Do Emotion Dysregulation and Internalized Shame Mediate the Relationship Between Borderline Personality Disorder Symptomology and Criminal Involvement?

Smith, Madison 01 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and debilitating mental disorder that is over-represented within the criminal legal system (CLS), with 15-29.5% of individuals in the CLS meeting criteria. However, little research has examined mechanisms leading to criminal involvement within this population. Potential mechanisms include positive/negative emotion dysregulation and internalized shame, which (aside from positive emotion dysregulation) have been linked to criminal involvement in other populations. Research has yet to examine these constructs as mechanisms explaining criminal involvement among individuals with BPD. This study examined positive/negative emotion dysregulation and internalized shame as mechanisms of the relationship between BPD and criminal involvement. Adults (N = 93) currently incarcerated in jail who are identified as having a current or prior mental health concern were invited to participate in the study. Measures include the addiction severity index (ASI) examining criminal involvement, the original and positive versions of the difficulties in emotion regulation scale (DERS; DERS-P), and the internalized shame scale (ISS). At the bivariate level, BPD symptoms were significantly correlated with negative emotion dysregulation (total score) and several subscales (clarity, goals, impulse, strategies), as well as internalized shame and criminal involvement. Negative emotion dysregulation and internalized shame were unrelated to criminal involvement, and there was no evidence of mediation through these constructs. These bivariate results are consistent with other literature, but future research is needed to examine relevant variables that could explicate the relationship between BPD symptoms and criminal involvement.

Psychometric Properties of the Nungesser Homosexual Attitudes Inventory and its Relation to Health Risks Among Gay Men

Cohen, Michael Alan January 2014 (has links)
Sexual minority men are at an increased risk for negative outcomes, including mental health disorders, suicide, substance abuse, and sexual risk behaviors. Internalized Homophobia (IH), roughly defined as sexual orientation-related self-hatred among gay men, has been linked to these outcomes. Since its publication in 1983, the predominant measure of IH used in psychological research has been the Nungesser Homosexual Attitudes Inventory (Nungesser, 1983). The scale is potentially dated, and there is a relative paucity of investigation into its psychometric properties; findings derived through its use may be in question. The current effort describes two studies designed to address these concerns. Study I includes a principal components analysis of the scale using data obtained from an internet sample (N = 486), resulting in suggested revisions for the broader scale, and proposed brief versions of the Self and Disclosure subscales. Study II used data obtained from a second internet sample (N = 884) to further evaluate scale structure and properties. Analyses include confirmatory factor analyses of the original scale, Shidlo's revised version (1994), the suggested alternative, and the Brief Self and Disclosure scales proposed in Study I. Of the three versions of the overall scale, the suggested alternative proposed in Study I exhibited the most favorable fit and highest item loadings. Internal consistency for the suggested alternative was equal to that of the larger NHAI and Shidlo-revised scales. External validity was evaluated through correlations with mental health and suicide, substance use, sexual risk, and orientation-based victimization. Strong results in the expected direction were found only in the instance of mental health, with negative attitudes towards homosexuality being associated with increases in depression and anxiety scores as measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The suggested scale alternative and Brief Self and Disclosure scales performed similarly to the more extensive NHAI and Shidlo-revised scales, leading to a recommendation for their use in research. Finally, findings from the current effort are discussed in relation to the broader social context impacting the lives and development of sexual minority men. / Psychology

SHATTERING THE GLASS CEILING: CHALLENGING GENDER BASED IDENTITIES AND INEQUITIES FOR WOMEN IN HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP POSITIONS IN THE UNITED STATES

Charlotte S Bingham (18175744) 18 March 2024 (has links)

This two-paper dissertation focuses on gender equity in higher education in the United States, specifically on workplace gender equity. There is a lack of feminist research in the literature which can have significant consequences in the development of both higher education policy and practices, as a misunderstanding about the gendered nature of educational experiences may be linked to inadequate responses to the situation. Feminist research helps understand and provide recommendations for such experiences. As such, gender equality should not only be an ethical imperative but also an emphasis in higher education. To increase gender equality in higher education, this dissertation recommends that scholars focus on feminist research. The goal of this research is to understand how gender impacts a person working in higher education by investigating historical and contemporary gender-based identities and inequities in higher education in the United States. Hence, this dissertation answers the following questions: What strides have been made to reduce gender inequity in the workplace in higher education in the United States? How does gender impact a person's career trajectory into leadership positions in higher education? As a result, this research provides recommendations for administrators and policy makers to reduce gender inequity in higher education.

In Brazil, there is now a concern in studying crack dependents, since the use of this substance brought greater complexity to the planning of coping strategies for consumption. Substance dependence is a highly stigmatized condition, having internalized stigma as the main effect, which occurs when the individual becomes aware of the negative stereotypes associated with his condition and applies them to himself. Social support has been described as an important tool for fighting stigma and repairing social ties. Thus, the aims of this study were: (1) to review the literature regarding the relationship between internalized stigma and social support, (2) to evaluate the relationship between internalized stigma and social support among crack dependents in social vulnerability . For the first aim, 13 studies were analyzed whose results indicated a negative association between internalized stigma and social support, with social support as acoping strategy to stigma. Regarding the second aim, 114 crack dependentes were interviewed, using the instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Brazilian version of ISMI scale adapted for Substance Dependent and Social Support for People Living with HIV/AIDS adapted for substance dependence. Ninety-five percent of participants were male with a mean age of 36.5 years (SD=8.2) , 70% were unemployed , 58.2% studied up to elementary school , and 85% reported not living with a partner. About 74 % were homeless. The associations between internalized stigma and social support were examined by correlation analysis. The analysis showed that the correlation between the support and social stigma internalized was not statistically significant. However, when evaluating this relationship from the sources of support reported by the participants, we found that having support from health professionals and family members do not seem to be enough to reduce internalized stigma. The results highlight the importance of studies that deepen the understanding of social relations of crack dependents, so that coping strategies for internalized stigma can be developed according to their needs.

Sexual Anxiety Among Non-Monogamous Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Phenomenological Study

Peixoto, Cayden 23 September 2020 (has links)
Sexual anxiety is a prevalent issue among men who have sex with men (MSM) that negatively affects sexual satisfaction and wellbeing. However, research investigating sexual anxiety among MSM has been scarce. This descriptive phenomenological study was conducted to address knowledge gaps and identify the predominant underlying causes of sexual anxiety among non-monogamous MSM. Using purposive sampling, eleven sexually active, non-monogamous MSM were recruited for this study (N=11). Data were collected using audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using Moustakas’ (1994) structured approach to data analysis in phenomenological research. Participant descriptions of their lived experiences of sexual anxiety identified six prevalent causes among MSM individuals. These included performance anxiety, fear of HIV, fear of bacterial STIs, internalized homophobia, body image dissatisfaction, and history of sexual abuse. Not surprisingly, fear of HIV was the dominant cause of sexual anxiety among most participants. Recommendations to prevent and reduce sexual anxiety among MSM are provided.

“I’m not like the other girls” : The phenomenology of affect: How is female self-expression affected by internalized misogyny?

Rische, Jessica January 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze the affect of internalized misogyny on female self-expression. Guided by the research question “How is female self-expression affected by internalized misogyny?” a phenomenological framework of affect based on work by Sara Ahmed is applied. Through an action-oriented focus group discussion, four female-identifying individuals share their embodied experiences of internalized misogyny. This research is positioned within a Western context and includes me as an additional involved participant. Results conclude that internalized misogyny may affect female self-expression through five common themes. These include an internalized female beauty standard resulting in self-objectification, a limited range of acceptable female expression resulting in a passive acceptance of gender roles, competition and comparison among women resulting in a devaluation of ourselves and other women, self-doubt and self-censorship resulting in a distrust of ourselves and other women as well as perfectionism and fear of failure resulting in valuing men over women. These results correlate both with the previous studies presented as well as my own previous first-year master thesis. This research adds to the academic conversation by including a reflection on the internalized attitudes towards ourselves beyond those directed towards other women.

Den enes lyx, den andres vardag : En kvantitativ studie om hur svenska bostadsköpares personlighetsdrag relaterar till motivationsgrunder för lyxkonsumtion på bostadsmarknaden

Berglund, Julia, Spejare, Hanna January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to analyze and increase the understanding of how Swedish home buyers, in addition to needs and benefits, reason about choosing a home based on a prestige and status need with a focus on luxury. The study has applied a deductive approach with a quantitative method in the form of a questionnaire study. The questionnaire was sent out via social media and it is thus difficult to determine the total sample. The authors make their own assessment and of 675,612 potential respondents, 1294 answered the survey. The data were then analyzed by network analysis in the JASP statistics program. Reporting and analysis of the data took place via a network analysis. The functions were applied there: “Network plot”, “Centrality plot” and “Clustering plot” as well as “Weight Matrix” which shows the exact weight of the different relationships. The study shows a connection between Swedish home buyers' personality traits and preferences in the housing market. This is because homes of high quality and durability as well as superficially luxurious homes are important for all home buyers except neurotic ones. For home buyers with personality traits Openness to Experience and Agreeableness, however, it is female home buyers who value homes with a luxurious exterior. Neurotic individuals, on the other hand, like to imitate other people's homes. However, this mainly applies to neurotic women who appreciate and strive for their own home to imitate homes owned by people they compare themselves with. In addition, a home purchase can be made in order to satisfy status and prestige needs. This is especially true for men with high values of Agreeableness and individuals with high values of Neuroticism, even there mainly men. This study can be further deepened by looking at luxury in the housing market from an age perspective or a specific city in Sweden. Alternatively, by focusing on why home consumers think as they do in terms of preferences in the housing market. The study helps the brokerage industry to use the results on speculators and customers as a tool to streamline needs analysis.

Saved, sanctified and filled with gay liberation theology with aamsm and the black church

Green, Adam 01 May 2011 (has links)
AAMSM (African American men who have sex with men) endure homophobia and racism in their political realities because of their identity. How do multiple oppressions impact the experiences of AAMSM participating within Black churches? Despite the Black church's legacy for liberating African Americans, AAMSM feel demonized and alienated while enduring religion-based homophobia espoused within many Black churches. In the church, AAMSM are pushed further down the hierarchy of oppression and privilege. In response to these observations, this thesis employs a sexual discourse of resistance. I engage this discourse with a literature review in order to discover links between homophobia and AAMSM in an interdisciplinary manner. Jungian psychology is then utilized to interpret internalized oppression. This leads to a discussion of social and religious justice for AAMSM in the Black church through the lens of liberation theology. While the oppressed have become oppressors within the Black church as regards AAMSM, liberation theology affirms all of humanity. Liberation theology provides a message of love for AAMSM and a source of Christian ethics for the Black church.
