementary food, as well as on the baby\'s feeding highlighting who prepares it, what is prepared, how it is prepared, the time when it is prepared, the routines and places. The study also enabled to know about the family\'s feeding pointing out how it is different from the child\'s feeding and about the social situation of the families, especially when it is related to the availability of food in the residences, about the social benefit plans people got; furthermore it was possible to check aspects linked with the interaction among the mothers and the children during the feeding, the mother\'s care and awareness of the children\'s health and nutritional condition. It was noted that the children\'s diet was fairly routine with a prevailing consumption of milk for breakfast; snacks and basic food like rice, beans, pasta, potato and sometimes meat for lunch; vegetable and fruit were hardly ever consumed. From this study one is able to realize that the child\'s nutritional condition is connected with many aspects related to the breast-feeding, the introduction of complementary food in the appropriate age, the correct quantity and quality in feeding, the hygiene, the family\'s social situation, the social benefit plans and comprehensive government\'s policies, ordinary cares for the health. Families bring values from their background that not always follow practices recommended by National and International Organizations on children\'s daily cares for the health. It may be useful to health care professionals to know the surroundings where these families live, their life situation, values and beliefs so that it will be easier to establish healthy diet habits and to treat nutritional disorders. This approach is a reality inside a context and if it is shared it can help to have a broader look at the family\'s and at the kids\' health.

The Orchidaceae, easily recognized by the modified aspect of their flowers, comprises more than 20,000 cosmopolitan species distributed in five subfamilies. The Zygopetalinae subtribe is a typically neotropical group included in the Epidendroideae subfamily and comprises around 30 genera and 418 species of varied vegetative habit. Aiming to complement the information about the structure of the vegetative organs of the representatives of this subtribe, the anatomy of roots, stems and leaves of some Brazilian taxa, may of them of uncertain and little known taxonomic position under the anatomical point of view, were studied. Comparing the results obtained with the ones described for the other representatives of the same subtribe, an anatomical uniformity among the organs of the Brazilian species and the ones previously studied was observed corroborating the inclusion of Zygopetalinae in the Cymbidieae monofiletic tribe. It was also observed an uniformity in the anatomical characteristics, within the genera, indicating that many aspects can be useful in the systematic analysis of the subtribe

The Relationship Between Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms and Nicotine Habits in PilotsJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: Nicotine and tobacco use, whether it be through cigarette smoking or other devices, creates negative health conditions in pilots. The literature that was reviewed pertained to nicotine withdrawal symptoms and their negative impact on pilot performance. There have been studies conducted in order to explore how these symptoms impact pilot performance using cigarettes as the only nicotine device and does not specify the nicotine levels or the frequency of use. This thesis extends this work to examine the relationship between the nicotine withdrawal symptoms and the nicotine behaviors of pilots. It was hypothesized that the extent of withdrawal symptoms may differ by device and by nicotine levels and frequency of use, with higher levels and more frequent use being associated with more severe withdrawal symptoms. These behaviors included the device they use to take nicotine whether it be cigarettes, vaporizers, e-cigarettes, or smokeless tobacco. The behaviors also included exploration of how nicotine levels relate to withdrawal symptoms whether the nicotine level is as low as 3mg or high as 36mg. The last relationship that was explored was that between the withdrawal symptoms presented in pilots and how often they used nicotine, whether it be often as every day or less frequent as 1-2 times a year. It was found that there is no statistical relationship between nicotine withdrawal symptoms and the nicotine habits such as device used, nicotine level used, and frequency of use. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Engineering 2019

Feeding Habits and Reproduction of Three Sympatric Lizard Species from West-Central UtahAndre, John B. 01 May 1978 (has links)
The feeding habits and reproduction of Utastansburiana, Crotaphytus collaris and Cnemidophorus tigris during spring and summer 1976 are described. Feeding habits are expressed in percent total number and volume of prey items and frequency of occurrence of each prey category . Importance Values are also calculated. These values better i llustrate the feeding habits of the lizard species than either percent total number and volume and frequency of prey category occurrence.
Lizards consume a variety of food items throughout the growing season. Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Orthoptera and Arachnida are the major prey categories of Q. s t ansburiana . The major prey categories of C. collaris and C. tigris are Orthoptera, Hymenoptera and Coleoptera and Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Arachnida, respectively.
Dietary overlap between species and food species diversities (numbers and volume) are also used to illustrate the feeding habits. Reproduction is assessed by clutch size and frequency . Clutch size of Q. stansburiana , f· collaris and f· tigris is 2.99, 5.38 and 3.07, respectively. All species laid one clutch of eggs in 1976.

Longitudinal Effects of Habit-breaking Appliances on Tongue and Dento-alveolar Relations and Speech in Children with Oral HabitsSuwwan, Ihab 25 July 2008 (has links)
A longitudinal pilot study to compare, in children with reduced overbite malocclusions associated with oral habits (finger-sucking and tongue-thrusting), the effects of the experimental Myofunctional Trainer (MFT; Myofunctional Research Co.) and the conventional Bluegrass appliance (BG) on dento-alveolar relations, tongue position, and on speech. Methods: The experimental group received the MFT appliance while the control group received the BG appliance. Dento-alveolar changes were assessed by cephalometry and study models. Longitudinal midsagittal 2-dimensional B-mode ultrasound scans of the tongue surface were performed to determine tongue position. Speech acceptability tests were also performed. Results & Conclusions: The BG appliance was successful in breaking the finger-sucking habit. The MFT appliance showed only partial success which could be attributed to lack of compliance. At the end of treatment, the open bite was reduced in both groups due to dento-alveolar changes. The BG appliance had a deleterious effect on speech acceptability while in place, while there was no such effect with the MFT appliance.
