Forecasting and Non-Stationarity of Surgical Demand Time Series

Moore, Ian 04 February 2014 (has links)
Surgical scheduling is complicated by naturally occurring, and human-induced variability in the demand for surgical services. We used time series methods to detect, model and forecast these behaviors in surgical demand time series to help improve the scheduling of scarce surgical resources. With institutional approval, we studied 47,752 surgeries undertaken at a large academic medical center over a six-year time frame. Each daily sample in this time series represented the aggregate total hours of surgeries worked on a given day. Linear terms such as periodic cycles, trends, and serial correlations explained approximately 80 percent of the variance in the raw data. We used a moving variance filter to help explain away a large share of the heteroscedastic behavior mainly attributable to surgical activities on specific US holidays, which we defined as holiday variance. In the course of this research, we made a thoughtful attempt to understand the time series structure within our surgical demand data. We also laid a foundation, for further development, of two time series techniques, the multiwindow variance filter and cyclostatogram that can be applied not only to surgical demand time series, but also to other time series problems from other disciplines. We believe that understanding the non-stationarity, in surgical demand time series, may be an important initial step in helping health care managers save critical health care dollars. / Thesis (Ph.D, Mathematics & Statistics) -- Queen's University, 2009-02-09 11:55:42.494

The Effects of the 1933 Bank Holiday and the Emergency Banking Act of 1933 on the Systematic Risks of Various Industries

Ingram, James E 01 January 2016 (has links)
Utilizing the industry portfolio classifications that Fama and French provide in their data library, I analyze the specific effects that the 1933 Bank Holiday has on various industries. My empirical results go beyond what Silber (2009) determines to be significantly positive abnormal market returns on March 15, 1933, which is the day after the Bank Holiday and the largest ever one-day increase in the stock market. I use the CAPM and the Fama-French 3-factor Model to find significant systematic risk decreases after the Bank Holiday in the Coal and Transportation industries, as well as systematic risk increases in Consumer Goods and Apparel. To determine the driving factors behind these changes in systematic risk and abnormal returns, I test the correlation between industry leverage ratios and differences in systematic risk changes after the Bank Holiday. The Bank Holiday helps stabilize the economy and the nation’s banking system, which I expect industries with larger debt obligations will benefit more after the Bank Holiday. Inconsistent with my expectations, I don’t find significant evidence that the systematic risks of highly leveraged industries decreases more than industries with lower leverage ratios. I develop my argument to leave room for changes in the model used to estimate systematic risks in order to identify the variables that are the true drivers of the systematic risk changes that I observe.

By means of a brief history of the blues and samba, as well as a critical analysis of the formation of the national discourse on the United States and Brazil, we see the power of black music in America through the performative agency of the bodies. The dialogue between the discussions of race and gender happens through the problematization of the malandro and the bluesman, respectively present in samba and blues. The trajectories of two black women, Billie Holiday and Elza Soares, show us displacements of hegemonic narratives attributed to female black bodies. Through the analysis of the songs Fine and mellow, My man, Maria da Vila Matilde and Pra fuder, I argue a cultural translation between Billie Holiday and Elza Soares based on the untimely and the predominance of affections of joy and sadness at their performances. The notion of subject as an agency makes it possible to think of performance as a mechanism for writing and translating oneself through the present moment. The timing of performance establishes erasures in official discourses and structures of chronological order that allows the entrance of the "new" in the world by policies of translation. The theory of performance then intertwines with the field of translation through the dialogue between Agamben (2013), Bhabha (2013), Derrida (2006), Deleuze (2002), Nietzsche (2003) and Spinoza (2009). In addition to analyzing performance as an untimely translation, I argue that, as a translational gesture, it is a device crossed by affections.

Bodega + Alojamiento Vitivinícola en Lunahuaná / Winery + Hotel in Lunahuana

Rodríguez Villar, André Javier 29 May 2020 (has links)
The thesis project, in question, consists of a wine and tourism complex located in the Cañete Valley, in Lunahuaná. The objective of the project is to respond to a lack of modern equipment that contemplates the latest trends in the architecture of wine cellars and hotels in rural areas such as the valley. This project responds to this lack due to the fact that in Peru there is recognition for our drinking flag of El Pisco, but this is not reflected in the existing infrastructure. That is why this research is carried out through motivations and intentions, current problems, emphasis on architectural concepts and theories, history of its architectural typology, analysis and comparison with referential projects, analysis and selection of the best terrain; and all the analysis and calculation of the users that will intervene, as well as the necessary environments that the project will contemplate. With all this research and information analysis, we proceeded to generate an architectural proposal located on the selected land, which could respond to such problems and motivations discussed above to achieve a complete architecture project. / Tesis

Daily Self-Monitoring During the Winter Holiday Period: A Strategy for Holiday Weight Maintenance in Reduced-Obese Older Adults?

Cornett, Rachel Ann 22 March 2011 (has links)
Weight management is problematic among Americans, as the number of overweight adults has risen to two-thirds of the population (1). Without the identification of successful approaches to promote weight stability, it is predicted that 86% of American adults will be overweight or obese by 2030 (2). Body-weight influenced diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, are now leading causes of death (3). Annually, adult Americans are thought to increase their body weight by 0.5-0.9 kg (4). Of this gain, 52% is believed to occur during the winter holiday period of mid-late November to early January (5). Unfortunately, obesity research specific to this high-risk period is limited. Older adults and weight-reduced individuals are thought to be highly susceptible to significant holiday body weight gains (1, 6). To date, little research has investigated effective interventions that may be used to assist in successful body weight maintenance during the winter holiday period. Therefore, our purpose was to determine if daily self-monitoring of body weight, physical activity, and step counts is a feasible and effective tool to prevent weight gain in older, weight-reduced adults during the winter holiday period. This intervention represents a holiday weight maintenance approach that may be translatable to larger, more diverse populations. / Master of Science

Engström Nyström, Trixie, Ulfhager, Sara, Vestling, Louise January 2014 (has links)
A new type of chartered holiday, fitness holiday, has evolved during the last years and has also been mentioned in different media channels. Despite this, fitness holiday is a relatively new and unexplored phenomenon, which caught our interest to further explore this. The desire to travel on a holiday of this type has also increased. Therefore, a study about this particular phenomenon with focus on the traveler’s motives behind the choice to go has been done. It’s a qualitative study and most part of the data has been collected during a field study to Playitas Resort, Canary Islands. An observation and several qualitative interviews with visitors at the resort were done during the field study. The purpose of the study is to understand the motive people have for traveling on fitness holidays and the factors behind their choice of destination. The theoretical frame of reference the study has as starting point is a reworked version of Selbys theory Culture and experience in urban tourism to create an understanding of how the buying process happened. To get an understanding about the motive behind their choice of travel, Pearce model Tourist Career Pattern is combined with theories of internal and external forces as well as primary and secondary motives. Lastly, the study show that those who travel on fitness holiday tend to have a similar motive when it comes to the primary motive, internal motivation and also similar reflections in decision-taking. The remaining motives vary depending on personality and identity. The result can to come extent be applied to other travelers since a pattern is found in the analysis.

Les stations balnéaires britanniques : de la prospérité au déclin : le cas de Skegness sur la côte du Lincolnshire / British seaside resorts : from prosperity to decline : a case study of Skegness on the Lincolnshire coast

Chamekh, Mohamed 09 June 2017 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the seaside resort of Skegness and the working class seaside holiday. It validates the onset of decline on British seaside resorts, but confirms the plurality of experiences and the varieties of the strategies of regeneration and survival. The first two parts of the thesis analyse the growth of the seaside holiday as an alternative to old leisure and the growth of Skegness as a seaside resort within the dynamics of changing leisure and changing socio-economic conditions of workers. A second theme, related to the growth of the Skegness resort, which is a major thrust of this thesis, is an analysis of the way Skegness was promoted as a seaside resort. It is argued in this context that the railway, in addition to bringing holidaymakers to the resort, played a pivotal role in the promotion of the resort, especially through posters and to a lesser extent newspaper publicity. The study of promotional materials seeks also to demonstrate the changes in the resort image and social tone from the early years of the resort development until the late twentieth century. This study also addresses the decline of Skegness as a domestic holiday destination. It argues that holidays abroad had a detrimental effect on British seaside resorts in addition to the homegrown factors like the deteriorating resort infrastructure and the poor marketing strategies. Against this background of decline, it is shown that Skegness, despite the alarming deprivation indicators, managed to a certain extent to survive as a working class family destination.
