Assessment of current Hatch-out Program curriculum implemented in K-12 for Mississippi

Beasley, Marissa Kaytlyn 13 May 2022 (has links)
Currently, most Americans are 2 to 4 generations removed from the farm, as only 2% are involved with agriculture. Thus, verifying the importance of agriculture education implementation to promote the agriculture industry. MSU has a novel Hatch-out Program in attempt to bridge the gap in agriculture awareness. Research for this thesis first evaluates previous participants of the Hatch-out Program to assess satisfaction to determine if modifications are needed. This thesis will conclude with the implementation and validation of the modified curriculum, lesson plans, as well as activities and materials into the classroom. A post-implementation survey was also given to the teachers to evaluate ease of implementation as well as age-appropriateness. Results revealed an increase of knowledge across all grades in respect to the pre- and post-test. Survey results revealed an ease of implementation as well as age-appropriateness from teacher surveys.

RACE, PLACE, AND POLICY FORMATION: PUBLIC EDUCATION AND SCHOOL CHOICE DISCOURSE IN THE WASHINGTON POST, 2007-2012

Sloane, Kelly January 2019 (has links)
As the first city with a majority African American population and a school system that has long served majority low-income African American children, DC offers a compelling case study about public education and school choice in an increasingly affluent city. Using The Washington Post archive, this dissertation considers how discourse about one of the most vital public goods evolved between 2007 and 2012, a period of rapid economic, political, and social change in the city. DC is a civically engaged and diverse city and, The Washington Post has one of the most diverse newsrooms in the country. Post leadership and most writers and contributors were critical of policy and rulings that might cause greater racial segregation in American public schools. Yet, there was no discourse in this archive to suggest that encouraging greater racial or economic integration would be a successful campaign. Instead, The Post advocated for school reform and choice for the neediest students while seemingly absolving families with means who chose to opt out of the public school system. Failing to interrogate the school choices made by middle-class families represents a silence in the archive and illustrates how silence can be productive because it contributes toward the maintenance of a segregated public school system. / Geography

Digital Game-Based Learning in K-12 Classrooms: Studying Effectiveness and Influential Factors in Instruction

Nino, Miguel Alfonso 02 May 2019 (has links)
The adoption of new technologies in K-12 classrooms usually generates claims about their effectiveness, but in many cases, these claims are not carefully studied. Furthermore, conclusions drawn from effectiveness studies generally focus on technologies as the sole responsible factor for such effectiveness, without considering other factors and conditions. Through an integrative review, this study evaluated and critiqued the current status of K-12 digital game-based learning (DGBL) to determine the implications and limitations of these effectiveness claims, as well as problems when conducting this type of research. In addition, this study explored factors and conditions, beyond the digital game, that could have had an impact on effectiveness. Findings from this study can provide teachers and researchers a guide to effectively implement and research DGBL in K-12 classrooms, as well as conceptual classifications of factors and conditions that could play an important role when adopting digital games in instruction. / Doctor of Philosophy / It is common that when new technologies are used in instruction, claims in favor of such technologies are made. However, in many instances, there is not enough or sound evidence to support these effectiveness claims. For this reason, this study has been conducted with the goal of evaluating and critiquing what has been empirically studied so far in K-12 digital game-based learning (DGBL) to determine the extent of these effectiveness claims. In addition, this study has identified research problems and flaws that have been found in empirical studies and how they can be avoided. Furthermore, this study paid close attention to factors and conditions, besides the actual digital game, to determine if they played a role on effectiveness. Finally, a research agenda has been included in this study to fills existing gaps in K-12 DGBL and to guide researchers and teachers when conducting research and adopting digital games in the classroom.

Facilitating Academic Achievement in High School Interactive Television Programs by Promoting Self-Regulated Learning

Kobayashi, Michiko 28 April 2006 (has links)
The study investigated the effects of self-monitoring on students' academic achievement and self-regulation in an interactive television (ITV) classroom. High school students taking the Japanese courses via ITV were asked to engage in self-monitoring activities, including goal setting, self-recording, and self-evaluation for 6 weeks using online databases. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-tests. and two groups: control and experimental groups, were formed to examine the effects of self-monitoring. Students' test grades and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaires were used to measure academic achievement and self-regulation. Hierarchical regressions were conducted to analyze the data. While no significant difference was found between two groups, the study provided directions for future research. / Ph. D.

白民凱, Blanc, Nicolas Unknown Date (has links)
This paper will provide an overview of K-12 education in Taiwan, and the opportunities and challenges. It can be an handbook for investors and the government. The first part will focus on history of education, curriculum, government education policies, education spending and the Taiwanese education ranking at the global level. The following part, a study of private education sector, will give an understanding of law and regulation as well as the current actors of the private education at K-12 level. A comparison will be made with the education systems in Singapore and China, as they share many cultural roots and this comparison inform future government policies. In order to understand the possible future for Taiwanese education, we need to comprehend the country’s current economic, social and political development and make the link to educational issues. In this part we will particularly draw attention to the New South Bound Policy, the demographic issue and immigration policies. The last part of this paper will provide a business analysis of the education sector, using Porter’s model, SWOT and build a comparison with other South-East Asian countries regarding international school at K-12 level. The final recommendation will show to investors that Taiwan is a favourable place for private investment in the education sector due to its current government but should not be country of choice in Asia as China and Indonesia offer more opportunities in term of market growth.
