Från svartvitt fotografi till målning och skivomslag : En studie av en bilds transformation / From black and white photograph to painting and album cover : A study of one picture´s transformation

From the perspective that it is one and the same picture that is changing, this essay includes semiotic analyses of Lynn Curlee´s painting Smoking angels, made in 1979, the photograph from 1928 wich inspired the artist, as well as Black Sabbath´s album cover Heaven and Hell, that was first released in 1980. Although the forms of the pictures are different the motif is quite the same, yet, what the pictures convey is different. The analysis will be based mainly by the use of two theories: Hans Belting opines that a picture can not exist on its own, that "the what" of an image is steered by "the how" in wich it transmits its message. The medium that is used and the physical form are the messengers but the picture happens where it is manifested. Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz´s theory implies that to understand what a picture means we need to study the context and culture that is prevailing where the picture is shown. How the picture is received in its different forms and what the factors are that play a part in this, is the main focus in this essay.

Space-Time Block Codes With Low Sphere-Decoding Complexity

One of the most popular ways to exploit the advantages of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is using space time block coding. A space time block code (STBC) is a finite set of complex matrices whose entries consist of the information symbols to be transmitted. A linear STBC is one in which the information symbols are linearly combined to form a two-dimensional code matrix. A well known method of maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of such STBCs is using the sphere decoder (SD). In this thesis, new constructions of STBCs with low sphere decoding complexity are presented and various ways of characterizing and reducing the sphere decoding complexity of an STBC are addressed. The construction of low sphere decoding complexity STBCs is tackled using irreducible matrix representations of Clifford algebras, cyclic division algebras and crossed-product algebras. The complexity reduction algorithms for the STBCs constructed are explored using tree based search algorithms. Considering an STBC as a vector space over the set of weight matrices, the problem of characterizing the sphere decoding complexity is addressed using quadratic form representations. The main results are as follows. A sub-class of fast decodable STBCs known as Block Orthogonal STBCs (BOSTBCs) are explored. A set of sufficient conditions to obtain BOSTBCs are explained. How the block orthogonal structure of these codes can be exploited to reduce the SD complexity of the STBC is then explained using a depth first tree search algorithm. Bounds on the SD complexity reduction and its relationship with the block orthogonal structure are then addressed. A set of constructions to obtain BOSTBCs are presented next using Clifford unitary weight designs (CUWDs), Coordinate-interleaved orthogonal designs (CIODs), cyclic division algebras and crossed product algebras which show that a lot of codes existing in literature exhibit the block orthogonal property. Next, the dependency of the ordering of information symbols on the SD complexity is discussed following which a quadratic form representation known as the Hurwitz-Radon quadratic form (HRQF) of an STBC is presented which is solely dependent on the weight matrices of the STBC and their ordering. It is then shown that the SD complexity is only a function of the weight matrices defining the code and their ordering, and not of the channel realization (even though the equivalent channel when SD is used depends on the channel realization). It is also shown that the SD complexity is completely captured into a single matrix obtained from the HRQF. Also, for a given set of weight matrices, an algorithm to obtain a best ordering of them leading to the least SD complexity is presented using the HRQF matrix.

Carl Friedrich Geiser and Ferdinand Rudio : the men behind the first International Congress of Mathematicians

The first International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) was held in Zurich in 1897, setting the standards for all future ICMs. Whilst giving an overview of the congress itself, this thesis focuses on the Swiss organisers, who were predominantly university professors and secondary school teachers. As this thesis aims to offer some insight into their lives, it includes their biographies, highlighting their individual contributions to the congress. Furthermore, it explains why Zurich was chosen as the first host city and how the committee proceeded with the congress organisation. Two of the main organisers were the Swiss geometers Carl Friedrich Geiser (1843-1934) and Ferdinand Rudio (1856-1929). In addition to the congress, they also made valuable contributions to mathematical education, and in Rudio's case, the history of mathematics. Therefore, this thesis focuses primarily on these two mathematicians. As for Geiser, the relationship to his great-uncle Jakob Steiner is explained in more detail. Furthermore, his contributions to the administration of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology are summarised. Due to the overarching theme of mathematical education and collaborations in this thesis, Geiser's schoolbook "Einleitung in die synthetische Geometrie" is considered in more detail and Geiser's methods are highlighted. A selection of Rudio's contributions to the history of mathematics is studied as well. His book "Archimedes, Huygens, Lambert, Legendre" is analysed and compared to E W Hobson's treatise "Squaring the Circle". Furthermore, Rudio's papers relating to the commentary of Simplicius on quadratures by Antiphon and Hippocrates are considered, focusing on Rudio's translation of the commentary and on "Die Möndchen des Hippokrates". The thesis concludes with an analysis of Rudio's popular lectures "Leonhard Euler" and "Über den Antheil der mathematischen Wissenschaften an der Kultur der Renaissance", which are prime examples of his approach to the history of mathematics.
