"Our Good and Faithful Servant": James Moore Wayne and Georgia Unionism

McMahon, Joel C. 23 April 2010 (has links)
Since the Civil War, historians have tried to understand why eleven southern states seceded from the Union to form a new nation, the Confederate States of America. What compelled the South to favor disunion over union? While enduring stereotypes perpetuated by the Myth of the Lost Cause cast most southerners of the antebellum era as ardent secessionists, not all southerners favored disunion. In addition, not all states were enthusiastic about the prospects of leaving one Union only to join another. Secession and disunion have helped shape the identity of the imagined South, but many Georgians opposed secession. This dissertation examines the life of U.S. Supreme Court Justice James Moore Wayne (1790-1867), a staunch Unionist from Savannah, Georgia. Wayne remained on the U.S. Supreme Court during the American Civil War, and this study explores why he remained loyal to the Union when his home state joined the Confederacy. Examining the nature of Wayne’s Unionism opens many avenues of inquiry into the nature of Georgia’s attitudes toward union and disunion in the antebellum era. By exploring the political, economic and social dimensions of Georgia Unionism and long opposition to secession, this work will add to the growing list of studies of southern Unionists.

Shirley Jackson's legacy : a critical commentary on the literary reception

Cohen, Gustavo Vargas January 2012 (has links)
Uma seleção de quatro contos compõe o corpus desta pesquisa, são eles ―The Intoxicated‖, ―The Daemon Lover‖, ―Like Mother Used to Make‖ e ―The Villager‖, todos publicados na seminal coleção The Lottery and Other Stories de 1948. / Shirley Jackson‘s alleged invisibility and status as a forgotten writer are investigated in this thesis. Thus, complaints of a shortage of critical assessment regarding her works were studied in order to determine how these detrimental labels actually reflect her recognition historically by specialized/academic critics, media and reading public. Instances of lively artistic and cultural activity stemming from her literature are offered as counterpoints that expose much of the incongruence that contaminates her literary historiography. The scope of this exploratory study spans a wide-ranging body of criticism about Jackson‘s works from the 1940s to the present. Among the aims of this thesis are the investigation of these disputable inconsistencies and the offering of insights into the potential factors that have caused them. Moreover, it tentatively proposes the critique that does not yet exist, that which places the very author at the center of the critical-source enterprise; in other words, one that uses Jackson‘s own fictional material as scientific-support and background against which to examine her fiction. A selection of four short stories compose the corpus of this research, namely ―The Intoxicated‖, ―The Daemon Lover‖, ―Like Mother Used to Make‖ and ―The Villager‖, all published in the cardinal 1948 short fiction collection The Lottery and Other Stories. Discussions of the restricted intertextual connections that binds the four stories are conducted so as to make conspicuous how pervasive and influential the essential common thematic elements spread all over her oeuvre can be, especially in what concerns the themes that form what is here called the Shirley Jackson Lore.

Balbino, Ivan Kelleros 31 August 2017 (has links)
According to the data released by Facebook in 2016, counting 99 million users only in Brazil, social networks have grown in size and importance in the mobilization of several themes, including electoral politics. Since 2008, with the presidential campaign of Barack Obama in the USA, social networks on the internet have gained space on the political scene and had been officially and legally incorporated in the Brazilian election process of 2010. Since then, such use, especially of Facebook, has gained the attention of political-party campaign managers. This case study investigates the use of Facebook in the election campaign for governor of Sergipe, in 2014, by the candidate Jackson Barreto and has as locus of research the timeline of the candidate's fan page. It is important to reflect on the potentialities of the use that Facebook provides and how it was used by the candidate here analyzed, identifying types of posts, interaction and used themes. The specific objectives: (i) identify the transformations, in the field of communication, those social networking sites wich provide for their users - candidates and voters - in electoral campaigns; (Ii) to categorize data and indicators of the Facebook fan page of the candidate elected to governor of the Province of Sergipe, during the electoral period of 2014, evidencing the use of the refered social networking site for broader and electoral communication purposes; (Iii) analyze the content of the candidate's posts and the interaction generated in his fan page, in order to qualify the use of the Facebook platform concerning to electoral communication. The methodological delineation of this qualitative-quantitative research relies on content analysis as a complementary procedure to the case study, carried out through the candidate's postings identified during the electoral period of 2014. It is known that Facebook offers a dynamic platform for a considerable variety of interactions and campaign actions of the candidate, often reaching a very large number of voters The results of the case studied point to: (i) the receiver's willingness to interact with the devices to enjoy, share and comment; (Ii) a small number of posts during the campaign period; and (iii) post content that made the Facebook candidate a non-digital campaign mirror.
