No. of bitstreams: 1 Waldir Stefano.pdf: 2863968 bytes, checksum: f780e204a79b8d3f3f23b46dfab77ca6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-18 / The present thesis deals with Herbert Spencer Jennings (1868 1947) contributions to genetics and evolution between 1908 and 1912. During this period, this American biologist developed a series of experiments with Paramecium, and attempted to test the action of selection on those organisms. The aim of this thesis is to analyse Jennings experimental results, trying to elucidate whether his conclusions were well grounded according to the patterns of scientific rationality of his time or not, taking in account the contributions of his colleagues on the subject. Besides that, it will try to situate Jennings contributions in the history of genetics and evolution trying to find out if some labels applied to him or his contributions such as pioneer of biological investigation ; the one who changed the directions of biology ; or who published and presented works clear and coherent , were fair. This thesis contains an introduction and five chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the hereditary and evolutionary precedents as well as Jennings general outlook concerning the subject. Chapter 2 presents some information related to the experimental material employed by Jennings in his experiments. Chapter 3 discusses some results related to heredity and evolution obtained by Jennings in his experiments with Paramecium developed from 1908 to 1910. Chapter 4 discusses the results got by Jennings in his experiments developed from 1911 to 1912, in which he tried to elucidate some features of evolution and heredity in such organism. Chapter 5 presents some final remarks on the subject. This study led to the conclusion that Jennings conclusions (such as that natural selection does not act on pure lines, and that conjugation does not rejuvenate those organisms) were well grounded. However, he cannot be regarded as a pioneer of biological investigation , since several other authors dedicated themselves to it before his time. The scope of this thesis does not allow us to answer whether Jennings contributions changed the directions of biology. But certainly his works were clear and coherent and his contributions enriched the history of genetics and evolution / Esta tese trata das contribuições de Herbert Spencer Jennings (1868 1947) para a genética e evolução de 1908 a 1912.

Author, ideology and publisher a symbiotic relationship : Lovedale Missionary Press and early Black writing in South Africa: with specific reference to the critical writings of H.I.E. Dlomo

Midgley, Henry Peter January 1994 (has links)
The specific instances of R.H.W. Shepherd and H.I.E. Dhlomo are used in this thesis to investigate some of the many factors that influence the formation of a colonial literature, such as politics, social structures and personal ideals. By isolating the Lovedale Mission Press ~s a "contact zone" - a·place where the cultures of the colonizer and the colonized come into direct contact with each other - it is possible to trace how the interaction between these cultures shaped the writing of a particular African writer, H.I.E. Dhlomo. This is done through an analysis of historical factors that shaped the policy of the Lovedale Mission Press in the twentieth century: the development of liberalism in South Africa, the·role of the missionary in African education, the function ofa liberal magazine such as The South African Outlook and the appointment of an ambitious missionary, R.I.W. Shepherd, to the position of Director of Publications. This necessarily included a study of Shepherd's vision of African literature. On the other hand, this study takes cognisance of the factors that shaped Herbert Dhlomo's vision of literature: the development of African nationalism, the entrenchment of segregation as a politial doctrine, and most importantly, his struggle to have his creative writing published by the Lovedale Press. It is shown how Shepherd's vision of what African literature should entail contrasted with Dhlomo's, and how, as a result, Dhlomo deliberately structured his critical writing as a response to Shepherd's Eurocentric approach to African literature.

Connections between the gothic and science fiction in Frankenstein, Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the island of Dr. Moreau

Pereira, Ismael Bernardo January 2018 (has links)
This thesis establishes a dialogue among three books from 19th century British literature: the novel Frankenstein (1818), by M. W. Shelley; the novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), by Robert Louis Stevenson; and the novel The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), by H. G. Wells. This comparison is made based on the specific Gothic and Science fiction conventions present in the books. The main theoretical support for the definition of genres employed here comes from Tzvetan Todorov. The author argues that genres are inevitable as horizons of interpretation, entities in constant change which tend to create new genres from pre-existent ones, in a chain of influences. This thesis considers this supposition to determine how Gothic and Science fiction make themselves present in the works analyzed, in a way that Gothic traits, being adapted through time, give way to similar but yet innovative conventions, which subsequently would be considered a new literary genre. Primarily, considerations concerning the concept of genres through history are made, all of which show how this study was kept constant. Hereafter, certain conventions regarding both genres are defined, as well as the manner they dialogue amongst themselves. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the analysis of Frankenstein and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and establishes the predominance of Gothic conventions – especially the ones related to the inner conflict of the characters, such as the "double" –, while considering the emergence of scientific themes, such as the creator/creature relationship and scientific ambition. The last section verifies how the first cycle of H. G. Wells' Science fiction in a broad sense, and The Island of Dr. Moreau in a strict sense, reemploy conventions of both genres, serving to consolidate the latter. Therefore, it is concluded that there was an evolution which enabled the emergence of a new genre, considering the historical contexts and the books analyzed. This consideration justifies genres as wide-ranging, non-restrictive entities, which may be present in various works simultaneously and broaden their horizon of interpretation.

A teoria crítica de H. Marcuse: fundamentação filosófica de um novo princípio de realidade / Critical theory of H. Marcuse: philosophical grounding of a new reality principle

For this purpose we sought, first, to situate Marcuse in the context of the Frankfurt School and critical theory, as well as demonstrate the development of the specificities of the critical theory improved by him. When Marcuse appropriated of the Marx and Freud s ideas, he has raised a possibility of conceptual expansion, enabling, for instance, the idea of an extension of the social place of denial and the historical contextualization of the reality principle. By pointing out these conceptual extensions and the historicity of the reality principle, also specifying the surplus- repression and performance principle, Marcuse overcomes Freud supported by Marx and expands Marx thematic horizon supported by Freud. It became possible to perform a reading that identifies, even in the biological and natural base, potential changes in human social relations with this theoretical-critical construction. These, especially guided for structural modifications in view of a new sensibility and a new solidarity. The theoretical perspectives thus conquered legitimize the possibility of certain groups and social movements being considered new locals of social place of denial. These have developed and / or preserved the ability of providing subsidies for the modification of the reality principle and, therefore, boost the qualitative change of the whole society. In this perspective it becomes possible to determine parameters for identifying (and fostering) emancipatory capacities of certain social groups in a broad and fruitful way. The possibilities of engagement and change, thus, expanded, diversified and strengthened.

Teorie společenské smlouvy a klasická sociologie: studie z epistemologie. / On the Method's Disappearance: Analysis between philosophies of social contract and classical sociologies. A Study in Epistemology

The Method and its Disappearance: Analysis between philosophies of social contract and classical sociologies. A Study in Epistemology Jan Maršálek Université de Franche-Comté/Charles University in Prague Supervisors: prof. Frédéric Brahami, prof. Miloslav Petrusek (†), dr. Jan Balon. Résumé: In a doubly disloyal continuity with regard to the French epistemological tradition, largely preoccupied with the formation of scientific concepts, the present work addresses the phenomenon of disappearance of 'analytical' method. Nevertheless, the present work does not constitute an historical investigation: its very goal is to show (within the works of T. Hobbes, J.-J. Rousseau, H. Spencer and E. Durkheim) the variation of the epistemological status of the analysis, and thus to set up the concept of an 'epistemological event'. Examining the disappearance of the analysis requires its identification in the theoretical work whereby its leverage remains unacknowledged. Thus, having the status of a method in the philosophies of the social contract of Hobbes and Rousseau, the analysis 'continues' to structure, in a tacit way, the work of Spencer and Durkheim, both of them founders of scientific sociology. Is it possible to claim that, in the 19th century, the analysis manifests itself in the sociology's common recourse to...

The Influence of the First World War on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Mangum, James I. 23 January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its membership felt a substantial impact from the effects of World War I. Although other authors have attempted to bring forward the events of these hostilities, they are few in number and the research in this area is small. Additionally, few have focused on the effects of the war on the Church. In order to increase the understanding of this influence, this work examines how the First World War affected the lives of Latter-day Saints both during and after the conflict. The entire world felt the effects of the world war and the Latter-day Saints were not exempt. Yet during this war, the LDS soldiers had an opportunity to change the way that others viewed the Church. Whether during times of training or on the battlefield, the valiant actions of these men often caused other soldiers to rethink the way they felt about the Saints. One incorrect stereotype that these men helped to remove was that the Latter-day Saints had no feelings of national loyalty. Soldiers of other faiths could not continue to hold such misconceptions after having spent time working with LDS servicemen. In addition to attitude-changing influences, Church President Joseph F. Smith was particularly conscious of the effects this conflict would have on the Church. The war would disrupt missionary work as its violence closed certain areas and missionary age young men were called on to bolster the armed forces. President Smith also feared the cost of the war in lives, which deaths increased with the outbreak of the influenza epidemic. In addition to these misgivings, the president of the Church worried about the possibility that Latter-day Saints of opposing countries would have to fight one another. it would have on missionary work, the cost in lives, and the possibility of LDS servicemen having to fight against other Saints. The influence of the war was not only felt by the soldiers. Those who remained at home learned to live thriftily and to give generously to the war effort. In addition to the general ways in which the war influenced the Church, individual soldiers also had a chance to help the Church. During this war the Church appointed for the first time multiple chaplains: Brigham H. Roberts, Calvin S. Smith, and Herbert B. Maw. These three men had opportunities to work with individual soldiers and influence them for good. Veterans from this war returned home and served in positions of leadership. Some continued military service, while others sought political positions and yet others were called to serve in general leadership positions. So, in both broad and specific ways, World War I changed the lives of Latter-day Saints.

The Aesthetics of Sin: Beauty and Depravity in Early Modern English Literature

Jeffrey, Anthony Cole 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation argues that early modern writers such as William Shakespeare, Thomas Middleton, George Herbert, John Milton, and Andrew Marvell played a critical role in the transition from the Neoplatonic philosophy of beauty to Enlightenment aesthetics. I demonstrate how the Protestant Reformation, with its special emphasis on the depravity of human nature, prompted writers to critique models of aesthetic judgment and experience that depended on high faith in human goodness and rationality. These writers in turn used their literary works to popularize skepticism about the human mind's ability to perceive and appreciate beauty accurately. In doing so, early modern writers helped create an intellectual culture in which aesthetics would emerge as a distinct branch of philosophy.

Bouliane, Sandria P. 11 April 2018 (has links)
In the beginning of the 20th century, Herbert Berliner and Roméo Beaudry were implicated in the Canadian phonographic industry and had an important impact on the emergence of a French-Canadian popular music field. The technical and artistic expertise of these two actors notably participated in the field's transition from a heterogeneous to a more structured state. Through the Compo Company, founded in 1918, they oriented the establishment of a French-Canadian music in a significant way. Using Pierre Bourdieu's field sociology, this study will determine and analyze the interactions and factors involved in the field structuration with a special interest for Berliner and Beaudry's contribution for the period 1918-1932.
