Time Dissolving and Freedom in The French Lieutenant´s Woman : From Novel to Film AdaptationProestos, Jenny Karolina January 2010 (has links)
This essay examines the adaptation of The French Lieutenant’s Woman; proclaiming that it is based on the same core of meaning as the novel. This core, or interiority, of the art work, is the freedom which Sarah Woodruff presents. The interiority is immanent within the novel as well as the film. The freedom that Sarah presents creates gaps in time and is mainly freedom from time. From an exterior perspective though, these art works look different. The exteriority is visualized and described by being denominated as different narrative levels. In the film Mike falls in love with Sarah as an escape from his own time, one that is characterized by more lenient moral views than those prevalent in the Victorian Age. This present-day character is not, of course, in the novel but is invented by Harold Pinter as part of a metaphor for Fowles’ metafictional stance. In the novel, freedom is partly represented by an extradiegetic narrative level and suggested in various comments made by the apparent author of the work: John Fowles. This essay highlights the contrasts between the fictive world (on a hypodiegetic level), and the real world (on a diegetic level). By doing this, this essay suggests a motive for Pinter’s “narrative innovation” as a “brilliant metaphor” for Fowles´ novel. With these contrasts we find that the restraints of a seemingly open society (the 1980s in which Pinter was writing the screenplay) are able to contain an inner, rather implicit, restraint for the individual of the 1980s. The longing for freedom is triggered as soon as man is deprived of freedom, irrespective of how and when. Sarah is an escape from Victorian Age for Charles, at the same time as she is an escape from the 1980s for Mike. On the whole, Sarah is an escape from the linearity of all time. Freedom is immanent with both of the artworks, yet they are completely different, seen from outside.

Koma som konst / Coma as ArtSchütz, Marika January 2012 (has links)
In my work as speech and language pathologist I often meet people emerging from coma andtheir experiences intrigue me. Coma is an eluding human condition that offers a challenge formodern science and our view on body and mind. In my Master project in Creative Writing Iwanted to try to enter this zone that is so hard for a clinician to reach: the personal experienceof being in a coma. By writing HUSK MIDAS I have tried to create a realistic fiction based onresearch on coma state and real-life stories of people waking up from coma.In my exploration of the coma state I found that lucid dreaming is common apart fromdreaming, many patients experience sensory inputs like sound and touch which aremisinterpreted and woven into dreams and creating a feeling of confusion and fear.Coma is a frequent theme in literature and film but is often depicted unrealistically andmisleadingly. A few works like Artur Lundkvist’s Journeys in Dream and Imagination andthe film The Descendents by Alexander Payne show a more reality based fiction. While themedical care has the responsibility to provide accurate information and make important healthcare decisions regardless of possible public misconceptions, fiction helps us to dramatize thecoma experience and bring to life this marginalized and otherwise non-communicable state ofthe human condition.

Developing a mentorship tool to improve work performance.Mashilo, Keitokile Hope. January 2002 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to find out if there is a mentorship
tool available to guide mentorship after merger; determine
effective mentoring techniques for improving work performance;
and develop an appropriate mentorship model for improving
work performance within tertiary institution . The main challenge
is that the National Department of Education started a process
of merging institutions of Higher Education. A number of tools
that will help to support these mergers are lacking. The case
study used was based on an in-depth analysis of events and
programmes culminating from the merger of the two institutions.
The Durban Institute of Technology in KwaZulu-Natal was
identified and selected because it is the first institution to result
in a merger. The documents selected provide the greatest
amount of data and the researcher knows which documents
deserve more attention than others. The following data sources
were selected: Technikon Natal and M L Sultan Technikon
merger documentation of 26 March 2002; Department of
Education National Plan for Higher Education of 2001 and
Andersen's Climate Survey Report on the Durban Institute of
Technology of 2002. The theory behind this mentoring tool is
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow's view of human needs in
the work place is described as self-actualization . This theory of human needs guided the development of the mentorship tool.
This is because employees who are mentored will achieve job
performance expected of them. Although a well implemented
mentoring programme can help with retention of staff, an
institution needs to be aware that it may foster an individual's
growth faster. Mentoring affects self-confidence and sense of
marketability among employees and may thus cause an
increase in market vulnerability. / Thesis (M.B.A.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2002.

Previous issue date: 2015-08-31 / This dissertation proposes a comparative analysis of metafiction in the novel The French lieutenant's woman, by John Fowles and in the film with the same name, directed by Karel Reisz, with screenplay by Harold Pinter. Our theoretical frame highlights some of the main studies published in the field of metafiction. We supplement the investigation of metafiction in the literary and filmic narrative in interface with other theoretical contributions, among them: narratology, filmic adaptation and some theoreticians of postmodernism. We adopt as a methodological principle the comparative investigation of some aesthetic devices and procedures associated with metafiction (self-reflexivity, self-consciousness, intertextuality, mise-en-abyme, among others) as long as they have been emphasized in the appreciation of some selected narrative categories (narrator, epigraph, character, reader/spectator) in the literary and filmic contexts. As a whole, our results consider metafiction as being a privileged, mediatory, logic, processual and theoretical-critical tool for the in-depth comprehension of the filmic and literary narratives.

Analys hur de svenska politikprogrammen förändrats över tid : Ett långsiktigt perspektiv / An analysis about how the political programs have changed over time : A long-term perspectivePantzar, Emma January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the study is to analyze changes in the Swedish political parties programs by applying the Public Choice approach. With help from the median voter theorem and the Harold Hotelling model, the paper analyzes if these models are sufficiently descriptive of Swedens political parties movements. A Herfindahl-Hirschman index is constructed which shows changes in concentration of political power over time. The Herfindahl-Hirschman index shows that the degree of concentration in the Swedish political “market” has become lower over time, which indicates that the party competition has increased during the period 1973-2014. In order to analyze whether it is possible to explain changes in the parties’ policies during the period 1973-2014 the median voter theorem is applied. A discussion about how this model can be tested is done as well as an illustration of how the median voter theorem could look like for the parties in Sweden. To analyze whether a one-dimensional scale is descriptive of the movements of the Swedish parties, the Harold Hotelling model is also applied. By illustrating these two models on Swedens parties, the paper investigates whether these models provide a satisfactory descriptions of the change in the Swedish parties political programs. The analysis concludes that the median voter theorem does not explain the changes in the parties politics in a sufficiently detailed manner. It is revealed that the Harold Hotelling model provides a better description for both the Swedish parties movements at the left-right scale and for the changes in the parties politics. In addition to the models mentioned the factor that that is most important for how the parties changed their political programs is the parties’ dependence of the voters opinions.

Chaos and confusion: British oversight of Russian repatriations in postwar southern AustriaMiskulin, Matthew 30 August 2017 (has links)
In 1945, as the Second World War ended, British troops serving under 5 Corps in southern Austria encountered a number of critical problems which hindered their ability to occupy the region and enact the policy of repatriation as set out in the Yalta Agreement. Fragile lines of supply and communication, and the need to feed and house diverse groups of hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war and refugees impeded British attempts to administer the area. Further complicating the situation was the infiltration of Yugoslav Partisans, supposed allies, fighting under Josip Broz Tito who claimed northern Italy and southern Austria as part of a “Greater Yugoslavia.” In preparation of an anticipated forceful ejection of these Partisans, the British military prioritized the fighting effectiveness of its troops over a consistent application of repatriation. The British military issued orders which interpreted Soviet citizenship, and therefore liability for repatriation, in very broad terms. This resulted in an inconsistent application of the policy, in which non-Soviets were either retained or handed over, with both courses of action seemingly in keeping with orders. While subsequent authors, most notably Nikolai Tolstoy and Christopher Booker, have written on this topic, none have yet recognized the connection between the chaotic circumstances in the region and the haphazard application of repatriation. By re-examining archival records of communications between military units involved, this thesis rectifies that lacuna and acknowledges for the first time the irregular and inconsistent nature of these repatriations. / Graduate / 2018-08-11

Ekonomický a politický vývoj Velké Británie za vlády Harolda Macmillana (1957-1963) / Economic and political development of Great Britain during Harold Macmillan's government (1957-1963)Myšák, Lukáš January 2014 (has links)
My master's thesis focuses on analysis of political and economic development of Great Britain in 1957 -- 1964 period, when the Conservative Party was in charge, led firstly by H. Macmillan and then A. Home. After Macmillan gained the post of Prime minister, due to the Suez crisis, I present an analysis of British domestic economy, whose good condition led to conservative election victory of 1959. Then I analyze the shift of British government towards decolonization of Africa and also the British decision to join ECC (predeceased with EFTA agreement). Furthermore, there is an analysis of reasons behind H. Macmillan's resignation, which were mainly of medical character. Third part of my work is considering the Home government, his position as the Prime minister and development of British economy during early 1960's. Thesis is concluded by analysis of 1964's election, where the Labour Party achieved slim victory over the Conservative Party, and therefore was able to form a government.
