South African composer, Alexander Johnson is a prolific and outstanding figure among
his contemporaries. His numerous works and contributions to South African classical
and indigenous music is worthy of mention. Over the years, he has been recognised both
locally and internationally for his contributions by receiving numerous awards, honorary
positions, as well as commissions. His works have been performed both locally and
internationally. Johnson’s compositional style mostly features diverse musical elements
and devices from the post-tonal era. He also utilises special and unique compositional
techniques in his works which give him a ‘signature.’
This study discusses and disseminates brief information on Johnson’s biography, as well
as a catalogue of the composer’s published works.
Most importantly, the three works in this study namely Kahlolo, Let_at_i, and Vocalise
Africa feature Johnson’s unique interpretation of South African music in the twenty-first
century. This study focuses on exploring the background of the three chosen works, and
the inspiration behind the creation of these works. Furthermore, the compositional
techniques employed by the composer, as well as the distinguishing features of his
compositional style are also discussed.
This study additionally aims to trace and disseminate similarities between the three
respective works as well as analyse the three selected pieces with regard to mostly
harmonic devices and techniques, melody, rhythm, form structure, texture, and
registration for organ music. Each piece is comprehensively discussed separately, with
emphasis on the above topics.
Further research in the future could entail a study on style discussion of Johnson’s more

Seduced by (a) last year : Interdisciplinary Music Motivated by Non-Idiomatic Improvisation, The Non-Productive Attitude, and Pluralist AestheticsLarsson, Andreas Hiroui January 2020 (has links)
In my master’s project I investigated an interdisciplinary musical practice based on my artistic and educational background in art, music and philosophy. I chose one concept per discipline: non-idiomatic improvisation from the field of music, the non-productive attitude from art, and pluralist aesthetics from philosophy. I used the three concepts to find materials for my project: both musical materials, for example live improvisation and recordings, and non-musical materials, for example photographs and texts. The materials I found made up the components of a performative piece of music and became musical through contextualisation and metaphor. The photographs, recordings and texts were collected from different periods in my life and represented my interests, relations and values during my different educations. The ensemble that I assembled to perform the music consisted of people that were close to me on both a personal and professional level to emphasise that the music was based on my educational background and personal narrative. Initially I was less interested in the sonorous outcome of my project and I would have accepted it based solely on its interdisciplinary motivations. During my studies I realised that involving musical parameters to a greater extent enhanced the interdisciplinary and non-musical aspects of my project. An important learning outcome of my project was that focusing on the musical particularities of my artistic practice strengthened its interdisciplinary character. The Trumpet Arias in the Oratorios of George Frederic Handel: A Lecture Recital; Together with Three Other RecitalsMorley, Max L. 08 1900 (has links)
The lecture was given on April 23, 1979. The discussion consisted of an exploration of the history and derivation of the Baroque idiomatic technique for trumpet to which Handel was heir. Consideration for Baroque performance practice is included along with stylistic and formal analyses of the trumpet arias that were performed. Four works were rendered; they were selected on the basis of their adaptability to the recital situation. The first recital was presented on April 24, 1970, and included solo works of Giuseppe Torelli, Geoffrey Robbins, Marcel Poot, Halsey Stevens, and Fanfares Liturgiques by Henri Tomasi which featured Mr. Morley as conductor of a sixteen member brass choir. The second recital, on February 18, 1971, featured solo works by von Oskar Bohme, Roger Goeb, Robert Weast, Merrill Ellis, and the Septet fur Biasinstrumente by Paul Hindemith. The third recital included solo works of Paul Hinderoith, Kent Kennan, Georges Enesco, and Marcel Bitsch, and was presented on August 16, 1973. All of the recitals were recorded on magnetic tape and are filed, along with the written version of the lecture material, as a part of the dissertation.

Preparera prepositioner - Sång och musik som didaktiskt hjälpmedel för prepositionskunskap i spanskaPalm, Belén January 2012 (has links)
Abstract A central problem in all language teaching is to teach the correct use of prepositions. There are grammar rules, but also a lot of exceptions and idiomatic expressions that often have to be learnt by examples or by heart. A trick for learning might be to use a mnemonic method with songs and music to memorize a correct use of prepositions. The purpose of this study is to test a language teaching didactic exercise for knowledge of preposition in Spanish with songs and music. Grammatical aspects, rules and exceptions when studying prepositions in Spanish are presented. A literature review shows the significance of music for language learning. By lesson trials the five so called “empty” prepositions in Spanish: a, con, de, en and por, are studied by 40 high school students only by listening to and singing two different songs in the beginning and at the end of each Spanish lesson during two weeks. The result of the study shows an improved knowledge of correct use of the 5 Spanish prepositions among the students using the method. Furthermore, the language teaching didactic exercise with song and music was seen as a pleasurable learning experience by the students.

The main topic of this thesis are the multiword expressions in the italian language. The thesis is divided into two parts - the theorical and the empirical part. The theorical part deals with the multiword expressions, the syntagmas and the idiomatic expressions. In the empirical part the connections between the constituents of the multiword expressions will be researched. Than four criteria will be on the multiword expressions applied (head inflection, insertion of the head's modifiers, pronominalisation of the head and dislocation and topicalization of the head). These transformations will be verified with the aid of corpora and questionnaires. Depending on the results of this research will be decided if the multiword expressions resemble the syntagmas or the idiomatic expressions.

A presente tese aborda o primeiro livro escrito em ídiche por Mêndele Môikher1 Sfórim, Dos Kleine Mêntshele (O Pequeno Homenzinho) através de várias leituras do mesmo, em mais de uma versão, às quais sucedeu-se uma traduçãocuidadosa para o português. Faz considerações e referências sobre vida e obra do autor, cognominado jocosamente, por Shólem Aleikhem, de o avô da moderna literatura ídiche. Ele foi também um dos precursores do ressurgimento da língua hebraica. Shólem Yákov Abramovitsh, seu verdadeiro nome, foi um dos importantes intelectuais conscientes do momento histórico e do processo linguístico de seu povo, no final do século XIX, no leste europeu, ao qual propunha auto respeito, profissionalização e não renegação do judaísmo. A escolha de seu pseudônimo, Mêndele, o vendedor de livros, serve de pretexto para a sua participação como personagem das histórias, dada a importância e atuação de tal profissional na sociedade retratada. O texto ídiche é permeado de frases e citações em hebraico que foram trazidas para o português no mesmo padrão de linguagem do texto original. / This dissertation studies Dos Kleine Mentshele The Little Man the first book ever written in yiddish by the writer Mendele Moikher Sforim through many readings of it in more that one version, followed by careful translation into Portuguese. It makes considerations and references about Mendeles life and work. He was nicknamed by Sholem Aleikhem the grandfather of the Modern Yiddish Literature. He was one of the precursors of the revival of the Hebrew language. Sholem Yakov Abramovitch, his real name, was one of the most important intellectuals aware of the historical moment and of the linguistic process of his people at the end of the 19th century in Eastern Europe, and suggested self respect, professionalization and no Jewish denial for the historical moment and the linguistic process. The choice of his pen name, Mendele, the book peddler, allows his participation as personage of his stories because the significance and acting od such professional in the described society. The Yiddish text is permeated by Hebrew sentences and quotations brought to Portuguese at the same linguistic level.

Nesse sentido, as expressões idiomáticas são especificidades da língua e contribuem enormemente na dinamicidade, na transformação e no enriquecimento linguístico. O presente trabalho faz um estudo sobre o uso de dicionários de expressões idiomáticas (EIs) da Língua Portuguesa no processo educacional de estudantes do Ensino Fundamental. Verifica-se, por meio de pesquisa e aplicação de atividades em classes de 6º a 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola privada e de uma estadual de São José do Rio Preto, se existe a prática do uso de dicionário especial de expressões idiomáticas. Essa prática no processo educacional pode trazer muitos benefícios; o ambiente escolar se torna o ideal com o uso de dicionário, pois discentes e docentes podem adquirir e trocar conhecimentos. Nessa troca, o aluno pode ensinar ao professor por meio de sua experiência e testemunhar o uso de fraseologismos mais modernos, resultantes da vivência dele. O professor, por sua vez, pode contribuir ensinando a “traduzir” a riqueza metafórica das EIs e de outros fraseologismos denotativos na norma culta e formal, já que em certos contextos um registro vulgar não é adequado. Dessa maneira, o processo de ensino-aprendizagem pode se tornar mais eficaz e estimulante, pois parte do conhecimento prévio compartilhado em sociedade para se estabelecer novo conhecimento e maior desenvolvimento cultural. / The language is an active organism in constant transformation. Therefore, the idiomatic expressions are specificities of the language and contribute extremely with the linguistics dynamism, transformation and enrichment. The present work makes a study on the use of Portuguese Language idiomatic expression dictionaries in the educational process of basic teaching students. We have researched, sixth to nineth grade classrooms of basic teaching level of private and state schools in São José do Rio Preto city, if the practice of the use of special dictionary of idiomatic expressions existing. This practical in the educational process can bring many benefits; the school environment becomes the ideal with the dictionary use, because learners and teachers can acquire and exchange knowledge. In this exchange, the learner can teach the teacher by means of his/her life experience and testify the usage of more modern fraseologisms. The teacher, can contribute teaching “to translate” the idiomatic expressions and the other fraseologisms in denotative language, cultural and formal language, since in certain contexts they are not adjusted. In this way, the teach-learning process can become more efficient and stimulating as it begins from previous knowledge shared in society to establish new knowledge and greater cultural development.

‘Yo puedo bien español’ : Influencia sueca y variedades hispanas en la actitud lingüística e identificación de los hispanoamericanos en SueciaEsquivel Sánchez, María Denis January 2005 (has links)
<p>The aim of this research has been to describe and analyse Swedish linguistic and cultural influence, on identification, and idiomatic awareness as well as on the Spanish used by Hispanic Americans who have lived more than 12 years in Sweden.</p><p>The analysis has been carried out within the field of sociolinguistics, specifically in the area of language contact, drawing on methodological aspects of ethno linguistics, sociology of language and cognitive linguistics. The research was divided into two phases. In the first phase, we describe and analyse Corpus 1, consisting of 20 interviews of first generation Hispanic Americans political refugees. In the second phase, we describe, compare and analyse Corpus 2, which consists of 105 questionnaires distributed to first and second generation Hispanic Americans in Sweden.</p><p>The results have shown that in Sweden Hispanic Americans have gradually generated a variety of Spanish which clearly shows features of Swedish culture and language and with an aspect of standardisation due to the fact that in the intercommunication between language speakers of varieties of Spanish certain variations have slowly been eliminated over the course of time. The sociolinguistic situation of the informants has been observed as well as the nature of the immigration and identification and idiomatic awareness in relation to their integration or lack of integration into Swedish society. The use of 38 words with a high level of synonymy was also investigated in order to establish standardisation of these representative words among the varieties of Spanish, spoken in Sweden. Furthermore we have investigated clichés, lexical, semantic-pragmatic and syntactic loans from Swedish as well as Swedish cultural influence on use tense among the informants.</p>
