Abraham Maslow's concept of self actualizaton as illustrated in the life of Jesus

Chu, Peter Minh Quang 01 January 1978 (has links) (PDF)
How to be authentic to the self is possibly the main goal of all human efforts. Self-actualization is an urgent and important problem because it is the last stage in shaping a man's personality. In self-actualization, a person becomes more fully developed, more fully mature, indeed, a more complete person by fully actualizing his potentialities. In self actualization, the person lives what he potentially and really is.

Nonparametric Methods for Measuring Conditional Dependence, Multi-Sample Dissimilarity, and Testing for Symmetry

Huang, Zhen January 2024 (has links)
We describe new nonparametric methods for (i) quantifying conditional dependence, (ii) quantifying multi-sample dissimilarity, and (iii) testing multivariate symmetry. In the first part of the thesis, we propose a kernel partial correlation (KPC) to quantify conditional dependence, and a kernel measure of dissimilarity between multiple distributions (KMD) to quantify the difference between multiple distributions. These two measures are both deterministic numbers between 0 and 1, with 0 and 1 corresponding to the two extreme cases --- KPC is 0 if and only if perfect conditional dependence holds, and 1 if and only if there is a conditional functional relationship; while KMD is 0 if and only if all the distributions that are compared are equal, and 1 if and only if these distributions are mutually singular. Both KPC and KMD can be estimated consistently using a computationally efficient graph-based method (including k-nearest neighbor graph and minimum spanning tree). For applications, KPC can be used to develop a model-free variable selection algorithm. This algorithm is provably consistent under sparsity assumptions, and shows superior performance in practice compared to existing procedures. KMD can be used to design an easily implementable test for the equality of multiple distributions, which is consistent against all alternatives where at least two distributions are not equal. A problem closely related to multi-sample testing is testing for symmetry. In the second part of the thesis, we develop distribution-free tests for multivariate symmetry (that includes central symmetry, sign symmetry, spherical symmetry, etc.) based on multivariate signs, ranks and signed-ranks defined via optimal transport (OT). One test we propose can be thought of as a multivariate generalization of Wilcoxon signed-rank (GWSR) test and shares many of the appealing properties of its one-dimensional counterparts. In particular, when testing against location shift alternatives, the GWSR test suffers from no loss in (asymptotic) efficiency, when compared to Hotelling's T2 test, despite being nonparametric and exactly distribution-free. Another test we propose is based on a combination of kernel methods and the multivariate signs and ranks defined via OT. This test is universally consistent against all alternatives, while still maintaining the distribution-free property. Furthermore, it is capable of testing a broader class of multivariate symmetry, including exchangeability, extending beyond the class of symmetry testable by GWSR.

Harold Frederic's The Damnation of Theron Ware [electronic resource] : a study guide with annotated bibliography / by Robin Taylor Rogers.

Rogers, Robin Taylor. January 2003 (has links)
Title from PDF of title page. / Document formatted into pages; contains 327 pages. / Thesis (M.A.)--University of South Florida, 2003. / Includes bibliographical references. / Text (Electronic thesis) in PDF format. / ABSTRACT: Harold Frederic's The Damnation of Theron Ware (1896) is an important work of American fiction that deserves greater critical attention. My intention in creating a website devoted to Frederic's masterpiece is not only to promote awareness of the novel but also to provide high school and undergraduate students, as well as their teachers, with a resource that will situate The Damnation of Theron Ware within an historical as well as a literary and cultural context. Significant events and discoveries in the fields of science, technology, religion, philosophy, art, and literature shaped Frederic's thinking and writing, particularly the events and characters of The Damnation of Theron Ware. An understanding of this milieu is critical to understanding the issues of the richly complicated novel. / ABSTRACT: The Damnation of Theron Ware, or Illumination as it is known in England, is the story of a Methodist minister who loses his faith when he makes the acquaintance of a Catholic priest, a post-Darwinian scientist, a New Woman, and a pragmatic con artist. In the end, critics are in disagreement as to the extent of Theron's damnation or illumination. A best seller in the 1890s, The Damnation of Theron Ware was heralded as both "the great American novel" and as "anti-American" in its sentiments. Conceived as an ongoing project and research tool, my thesis is an online study guide with annotated bibliography of criticism devoted specifically to The Damnation of Theron Ware. / ABSTRACT: The website is divided into six main sections: (1) the home page, which briefly introduces users to the site, identifies the scope of the project and provides links to other pages; (2) "Harold Frederic," which includes a biography of the author, a timeline of significant events during his lifetime, a select bibliography of his writing, and a sampling of interviews with and articles on Frederic as author and critic; (3) "Bibliographical Studies," which lists bibliographies, checklists, catalogues, critical overviews, and online resources; (4) "The Damnation of Theron Ware," which includes a discussion of the contemporaneous critical reception of the novel, an annotated bibliography of criticism in list form and broken down by subject, a bibliography of dissertations and theses, and recommended discussion questions or topics for essays; (5) a "Glossary," which includes terms that may be unfamiliar to students; / ABSTRACT: and (6) "Links of Interest," which directs users to other websites relevant to a study of The Damnation of Theron Ware. / System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader. / Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Divided into two parts, this study includes first, an approach around the literary criticism, which has been focusing on the relationship between the biblical text and the universe of literary studies. Of the number of experts who have devoted their lives to studying it, we have selected two important names of the literary criticism international in the 20th century, that have stood on this interaction in perspective that we can say of complementary and rhizomatic as the postulates of epistemology proposed by Gilles Deleuz and Félix Guattari. They are the Canadian Northrop Frye and the American Harold Bloom. Of both, the latter is the one that more intensely established the dialog between the Jewish-Christian book and the Literature. From the intriguing conclusions of these theorists, we opened for a second time that establishes the relationship between the thoughts of these experts, with emphasis in Bloom, and the lusophone fiction of three Romanesque clippings: A mulher que escreveu a Bíblia, by Moacyr Scliar; Caim, by José Saramago and Grande sertão: veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa. These works are analyzed in inter-textual dialogs with other literary representations national and international, that include the relationship between the Bible and the Literature in an approach of hypertextuality of conceptualization by Gerard Genette, that in turn converses with considerations of Linda Hutcheon alluding to studies on the parody. As a methodology, we are employing the bibliographic research relating to the object of research relevant to the thesis. As a result of our research, we conclude that there is a plentiful cartography, that this work is an example, which contradict the existence of biblical-literary rhizome, which leads to the proposition that the Bible, one of the most important artistic codes of Western culture, it is a work that can be seen as a literary piece as advocates Harold Bloom, without prejudice of the rhizome that links it to the religiosity, working as one of the most intrigu ing hypo-texts of Western Literature, which can also be researched on a level of high erudition in his hypertextuality.
