Sous le signe du métissage : l'ethnogenèse intra-amérindienne des Malécites (1600-1750)

Beaudet, Alexis January 2014 (has links)

The knowledge of critical care nurses regarding intra-aortic balloonpump counterpulsation therapy

Oosthuizen, Phillippus Johannes 01 1900 (has links)
Intra-aortic balloonpump (IABP) counterpulsation therapy is a volume displacement device designed to provide partial assistance to the left ventricle of the heart. Critical care nurses are expected to manage IABP therapy. It is therefore important that the critical care nurse has the knowledge to manage IABP therapy in a safe and therapeutic manner. The question arises: does the critical care nurse have the knowledge to manage IABP therapy? The purpose of this research study is to explore and describe the knowledge of the critical care nurse regarding the management of IABP therapy. The design of this research study is a quantitative, descriptive and contextual study, in which a sample survey was performed, using a questionnaire (based on a literature study) under controlled conditions. The knowledge of the majority of critical care nurses tested was found to be insufficient. Safe management guidelines and in-service training have been proposed to improve the situation. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)

Abdominal aortic peripheral intervention to facilitate intra-aortic balloon pump support during high risk percutaneous coronary intervention: a case report

Low, See W, Lee, Justin Z, Lee, Kwan S 10 March 2015 (has links)
UA Open Access Publishing Fund / Background: The use of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) via the trans-femoral approach has been established for hemodynamic support in patients undergoing high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, there are various challenges associated with its use, especially in patients with aortoiliac occlusive arterial disease. Case presentation: We describe a case of high-risk PCI with IABP support complicated by intra-procedural detection of severe abdominal aortic stenosis that was successfully overcome with angioplasty of the stenotic lesion. Conclusions: Our report highlights distal abdominal aortic stenosis as a potential barrier to successful PCI with IABP support, and angioplasty as an effective means to overcome it.

Lives and plans of Polish migrant families in Edinburgh

Ramasawmy, Lucy Jane January 2014 (has links)
This thesis takes as its subject Polish families who migrated to Edinburgh after Poland’s accession to the EU in 2004. It analyses the families’ post-migration trajectories and experiences, and investigates how these are influenced by factors relating to Polish history and culture, by features particular to the post-accession migration wave and by families’ individual characteristics. Theoretical approaches are drawn from a range of academic disciplines including, reference group theory, literature relating to gender-division of paid work and child-care, and ‘mobilities’ theory, and these approaches are all employed in exploring the factors that influence family members’ integration, employment and lifestyles and their plans for the future. This qualitative study focuses on the experiences of thirty families living in and around Edinburgh in the two years from 2009 to 2011, and combines a variety of methods in data-collection and in analysis. Families were interviewed twice with a year lapse between interviews, couples were interviewed jointly and conversational interviews were supplemented with questionnaires. These design features enable analysis of change over time, provide insight into family-dynamics and generate a range of forms of data. In analysis the combination of thematic coding of interview transcripts with Qualitative Comparative Analysis, allows in-depth exploration of experiences at the individual and family level to be positioned within the context of trends and patterns observed across the whole group. The study finds that the families fall into distinct types according to particular key characteristics and migration strategies, and that the different family types are linked to different experiences of life in Scotland and plans for the future. Younger migrants who arrived independently, decided to stay and later started families are found to be embarking on new careers and making use of the greater flexibility of the employment market in the UK to enact their preferred division of work and childcare. In line with previous research findings, for families whose oldest child is preschool age, school start date in Poland is identified as critical in limiting the period in which parents feel the decision about whether to return can be made. Parents who migrated with school-age children because of financial hardship in Poland are highlighted in this study as a previously under-researched post-accession migrant group; among these families most parents within the study group are found to have been considering permanent settlement at the time of migration and to be maintaining this intention; their decision to stay is particularly influenced by concerns about the difficulties that they anticipate their children would encounter in re-entering the school system in Poland and about their own reduced ability to re-enter the labour market there after de-skilling in employment in the UK. Parents who migrated to take up professional work in the UK are identified as possessing the highest levels of ‘motility’, that is, capacity to make use of mobility generally; among the study group these parents are found to have the most varied options and future plans and to be those who indicate the greatest likelihood of leaving the UK in the short term.

A study of the efficacy of organ cultures to examine wood formation in Pinus radiata D. Don

Putoczki, Tracy Lynn January 2006 (has links)
Pinus radiata D. Don is an economically important plantation species to New Zealand that is susceptible to the wood quality flaw 'intra-ring checking'. Intra-ring checking is a term used to describe radial fractures that can occur in the earlywood portion of a growth ring, altering the appearance and resilience of the wood, thereby decreasing its economic value. This thesis presents a study that was part of a broad, ongoing collaborative investigation directed at understanding wood quality issues, with the long term goal of enhancement of future radiata pine crops. These investigations are funded by the Wood Quality Initiative Ltd., and involve basic science, field trials and engineering studies related to intra-ring checking. Specifically, the present study was designed to establish the effects of the mineral nutrients boron, calcium and magnesium on wood formation, to determine whether they are associated with intra-ring checking. This research was carried out in three stages. Firstly, the ultra-structural and biochemical properties of wood with intra-ring checking were examined to determine if specific features of the cell wall were associated with the incidence of intra-ring checks. Electron microscopy techniques revealed that the CML/S1 region of the cell wall often showed a decrease in CML lignin staining and S1 striations in wood with intra-ring checks. However, Klason and acetyl bromide assays did not show a change in lignin content. In order to understand how changes in the CML/S1 region of the cell wall may occur, methods were required that would allow for the observation of wood formation in a controlled environment. In the second stage of this study, an organ culture technique was successfully developed to allow for the growth of radiata pine cambial tissue, sandwiched between phloem and xylem, on a defined nutrient medium. This nutrient medium was manipulated, using ion-binding resins, to control the amount of boron, calcium and magnesium available to the growing tissues, to determine if variations in wood formation could be induced. In the final stage of this research, an extensive comparative examination of different techniques that could be used for the observation and measurement of selected wood properties was undertaken, in order to determine the efficacy of the organ cultures to study wood formation in an altered nutrient environment. Wood properties were examined for various stages of xylogenesis, beginning with cell division and expansion, followed by cell wall deposition, and lastly with the onset of lignification in order to define the success of the culture technique. Electron microscopy investigations suggested that in the presence of very little boron the CML/S1 wall showed darker striation deposits, while an increase in calcium availability, resulted in a more defined CML/S1/S2 wall region compared to the controls. Further examination of the cell walls suggested that pectin esterification and possibly lignification could also be increased by limited boron availability. However, in many of the observed and measured parameters of wood properties, a great deal of complex 'between-tree' and 'within-culture' variation was observed. The results show that elucidation of the association between nutrient availability and the incidence of intra-ring checking can not be established from this organ culture study. In a concurrent study, the preliminary investigation of arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs) in radiata pine was undertaken. Radiata pine AGPs were positioned in the compound middle lamella of xylem cells, suggesting potential roles in cell-cell adhesion or cell-cell signalling. For the first time, radiata pine AGPs were isolated and characterized in terms of their protein and carbohydrate composition, both of which yielded features typical of AGPs in other plant species. Unique to radiata pine AGPs was the presence of a large proportion of 5-linked arabinose. While the precise function(s) of AGPs are unknown, the results obtained in this research have established a basis for further investigation into the potential for their involvement in wood formation. Overall, new tools have been established to facilitate future research on radiata pine, a commercially important species, and novel results have been obtained concerning the mechanisms of wood formation therein.

A Countryside Perspective of Queer : - queering the city/countryside divide

Gagnesjö, Sara January 2014 (has links)
This thesis contributes with a countryside perspective to queer research by highlighting the countryside as a context where queer lives are lived. In the thesis I problematize the city/countryside divide with a view of the concept of queer as dependent on space and time.  The empirical materials are generated through a workshop on queerness, gathering people living within a countryside context; the materials consist of a discussion and written responses to questions on queerness and the city/countryside binary. Theoretically and methodologically, the thesis is inspired by the notion of agential realism (Barad 2007) and situated knowledge, (Haraway 1988); the use of creative writing, inspired by Richardson (1994 and 2000), has also been central to the development of the thesis. The analysis is carried out within themes focusing on conditions for queerness within city/countryside experienced by people situated in the countryside. The analysis shows how space, time, contexts and intersections are entangled and queering the city/countryside divide.

Untersuchungen zur Epizootiologie der Bornaschen Krankheit bei Pferden und Schafen

Konrath, Andrea 31 May 2006 (has links) (PDF)

Dynamic, inter-subsidiary relationships of competition and collaboration

Chambers, Morgan January 2015 (has links)
Horizontal relationships between subsidiaries within an MNC are rarely shown on an organisation chart but the interactions along this dimension are critical to the achievement of an MNC’s global operations and strategic activities. Different interaction logics of social relationships and economic exchanges in horizontal relationships induce simultaneous competition and collaboration between the subsidiaries. Collaboration and competition is a business reality in inter-subsidiary relationships as they collaborate to share resources and knowledge, but ultimately compete for resources, customers and profits. While much research has focused on the effects of internal collaboration, and to a lesser extent internal competition, on organisational performance, little is known about the antecedents of competition and collaboration and the interplay of simultaneously occurring interactions. By focusing on one or the other, any understanding of the inherent tensions between the two is overlooked. This research explores the coopetitive nature of the inter-subsidiary relationship using a qualitative approach within three MNCs, where internal competition and collaboration are more salient. Data were gathered from 98 semi-structured interviews with top and senior management, top management focus groups and a body of secondary data including internal reports, policy documents and external publications, among others, has been referenced. The study makes three key contributions. First, by extending Luo’s (2005) theoretical model of intra-MNE coopetition, the study identifies additional respective antecedents of competition and collaboration. Second, the study locates inherent tensions arising from inter-subsidiary coopetition and explicates how the tensions are managed by the HQ and subsidiaries using spatial, balancing and assessing mechanisms and specific interventions. Third, the study offers an empirically-based model of inter-subsidiary coopetition with a more dynamic and temporal set of multiple relationships among the subsidiaries within the MNCs. Management implications include that senior management teams be aware of the opportunities and constraints of promoting a culture of collaboration while simultaneously fostering inter-subsidiary competition through internal accounting policies and incentive systems, and that the capability of senior managers to work effectively within dual organisational structures be developed and incorporated into executive development programmes.
