The Dancer from the Music: Choreomusicalities in Twentieth-Century American Modern DanceCallahan, Daniel January 2012 (has links)
Revising Yeats's rhetorical question, this dissertation asks: "How can we tell the dancer from the music?" In the early twentieth century Isadora Duncan and her barefoot protégées initiated a performance tradition that would later be recognized as American modern dance. They did this, to a great extent, by embodying European "absolute music." Soon, however, choreographers and dancers of this new art form faced modernist calls for medium-specific "absolute dance" that would express movement's autonomy and not the autonomous music of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. As John Martin, one of the nation's first dance critics, wrote in 1933, "There is a long, sad story to be told about the use of music for dancing which was never intended to be danced to." Today that story is even longer; contra Martin, it is not sad. As the use of classical music was a primary component in the earliest forms of "free dance" and as it remains in some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful modern dance today, this use is in need of critical and historical attention. Tracing an alternative genealogy from Duncan's then-scandalous embodied empathy with sacralized art music, the central chapters of this study of the use of music in American modern dance focus on the lives, works, and reception of two choreographers: Ted Shawn and Merce Cunningham. Both of these men founded his own dance company and created works where choreomusicality, or the relationship between music and dance, remained especially vital. For Shawn, wishing to go even further than Duncan, this meant creating choreographies where dance followed the music as closely as possible. Indeed, in his "music visualizations" (a term that he coined with his wife and colleague Ruth St. Denis) his goal was to create dances that were perfect translations of the music itself. Such translation is ultimately impossible, and in attempting it, I argue, Shawn ended up revealing more of himself--specifically, his desire to perform a non-conventional masculinity that he normally felt was off-limits--than he did of the music. Reacting against this tradition--the standard history of modern dance goes--was Merce Cunningham, in whose mature choreographies music and dance are united only by their overall duration. Yet Cunningham, under the influence of Cage, created several dances to the music of Satie that provide an illuminating exception to this practice. I focus in particular on Idyllic Song (1944) and Second Hand (1970), both of which Cunningham choreographed to Satie's Socrate. Though created during his artistic maturity, Second Hand provides a link to the earliest self-expressive collaborations with John Cage. As a result, this choreography offers an unusual window into the Cage-Cunningham personal and professional relationship. In examining Shawn's and Cunningham's choreography, this dissertation tracks not only the changing role of Western art music in the relatively young art form of modern dance but also examines these choreographers' responses to contemporary attitudes toward the male dancer, unconventional masculinities, and the relatively new identity of the homosexual. In doing so I demonstrate how the choreomusicalities of these men reflected and refracted their masculinities and homosexualities. In addition to providing choreomusical analysis and interpretation, I revise current understandings of both specific scores and choreographies through intensive archival research (from silent films of Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers, which I have synchronized with their unheard music, to Cage-Cunningham manuscripts ignored or previously thought lost), observation of live and recorded rehearsals and performances, and interviews. Ultimately, "The Dancer from the Music" seeks to establish choreomusicality as an exemplary lens through which to view the meeting of music's ineffability with the realities and identities of listening and performing bodies in motion.

Sociabilidades de jovens homossexuais nas ruas de São Paulo: deslocamentos e fronteiras / Sociability of young homosexuals in the streets of Sao Paulo: displacements and bordersHamilton Harley de Carvalho-Silva 09 March 2009 (has links)
This Master research in the Sociology of Education aimed to draw a picture of the elements of social relationships that effect the everyday lives of urban, homosexual, male youth living in the city of São Paulo. Possible facilities and difficulties faced by the youth, traveled routes, limits, strategies, forms of social insertion and traces of sociability built by the boys movements around the city of São Paulo were investigated and addressed. Guided conversations, observation and \"daily-boards\" written by the informants composed the research methods for this research. Four in-depth interviews, three daily-boards and observation led to the composition of analysis and narratives about the everyday life of young homosexuals who have to face the borders of sexuality and economic barriers to build the social relations in the urban environmental. The urban experiences lived by these young people have contributed to the construction of modulations in their identities (constitution of personalities) as strategies of insertion in social groups begin with their own mobilization.

Previous issue date: 2012-05-28 / In this dissertation, I explore discourses about (homo)sexualities, informed by the
perspective of visual culture studies and queer theory, in particular when addressing
issues of education. The locus of investigation is situated in the experience of two
online extension courses and one discussion group organized under the premise of
reflecting on those themes. Based on dialogues with participants of the courses and
the group, constituted mostly with students of an Art Education online undergrad
course, I construct queries about the perceived discourses, and also the process of
making and living the research. I tell this narrative from the point of view of an
apprentice of investigator, bringing my personal experiences and connecting them with
the theoretical framework, positioning myself as a subject affected by those studied
discourses. Among them, the growing visibility of sexuality and the taboo that keeps up
with it; the understanding that (male) homosexuality is essentially bound to gender; the
difficulty in dealing with the theme on the classroom, for fear of influencing the
students; and the existence of contextual factors that challenge subjects into discussing
those issues.
Narrando a

This doctoral dissertation in education looks at a group of men, most over the age of forty, who identify as homoaffective and who gather, systematically, in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with the objective of sharing their experiences, desires and anxieties. The main focus of the dissertation was the question of coming out, understandings of the aging process and the question of friendship as a stylization of existence. The research was inspired by poststructuralistm and cultural studies. Besides monitoring group meetings from 2009 to 2012, there were two interviews with six key informants, analyzed the minutes of meetings of the group and participating in some events outside the meetings. For more than ten years the struggle for a meeting space, the constant movement of incoming and outgoing participants and the establishment and strengthening of an original core, now older, have characterized the group. The sociability of the participants, associated with the marker of age, was constituted "inside" and "outside" of the group‟s meetings in subgroups and, above all, between the dilemma of coming out and the visibility demanded by LGBT activism. Despite the circulation of homonormative as well as prejudiced and conservative practices, the sociability of the group was configured as a support network for its members, especially the older ones, who demonstrated some attempts at and possibilities of an erotic aesthetics of aging.

Previous issue date: 2017-12-15 / The present research aims to understand the male homoerotic practice existing in
Leviticus 20:13 during of the Babylonian post-exile. Our initial proposal is based to
build understanding through the analysis of the words sex, abomination, death, having
the code of holiness (Lv 17-26) in this literary context. In this way, we will use as
research methodology, the bibliographic research, developed based on already
published books and materials. The Bíblia hebraica Stuttgartensia (1997) will
contribute in the translation and analysis of Sacred texts. In addition, we will use the
portughese versions of the the Jerusalem Bible (1991) and Almeida Revista e
Corrigida (1995), which will help us collect and record data pertinent to the clipping
being searched. We have recourse to the historical-critical method that will help us in
the textual analysis of all Levitical literature. We will use Leviticus verse 18:23 in the
data analysis, due to its similarity to the clipping to be researched, which will be of
great value in the exegetical construction of the text. The use of the conflictual method
in the analysis in Leviticus 20:13 will make the hermeneutics of the text have a new
perspective on the understanding of common sense. The discourse of homosexuality
inserted in the Hebrew Bible must be analyzed from temporal perspectives, since it is
an old writing from 538 BC, so our effort is to be able to contribute through a sociocultural
translation, of the presented clipping in Leviticus 20:13.
Recorremos à utilização do método históricocrítico

"Is being the gay best friend still a thing?" -En multimodal kritisk diskursanalys kring representationen av homosexualitet i tv-serien Riverdale (2016-)Jeafer, Staffan January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyze how homosexuality is represented in the modern tv-series Riverdale (2016-). Two confirmed homosexual characters from the show, Kevin Keller and Cheryl Blossom have been used to examine this. To showcase how their homosexuality is represented a multimodal discourse analysis was conducted. The method was used to analyze 34 scenes from varying episodes of the currently available three seasons. Queer theory was used as a theoretical point of departure in the study of the characters sexuality. Findings of the analysis shows that Kevin often withers down to stereotype of being a feminine and comedic gay best friend. Cheryl on the other hand is shown being more than just a stereotype but however noticeably lacking in sexual relations with her same-sex partner. Comparisons with previous studies was further used to see how homosexuality is constructed in the show. Through the comparison similar representation could be found from previous gay characters in terms of stereotypes and roles. The study showed however that Cheryl and Kevin’s depiction in the show was noticeably more positive.

Os processos subjetivos no acolhimento e na adoção de crianças por casal homoafetivo: um estudo de caso / The subjective processes in sheltering and adoption of children by same-sex couples: a case studyAlmeida, Maurício Ribeiro de 25 May 2012 (has links)
The adoption of children by homosexual couples is an emerging subject in contemporary times. In Brazil, such cases are becoming increasingly common, forcing many segments, especially the juridical system, to understand this family model. In general, law enforcers are concerned about risks to the development of the child in a same sex couple environment. Moreover, the most conservative segments of society assume that if there is legal recognition of a same-sex families, disorders may weaken family values, such as protection, recognition of sexual difference and socialization of its members. This study examines the subjective processes of a same sex family consisting of two men living in a stable union for over twelve years in a countryside town in the state of Sao Paulo. The couple sheltered, aiming to adoption, two biological brothers, one year and a half and three years old, respectively, at the time of the adoption petition. The family was approached one year after the children had arrived. To carry out survey and data analysis, we used the methodological strategy of case study and a theoretical psychoanalysis link, which have proven necessary to scale up the subjective processes in adoption. We studied the procedures of adopting parents in the exercise of parenting, and if they would promote disruptions and would install unconventional modes of child-rearing and socialization of children, thus inaugurating different parenting styles from those socially embedded. The analysis looked into relations between parenting practices - associated with the care of a child - and parenthood experimenting - which refers to phantasmatic contents that act over the childs desire to form a family. Regarding the binding process, psychic transmission was highlighted, taking into consideration personal history of adoptees as well as that of the couple in an adoption experience. Data collected show that the family consisting of a same-sex couple, though novel, takes on traditional family values. Thus, there was convergence between practice and experience of parenting, because this same-sex family does not differ significantly when it comes to traditional family models. Children fall into the adoptive family lineage incorporating new designations of relationship, because they have two fathers. The broadening of the debate is essential, because if a same-sex family does not necessarily deconstructs socially accepted values, it does not seem reasonable to think of it as a social threat. Moreover, the study group also displays factors that cause distress in traditional families, such as stiffening of their structures and perpetuation of heterosexism. The establishment of a network link between adopting parents and between these and professionals involved in adoption may reduce isolation and break the silence, allowing the confrontation of these issues in the political, social, legal and psychological scopes
