Sur les routes de l'exil syrien : récits de vie et parcours migratoires des réfugiés de Deir Mqaren / On the roads of exile : narratives and migratory journeys of the Syrian refugees from Deir Mqaren

Lagarde, David 03 July 2018 (has links)
In adopting a qualitative and multidisciplinary approach, based on the longitudinal study of the Deir Mqaren’s inhabitants’ circulations – a Syrian village located between Damascus and the Lebanese border – this thesis questions the “reticular” dimension of human mobility. Through refugees’ narratives and the analysis of their migration journeys to Jordan and Germany, its aims to understand the mechanics of refugee flows from Syria. Thus, this research invites the reader to move his focus towards networks of places and actors often considered as being marginal, despite the fact that they form the “backbone” of the roads of exile liking Syria to the rest of the world. By placing the focal point on individuals’ conditions of movement, the intention of this study is to both highlight the continuum existing between pre-conflict economic migration and the logic of the current refugee movements; and show in a tangible way the evolution of the relational mechanisms allowing exiles to access resources (such as information, mobility, housing, employment) despite the structural constraints they are constantly facing on their way towards safe destinations. The graphic representations developed in the framework of this thesis aim to better reflect the mobile, unstable and particularly labile nature of these socio-spatial dynamics.

Marsilio, Maguil 23 May 2014 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2014-11-20T16:08:01Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Maguil Marsilio.pdf: 2427930 bytes, checksum: 49456a5db3ae2004a465df748aaca182 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-11-20T16:08:02Z (GMT). Theses two populations coexisted under the tense atmosphere involving all kinds of stereotypes, dispersion policies and interest wars from local gazettes playing in defense of each involved group. Thus arises the following question: how was it possible for the two groups to work together, that is, in the same space of plantation, without serious conflicts? A probable response to this question is found on perception of existence of cultural negotiation spaces, built up by circumstance of “liminal stage”, into the “journeys”, in which people from different cultures can temporally seeing each other without social status.

Indo-Italian screens and the aesthetic of emotions

Acciari, Monia January 2011 (has links)
This thesis aims to shed light on the cultural and aesthetic implications of the relationship between Italy and India on and off the screens of Italy, following the expansion of Bollywood in Europe during the 90s. Bollywood's propagation abroad affected the identity of the South Asian diaspora, urban spaces and aesthetics which generated what Le Guellec - describing the arrival of Indians and Bollywood cinema to Paris - named as Bollywood/India mania. The study began with the exploration of the historical meaning of the term aesthetic in order to offer a contextualization on the sense of the aesthetic as a philosophy of art; furthermore, it established a background for further theoretical debate on South Asian diasporic identity formations within the entertainment industry of Italy. The research methods that predominated throughout this work were those of textual argumentation, aesthetic analysis, quantitative and qualitative questionnaires and interview data. The reasons for using different and interdisciplinary methods and approaches to offer an account on diasporic cultures, resided in the attempt to reveal the multiplicities of the "cultural and social" visible. The theoretical frame that this research intends to follow is through two quite distinct disciplines: aesthetic and cultural studies. The aim is to capitalise on the productive intersection of these two disciplines to analyse parts of the South Asian cultural text on the screen and beyond it as producers of transnational images imbued with melancholic memories and melancholically conceived spaces. This work will attempt to individuate the existence of representational patterns based on the aesthetic of melancholy with its nuances and metamorphoses, which represents, narrates and constructs South Asian and/or fused identities socially and culturally on the screens of Italy. The notion of semiosphere as elaborated by Jury Lotman, was utilised to define the cultural and dialogic dynamics of mainstream products that move constantly closer to each other generating original "formats" characterised by novel transnational and multiple identities. Throughout this thesis, the emphasis was placed on the "encounters", the "journeys" and the "sharing" of cultures, hence highlighting the possible conditions of belonging contemporaneously through multiple modalities: mentally, psychologically and experientially to multiplicities of cultures. In addition, the notion of "world culture" was contemplated in an attempt to practically support what Gilroy, in Black Atlantic, shaped as "inter-cultural" and translational formations.

Reproductive Journeys: Indo-Caribbean Women Challenging Gendered Norms

Rozario, Tannuja 10 April 2020 (has links)
Little is known about the factors that influence people from the Caribbean to seek reproductive health services in the United States. In this paper, I focus on Indo-Caribbean women from Guyana and Trinidad who undertake reproductive journeys to New York. I ask: (1) What influences Indo-Caribbean women to begin their reproductive journeys to Richmond Hill, New York? (2) How do Indo-Caribbean women challenge gender norms during their reproductive journeys? (3) How does women’s class inform their decision making in challenging gendered norms? After conducting 30 in-depth interviews with Indo-Caribbean women from Guyana and Trinidad who seek reproductive health services in New York, I find that Indo-Caribbean women’s reproductive journeys are influenced by sexism experienced within households, communities, and doctors’ offices, lack of proper care, legal restrictions, and unaffordable treatment. Another driver is support from women networks. Social networks helped women challenge gendered norms around motherhood that are present within communities in home countries. As women receive support from their networks, they challenge gender norms varied by their class. Women from middle-income households are more likely to challenge gender norms outwardly. Obtaining reproductive health care abroad becomes a journey with multidimensional experiences of gendered negotiations and constraints.

Uma Jornada Geográfica Litorânea como proposta metodológica para ensinar e aprender Geografia na escola: uma experiência em São José de Ribamar/MA / A Geographic Seaside Journey as a methodology to teach and learn Geography at school: an experience in São José de Ribamar/MA

Fonsêca, Alexandre Vitor de Lima 09 October 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents a methodology of work to learn and to teach Geography at school. It is a teaching proposal from a field study whose principles are: the reflection of a plural construction of class field from multiple perspectives with emphasis on students and teachers. The main objective is to propose a method of research with emphasis on the valorization of classical traditional geographical knowledge of the seaside city of São José de Ribamar/ MA, from a study of the environment with students from public municipal school in order to identify whether that knowledge is used by Geography teachers. From field class, students and teachers experienced how that knowledge can be systematized in a curriculum that enables students to relate the contents with the everyday reality of their parents. Two experiments entitled \"Geographic Seaside Journeys were conducted with 6th grade students to evaluate the effects of the tasks performed in the field and how they contribute to the learning of geographic contents related to the everyday life of São José de Ribamars community. The first served as a laboratory for the evaluation of the methodology, the second as a parameter for analysis of the effects of the tasks performed. Four types of analysis were done: mapping the track with introductions of notions of school cartography, analysis of reports, interpretation of photographed scenes and evaluation through seminaries of factors presented in the followed settings. The experience of the journeys undertaken by students and teachers shows us that planning field classes during the academic school year, can contribute decisively to the citizenship of the student, approaching the theoretical knowledge to the practical knowledge of the community.
