Hybrid switching : converging packet and TDM flows in a single platform

Optical fibers have brought fast and reliable data transmission to todays network. The immense fiber build-out over the last few years has generated a wide array of new access technologies, transport and network protocols, and next-generation services in the Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), and Wide Area Network (WAN). All these different technologies, protocols, and services were introduced to address particular telecommunication needs. To remain competitive in the market, the service providers must offer most of these services, while maintaining their own profitability. However, offering a large variety of equipment, protocols, and services posses a big challenge for service carriers because it requires a huge investment in different technology platforms, lots of training of staff, and the management of all these networks.<p> In todays network, service providers use SONET (Synchronous Optical NETwork) as a basic TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) transport network. SONET was primarily designed to carry voice traffic from telephone networks. However, with the explosion of traffic in the Internet, the same SONET based TDM network is optimized to support increasing demand for packet based Internet network services (data, voice, video, teleconference etc.) at access networks and LANs. Therefore the service providers need to support their Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure as well as in the legacy telephony infrastructure. Supporting both TDM and packet services in the present condition needs multilayer operations which is complex, expensive, and difficult to manage. A hybrid switch is a novel architecture that combines packets (IP) and TDM switching in a unified access platform and provides seamless integration of access networks and LANs with MAN/WAN networks. The ability to fully integrate these two capabilities in a single chassis will allow service providers to deploy a more cost effective and flexible architecture that can support a variety of different services.<p> This thesis develops a hybrid switch which is capable of offering bundled services for TDM switching and packet routing. This is done by dividing the switchs bandwidth into VT1.5 (Virtual Tributary -1.5) channels and providing SONET based signaling for routing the data and controlling the switchs resources. The switch is a TDM based architecture which allows each switchs port to be independently configured for any mixture of packet and TDM traffic, including 100% packet and 100% TDM. This switch allows service providers to simplify their edge networks by consolidating the number of separate boxes needed to provide fast and reliable access. This switch also reduces the number of network management systems needed, and decreases the resources needed to install, provision and maintain the network because of its ability to collapse two network layers into one platform.<p> The scope of this thesis includes system architecture, logic implementation, and verification testing, and performance evaluation of the hybrid switch. The architecture consists of ingress/egress ports, an arbiter and a crossbar. Data from ingress ports is carried to the egress ports via VT1.5 channels which are switched at the cross point of the crossbar. The crossbar setup and channel assignments at ingress port are done by the arbiter. The design was tested by simulation and the hardware cost was estimated. The performance results showed that the switch is non-blocking, provide differentiated service, and has an overall effective throughput of 80%. This result is a significant step towards the goal of building a switch that can support multiprotocol and provide different network capabilities into one platform. The long-term goal of this project is to develop a prototype of the hybrid switch with broadband capability.

Design, simulation, and construction of a series hybrid electric vehicle

This thesis evaluates a series hybrid electric drivetrain design for use in parking patrol vehicles. Due to the particular attributes of this application, it is proposed that the design would improve the energy efficiency of such a vehicle. The scheme is evaluated in depth through the use of electromagnetic transient simulation tools, which are used to create a highly accurate model of the vehicle. A prototype vehicle of the same design is built, and used to verify and improve the accuracy of the simulation model. The simulation model is then used to predict the energy efficiency of the series hybrid design for parking patrol. This simulation based design strategy is proposed as a method for more rapid and cost effective design of hybrid electric vehicles. / October 2007

Lower hybrid drift wave properties in space

The whole universe is filled with plasma. There are different kinds of plasmas filling large volumes, separated by distinct boundaries. Many important energy conversion, particle acceleration and plasma transport processes occur at these boundaries, and therefore it is important to study the plasma processes there. It will for example help us to better understand the interaction and energy exchange between the Sun and the Earth. The lower hybrid drift waves (LHDW) are strong plasma waves that are often excited within boundaries, but their role in different plasma processes are still unclear. Many studies of the LHDW have been done, both in space and in laboratory. However, the LHDW are electron scale waves, and due to their small wavelength it has been difficult to study them in detail experimentally. For the first time we are able to make very detailed studies of the LHDW using observations by the Cluster spacecraft in the plasma surrounding Earth. By making cross spacecraft correlations of the electric field and examining existence conditions, we were able to determine the velocity of propagation and wavelength of the waves and thereby identify them as LHDW. We also calculate the electrostatic potential and find that it corresponds to about a third of the electron temperature. This indicate that they might be able to affect the electrons and thus take part in the processes within the boundary layer. By deriving a linear relation between the electrostatic potential, and the wave magnetic field, we compare them both and find that they correspond very well. We can use this to estimate the electrostatic potential in cases when cross spacecraft correlation is not possible.

Analysis of coded OFDM system over frequency-selective fading channels

This thesis considers the analysis of system performance and resource allocation for a coded OFDM system over frequency selective fading channels. Due to the inseparable role taken by channel coding in a coded OFDM system, an information theoretical analysis is carried out and taken as the basis for the system performance and throughput. Based on the results of the information theoretical analysis, the optimal system BER performance of a coded OFDM system is first shown to converge to the outage probability for large OFDM block lengths. Instead of evaluating the outage probability numerically, we provide in this thesis a simple analytical closed form approximation of the outage probability for a coded OFDM system over frequency selective quasi-static fading channels. Simulation results of the turbo-coded OFDM systems further confirm the approximation of the outage probability. By taking the instantaneous channel capacity as the analytical building block, system throughput of a coded OFDM system is then provided. With the aim to compare the performance difference between adaptive and uniform resource allocation strategies, the system throughput of different allocation schemes under various channel conditions is analyzed. First, it is demonstrated that adaptive power allocation over OFDM sub-carriers at the transmitter achieves very little gain in terms of throughput over a uniform power distribution scheme. Theoretical analysis is then provided of the throughput increase of adaptive-rate schemes compared with fixed-rate schemes under various situations. Two practical OFDM systems implementing rate-compatible-punctured-turbo-code-based (RCPT-based) hybrid automatic-repeat-request (Hybrid-ARQ) and redundancy incremental Hybrid-ARQ protocols are also provided to verify the analytical results.

Real-time optimal control of autonomous switched systems

This thesis provides a real-time algorithmic optimal control framework for autonomous switched systems. Traditional optimal control approaches for autonomous switched systems are open-loop in nature. Therefore, the switching times of the system can not be adjusted or adapted when the system parameters or the operational environments change. This thesis aims to close this loop, and apply adaptations to the optimal switching strategy based on new information that can only be captured on-line. One important contribution of this work is to provide the means to allow feedback (in a general sense) to the control laws (i.e. the switching times) of the switched system so that the control laws can be updated to maintain optimality of the switching-time control inputs. Furthermore, convergence analyses for the proposed algorithms are presented. The effectiveness of the real-time algorithms is demonstrated by an application in optimal formation and coverage control of a networked system. This application is implemented on a realistic simulation framework consisting of a number of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that interact in a virtual 3D world.

Optimal timing control of switched systems with applications to optimal bridge repairs

Following results over recent years, this thesis enhances the problem of minimizing a cost functional defined on a state trajectory of an autonomous switched dynamical system. The cost functional traditionally used, is augmented with explicit costs on the switching times and the final time is set by a constraint as opposed to being given. An equation for the gradient of the cost functional is derived and an algorithm is proposed for computing local minima. The algorithm is based on existing steepest descent methods including the Armijo procedure and gradient projection. A matlab implementation of the algorithm is developed in order to solve optimal problems that can be modelled with costs on or between the switching times. An existing problem, the motivation for this research, where repairs on a bridge is to be optimized, is provided and solved.

Bakgrund: Framväxten av Internet hade stor inverkan på många branscher. Det talades både om den potential som E-handeln hade och det hot den utgjorde mot traditionella butikshandlare. Att E-handel har förändrat många branscher är tydligt men också att återförsäljare börjar kombinera E-handel med fysiska försäljningskanaler. Traditionella företag har i många fall öppnat en E-handel för att svara på konkurrensen och en hel del har skrivits om detta i forskningen. Vad som dock fortfarande är relativt outforskat är E-handlare som väljer att öppna fysiska försäljningskanaler. Syfte: Syftet är att studera hur ett E-handelsföretag inom återförsäljning går till väga när det öppnar butiker och skaffar sig en hybrid distributionsstruktur. Genomförande: Vi har valt att göra en fallstudie av företaget Scandinavian Photo som i huvudsak baseras på intervjuer genomförda på deras huvudkontor i Jönköping samt i deras butik i Stockholm. Resultat: Vad som karaktäriserat strategin för fallföretaget är att den verkar ha vuxit fram över tid snarare än yttrat sig som ett rationellt vägval. Det har påståts att det skulle vara lättare för stora, traditionella återförsäljare att skapa och integrera hybridstrukturer men fallföretaget och dess marknad vittnar om något annat. Fallföretaget visade även att en telefonavdelning kan vara en viktig resurs då en E-handlare integrerar en fysisk kanal. / Background: The emergence of Internet had a major impact on many industries. Research was made of both the potential in E-commerce and the threat it posed to the traditional retailers. It is clear that E-commerce changed many industries but also that companies is starting to combine E-commerce with physical sales channels. In many cases, traditional retailers have started E-commerce in order to respond to the competition. However, what is still relatively unexplored is E-retailers who choose to open physical channels. Aim: The aim is to study how an E-retailer makes the transition towards a hybrid structure. Completion: We have chosen to do a case study of the company Scandinavian Photo, primarily based on interviews conducted at their headquarter in Jönköping and in their store in Stockholm. Findings: What seemed to characterize the strategy in the case company was that it emerged over a long period of time rather than being a rational choice. It has been claimed that it would be easier for large, traditional retailers to create and integrate a hybrid structure but the case company and its industry indicate something else. The case company also revealed that a phone service may be an important resource when an E-­‐retailer integrates a physical channel.
