An intermedial study of You're a bad man, Mr Gum!

Ganic, Mekto January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to examine the narrative in You are a bad man, mr Gum! to be able to understand and explain the intermedial aspects of the work. I assume an intermedial, narratological and reception theory perspective in my analysis. The method of close reading is used combined with a reader-oriented perspective. I examine the medial aspects of the chosen work through the pictures, the text, and the iconicity of the typographical pattern of the text. To reach my goal, the following questions are dealt with: What is the character of the narration? How do the various media interact in the production of meaning? What is the relationship between the text and the implicit reader? What is the narratological difference between reading the book aloud and silently?   The theoretical framework f the paper consists of narratological and intermedial theories. Its investigation demonstrates that the book gains from being read from an intermedial perspective. Reading the book aloud creates a synergy between the medial aspects of the book which is missed in sillent reading. The paper also shows that the iconic perspective helps interaction while reading the book; the typographical design of the book triggers interpretations in terms of similarity.

A conductor's guide to J.S. Bach's Cantata 150 "Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich"

Simpson, Will M. January 2008 (has links)
Conducting the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach can be a challenge of sizeable proportions. A significant part of the challenge arises from interpreting and synthesizing several key elements. These elements must be addressed by the conductor if she or he is to produce an informed performance of the work. Before conducting J.S. Bach's Cantata 150, a conductor must have specific knowledge of the various issues that directly impact the performance of the cantata. These issues include appropriate tempi, performing pitch, dynamics, phrasing and articulation, ornamentation, continuo issues, size and sonority of ensemble, historical background, text painting and period instrument factors. This dissertation provides the conductor with a practical and functional guide that addresses the many interpretative elements and provides answers to several specific questions about Cantata 150, aiding the conductor in making critical decisions about preparing and performing this cantata. Divided into three main sections, including a performance practice chapter, a theoretical analysis chapter and a synthesis chapter, this practical manual analyzes and examines the cantata from a performer's point of view. A selected Discography is included. / School of Music

Onesize fits all?

Rönning, Johan, Fyhr Vikström, Emma January 2022 (has links)

Våldets lockelse och islossning : En reparativ läsning av Selma Lagerlöfs Herr Arnes penningar med fokus på manlighet / Thaw and the Appeal of Violance : A reparative reading of Selma Lagerlöf's HerrArne's Hoard/The Treasure with the focus on manliness

Smitz, Mikael January 2018 (has links)
Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) is one of Sweden’s most well-known and prominent authors. The field of research connected to both her personal life and her body of work is certainly immense. However there are still gaps in the research concerning Lagerlöf’s social critique through her literature. Alongside her authorship she was active in the peace- and women’s movement, and particularly so in women’s suffrage. Simultaneously, as the women’s movement gained momentum at the turn of the 20th century, there was a domestic armament in Sweden. It was at this point when Lagerlöf wrote Herr Arne’s Hoard/The Treasure (1903). The purpose of this study is to examine the connections between manliness and violence in Selma Lagerlöf’s Herr Arne’s Hoard/The Treasure. This is achieved by means of reparative reading using gender theory from the Nordic historic masculinity studies. The reparative reading is based on a model of interpretation, first promoted by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and is not about hidden meanings but rather what the text explicitly represents. The analysis shows that the text criticizes a certain fit for military service type of manliness. This particular manliness is characterized by self-interest and vindictiveness, which is tied to an archaic barbarity and social stagnation. At the same time it is connected to positions of power. The analysis also shows, through the critic, a feminine desire for justice, a movement towards change and the subversive potential of sympathy.

There is not much recent research about the subject so this essay is a way to discern this part of the theatre and to get more people interested in the matter. The survey will focus on how music is used in an institutional theatre (Regionteatern Blekinge-Kronoberg) that works with plays for children. The research consists of interviews with a composer, a director and analyzes of three plays for children played in Regionteatern Blekinge-Kronoberg. The music in the plays will be compared to recent theories about music in storytelling.</p><p>The music in the plays is used in different ways but often to explain things that are not told with words, for example feelings and description of characters. The way music is used is closely linked to how the director and composer think about music. An example is their central idea of music as a power that reaches directly to the audience. It is also important to keep in mind that it is adults that create theatre for children which means that the music and stories are always filtered by adult’s eyes and ears.</p>
