More Than Digital Makeup : The Visual Effects Industry as Hollywood DiasporaHellström, Sarah K. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis assesses the marginal field (niche unit) of visual effects while taking into account visible and invisible vfx in virtual and actual geographies in Hollywood movies as part of industry-level studies, all the while seeking to bridge the gap between traditional, theoretical approaches of cinema studies and practitioner experience in the context of production culture. The focus of this essay remains on the many temporal aspects of production processes that identify vfx film production as chief, and vfx for television as subsequential. Encouraging scholars to consider a previously limited and repeatedly mislabeled area by demonstrating the pandemic presence of effects and its workers as a form of Hollywood diaspora, this thesis also seeks to demonstrate the need for involvement by means of scholar-practitioner methodologies.

Analýza marketingových nástrojů hollywoodské mainstreamové produkce / Hollywood mainstream marketing tools analysisVondráčková, Alexandra January 2016 (has links)
This masters thesis titled "Hollywood mainstream marketing tools analysis: Has Hollywood marketing outrun the production itself?" aims to describe the state and issues of contemporary film marketing. It poses the question of whether the marketing behind the films is so sophisticated that it gets ahead of the movies. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the fact that this excessive attention to endless refinement of promotional materials for the film - together with the individual marketing tools - ultimately harms the impression from the movie in the eyes of its viewers. They can often feel dissatisfied or even defrauded. This hypothesis is demonstrated and disproved on the basis of specific examples and partial analysis.

Cinema and Comics are both contemporary visual languages. Their origins and development are continuosly linked together, inter-related, influencing - one each other – the course of its evolution in the art of create an own language. The Hollywoodian cinema has its Mark impressed in the cinema evolution history, and his techniques and innovation – even most of them leaded by commecial interests more than artistic inspiration – helped a lot to bring cinema to its actual situation. The american comic books – so recent in entertainment industry as cinema – start your path in adventure and fiction, narrowing in genre untill became synonimous of super-heroes, with his greatest icon – the first super-hero ever: “Superman”. Here, we observe the facts that lead the history of Hollywood cinema and american super-heroes comic books, including their mutual influences, untill came to the actual stage of interconnection through sucessful adaptations of super-heroes to the big screen / Submitted by Jovina Laurentino Raimundo (jovina.raimundo@unisul.br) on 2018-01-17T16:37:13Z

Previous issue date: 2018-09-06 / This research defends the idea that the social forces determined ideologically the
cinematographic production of the United States of America, during the emergence of the
cinema until the period of its consolidation, collaborating for the propagation of
Americanism as a way of life. As a methodology, was used the film analysis of It’s a
Wonderful Life (1946), to observe what kind of American way of life the cinema of classic
narrative structure would be insert in its production, with the intention of spreading the
american way of life without breaking the moral rules already established by the codes of
censorship imposed at the time and that until now, in contemporary times, are in force.
US culture, politics, and economics were discussed in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s,
periods selected for their relevance in the making of myths and turning points in American
history; Americanism as a way of life; Fordism; and Hollywood cinema, for being the one
of the pioneering mass media that collaborated with the forms of Americanization not only
within the US but throughout the world.

: En komparativ studie av propagandistiska uttryck i Die Rothschilds och The Great DictatorJohansson, Emil January 2018 (has links)
This study aims to examine the differences and similarities between the propaganda used by the United states and the Nazis during the second world war. The object for the analysis are movies, and what expressions of propaganda that can be seen and deciphered. This study will also try to explain why there are similarities and differences between the two countries propaganda. The tool for the analysis of the movies is based on Ralph Donald’s method to interpret propaganda used in Hollywood movies. I have made some modifications to his method in order to apply it on Nazi movies as well. The movies used in this study are the American The Great Dictator and the German Die Rothschild’s. I have narrowed it down to two movies because of the time limit of this study. Furthermore, I have presented a small, but crucial part of the previous research in the field of propaganda to suit and to strengthen my arguments and conclusions in the analysis of the movies. The reason why the research is narrow is because of the immense field of propaganda. The results from this study shows that there are similarities and also differences between the propaganda used by the Americans and the Nazis, and that this in part can be explained by the propagandas purpose to dehumanize the enemy. It can also be explained by the fact that propaganda is used to boost the morale of the Homefront during wartime.

Fysikundervisningens science fiction / Science fiction in physics educationSjörs, Simon January 2017 (has links)
Science fiction or rather popular media is a major part of everyday life in today's society. Students consume this media in their spare time and watch it for entertainment, possibly without even reflecting over the consumed content. This paper will focus on science fiction and how the well-produced media is received and reflected upon by the consumers, in this case upper-secondary physics students. Is there an opportunity for physics teachers or other natural sciences teachers to make good use of the interest and the pseudo science, that these media can convey, at school? Pupils have an idea of what physics is in school considering how physics education is laid out and the purpose of this work is to explore possible ways that these different worlds can meet. The work is aimed at evaluating a one hour session done with a student group consisting of 6 physics students in high school. The essence of the survey is to see what types of discussions occur after viewing one or more movie clips containing different physical phenomena. The physical events are shown in movieclips and can be explained by the physics we have today or there may be unrealistic events that cannot be explained. This kind of popular media is often based on creating emotional connections with the consumer which can take away the connection to reality and the real world physics. The theoretical framework that the study was based on is the concept of ownership of learning, this aims to consider how students evaluate their own ideas and take responsibility for following up on previous ideas or questions that they themselves expressed. That way the students hopefully find value in critical thinking and the retention of knowledge might increase.

Understanding the significance of a neighbourhood movie theatre as a cultural resourceBennett, Tammy Lynne 11 1900 (has links)
The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) is in an era of growth,
fundamental change, and reexamination of regional and local quality of life. Within
this context, the complete community policies of the Livable Region Strategic Plan
have been developed to help achieve a region where human community flourishes
within the built and natural environment. The complete communities concept
provides people with broader diversity in the physical and social elements of
community - houses, travel, workplaces, social contacts, public services, recreation
activities, shops and personal services (GVRD, 1995). By allowing this diversity,
people will have a wider range of choices for urban living.
In recent years, municipalities in the GVRD have begun to recognize that cultural
resources are integral to the overall health, vitality and livability of the region. The
role of culture and cultural resources in maintaining and enhancing the region's
livability is acknowledged in two of the complete community policies. Cultural
resources are the "things" which give a neighbourhood, a city, or region its particular
sense of time and place and they are the expressions of what that place is. The
conservation of cultural resources to a community provides a means of making a
neighbourhood, city or region more aesthetically pleasing, and thus more livable.
Neighbourhood movie theatres, for example, are one of the many types of buildings
with cultural significance which may contribute to a community's character, quality of
life and foster a sense of pride for residents in Vancouver communities.
Neighbourhood movie theatres have been an essential component of the
movie-going experience for the citizens of Vancouver since the 1930s. The purpose
of this thesis is to ascertain whether cultural resources, such as a movie theatre,
contribute to a complete community.
Through both a literature review and case study approach, the research sought to
understand the significance of cultural resources, such as a movie theatre, to a
community. The thesis focuses on the case study of the Hollywood Theatre in
Kitsilano to explore how a local cultural resource contributes to the community. A
survey was designed and administered to 60 patrons of the Hollywood Theatre.
The study concludes that the patrons of the Hollywood Theatre indicated that the
theatre contributes to the vitality, and livability of the community. The prospects for
achieving complete communities in established neighbourhoods will be influenced
by local perspectives on growth, and change. Complete community objectives and
strategies may be accepted locally to the degree they are seen as a means to
achieve community aspirations and improve the quality of life of residents. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

Ethical Issues in Documentary Filmmaking - A Case Study of DR's Generation HollywoodJørgensen, Christine Sander January 2018 (has links)
This thesis focus on ethical issues within documentary filmmaking in the largest broadcasting institution in Denmark. It is a case study of the documentary serial Generation Hollywood, produced by Danmarks Radio (DR) in 2016. DR has produced many documentaries, using same style and format as in Generation Hollywood. But something is different with this one, and the thesis aims to find out why this one stands out, from the presumption that ethical issues are involved. It examines the participants’ motives and expectations, DR’s intentions and how ethical issues affected the final product. In the attempt to understand the complexity of ethics, a small sample of interviews are conducted and analyzed and presented together with a partial content analysis. The notions of truth, authenticity, and representation are applied as the theoretical framework to understand: not merely ethical procedures, but underlying feelings possessed by the participants. The thesis brings to light that ethical issues are not only embedded in already established procedures but also caused by unforeseen circumstances and participants’ motives in relation to the project. The research shows how ethical issues affect the final representation, especially concerning authenticity. It also shows how a discrepancy between intentions and expectations, and the understanding of truth (in its start-up phase) impacts the process. Furthermore, it concludes that entertainment demands and modern technology can affect how filmmakers treat people when representing them and it explains how the line between the modern ‘everyday life’ documentary and Reality TV is seemingly blurred.
