The Political Effect of Female Terrorists: Do women become empowered when entering male dominated spheres?

Peldán Carlsson, Moa January 2018 (has links)
This quantitative study aims to investigate mechanisms for female empowerment in the context of conflict by examining whether a female entry into armed rebel, insurgent and terrorist movements can lead to an increase of women represented in politics. Three different hypotheses for the relationship are set: that the effect is positive, that the effect is negative and that there is no effect at all. The study argues that one possible mechanism for the relationship is that female rebels become role models for other women when entering the male dominated domain of a rebel movement. These women disrupt and question existing gender hierarchies and ideas of what it means to be a woman. By expanding the idea of what women are capable of doing, these women could inspire other women to enter other male dominated spheres, such as decision-making domains in politics, and hence gain political power. The method for examining this possible mechanism is OLS linear regression between the dependent variable women in parliament and the independent variable women in rebel movements. The result found is that there is a significant positive effect, meaning that the prevalence of women in rebel movements do actually affect the prevalence of women in politics in post- or present- conflict countries around the world. The conclusion is therefore that, at least in militarized societies, women as a group can become empowered when some women enter male dominated spheres as this believably unties the traditional idea of the capabilities of women.

Camilo Torres e o amor eficaz: as origens da teologia da libertação e a Insurgência armada colombiana

Mauricio José Avilez Alvarez 08 March 2013 (has links)
This thesis, Liberation Theology in the Colombian Armed Insurgency, analyzes the participation of the priest and theologian, Camilo Torre Restrepo and of a group of Christian theologians which gave continuity to his set of ideas in the Colombian conflict within the armed insurgency, the FARC-EP and the ELN. It is questioned if the participation of these people in the armed struggle could be considered a praxis of Liberation Theology. It seeks to understand if they built a theological theory as an interpretation of their praxis in the armed struggle. It also seeks to comprehend how they related to the Marxist-Leninist social theory of the insurgent organizations and to characterize the Colombian political context in which this social phenomenon took place. In the same way, this search could list elements about the practice of this group of theologians which would show if their proposal is, politically, still valid. In the first chapter, an analysis is made of the historical trajectory of the Colombian State and of the Churches as political actors. In the second chapter, one seeks to analyze the works of Camilo Torres and his revolutionary praxis. In the third chapter we work with the group of theologians who followed Camilo Torres steps and who gave continuity to his set of ideas. The research shows that Camilo Torres created a theological proposal which is inside liberation theology, and is called Effective Love and permits one to ally oneself with Communist sectors and even to connect oneself to the armed insurgency through taking on Marxist-Leninism as a social theory and method. After his death a broad movement was generated of Catholic and Protestant Christians, called Camilismo, and they continued with the praxis of Effective Love, connecting themselves to the insurgent organizations of the ELN or of FARC. One is able to affirm that a valid liberation theology exists within the Colombian armed insurgency. This proposal, since it is theological and political, could help in overcoming the Colombian armed conflict.

Judging Their Own: When and Why States Pursue Accountability for Human Rights Violations of Security Forces

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: What explains why governments and militaries pursue accountability against some human rights violations committed by members of their armed forces during ongoing conflicts, but not other violations? Further, what are the consequences of such prosecutions for their military and governmental objectives? The theory put forth by this study suggests that rather than only the natural outcome of strong rule of law, domestic prosecutions within a state’s security apparatus represents a strategic choice made by political and military actors. I employ a strategic actor approach to the pursuit of accountability, suggesting that the likelihood of accountability increases when elites perceive they will gain politically or militarily from such actions. I investigate these claims using both qualitative and quantitative methods in a comparative study across the United States and the United Kingdom. This project contributes to interdisciplinary scholarly research relevant to human rights studies, human rights law, political science, democratic state-building, democratic governance, elite decision making, counter-insurgency, protests, international sanctions, and conflict resolution. Particularly, this dissertation speaks to the intersection of strategy and law, or “lawfare” a method of warfare where law is used as means of realizing a military objective (Dunlap 2001). It provides generalizable results extending well beyond the cases analyzed. Thus, the results of this project will interest those dealing with questions relating to legitimacy, human rights, and elite decision making throughout the democratic world. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Political Science 2018

Traditionell luftmaktsteori och våldsverkande luftoperationer i upprorsbekämpning

Vaattovaara, Filip January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines whether traditional air power theory complements counterinsurgency air power theory in kinetic counterinsurgency operations. The reason being that there is some discrepancy in the theories of how air power can be used in counterinsurgency. Winning a revolutionary war requires a graduated spectrum of violence; whereas, traditionally air power is characterized as only using the kinetic, hard power, end of that spectrum. The purpose is to test Robert Pape’s air power theory of military coercion by denial, motivated by the theory’s agreement with current research of air power in counterinsurgency. This thesis is a comparative case study examining two, similar and successful counterinsurgency operations, Operation Anaconda and Operation Medusa. Findings show that denial is quite prominent when direct support of ground forces occurs; whereas operational and strategic interdiction indicate low or no occurrence. This study strengthens the theory’s applicatory power in a counterinsurgency context, and suggests it can complement current research on counterinsurgency air power in kinetic usage. /
Uppsatsen skriven VT 2017 under Termin 4 Officersprogrammet 15-18 med inriktningmot flyg.
