Worker-initiated violence: Prevention strategies in park and recreation departments

Hutchinson, Tamara Germaine 12 1900 (has links)
Workplace violence infects many organizations. This descriptive study assesses the extent to which Texas park and recreation departments institute policies and procedures for preventing worker-initiated violence. Thirty directors from local park and recreation departments were interviewed by telephone and asked to identify whether their departments used specific prevention strategies to thwart instances of worker-initiated violence. The findings reveal few prevention strategies being used and suggest a need for park and recreation managers to increase their awareness and take a more proactive approach to violence prevention.

Challenges related to Female Expatriation : The effect of organisational culture on the job satisfaction of female expatriates

Katsavria, Charikleia, Ramazani, Afra January 2019 (has links)
In today’s globalised business environment, females are underrepresented in expatriate positions. The lower numbers of females in international assignments results from the glass-ceiling that is established within the organisational culture of MNCs. What happens however, when the organisational culture is renowned for diversity, a strong ethical code of conduct and operates in a female-focused industry? We have therefore decided to investigate: “How does the organisational culture of Alpha cosmetics affect the job satisfaction of female expatriates?” and “What are the challenges related to female expatriation?” The study will attempt to answer the research questions by exploring the themes of organisational culture, job satisfaction and female expatriation. A qualitative research method involving semi-structured interviews, with ten female expatriates working for Alpha Cosmetics, was conducted.  Based on our results, Alpha Cosmetics possesses a clan culture which is commonly associated with high levels of job satisfaction. That appears to be the case in the beginning, however, the dark side of the culture surfaces when the expatriate glass-ceiling is identified in the organisation. This ceiling makes females self-initiate their expatriation without receiving any of the organisational benefits accompanied with traditional expatriation. This situation signifies the negative impact of the organisational culture on the job satisfaction of female expatriates.

Media Exposure and Social Response as Predictors of Citizen's Attitudes Toward Police

Garrison, Tara A. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Police-involved deaths of African Americans have increased over the past two decades, with continued high-profile media exposure. The problem is that extant research provided only a partial understanding and disparate focus about how media exposure, social responses, social media use, and attitudes towards police were possibly related to citizens witnessing acts of police-initiated actions against African Americans in the United States. The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess the predictive nature of media exposure, social response, and social media use concerning citizens' attitudes towards police. The two theories supporting this study and shaped this hypothetical system are media dependency and the structural strain theory. Data were collected using a characteristic profile survey, Index of Social Networking, Offline and Online Activity Levels Measure, and Attitudes Towards Police Scale with a convenience sample of 132 respondents who were 18 year of age or older who are identified as users of the social media platforms Facebook and LinkedIn. Data were analyzed using Pearson Correlation and forward entry multiple linear regression. The overall model was significant (p = .002) and accounted for 12.3% of the variance in the respondent's attitude toward the police, however, media was not significant. This study represented an effort into understanding the sentiments of police and police activity coupled with media-driven and public attitudes towards police-initiated actions. These findings can be used to enhance relationships between communities and the police, especially in the practice of community policing and resolving negative perceptions based on cultural imprints that hinder effective policing.

Synthesis and electrochemical characteristics of nitroxide polymer brushes for thin-film electrodes

Hung, Miao-ken 27 June 2012 (has links)
We reported a non-crosslinking approach to synthesize nitroxide radical polymer brushes for thin-film electrodes via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymeization (SI-ATRP), which was effective to yield the organic radical polymer brushes with high grafting density and to attain a uniform surface. As mentioned above, the covalent bonding of nitroxide polymer brushes to the conducting substrate not only prevented the polymer dissolution into organic electrolyte solution but improved the cycle life performance of batteries. Moreover, they can be the potential application in microbatteries by using microcontact printing to produce the patterned nitroxide polymer brushes on a conducting substrate. Even though the organic radical polymer brushes provided a new approach to syn-thesize thin-film electrodes, they still existed many problems that needed to study and to figure out. We discussed the morphology and electrochemical performance about ni-troxide radical polymer in the thesis. In the measurement of surface properties, we used the contact angle, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and atomic force microscopic (AFM) to proceed. Another, in the measurement of electrochemical analysis, we used the cyclic voltammetry(CV), alternating current (AC) impedance and charge-discharge to understand the regarding mechanism in this polymer layer during the electrochemical reaction. In chapter 4, we discussed the oxidative problem in the polymer brushes. It should be well controlled during the oxidation reaction, because the oxidation level may affect the diffusion of electron that resulted the capacity better or not. In chapter5, we controlled the density of polymer brushes to construct the possible mechanism during the electro-chemical reaction, and found out the possible factors that affected the electrochemistry. In chapter 6, we applied the better results from the front chapter to the organic radical battery, and compared their electrical performance.

Analyse et propagation des incertitudes associées à la dépressurisation de l’Hélium 3 sur les transitoires de puissance du réacteur CABRI / Analysis and propagation of uncertainties associated with Helium-3 depressurization on the characteristics of power transients in the CABRI reactor

Clamens, Olivier 26 October 2018 (has links)
CABRI is a pool type pulsed reactor designed for studying pre-irradiated nuclear fuel behavior under RIA (Reactivity Initiated Accident) conditions. The helium-3 depressurization from the transient rods system allows the insertion of up to 4 $ reactivity mainly countered by the Doppler effect when the power reaches in few milliseconds up to 200,000 times the initial 100~kW power. This thesis presents the improvements added to the power transients prediction and the associated uncertainties studies. The point kinetics calculation coupled with 1D thermal-hydraulics and heat transfer has been improved by the addition of surrogate models based on experimental analysis and Best-Estimate calculations of the helium-3 depressurization and of the reactivity effects and of the kinetics parameters. The power transients modeling improvements have a positiv impact on the CABRI tests prediction. The propagation of the experimental and of the modeling uncertainties was realized with the SPARTE code and the URANIE uncertainty platform. Finally, the power transients characteristics optimization is approached in order to improve the CABRI experiments designing.

A missiological study of the Kimbanguist Church in Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo

Jesse, Fungwa Kipimo 11 1900 (has links)
This is a systematic and critical study of the mission of the Kimbanguist Church in the city of Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The research question was: “How do the Kimbanguist members interpret and express the Christian message in and for the context of Katanga province through their communal life, worship and mission?” A historical chapter traces the origins and growth of the church, followed by four chapters that analyze the mission of the church by means of a ‘praxis cycle.’ The chapters look at mission strategies (leadership, church departments, mission methods), followed by mission agents (spiritual head, clergy, chaplains, women, youth), the theological sources of mission (the Bible, the life of Simon Kimbangu, and a code of conduct) and spirituality (liturgy, sacraments, pilgrimages and festivals). In a concluding chapter several critical issues were identified for critical dialogue between the Kimbanguist church and other African churches. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Estimating the Risk of Self-Initiated Upward Lightning to Onshore Wind Turbines and Towers

Thörn, Frida, Sjöstedt, Wilhelm January 2020 (has links)
Field observations has shown that wind turbinesare especially exposed to lightning strikes. The probability forlightning strikes to offshore wind turbines has been analysed ina previous article. In this project the probability for upwardself-initiated lightning strikes to onshore wind turbines anda lightning protection tower was analysed. This was done bycollecting elevation data and recreating the site topographyin COMSOL Mutliphysics 5.5, and also by collecting weatherdata which were analysed in MATLAB. The probability for thecritical electrostatic field was then calculated and analysed. Theresult shows that the risk of lightning strike is correlated to thetopography and cloud height. / Kandidatexjobb i elektroteknik 2020, KTH, Stockholm

The User-Reported Critical Incident Method for Remote Usability Evaluation

Castillo, Jose Carlos 29 January 1999 (has links)
Much traditional user interface evaluation is conducted in usability laboratories, where a small number of selected users is directly observed by trained evaluators. However, as the network itself and the remote work setting have become intrinsic parts of usage patterns, evaluators often have limited access to representative users for usability evaluation in the laboratory and the users' work context is difficult or impossible to reproduce in a laboratory setting. These barriers to usability evaluation led to extending the concept of usability evaluation beyond the laboratory, typically using the network itself as a bridge to take interface evaluation to a broad range of users in their natural work settings. The over-arching goal of this work is to develop and evaluate a cost-effective remote usability evaluation method for real-world applications used by real users doing real tasks in real work environments. This thesis reports the development of such a method, and the results of a study to: • investigate feasibility and effectiveness of involving users with to identify and report critical incidents in usage • investigate feasibility and effectiveness of transforming remotely-gathered critical incidents into usability problem descriptions • gain insight into various parameters associated with the method. / Master of Science

Religion and development in South Africa : an investigation of the relationship between soteriology and capital development in an african initiated church (AIC)

Mafuta, Lubeme 01 1900 (has links)
The upsurge of religious movements and independent churches in the Global South is bringing a new twist to world economic development not anticipated by many theologians and social scientists. With a syncretic soteriology geared toward the liberation of the whole person, religious movements and independent churches of the south are preaching to their adherents, mostly the poor and the marginalized, a message of faith in an omnipotent and compassionate God who is concerned for their weal and woes and who offers them an assured and holistic salvation. By placing their faith in God, the poor and marginalized people are discovering their true selves and are saved/liberated. This assured salvation (certitudo salutis), which is a total liberation of the physical and spiritual world, becomes, in turn, the motivational energy for capital development. The Zion Christian Church (ZCC) soteriological predicament stands at this juncture. Through processes of syncretization and purification, ZCC has managed to deconstruct the European/North American and African Traditional Religions soteriologies to construct a pure soteriology that is relevant to the socio context of its adherents. ZCC deconstructs these soteriologies by broadening, for example, the classic Christian soteriogical theory of Christus Victor in her notion of sin, death and the devil and the African traditional soteriological notion of uBuntu and spirit-power. The purity, or holistic salvation, generated out of these processes serves as grounds for identity and economic empowerment of its adherents. With a holistic salvation that centers on healing, personal integrity and spiritual power, ZCC members have been able to achieve considerable success in the labour market by becoming an army of potential employees. They have also distinguished themselves in their work ethic, where they are seen as hardworking, disciplined, obedient and sober. Empowering its adherents economically through a religious soteriology, the ZCC has become an example of a trend that is shaping the Global South and is reviving the interest of social scientists and theologians to further investigate the impact of religious and theological formulations on the economic conduct of individuals. / Theology / D.
