Efficient Implementation of 3D Finite Difference Schemes on Recent Processor Architectures / Effektiv implementering av finita differensmetoder i 3D på senaste processorarkitekturerCeder, Frederick January 2015 (has links)
Efficient Implementation of 3D Finite Difference Schemes on Recent Processors Abstract In this paper a solver is introduced that solves a problem set modelled by the Burgers equation using the finite difference method: forward in time and central in space. The solver is parallelized and optimized for Intel Xeon Phi 7120P as well as Intel Xeon E5-2699v3 processors to investigate differences in terms of performance between the two architectures. Optimized data access and layout have been implemented to ensure good cache utilization. Loop tiling strategies are used to adjust data access with respect to the L2 cache size. Compiler hints describing aligned memory access are used to support vectorization on both processors. Additionally, prefetching strategies and streaming stores have been evaluated for the Intel Xeon Phi. Parallelization was done using OpenMP and MPI. The parallelisation for native execution on Xeon Phi is based on OpenMP and yielded a raw performance of nearly 100 GFLOP/s, reaching a speedup of almost 50 at a 83\% parallel efficiency. An OpenMP implementation on the E5-2699v3 (Haswell) processors produced up to 292 GFLOP/s, reaching a speedup of almost 31 at a 85\% parallel efficiency. For comparison a mixed implementation using interleaved communications with computations reached 267 GFLOP/s at a speedup of 28 with a 87\% parallel efficiency. Running a pure MPI implementation on the PDC's Beskow supercomputer with 16 nodes yielded a total performance of 1450 GFLOP/s and for a larger problem set it yielded a total of 2325 GFLOP/s, reaching a speedup and parallel efficiency at resp. 170 and 33,3\% and 290 and 56\%. An analysis based on the roofline performance model shows that the computations were memory bound to the L2 cache bandwidth, suggesting good L2 cache utilization for both the Haswell and the Xeon Phi's architectures. Xeon Phi performance can probably be improved by also using MPI. Keeping technological progress for computational cores in the Haswell processor in mind for the comparison, both processors perform well. Improving the stencil computations to a more compiler friendly form might improve performance more, as the compiler can possibly optimize more for the target platform. The experiments on the Cray system Beskow showed an increased efficiency from 33,3\% to 56\% for the larger problem, illustrating good weak scaling. This suggests that problem sizes should increase accordingly for larger number of nodes in order to achieve high efficiency.

The Council of Troyes, wich opened on January 13, 1129, confirms an initiative born in the East nine years earlier. Knights had then expressed the will to live in a religious way, by making the triple monastic vow of poverty, chastity and obedience, while continuing to practice the profession of arms in order to protect pilgrims on the roads of the Holy Land. Recognized by the papacy in Troyes and endowed with a rule, the « Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon » became the first military order in history. The Order of the Hospital, which already existed in Jerusalem and whose missions was to care for the poor sick, gradually became militarized in the middle of the 12th century, drawing inspiration from the example of the Temple. Templars and Hospitallers subsequently inspired all other military orders. A historiographical tradition of the Crusades has long maintained the idea of two enemy orders whose conflicts caused the loss of the Latin States of the East. The study of two centuries of common coexistence between Templars and Hospitallers in the Holy Land allows us to bury this image and see how much these military orders influenced each other. It aslo helps to restore the truth about the relationship between the brothers of the two orders. At the frontiers of comparative history, this study follows the chronological framework of the masters of the Temple and the Hospital, making it possible to highlight the importance of the decisions of these men. Thematic studies on the organization of these two orders, their structures, their rules, the images that they transmit and their role in some great events of the Latin States of the East make it possible to understand the links wich united them, as well as the how they influenced each other. We have too often noted their political rivalry, in a kingdom of Jerusalem where the absence of a strong royal power quickly gave them complete freedom. In the same way, we have too often forgotten the price that Templars and Hospitallers paid together on the battlefields of the Holy Land, behaving like what they were : brothers in arms.

Significance of the Rosslyn pillars and pillars known to have been incorporated in ANE templesParker-Wood, Marlene Margaret 30 November 2007 (has links)
From Ancient Near Eastern texts, the Bible and archaeological artefacts, we are able to glimpse an over arching belief in a feminine deity. During the occupation of the Temple Mount by the Knights Templars, earlier traditions were ”re-discovered” and accepted as a de facto tradition.
William St Clair at the threshold of the Renaissance, mindful of the danger of heresy, was intellectually able to bring together many traditions into a broad Biblically-based theology that recognised the early Israelite traditions as the foundation of Christian belief. All this is evident in Rosslyn Chapel. / OLD TESTAMENT & ANCIENT NE / MA (BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY)

BEATA MARIA/DEA VULTS! Ahlsén, Nils January 2019 (has links)
Beata Maria/Dea Vults is a thesis for the degree of master (one year) in theology. The thesis explores the role of the Virgin Mary as a martial saint in catholic combat with Islam and muslims between the years 1119 AD to 1648 AD with a focus on symbolism. The paper is focusing on symbolism in war banners, patron saints and semiotic symbols on arms and armour. There are three different events or phenomenons in the study, separated in time as well as space. Firstly the war banner used at the battle of Las Navas (1212 AD) during the reconquista of Spain. The banner of Mary with child is the prime subjekt as well as the myths appearing in the aftermath of the battle, and the ceremony that was devised from it. The second phenomenon is the knights templars use of Mary as patron saint, and the ceremony that followed this relationship. There is also discussion of the belts worn that were related to Mary, the use of wich is attested in documents from the trials of the templars between 1307 and 1312 AD. Lastly the paper focuses on the armours of the polish winged husars of 1648 AD and the seige of Vienna. The thesis explores the relationship between the symbols of the armour of the husars and the religious views of King John III Sobieski of Poland. The main question of the study is: What were the meaning of the symbols of Mary as she was carried as a ritualistic symbol for war? The subsequent questions are: How do you trace a progression in the useage of Mary as a symbol from the templars all the way to the use of Mary as a symbol for the winged husars? Which types of worship of Mary as a symbol were used primarliy in wars with muslims? The paper is researched by qualitative methods including text analysis as well as semiotic symbolism reading. There are two theories used in the analysis. Smarts dimensions and Andersons and Hulls Warrior elites, with Smarts dimensions as the dominant theory.

Conduire Amour: Liebe Der Frau Als Schlüssel Zum Heil Und Brüderlichen Frieden in Wolfram Von Eschenbachs ParzivalHall, Eleanor Kinser 17 July 2009 (has links)
This paper examines Wolfram von Eschenbach’s juxtaposition of contrary things in Parzival as the beginning of the road to spiritual salvation for Parzival. Men’s quest for fame and honor in the material, Arthurian world is compared to the divine Grail kingdom and the godlike women who shed compassionate, Christ-like tears. Wolfram’s message of peace and love for brother is examined through his use of symbolism, particularly through womens’ tears and turtledove imagery. Parzival, Gâwân and Feirefiz are compared in order to show that the love and quest for personal honor in the Arthurian world is a necessary step on the path to God’s divine love and salvation. Compassion and love for one’s neighbor must be learned before Parzival attains his destiny. How marriage teaches Parzival triuwe and how he demonstrates this characteristic are examined. Romantic love, emulation of women and divine love lead Parzival to his destiny.
